24-year-old Sophia M Joe was born with hearing and speech disabilities. Neither of these could, however, stop her from reaching the heights of success. Sophia is today a celebrated model and an athlete. A three-time national champion at shot put and discus throw, she has represented India at numerous international events. She is also a talented painter and jewellery designer.Childhood was not easy for the Kochi girl. Schools wouldn’t admit her. Her brother, Richard also suffers from the same condition. “It’s neither my children’s fault nor mine. They were born this way and nothing could help their state. But people made fun of us, taunted us as if we’d committed some sin,” Sophia’s father Joe Francis told Ken Folios.

Today, Sophia has a BA degree in English Literature from St Xavier’s College and is a celebrated model and sportsperson. Her mother Goriatty told India Today, “She has grown up like any other ordinary student. Though we home-schooled her for some years, later we admitted her to an ordinary school in Kerala and trained her ourselves. We are always with her in fulfilling her ambitions and this infused much confidence in her.”

Sophia was the first runner-up in Miss India Deaf and Dumb contest in 2014 and represented India at the Miss World Deaf and Dumb Contest in Prague, Czech Republic. She has also acted in a film titled Best Wishes and is training in dance. Sophia also became the first woman from Kerala with a hearing disability to receive a driving licence, for which she went on to knock on the doors of the Delhi High Court. The talented soul aspires to become a car racer in the times to come.

AIR Kalaburgi celebrates its Golden Jubilee

In the historical Kalaburagi city in the north eastern part of Karnataka, the Akashavani Kendra, has crossed a major milestone by successfully completing the most eventful 50 years. Started on 11 November 1966, the erstwhile Gulbarga AIR station was dedicated to the nation by the then Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajbahadur in the presence of the then Karnataka PWD Minister Veerendra Patil who subsequently became the chief minister of the state.

It would be very difficult to measure the impact created by the powerful audio medium by any yardstick but one can safely say, from the day one the Akashvani has become an integral part of the common man in one of the admittedly most backward and deprived regions of India. One has yet come across a competitor to the AIR in preserving, promoting, and propagating the rich cultural heritage of the Hyderabad Karnataka region. In the last 50 years the station has created a treasure trove of archival material of art, music, folklore, culture, history, heritage, and what not. It was very befitting indeed, on the great occasion, a compact disc of vachanas rendered by the celebrated Hindustani vocalist of the region Pandit Siddaram Jambaldinni and selected from the Kalaburagi AIR archive was released.Inaugurating the celebrations at a glittering function at the S.M.Pandit Rangamandir on Monday 11th December 2016, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mr.Venkaiah Naidu lauded the role played by the Kalaburagi AIR in empowering the people of the region through a series of useful programmes. Some of the propgrammes creating lasting impact and becoming worthy emulation by others include providing a powerful platform for the effective implementation of MGNREGA, ` Yashaswi SSLC’ for improving the results of SSLC examinations, promoting Swachch Bharat Abhiyan through the high impact making jingles, Megha Sandesha, a unique weather forecast programme by combining scientific method and the time tested traditional almanac prediction, etc.

``In the times of undesirable trend of sensationalism, news corrupted with views, it is only the AIR which has maintained purity, integrity and credibility’’ Mr.Naidu said. Responding to the complaints of radio viewership drastically coming down, the minister was optimistic that the days will not be too far when people will fall back to radio for news and entertainment. He also promised to overcome the shortage of radio sets in the market in six months.MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Bhagawanth Khuba and Basawaraj Patil Sedam underlined the need for radio expanding its horizons and continue to maintain sanctity in the days of private channels increasingly becoming commercial and abhorring the real public cause. Sri Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble minister for I&B released the souvenir `Kallarali Hovagi’ (Blossomming of a Stone). The inaugural attraction was a group dance on Swachch Bharat Theme by Omkar Nrutya Sadhana of Kalaburagi. The inauguration was followed by a number of cultural events.

Sonam Wangchuk is a 50-year-old engineer from Leh but locally he is better known as the guy who inspired Aamir Khan’s famous character ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ in the 2009 blockbuster, 3 Idiots.

