Technology Updates:BT's new flexible OB van
BT Media & Broadcast hits the road with first OB vehicle in the UK able to transmit multiple HD and UHD visions via simultaneous fibre and satellite. The outside broadcast arm of BT Media & Broadcast, is parking its brand new hybrid fibre and satellite UHD links truck at major Premiership football and Rugby Union venues across the country. The outside broadcast vehicle in question, named TES52, is the first OB truck in the UK with the ability to transmit multiple HD and UHD/4K visions via fibre and satellite simultaneously.“The fact that this vehicle can do three UHD visions on fibre and one UHD vision on satellite at the same time is such a unique feature,” explained Mark Wilson-Dunn, VP at BT Media and Broadcast. “We have other trucks that can do two, soon to be three UHD visions on fibre, but having the UHD on fibre and satellite simultaneously makes this truck really special!”Systems integrator Megahertz’s design team worked closely with BT TVOB engineers to provide this flexible UHD vehicle capable of transmitting pictures both through its roof-mounted, Ku-band, satellite antenna and via BT’s own fibre network, which connects over 150 major sports venues and news outlets across the UK.
For live event coverage, failure is not acceptable
Construction challenges
The main challenge during construction of the TES52 was fitting everything inside the allocated space, according to Wilson-Dunn, who also noted that chassis weight limits impact not only the construction of the truck, but driver hours when the truck is in use.“The other challenge was that UHD technology has only just started hitting phase two,” he said. “During phase one, it was not mature at all. Now the technology is a little established but there’s still some future growth or development that needs to happen particularly when it comes to compressing encoders into a smaller form factor.”The TES52 is a step up from TES51 UHD truck that Megahertz also built in 2014, and offers greater encoding capability. It is also fitted with two 750W amplifiers and built on a 7T Iveco Daily chassis. The TES52 monitors multiple signals via a 4K Miranda multi-viewer on to a Sony 4K screen, with two 4K/HD Marshall monitors for additional qualitative signal monitoring and an HD Phabrix for test signal generation and checking. The truck supports up to sixteen fibre links in HD mode, or three 4K/UHD and four HD links, using the intelligent video networking platform (IVNP) and BT's core MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) network. Its on-board, 192-port Snell router is capable of handling a mixture of 4K, 3Gb/s and HD baseband signals, and ASI transport streams.Wilson-Dunn pinpoints the encoders as one of the key technologies on board, particularly the Ericsson MPEG4 system, which allows the truck to provide either three UHD visions or twelve HD visions out. “It’s the volume of video services that you can get out of the truck which is incredible.”
Premiere in Hull
The TES52 was put to work the very first day it was delivered by Megahertz, covering a football match in Hull. “It delivered 12 MPEG-encoded HD visions on its first outing. That’s quite remarkable - no other truck in the UK can do that.”It also stopped off at the IBC show in Amsterdam, where it demonstrated how live UHD/4K content passes through the vehicle by providing visitors with a live view of two rugby matches in three different manners, one of which involved the use of the new Ericsson HEVC encoder and one of which saw the truck run HEVC over satellite. “We had three visions going into that particular truck in two days, all in UHD, which we believe was a world first.”Wilson-Dunn is unreserved in stating that BT Media & Broadcast lives and dies by the capabilities of its live production vehicles on site. “For live event coverage, failure is not acceptable,” he said. “We have to be totally confident in the service that we deliver and having a reliable truck is absolutely essential and that’s why we worked with Megahertz as a systems integrator.”
Since Amsterdam, it has covered an average of one event a week in UHD, the highlights of which include a Welsh Rugby Union event in Llanelli, a Premiership football match in Leicester and the October 20 Manchester United Europa cup match.“At the moment, the rights for most UHD services are a bit nebulous in terms of third party takers, but we were convinced that in time there would be a requirement for a UHD third party feed to become available and that is indeed happening,” concluded Wilson-Dunn. “We have requests for third party feeds for other sports now too. So having three encoders or a truck capable of doing three encoders in UHD is fundamental to the future of our business.”

Inspiration:Noida Farmer’s 17-YO Son Invents Machine That Can Harness Wind Energy Generated by Moving Vehicles
Ideas are like free birds. One never knows when, how and who will be struck by an ingenious thought at any given time. That’s exactly what happened to 17-year-old Akash Singh. This student of Government Polytechnic College in Manesar, Gurgaon, had always enjoyed travelling by train, standing in the doorway, feeling the wind in his hair. While he loved the experience, he would also wonder about the tremendous energy the wind possesses and if there’s a way to utilise the sheer force of it.A curious mind and an idea suddenly came together, and Akash worked for two years to develop a machine that produced wind energy from moving vehicles.
“The main problem I was trying to target is that all our major ways of producing energy are exhaustible and highly polluting. So I wanted to focus on a renewable and non-polluting resource to get energy from. That’s the reason I chose wind energy,” says Akash.
The machine is based on the fundamental principle of wind energy, but its application is innovative. Just like windmills, the machine acts as a ‘wind convertor’. When placed on the roofs of fast-moving vehicles like buses, autos and trains, it can produce energy from the forceful flow of the wind. Akash claims that the energy thus generated can be stored in a battery.
“The device consists of a four-blade set up in the shape of a Swastika, with light hollow circular objects at the ends of all four points, which would help rotate the device according to the wind. The gear box dynamo is set in the middle of the four blades. As the wind convertor starts rotating, with its help the dynamo also moves and generates power. Our trains and buses travel approximately at a speed of around 40-80 kmph. The estimated speed of wind required for the machine to work is about 30 kmph. This means that the speed of the vehicles is enough for the device to work,” explains Akash.
Pondering over his invention, Akash realized that the best place to utilise this machine would be on the roofs of trains. He wrote about his idea to the Prime Minister’s Office and was overjoyed to receive a response. The PMO forwarded his proposal to the Ministry of Railways. Soon, he heard from the Ministry that his idea had been further forwarded to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This motivated Akash to spend some more time improving his machine, which is currently being tested by this Ministry.

