50 years of reaching the unreachable

As he leaves to his agricultural field from his modest house in Thookanaickenpalayam village, about 20km from Coimbatore, every day at dawn, T N Ramasamy, a farmer, carefully picks the radio set from the shelf. He reaches the farm, just in time to tune All India Radio's Coimbatore station for the daily farm news bulletin at 6.35am. On request, Ramasamy increases the volume, as a group of farm workers too join him to listen the announcements. "This has been my routine for the past 50 years,'' says Ramasamy, now 78. It has been 50 years since AIR Coimbatore launched its broadcast on December 18, 1966, from its Chettipalayam transmission station. Still, for many like Ramasamy, the day is incomplete without listening to its programmes in this age of zillion television channels and omnipresent social media. Old timers say it was nothing less than euphoria when the first broadcast was made. People scurried to get hold of new radio sets to listen the programmes aired from their city. There were people who tuned in much before the official broadcast was to be made and were waiting to listen to the audio. AIR Coimbatore turned out to be an instant hit right from the moment the first announcement was made.

"That very evening, none other than innovator and entrepreneur G D Naidu walked in to our station appreciating us," recalled V Nallathambi, who made the first announcement. Since then, the Coimbatore station had a long and chequered journey, reached several milestones, winning hearts all along. "People still reminisces our programmes like Pudhayal, Naaloru Thagaval, Naaloru Keerai and Carnatic musical performances. We were part of several people's growing up years, informing, educating and entertaining them," says Chitralega, current programme head at AIR, Coimbatore. Chitralega who joined in 1988 says her interviews of field marshal Sam Manekshaw, chief of the Army staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and V R Lakshmi Narayanan, former director general of police who arrested Indira Gandhi had wider reach beyond Coimbatore. Under G Selvam, the station director in 1979, AIR reached its peak with the highest number of listeners and was the most sought after medium. Bringing in several innovative and interesting programmes, he was the first to record musical programmes at the Coimbatore station.

"I realized there was a lot of local talent. We were only broadcasting programmes recorded in Trichy. The first music programme we recorded was by Gururajan from Erode who was a mridangam artist. Slowly, we brought in a lot of musicians and vocalists and started regular programmes," he says. "Mill workers, labourers, farmers, handloom weavers of Coimbatore found their voice in us. We did special programmes for them," says J Bagyalakshmi, an announcer. Bhagyalakshmi, who has interviewed several musicians since 1986, said AIR still stays relevant, despite media explosion. "In radio plays, it is challenging to convey the nature and emotions of various characters through voice alone. But our listeners laughed and cried listening to our plays. That was our success," says Bhagyalakshmi.

Television had its own charm, but Tamil programmes were far and few in Doordarshan of that era. So AIR had its base of loyal listeners intact for decades. "Even now, when it comes to news, we rely on AIR for authentic information," says Ramasamy. The current crop of employees said while they want to compete with other media, they had their own restrictions. "We try to change and it cannot happen overnight. But our motto will always remain to inform first, educate and finally also entertain," she says.

AIR Kohima was the first radio station to broadcast Christmas messages and dramas in the country, a former official informed today. The programmes were first broadcasted in English and gradually in the dialect bulletins and got feedbacks from places as far as Finland, the official added. The former Station Director and retired Deputy Director General of AIR and DDK, Northeast, V Sekhose disclosed this while addressing the advent Christmas celebration of All India Radio (AIR) Kohima at its studio complex on December 8. She also reminded the Staff of AIR Kohima that the greatest objective of the establishment is to give public quality service broadcast. Maintaining that AIR and DDK are the most popular media among the electronic media owing to its credibility and authenticity, the former Station Director said that the two broadcasters were among the first media institutions in the region to provide information to the people, which they relied on even today.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has popularized radio more through the Mann Ki Baat programme, in which the Prime Minister reached out to the people, she added. She also called on the employees of AIR to continue to work with dedication, truth and sincerity for the service of the people. Meanwhile, sharing about the real meaning of Christmas with the gathering, Sekhose said that Christmas is not just a mere festival like any others, but a festival of love and peace. The celebration with rites and rituals without Christ are all empty, she maintained calling upon everyone to put back “Christ first in the Christmas.” Also speaking on the occasion, Director Engineer, K.K Rangma said the current year has been a busy and challenging one, with repeat transformation of the entire establishment to a digital platform. Other highlights of the programme included various Christmas song presentation by the different sections of the Station, stated a press note from AIR.

Inspiration-here’s Krishna Vikas, who’s trying to bring humanity back into this world.

In the age we live in today, simple values like sharing and caring are becoming nearly obsolete. If we were to think of the last time we bought something new or indulged in an extravagant meal, it could probably have been in the past one week. While these things don’t seem like a big deal, there are millions in our country for whom such opportunities would mean a world of happiness. And sometimes happiness is making another person happy. In a society where materialism has taken centre stage and human values are given little importance.
Krishna, a 22-year-old from Hyderabad, could be just another guy. Krishna is working as a personal fitness trainer. What makes him unique is his belief in the joy of sharing and finding happiness in others’ happiness.

