Nostalgic Memories of serving at AIR - Mallika Banerjee

Namaskar! I joined as a Pex directly recruited through UPSC in 1988. Prior to this I was a regular visitor to AIR Delhi since my childhood and I never dreamt of a job in AIR. I remember as a child I accompanied my mother for her broadcasts in All India Radio. She won first prize in AIR music competition and started broadcasting since 1962. I vividly remember a day when I accompanied her I was mesmerised by the patterns on the floor of the gallery in front of room number 37. I was playfully stepping one foot on each square and followed my mother to a room which is now the museum in the Broadcasting House. At that time it was the duty room. I saw one auntie entered the room with lots of spools in her hand and accidentally one spool slipped and fell from her hand due to which the tape ran out of the spool . This amazed me a lot. Who knew at that time that I will become a part of this amazing world one day!

This 60-YO Peon Celebrated her Retirement Day in the Presence of her IAS, Doctor & Engineer Sons

The day of one’s retirement is always a memorable one. But the farewell ceremony for 60-year-old Sumitra Devi, who worked as a peon at Central Coalfields Limited Township in Rajrappa, Jharkhand, was, by all means, a very special one!In attendance at Sumitra’s farewell, along with her co-workers and the residents of the township, were her three successful children – one a District Collector, another a doctor, and the third a railway engineer. It was a proud moment for the mother who had raised her young sons through many adversities and difficulties in life. Virendra Kumar is a railway engineer, Dhirendra Kumar a doctor, and Mahendra Kumar the District Collector of Siwan in Bihar.

Even after her sons were settled and willing to take care of her, Sumitra Devi continued her Group Four job at CCL. The independent woman, who had started off by cleaning the streets of CCL township 30 years ago, wanted to make it on her own till the very end and retire as a proud woman.

According to a report by Financial Express, Sumitra’s sons talked fondly of their mother on the occasion and shared with those present the memories of how she had raised them devotedly, making constant sacrifices. Mahendra Kumar said, “No job is difficult in life. Everything becomes possible with honest hard work. My mother and we have seen tough times in our lives, yet she never let us feel broken or disheartened. I am proud that we all lived up to her hard work and expectations.”

On hearing their words of affection and gratitude, Sumitra Devi could no longer hold back her tears of joy. As quoted in another report by India Times, the proud mother introduced her sons to her superiors, saying “Sahib, for 30 years I cleaned the streets of this colony but my children are Sahibs like you.”

Inspiration:This UP Girl’s Hard Work and Dedication Catapulted Her From Being a Newspaper Vendor to an IIT Graduate

Anand Kumar’s highly successful initiative Super 30 coaches children from disadvantaged backgrounds for the IIT-JEE examination. Many inspiring stories of hardworking children, fighting against both social and financial obstacles to secure engineering seats in some of the country’s most prestigious educational institutions, have emerged from this programme. One such story of a girl named Shivangi, who went from selling newspapers in Kanpur to studying in IIT Roorkee, was shared by Anand Kumar on his Facebook page. As a child, Shivangi went to a government school and would study whenever she got free time at her father’s newspaper store.

“This is one story in two photos. These photos are a mirror as well as tears. They have a story from the past and the present. This is music and melody. It is the silence of the past and courage of the present. These are the photos of my student Shivangi. The first photograph is of the time when Shivangi came to study in Super 30 with her father, and the other is of Shivangi today. While she was in school she sold magazines and newspapers on the roadside shop to help her father, handling the store completely alone when he went home to bring lunch. But whenever she would get time, she would study.

Shivangi hails from a small place called Deha which is around 60 kms away from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her secondary education from a government school there. One day she read about Super 30 and came to me.While at Super 30, she became a part of my family. She would address my mother as ‘dadi’ and we felt she is our daughter. Whenever my mother’s health was impaired, she would help and sleep next to her. IIT results were announced and she was preparing to go to IIT Roorkee. She had tears in her eyes and all the women in my family were also crying. It felt as if we were giving away our daughter to someone else. As she was leaving, her father said that people have dreams and sometimes these dreams become reality but he never had such a big dream.Even today, Shivangi keeps in touch with our family. As soon as we got to know that she has got a job, my whole family was immensely happy. My mother was the happiest and all she said with tears in her eyes is that she hopes to be blessed with daughters in her next life too.”

During a seven-day camp organised at Aluva, Kerala, a bunch of 27 zealous students from St. Xavier’s college came up with a plan to clean Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. The students, who are enrolled under the National Service Scheme, arrived at the bus stop closest to their college, guided by two teachers. Resmi Varghese, who was heading the clean-up, said that the students had earlier been involved in cleaning up railway stations and public spaces. She told The Times of India, “The motive behind this was to send a strong message to the people so that they can derive inspiration from the act.”They started cleaning on October 27, with the prior permission of the stationmaster. The Regional Transport Officer provided them with the cleaning equipment.

