Inspiration-This Indian professor from Canada has invented futuristic self-repairing roads for India

Nemkumar Banthia, a professor of Indian origin living in Canada, has come up with a technology that can be used to make roads that repair themselves. The roads built using this technology last longer and are cheaper to build. They are more sustainable from an environmental perspective too.Professor Nemkumar, after finishing his graduation from IIT Delhi, shifted to Canada 34 years ago. He is currently a part of the civil engineering department at the University of British Columbia (UBC) located in Vancouver. Since 2014, however, Nemkumar and his team have constantly been engaged in Thondebavi village, situated 90 km from Bengaluru, building a demonstration project to test this technology.

The road is about 60 percent less thick than a regular Indian road, and hence costs less in terms of materials. Most of the cement is replaced with flyash, leading to further lessening of the road’s carbon footprint. Explaining the road’s in-built crack healing to Hindustan Times, Professor Nemkumar said,“These are fibres that have a hydrophilic nano-coating on them. Hydrophilia means they attract water, and this water then becomes available for crack healing. Every time you have a crack, you always have unhydrated cement, and this water is now giving it the hydration capability, producing further silicates, which actually closes the crack in time.”

The professor said that the roads cost 30 percent less than the standard construction cost, and can last up to 15 years. According to Daily Hunt, this is a massive leap from the two year repair cycle most Indian roads suffer from. Apart from Karnataka, discussions are underway to implement the project in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh as well.

Doordarshan earned a sum of Rs 1293 million (Rs 129 crore ) by sale of three new slots and extension of the licence of another 24 on the 31st auction of its free-to-air direct-to-home platform FreeDish on 20 and 21 October. The auction was called off on 6 October 2016 because of technical glitches. The new channels which successfully bid for the slots are -- News State Uttarakhand/Uttar Pradesh, 9x Bajao TV, and a teleshop channel.

A DD announcement had earlier said the reserve price per slot is Rs 4.3 crore. FreeDish has not raised its reserve price, although the price for one channel went up to Rs 5.3 crore in an earlier auction. The reserve price had been Rs 3.7 crore till last year but was raised to its present level for the 25th e-auction in January. The e-Auction was conducted by M/s. C1 India Pvt. Ltd., Noida which also conducted the first stage of the FM Radio Phase III auctions on behalf of Prasar Bharati. Earlier this month, a senior DD official told indiantelevision.com that the “glitches were experienced by the bidders”. Following several complaints received in this regard, “the Competent Authority has cancelled the e-Auction conducted for the slots on 5 and 6 October 2016”. DD had made it clear that all registered bidders for the 31st e-Auction will be eligible for participating in the fresh bidding process on the rescheduled date, “which will be communicated in due course of time”. Meanwhile, DD has formally announced that it is now capable of carrying 104 television channels on its FTA FreeDish and the 24 channels being added to the present 80 channels will be the first to be launched on MPEG4 technology. DD officials also confirmed that FreeDish will soon be capable of carrying up to 250 channels. The official confirmed that a Call Centre would be set up for subscribers as soon as MPEG 4 becomes fully operational. The customer care service will have extensive complaint redressal mechanism.
DD has decided to implement Indian Conditional Access System (iCAS) on DD Freedish Platform. iCAS, an initiative of the Central Government, is being initially introduced in the 24 MPEG-4 Channels. The introduction of iCAS will provide enhanced viewing experience to the viewers. DD officials said these additional 24 MPEG-4 SDTV channels will be available to viewers in FTA mode. The existing viewers will continue to get 80 SDTV channels, but will have to obtain iCAS-enabled authorised Set Top Boxes for accessing all 104 channels. Although FreeDish will remain free to air with no monthly or periodic fee, the viewers will be required to register with DD Freedish on getting the new STB from Doordarshan authorised STB dealers. FreeDish was launched with a modest bouquet of 33 channels in December 2004 and now carries 80 TV channels and 32 radio channels. The platform has a bouquet of channels consisting of 22 Doordarshan channels, two Parliamentary channels, seven general entertainment channels, 18 movie channels, 13 news channels, seven ,music channels, three religious channels and eight channels of other genres.
After active consultation with all the stakeholders, DD has started the process for rolling out MPEG-4 STBs for its DD Freedish with iCAS. Doordarshan has invited e-Applications for authorisation/empanelment of STB original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to sell / distribute DD approved CAS enabled DD Freedish STBs in India. In this regard a pre bid meeting with the Indian STB manufacturers was held on 3 October 2016. Once the Indian STB OEMs are authorised by DD, they will start manufacturing quality STBs in India. They will set up their distribution network all over India for selling Indian STBs and providing services to Doordarshan Free Dish viewers. The participation amount (EMD) in the e-Auction was Rs.1.5 crore which had to be deposited in advance before or by 12 noon on the date of auction along with processing fee of Rs.10,000 (non-refundable) in favour of PB (BCI) Doordarshan Commercial Service, New Delhi. Incremental amount for the auction will be Rs 10 lakh and the time for every slot e-auction will be of fifteen minutes duration. This may be extended by five minutes if a bid is received before the closing time. Of the reserve price, Rs 1.1 crore will be deposited within one month of placement and another Rs 1.1 crore within two months along with service tax of 14.5 per cent on the bid amount. The balance bid amount will be deposited within six months, failing which the deposited amount will be forfeited and the channel discontinued after a 21-day discontinuation notice.