Sonam, along with four other innovators from across the world, has received the Rolex Award for Enterprise 2016. The award was presented to Sonam in Los Angeles on Tuesday, reports NDTV.

He has received the award for building ‘ice stupas’ that act as artificial glaciers and have significantly reduced the problem of water shortage in the arid region of Ladakh.
The people of Ladakh primarily depend on farming, but have been struggling hard to fight climate change over the past few decades. To battle the situation, Sonam has built ice stupas that store winter water in the form of 40-metre-high mountains made of ice. These act as glaciers during winter and provide enough water to irrigate 10 hectares of land.
Sonam's project started two years ago. Today the desert landscape has turned green, and the level of groundwater in the area has risen significantly too. Sonam told The Indian Express, "I’m not doing anything revolutionary. It is ninth-standard science put to use. We mountain people have to find new ways to work with nature, not against it."

Inspiration:How Students of IISER Kolkata Are Using College Classrooms to Teach Underprivileged Kids near Campus

“Education is the key to bring transparency and accountability in the society. It is our collective responsibility to get our children educated. The vision I have is to see every single child to be in school, in a playground.” – Kailash Satyarthi. With education comes the ability to lead a dignified life and the power to contribute towards nation-building. But India still has 58 million out-of-school children, and millions don’t have access to quality education. As educated individuals, it is our responsibility to create pathways for them to join mainstream schools for all-round development. It is with this thought and vision that the students of Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Kolkata, have been working in Nadia district of West Bengal.

In January 2015, seven undergraduate students of IISER started working on a project with the aim of providing quality education to underprivileged children living in and around their college campus and in the nearby villages. Today, the project has turned into an on-going effort called Ek Pahal, under which college students teach children on a regular basis. The students conduct classes using modern tools and infrastructure available at IISER.

Started by Shubham Chaudhry, Prithvi Raj, Preethi Thomas, Abhinash Kumar, Sai Madhav, Rohit Bhagawat, and Jayshree Deheria, Ek Pahal is a team of over 100 volunteers now. The seeds of this idea were sown about two years back when the founders decided to celebrate Diwali with people living near the IISER campus. They distributed sweets and lit candles in the neighborhood and it was here that they came across numerous children. A brief survey of the area revealed that most of these children were not going to schools because they could not afford to pay the fees, or because they couldn’t understand what was being taught. That is how the initiative was born, with the idea of providing free, concept-based education to these students.

Public broadcaster Doordarshan has shortlisted three production houses, namely Saai Baba Telefilms, BAG Films & Media and Balaji Telefilms, as qualified bidders for its slot auction scheme. The three production houses made the cut after their qualification bids were validated as per the norms set by the pubcaster. Sol Productions was disqualified after its financial bid was received in an open condition at the time of submission, violating clauses 10 (a) and 10 (c) of the request for proposal (RFP). The financial bids of the three qualified bidders will be opened on 13 December at 3 pm at Doordarshan Bhawan. DD had twice floated RFPs for auction of slots on DD India. In the first attempt, seven production houses had shown interest; however, all of them were found ineligible, prompting DD to cancel the process. In the second attempt, the pubcaster had received three bids despite relaxing several conditions. However, even those bids were found to be ineligible. The two initial setbacks notwithstanding, DD decided to try its luck for the third time. The pubcaster had issued a fresh RFP document on 3 November seeking bids from production houses. The last date for submission was 25 November. The final list of qualified bidders was published on 9 December.

The financial bids will be opened on 13 December while the letter of award will be issued on 20 December. The agreement signing and performance bank guarantee (PBG) submission has to be done on 7 February. Successful production houses will need to launch their programmes in February itself. The earnest money deposit (EMD) for each weekday slot is Rs 3 lakh while the same for each weekend slot is Rs 6 lakh. Bidders were allowed to bid for more than one slot. On weekdays, three Monday–Friday, 7.30–9 pm slots are up for grabs while ther are four slots available from Monday to Thursday, 9–11 pm. Each weekday slot is of half an hour duration.