Krishna came up with an initiative called ‘Stop Taking Start Giving’ that carries out activities aimed at spreading joy and happiness in the lives of the not-so-privileged on a regular basis. The motive behind ‘Stop Taking Start Giving’ is to make people realise the importance of social and human values and along the way, impact the lives of the less privileged in as many ways as possible. With the mission to spread and find joy in the simplest of things, Krishna carries out various activities to make the underprivileged and the marginalised feel as much a part of society as the rest of us. Krishna has so far conducted around 20 activities like giving out food to the homeless, giving out gifts to the under-privileged during festivals, and giving out stationery to students from government schools, impacting around 500 people just in his neighbourhood. He not only tries to touch the lives of the underprivileged but also attempts to interact with them. One such instance is when he decided to take two young girls, whose mothers work as maids, to have a day of fun. He took these two girls out shopping and treated them to a nice meal at a restaurant. To put it in his own words, Krishna says,

“Many of us don’t really think twice before spending any money on clothes or things that we don’t really need. We often take many things in life for granted but there are millions of people out there who have to think 10 times before spending a penny, and when someone buys them the things that they long for, it makes a world of difference to them. This is the motive behind my initiative — the joy of giving is found in the simplest of things. This is the message that I want to spread.”

After experiencing an injury, he was overwhelmed by the love and care he received from his family. At this point, he was struck by the realisation that people who are homeless and underprivileged often do not experience this kind of affection and acceptance from the society. At the same time, when he was pondering on these issues, Krishna joined the gym and started interacting with the cleaner and was appalled by his tragic story of how he had ended up where he was. Moved by his story and left with a feeling of wanting to do something for him, Krishna decided to make his day by taking him out.

This experience led to the creation of Stop Taking Start Giving in the December of 2013. He began to understand that true happiness lies in spreading and sharing your fortune with others.

I&B ministry to give 90% subsidy for starting community radio stations in Northeastern states

Aiming to give a boost to the community radio sector, the government today announced that 90 per cent subsidy will be provided for starting such stations in the northeastern states and 75 per cent in other states. Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu made this announcement at a conference of state ministers, organised by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry after a gap of around seven years. As per the present rules, I&B ministry gives a subsidy of 50 per cent up to a limit of Rs 7.5 lakh, for starting community radio stations. In his concluding remarks, Naidu also announced that a new dedicated Doordarshan channel for the northeastern states will come up in the first half of January. This channel will show the richness, variety and diversity of the local culture and seamlessly integrate these states with the rest of the country, he said.

Minister of State for I&B Rajyavardhan Rathore said collaboration between states and Centre is the “bedrock for good governance” and there is a need to “move forward together as Team India” in scripting the development of the nation. Later, speaking to mediapersons at the sidelines of the event, to a question about reports that the Uttar Pradesh government wants to start a news channel, Naidu said, “There has been no direct communication. Why are they communicating through you (media)?” I have not received any such information. If it comes, I have an open mind, but we will see it in light of the policies that are there,” he said. The present Act only allows Doordarshan and All India Radio. States do not have their own channels, he said. According to an official release by the Jharkhand government, Venkaiah Naidu said, “It gave him pleasure to see Jharkhand progressing fast under the leadership of Chief Minister Raghubar Das.” Even developed states are following Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in several matters, he observed during a conference of state information ministers and top officials in New Delhi. The Union Information and Broadcasting minister also announced that those states which promote cinema will get Rs one crore as reward after assessment, the release said.

Govt launches DigiShala channel to promote digital payments

Free Doordarshan DTH channel , with a potential viewership of more than two crore,
will be available initially in English and Hindi and, subsequently,  in regional languages.
Law and information technology (IT) minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday launched DigiShala, a free Doordarshan DTH channel to educate and inform the people about the various modes of digital payments. The channel will help people understand the use of unified payments interface (UPI), USSD, aadhaar-enabled payments system, electronic wallets, debit and credit cards. The minister also launched a website (www.cashlessindia.gov.in) which will serve as a repository of knowledge regarding digital payments. Both the channel and website were launched as a part of the ‘Digi Dhan Abhiyan’, a campaign conceptualized by the IT ministry to enable every citizen, small trader and merchant to adopt digital payments in their every day financial transactions. “All modes of digital payments are showing enormous rise at an average growth of 400-1000% since the last one month. These figures are without any formal digital education. With DigiShala being introduced we can only imagine the growth figures in the coming days,” said Prasad during the event.

DigiShala will be available through GSAT15 (DD Direct DTH), 93.5 degree East, Receive frequency: 11590 Mhz, the government said. The channel, with a potential viewership of more than two crore across the country, will be available initially in English and Hindi and subsequently in regional languages. “DigiShala will enable and empower every citizen of the country, especially farmers, students, Dalits and women in rural areas to learn the usefulness and benefits of digital payment in our everyday life to adopt the same on a mass scale,” Prasad said. The idea is to educate the people through talk shows and panel discussions on the adoption of digital modes of payments, he added. The website has been designed to provide all official information at one source regarding digital payment methods and different schemes undertaken by the government. It also targets educating people about safeguarding their accounts from cyber crimes and phishing. On Thursday finance minister Arun Jaitley announced that two point-of-sale machines will be provided to villages with a population of up to 10,000 and 100,000 villages will be selected for this purpose. The provision of digital literacy to semi-urban and rural sector of the economy has become the major focus area for the government since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the recall of Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes on 8 November.

“The government has adopted a comprehensive education approach to make people understand the importance and ease of digital payments. Most of the people residing in the villages do not know that their debit cards can be used for purposes other than as an ATM card. Here comes the necessity of awareness and education, and making these people able to enjoy the benefits of digital literacy,”said Sanjay Swamy, managing partner, Prime Venture Partners.