Prasar Bharati to launch DD Arun Prabha in north-east India on 25 December
DD Arun Prabha will be Doordarshan’s second channel for the north-east and the move is part of the public broadcaster’s bid to strengthen its activities in the region.New Delhi: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is all set to launch a new 24x7 satellite television channel in the north-east on 25 December to cater to the region’s cultural sensibilities. The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has allocated a sum of Rs7 crore to the broadcaster for the launch of the channel named DD Arun Prabha. Prasar Bharati runs Doordarshan and All India Radio.
“DD Arun Prabha will showcase programmes on the diverse culture of the north eastern states. The ministry has already sanctioned money for this channel,” said A. Surya Prakash, chairperson, Prasar Bharati. The decision was taken by the Prasar Bharati board in a meeting on 17 October. This will be Doordarshan’s second channel for the north-eastern region. The state-owned broadcaster already runs DD North-East, which telecasts entertainment and information-based programmes in Assamese, Bengali, English and other languages of the north-east region. “The existing channel has not been able to meet the cultural needs of the area because of its cultural diversity and multiple languages and dialects,” said Prakash.
The proposal to launch DD Arun Prabha was initially announced in Narendra Modi government’s first budget. The proposal was subject to clearances till now. This move also comes as a part of Doordarshan’s initiative to strengthen its activities in the north-east.In September, Doordarshan had partnered with an outdoor music festival of Arunachal Pradesh called Ziro Festival of Music, which is organized by a local cultural organisation, tourism department of Arunachal Pradesh and the ministry of development of north-east region.“North-east is an area that needs our focus. There are so many states with such diverse cultures and languages. We had asked the government a few years ago that every state in that region needs a separate channel, given the diversity,” said Prakash.
In its 17 October meeting, the Prasar Bharati board had also given an ultimatum to Doordarshan to auction the prime time programming slots of DD National to private producers. The broadcaster has already conducted two failed application rounds (citing shortcomings in applications) and is planning to conduct a final amended round, starting 15 November.Doordarshan is planning to conduct the auction on 14-15 December, and will roll out the new programming from February 2017.

Inspiration: Engineering Sudents from NIT-K Convert Beach Into a School for Underprivileged Children
A UNESCO study from July 2016 says that India has the largest number of adolescent school dropouts in the world; a total of 47 million students do not progress to upper secondary school. This study also adds that “a key obstacle to achieving the agreed target is persistent disparities in education participation linked to sex, location and wealth.”So, the fact that children who live in the coastal town of Surathkal, Mangalore often drop out of school due to lack of financial resources, and coercion on their parents’ part to help out with household chores, is not surprising. In order to reverse this trend, a group of 10 engineering students from NIT Karnataka have started conducting free evening classes on the beach for children of fishermen who live in settlements close to their campus.
The beach schooling project was initiated at Incident, which is NIT-K’s annual cultural fest. I-Care, a social initiative by the Incident team, roped in underprivileged students from preschool to pre-university, in the backyard of the Sadashiva temple, to teach them academic subjects. The students launched the pilot project a couple of years ago but it wasn’t very successful so they relaunched it this year on October 15, Dr. Abdul Kalam’s birthday. One of the student volunteers, Kaushik R Udupi, told Times of India, “Since volunteers left Surathkal after completing their course (a couple of years ago), the classroom for children project fell through. During a visit to the Sadashiva temple, a student pursuing PU course urged NIT-K students to continue the programme. Volunteers signed up to revive the programme.”
The new-age beach gurukul is immensely popular among the students because of the way it seamlessly blends education with extracurricular activities. Apart from learning core subjects like maths, science and English, the students are encouraged to participate in and learn from various activities like stargazing, football, kabaddi, sand art, cycling, etc.Two children studying in the beach school have represented the district in hockey tournaments. And a family of four has started attending classes, inspired by a child in their household who was enrolled in the programme. According to a press release, a student in Class 4, named Akkamahadevi, now helps out her sister who is in Class 7, with math problems.
As of now, the classes are conducted in the open air; lessons in grammar are read aloud accompanied by the sounds of temple bells ringing and waves crashing. But one of the volunteers, Vishal S, told Times of India that they will construct a hut on the beach for evening school if more volunteers join them.
