India’s first free-to-air (FTA) kids channel Maha Cartoon TV will launch on 1 November on Freedish, the free DTH platform of pubcaster Prasar Bharati. Maha Cartoon TV is already available on small cable TV networks in the Hindi-speaking market (HSM). The distribution footprint of the channel will be increased in the next few months. The channel is being launched by Teleone Consumers Product, a teleshopping company owned by the DV Group of Companies. Teleone already owns and operates a teleshopping channel, Teleshopping, and an FTA Hindi movie channel, Maha Movie. This will be the third channel from the company. The Hindi language channel is targeted at people aged 4–14. The content will include localised animated shows as well as international acquired content. The company is also producing content through in-house production team. The key shows on the channel include ‘Mooshak Gungun’, ‘Bal Chanakya’, ‘Panchtantra Stories’ and ‘Ciko’. The channel will also feature foreign content dubbed in Hindi besides movies for kids. ‘Mooshak Gungun’ is the Indian adaption of the classical cat and mouse chase show. ‘Bal Chanakya’ is based on an Indian kid with a sharp mind and a strong ability to overcome various obstacles with ease and composure. ‘Panchtantra Stories’ will be a compilation of short stories of the Panchtantra, showcasing India’s cultural heritage, wildlife and ecosystem. ‘Ciko’ is a knowledge-based series that will give viewers information about interesting facts. Apart from cartoon series, the channel will air interactive and educative programming. Towards this end, the channel will have a techno commercial show, ‘Techno Kids’, aimed at harnessing kids’ imagination and making great gizmos from day-to-day items for use in homes. The FTA channel is a result of two years of planning on various aspects of creation and compilation of programming for kids. The company said that it saw an opportunity in the FTA kids. Almost all kids channels are paid and mainly targeted at urban geography. DV Group CMD Darshan Singh said, “I relate to this audience as I come from rural area. I think this channel will be a great gift to rural kids, who do not have access to quality kids content. The channel is aimed at providing entertainment and knowledge to kids.” DV Group MD and founder director Vishvajeet Sharma added, “Today we have more than 20 pay kids channels but not one FTA kids channel. There is a huge opportunity in the FTA kids space, as kids form a large chunk of viewership base in rural India.”

Cruel hands of destiny has snatched away from us, one of our brilliant, energetic young officer Neeraj Goel in a road accident near his home at Merrut, today, just few hours ago.

Neeraj was working Dy. Director General (E), Studio Maintenance Section at Akashvani Directorate, New Delhi. He had earlier worked at various sections of Directorate - M&C Section, IT Division etc. and had left a mark every where. He was Dy. Director General(E) of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar during the devastating floods of 2015 and had handled the situation bravely.

An officer of year 88 batch of IBES, Neeraj was full of life and vigour.  He was a product of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantanagar and was just 49 year old. His demise has shaken us all and has created a big vacuum at office and at home. He has left behind two daughters, wife and old mother. We pray to almighty to give strength to them to bear this irreparable loss and May departed soul of our friend Neeraj rest in peace. Please pray.

Enthralling ‘Chitrakala Avadhanam’ - Vijayawada

$
0
0

If ‘Avadhanam’ is an exclusive literary form for Telugus who enjoy the beauty of literature, ‘Chitrakala Avadhanam’ is a form that quenches the thirst of an artiste who can create wonders with his brush. In ‘Ashtavadhanam,’ ‘Satavadhanam’ or ‘Sahasravadhanam,’ the avadhani has to answer tricky questions in the form of poems. When it comes to ‘Chitrakala Avadhanam,’ the answer should be in the form of a painting. Even as the questioner is giving finer details of his poser, the artiste has to start his work on the canvas — first with pencil strokes and subsequently with myriad colours and shades. Singampalli Satyanarayana (72), a veteran artiste, performed the magic on the canvases in response to the challenges posed by a classical musician, a classical dancer, a Veena player, a guitarist, a fellow artiste and scholars of Sanskrit and Telugu literature. In a three-hour show, Mr. Satyanarayana brought out nine master pieces of water colours in response to the scholarly questions, besides providing outlines for the ‘Navarasas’ in the form of nine sketches. The occasion was the 53rd anniversary of ‘Navarasa,’ a city-based theatre organisation at Suryakala Mandiram on Sunday. Renowned Carnatic singer Peddada Suryakumari began the show by reciting ‘Bantureethi..’ a composition of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja. By the time she finished her recital, Mr. Satyanarayana created the image of Sri Thyagaraja playing his Tambura in front of the idols of Lord Sitarama.

The next challenge came in the form of classical dancer S. Krishna Kumar, who performed for Sadasiva Brahmendra’s ‘Manasa Sancharare.’ Mr. Satyanarayana captured one movement and recreated it on the canvas. Veena player Akondi Madhusudan played ‘Sarasa Samadaana,’ while guitarist and prince of Pithapuram Rajah Rao Mahipathi Rama Ratnakara Rau performed his own composition on the foreign instrument. After the scholars — Gottimukkala Venkata Laskhmi Narasimha Sastry, Koruprolu Gowri Naidu, Kakaraparthi Durga Prasad and Garikapati Suryanarayana — posed their questions in the form of poems. The auditorium gave a thumping applause to Mr. Satyanarayana, besides a grand felicitation by founder secretary of the organisation S.S.R.K. Guru Prasad. “Though I have 12 such performances so far, this is close to my heart, as I got an opportunity to perform in Kakinada, which is close to my home town Peddapuram,” said Mr. Satyanarayana, who settled down in Tirupati after retiring as artiste from the Agriculture University there at the end of a 36-year service. “My brother Chandra Rao was my first inspiration in art. B.K.S. Varma and Yugandhar inspired me to take this type of challenges,” he said. Station director of All India Radio, Vijayawada, A. Malleswara Rao compered the show, while Akondi Venkata Suryanarayana Murthy entertained the audience with his funny one-liners.