Inspiration- Rajendra Singh 'The Waterman of Rajasthan'

Rajendra Singh, is a winner of 2001 Ramon Magsaysay Award For Community leadership. He leads an organization, Tarun Bhagat Sangh, which is supported by the United Nations, USIAD, and the World bank. He was highly appreciated and recognized for the efforts he made for harvesting rain water water by building check dams in Rajasthan. It is because of this he is popularly known as the 'Jal Pusush' or the 'Water man of Rajasthan'

Since 1985, Tarun Bhagat Sangh, headed by Rajendra Singh have been working in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, focusing on the revival of Johads, streams and rivers in the area. They were of the opinion that without water in region no other significant development could take place. And with the successful implementation of the programme and with the total dedication of all the team members along with the cooperation of the villagers, today more than 4,500 working Johads dot Alwar and surrounding districts. (Johad is concave structure which collects and store water throughout the year. It is used for the drinking purpose by humans and cattle).

Above all what is really commendable is that they work for the revitalization of the five rivers that went dry for the long time. River Ruparel, that went dead, has stared flowing again after the span of three decades. Even the Arvari River basin, which was once barren became a water source, due to the active participation and hard work of the team members. On the other sides rejuvenation of the traditional water harvesting structures on such a large scale is a positive indication of development in the state. And it was definitely a sincere effort by Rajendra Singh for eradicating the scarcity of water in the rural areas of Rajasthan. In many villages people have started building Johads of their own. Now the women need not to travel to the far away places to collect water, fuel wood and fodder. They educated the mind of the people and made them understand the importance of water conservation. It is a perfect solution for the long standing problem of water in the remote areas. Water harvesting is a good way to tackle with the problem of drought and floods.

Rajendra Singh along with his other team members persuaded the villagers to rejuvenate their functioning style, which in turn changed the total life line of Rajasthan. He has plans to cover more of 45 villages in the next one year. He has also decided to take up the project of river Luni, the only flowing water source in western parts of Rajasthan. The condition of the river is getting worst with the day by day increasing pollution from the numerous textile units Pali. Organization of Rajendra Singh has overall 45 full time employees and 230 part time workers. He is a charismatic personality and the real hero of poor. He spends eight months of the year on road working day and night without seeing the face of his wife and son. Until 1984, he knew nothing about the water and its conservation methods. It were the villagers who showed me the value of water, and till date The work done by the Rajendra Singh is a inspiration for the million others in the nation.

A tale of many talents on the airwaves, celluloid & music

From training in classical vocals to dabbling in the television industry in its salad days, to becoming a renowned thespian, Prasad Gurav has had his fingers in several piesand all of them very successfully. In the '80s, while he was still learning music under the tutelage of his fatherwell-known classical vocalist Shankar GuravPrasad was bitten by the theatre bug. He embarked on an uncharted journey into the world of drama in 1990 and soon realised the downsides of restricting himself solely to theatre. Unlike other Goan youth passionate about theatre, Prasad joined the National School of Drama's repertory in Delhi to spread his wings. The shift in art form, he says, wasn't much of a challenge coming from a family with an inclination for performing arts. "My father was always supportive. He did not stop me when I chose theatre over music as a career," he says, adding that his knowledge of music contributed greatly to his pursuit of becoming a better performer. But shifting to theatre did not mean forsaking music. Prasad holds a sangeet visharad (vocal)a title equivalent to a degree in musicfrom the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Mumbai, and a diploma in theatre arts, Kala Academy, Goa. The two art forms, he says, are complementary. Soon after he moved to Delhi, Prasad landed a role portraying an IAS officer in Manzileina popular television serial on Doordarshanthat catapulted the newcomer from Goa into the limelight.