Liandra Pius, one of the students, told The Times of India, “We were all in full spirits. There was so much enthusiasm that each one of us were actively involved in the clean-up act. We were least bothered about our clothes getting soiled.”The students washed and scrubbed one luxury bus and one ordinary bus, and it took them three hours to finish the job. They hope this exercise will make citizens think twice before vandalising public property.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE - Crystal Vision ups the outputs on new distribution amplifiers

$

Crystal Vision has released two video distribution amplifiers for its new Vision frame system, the 3GDA-VF and VDA-VF. The 3GDA-VF is a video distribution amplifier with more outputs than the company has previously offered and includes remote control as standard. It can be configured as reclocking or non-reclocking and will distribute any digital video (3Gb/s, HD and SD) as well as being DVB-ASI compatible. It can also distribute MADI audio. The VDA-VF analogue video distribution amplifier has been designed to distribute SD black and burst or HD tri-level syncs reference, and can also be used to create multiple copies of analogue video. The 3GDA-VF is claimed to support more standards than any other Crystal Vision digital video DA, and can distribute 3Gb/s, HD, SD and DVB-ASI sources. It can also be used to distribute MADI (AES10) audio, allowing multiple channels of audio to be transported down a single coax cable while supporting the industry standard payload of 64 channels at a sampling rate of 48 kHz.

With its main application the distribution of SD black and burst or HD tri-level syncs reference, the VDA-VF can also be used to distribute SD analogue composite or HD or SD analogue component video. Features include gain adjustments of +/-3dB in 0.1dB steps, a clamp and high quality equalisation which will correct distortion to the analogue signal caused by up to 300m of cable  length. Using standard BNCs, the 3GDA-VF provides six outputs from the VR20 single slot rear module and 12 outputs from the VR15 double slot rear module. Crystal Vision is also offering a Micro BNCs rear module for the first time (the VR16), which gives nine outputs in a single slot. Using the single slot VR18 with the VDA-VF gives five analogue outputs, with 12 outputs possible with the dual slot VR17. The VDA-VF additionally includes a loop-through of its differential input, which is independent of the VDA-VF and so allows the card to be removed without losing the looped-through source. Crystal Vision's managing director, Philip Scofield, said:“Updating our digital and analogue video distribution amplifiers for the fantastic Vision 3 frame has allowed us to introduce economic signal monitoring and control as well more outputs for what is still a fundamental part of broadcast systems.”

Inspiration-From Paralysis To A Paralympian: The Inspiring Story Of Deepa Malik

$
0
0

For those who have heard of her, Deepa Malik's name is synonymous with grit and courage. Her story is not just another inspirational tale; it will leave even the best of the best biting the dust. After being diagnosed with a spinal tumour in 1999, she underwent 3 spinal surgeries and got 183 stitches between her shoulder blades in a period of 14 years. If you think that stopped her, you're grossly mistaken. That only made her stronger and more determined. Here's her incredible story.Raised in an army family and married to an army officer, she is used to braving difficulties that most of us can't even think of facing. The mother of two was diagnosed with the tumour in while her husband was fighting in the Kargil war and her daughter was unwell.

It was, of course, a very difficult period for the family. While her husband went on to win the war for India, she won her own battle as well. She was left paralysed from the waist down and the doctors told her that she would never walk again. What the doctors didn't know is that Deepa Malik wasn't any ordinary woman. Giving up was not her style. She decided to become a swimmer, a biker, an athlete & an adventure junkie. And all this at the age of 36!Now, aged 45, she is one of India's 19 Paralympians at Rio 2016.At an age when most athletes are considering retirement, Deepa was just getting started. She began by joining the Himalayan Motorsports Association and conquered an 8-day 1,700 km bike ride to 18,000 feet in sub-zero temperatures.

She even rode on the TV reality show Roadies, by personal invitation of Raghu & the Roadies crew.A huge fan of biking, she took up swimming to make her shoulders and arms stronger for the bike rides. But her prowess in the water was just as amazing as on the open road. She went on to break multiple records in the sport. Deepa has entered the Limca Book of Records 4 times. She completed the longest drive in India (3,278 kms from Chennai to Delhi) in 2013.In 2011, she became the first paraplegic woman to drive to Khardunga La pass, the highest motorable pass in the world. She rode a special bike for 58 kms in 2009.In 2008, she crossed a 1 km stretch of the Yamuna river against the current.

If you think that's all there is to her story, you're still nowhere close. The woman can also do javelin throws and shot put, an event in which she will be participating at the Rio Paralympics. She had earlier been shortlisted for India's delegation to the 2012 London Paralympics, but since India had received only 10 spots, an all-male contingent was sent and she missed her chance. This time, however, India is sending 19 athletes. She is 45 years old, or should I say she holds 45 years of experience of fighting spirit and is well in contention of bringing home a medal from Rio.At the national level, Deepa has won around 54 medals to add to the 13 at international level in javelin throws, shot put & swimming. So the records are on her side and so is her habit of winning. Her amazing achievements in the world of swimming and her passion to follow her dreams got her an Arjuna Award in 2012.