Telecasting a strong message - AdhaFULL on DD

$

Tara is helpless when her father repeatedly gets violent and abusive with her mother. Every time he hits her, Tara runs out and rings the doorbell to save her mother from the torment. Tara is a character in a new adolescent TV drama series on DD’s National network. The show,AdhaFULL(Half-full), has been created in collaboration with BBC Media Action (BBC’s international NGO and development communication arm) in partnership with UNICEF. The 78-episode series is a clever whodunit where three teenagers in a make-believe town called Badlipur solve one case per week. The show tackles important issues that plague our nation. For instance: child marriage, sex-selective abortion, female foeticide, dowry, fair skin and beauty myths, stereotyping of women and girls, sexual health, financial dependence, higher education for girls, school drop-outs, sanitation, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health and gender-based violence.

The series will be supported by a radio show where RJ Nikki, who plays the role of the school teacher in the series, will host a chat show that will feature celebrities from the world of entertainment. The aim, producers say, is to engage and entertain young Indians between the ages of 10 and 19. It also seeks to reach out to parents. “India is home to 243 million adolescents,” says UNICEF’s India representative Louis- Georges Arsenault. “About one-fifth of the world’s population in the age group of 10to 19 lives in India.”

Catalysts of change

He says, “It is imperative that they break their leash and spring forth to succeed. We need to support them on their rights, walk with them, and partner them in their aspirations for them to be the next generation of leaders and catalysts of change.” Radharani Mitra, National Creative Director and Executive Producer, BBC Media Action, says young lives and aspirations are about the 3Cs: curiosity, challenge and creativity. “They are willing to re-evaluate, and take chances, but often feel limited. Through the TV series and its characters, we want to engage our young viewers and their parents in a journey of change, so that they feel they can negotiate and work with the 3Cs.” Devika Bahl, consulting producer for BBC Media Action, says AdhaFULL will prove that challenging themes, engaging stories and endearing characters are not mutually exclusive. The show has a soul and a heart beating for the young adults. “It is witty, vibrant, palpable and very real,” she says. For Harsh Mayar, an award-winning child actor, his modest upbringing as a son of a small-time tent dealer in Delhi, helped him get into the skin of a street-savvy survivor and orphan. “I feel nervous when I go to a five-star hotel as I am not used to that kind of place, attention or glamour,” he says. “Even my English is not good. I could well imagine what an orphan would feel given my life’s experience.” As for his character, Harsh says, “There are intensely emotional scenes in the series and doing them really drained me as the character is very demanding. Joining the cast is 12-year-old Neelanshi Singh, who plays Tara, a school-going student who found it awkward at first to deal with domestic violence on screen. Then there’s Ahsaas Channa who plays Kitty, the elder of the trio in the series, who found the silence and prejudices surrounding menstruation not easy to deal with. But standing up to pressures of child marriage from her on-screen family and performing stunts on the sets was liberating. Producer Sudhir Sharma feels it is not just another run-of-the-mill show whose success is determined solely by TRPs. Although the goal is to gain wide viewership, the intent and purpose behind AdhaFULL has already made it a special one. He says, “Superb concept, high on entertainment, full of meaningful content, what else you can ask for from a show?”

AdhaFULL, Doordarshan National, 7.30 p.m., every Friday and Sunday.

DD relaxes norms for prime time slot bidders as incentive

In a third attempt to attract producers to bid for prime time slots, Doordarshan has announced a series of concessions once the programmers come on board, including lowering base price for a 30-minute slot to Rs. 150,000.DD sources told indiantelevision.com that the only eligibility criterion that has been relaxed is that the basic price for auction has come down to Rs 150,000 (Rs 1.5 lakh) for a 30-minute slot. It was Rs 250,000 when the auction was announced in June this year, and was then decreased to Rs 200,000 when the new date was set for the second auction in early September 2016.The details of the criteria for bidders likely to be made public sometime later today and the prospective bidders can apply by 22 November 2016. Most of the other eligibility norms remain the same as earlier in the New Content Acquisition Scheme that has been approved by Prasar Bharati Board.Producers/production houses that have produced at least 200 hours of general entertainment programming, including feature film productions in any Indian language in the last three years, and have a turnover of minimum Rs. 30 million per annum in the field of TV and film production in the last three financial years are eligible to apply.Applicants for weekend slots in the genres of reality, game and quiz are required to have produced 100 hours of such content in the last three years.

However, DD sources told indiantelevision.com that certain changes had been made for successful bidders to promote their programmes.Successful bidders will now also be allowed to approach and obtain advertisements from public service undertaking for their programmes on Doordarshan, which was not permitted earlier. Doordarshan has also laid down a compulsory number of promotional commercials, which will be free, on various channels of Doordarshan network. In addition, successful bidders will be allowed to ‘bank’ their free commercial time. That is, in case a successful bidder has not exhausted the number of promotional commercials (totalling 240 seconds) permitted before the telecast of a particular programme, the balance can be used as and when the programme picks up in popularity. The exit option has also been relaxed: in case a producer decides to opt out of the scheme, he will need to give only 45 days notice instead of three months. The lock-in period for this has also been reduced from one year to six months.