In an era when Doordarshan was the sole channel airing serials, and run-of-the-mill saas-bahu sagas were unheard of, this was an unexpected break for the young man. But did the curveball throw him off track? No, he says. For though theatre was his first love, he had gone to Delhi in search of greater exposure and that was what television offered him. He had no trouble adapting to a new medium that satiated his thirst for wider horizons. Forever in pursuit of excellence, Prasad did not linger in television for long when no substantial roles came his way despite having proved his mettle. "I was not to be satisfied doing mediocre roles, till quality work came my way," he says, explaining why he returned to Goa soon after and to the stage as well. While his move may seem imprudent in today's day and age, Prasad doesn't regret it in the least and is content working in the field of experimental theatre. He is engrossed in acting, directing and producing dramas, alongside carrying forth his musical lineage.

Although Indian classical music may not have been his field of choice, his contribution to it is in no way meagre. Having a completed a doctoral thesis on svatantryottar Hindi rang sangeet from Goa University, he continues to train budding vocalists at his music school in Porvorim. He has worked in several noted plays, such as Antigone, Agnihotra, Andha Yug, Julius Caesar, Mitrachi Ghoshta, Bhint and Sonata and won best actor awards for Arya Chanakya and King Oedipus. In a career spanning two decades, Prasad has worked with noted thespians like B V Karanth, Bhaskar Chandavarkar, Madhav Vatve and Bhanu Bharati, among others. His struggle now, is choosing between what the masses want and what fulfils his creative spirit.

DD to carry messages to security forces

Based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s outreach to Army soldiers and paramilitary forces, ‘Sandesh to Soldiers’ which encourages people to write in on his portal, MyGov.in and to the public broadcaster Doordarshan to express their solidarity with the forces, Doordarshan will be devising programmes around people’s messages to soldiers.

The outreach is expected to impact at least 10 crore people. Apart from Mr. Modi, several celebrities are also expected to endorse this campaign that will run for the next ten days till Diwali. “Prime Minister spent Diwali of 2014 with the people of J&K after the devastating floods there and 2015 with soldiers posted at Siachen. This year too he wanted to mark Diwali for people who may not be able to join their families for this festival,” according to a source in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Musicathon: sixty years of symphony

Six decades and on, the carnatic vocalist duo of R N Thyagarajan and R N Tharanathan, popularly known as Rudrapatnam Brothers, have been entertaining the country with their performances and preserving the classicism of the Carnatic tradition. Hailing from the Thyagaraja lineage, a legacy that has been passed down to three or four generations, the duo has met many maestros of their times during their musical journey. “We have visited legends like M S Subbulakshmi and Lalgudi Jayaraman,” Thyagarajan says. The latter even pointed out their mistakes to them after concerts. “We also sat down with Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer to get some notations.”

In October, which marks the 60th year of their togetherness, the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) honoured them for their lifelong services to performing arts.Having sung at several prestigious sabhas in the country, including the Sri Rama Seva Mandali in Bengaluru, where they live now, and in forums in the US, the UK, Singapore and Malaysia, they have performed at 2,500 concerts to date. “That’s only an estimate, but the number is definitely in thousands,” says Thyagarajan. “And mostly we’ve performed together.”For Thyagarajan, a master’s in mathematics, who retired as deputy director of Doordarshan in 2003, and Tharanathan, a PhD in organic chemistry, who retired as assistant director of Central Food Technical Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru, a decade ago, concentrating on work and performance was not easy at all. “As we held responsible positions in our organisations, we couldn’t afford to slack off even a little at work,” says Thyagarajan. Monday mornings were particularly difficult as the brothers often arrived at work directly from the railway station. “I would get my students to take me home during the 10.15 am coffee break so that I could freshen up,” says Tharanathan.

Going down the memory lane, they add, “We grew up in a musical environment. Our father R K Narayana Swamy and his three brothers—R K Venkatarama Shastry, R K Ramanathan and R K Srikantan—were accomplished musicians. But we began performing even before our formal training began.” The elder of the two, Thyagarajan, says: “Our father was disheartened by the lack of opportunities he got despite his perseverance.” He even ignored our mother’s requests to train us, his brother adds. But this didn’t put them off. They had no radio at home, but they would listen to the programmes played on their Mysuru neighbour’s receiver. They would take down notations of the pieces they liked. “So we could sing them later,” says Thyagarajan, who also learned to read Tamil, while serving in Doordarshan in Chennai, so that he could access more classical notations. When Thyagarajan was 11 and Tharanathan nearly nine, their grandmother and a maternal uncle organised a concert for their debut public performance at Mysuru’s Vontikoppul neighbourhood.

यथा नाम तथा गुण को शत प्रतिशत चरितार्थ करने वाली इन विदुषी ने फ्रांस के लघुकहानीकार मोपासां की चर्चित कहानियों का अंग्रेज़ी से हिंदी में अनुसृजन भी किया है । इनकी पुस्तक “सूनेपन का साथ” सन्मार्ग प्रकाशन, दिल्ली से वर्ष 2002 में प्रकाशित हुई थी जिसकी समीक्षकों ने भरपूर सराहना की ।एक और पुस्तक भारतीय त्यौहारों पर प्रकाशन के लिए लगभग तैयार है ।आकाशवाणी की सेवा की शुरुआत इन्होंने एक उदघोषक के रुप में की थी । वे आकाशवाणी कानपुर और आकाशवाणी लखनऊ में 1973 से 1989 तक उदघोषक के रूप में नियुक्त रहीं। इस अवधि में ओ.बी. पर आधारित अनेक रूपक बनाए और कलाजगत कार्यक्रम की कवरेज व संचालन भी करती रहीं । आगे फ़रवरी 1989 से31दिसम्बर2008तक अपनी आगे के सेवाकाल में उन्होंने आकाशवाणी लखनऊ, उच्च शक्ति प्रेषित्र, किंग्ज़वे कैंप, दिल्ली और मुख्य अमियंता कार्यालय (उत्तर क्षेत्र), आकाशवाणी एवं दूरदर्शन, नई दिल्ली में हिंदी अधिकारी के रूप में कार्य किया। आकाशवाणी लखनऊ में कार्य करने के दौरान नगर राजभाषा कार्यान्वयन समिति, लखनऊ से हिन्दी के कार्यान्वयन के लिए निरंतर प्रथम पुरस्कार मिलता रहा। राजभाषा विभाग, (गृह मंत्रालय) के (उत्तर क्षेत्र) गाज़ियाबाद स्थित कार्यालय द्वारा “क” क्षेत्र में राजभाषा के कार्यान्वयन के लिए सन् 1998 और 1999 में इनकी तत्परता और सेवा भावना से आकाशवाणी लखनऊ को प्रथम पुरस्कार मिला।आकाशवाणी को लगभग पैंतीस साल अपनी मूल्यवान सेवाएं देकर सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद उन्होंने क्लासिकल साहित्य पढ़ने, शास्त्रीय, उपशास्त्रीय संगीत सुनने, अनुवाद करनेऔर उसकी वेटिंग करने तथा शेयर मार्केट में रुचि लेना अपनी दिनचर्या का अंग बना लिया है ।उन्होंने ब्लाग लेखक से बातचीत के दौरान बताया कि "सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद यह जीवन का वह सुनहरा अवसर है जब हम स्वयं से साक्षात्कार करते हैं। हर दिन अपने को बेहतर इंसान बनाने का प्रयास करते हैं। जब हम कुछ देर ठहर कर “म्यूज़िक ऑव द स्फ़ियर्स” सुनने की कोशिश कर सकते हैं। सच में यह अद्भुत अनुभव है। जीवन का अमृत है - “अच्छा करो, अच्छा बनो”। उनके प्रिय गायक कलाकार हैं पं0जसराज,पं0भीमसेन जोशी,उस्ताद बड़े गुलाम अली खां,पं0डी0बी0पलुस्कर ।हां,एक और बात यह कि उन्हें संस्कृत hymns सुनना बेहद पसंद है ।साथ ही फूलों और pets में उनकी जान बसती है ।उन्होंने एक स्थान पर अपनी जिन्दगी का फलसफा कुछ इन शब्दों में बयां किया है;

Product Review: A shotgun not just for weddings

Beyerdynamic’s MCE 86 II is a solid, affordable shotgun condenser microphone for every occasion

Electret shotgun microphones, such as the Beyerdynamic MCE 86 II reviewed here, are small diaphragm condensers, yet ones with key design features making them the only choice for some recording and sound reinforcement tasks. Live events (from sports to outdoor weddings), theatres and houses-of-worship (HOWs) are distinctly different environments where one or two available shotgun microphones can make the difference between sound success and a noisy disaster, as they will capture slightly-to-fairly-distant sounds like no other microphone type on the market.

How do they work? Well, a standard shotgun microphone most always features a long, multi-slotted tube paired with a supercardioid or hypercardioid capsule beneath it. In use, the desirable on-axis sound reaches the capsule, and off-axis sound largely cancels itself out first as it enters the mic's multiple side slots, thus essentially “enhancing” the on-axis sound. I’ve personally discovered several great uses for these “interference tube” microphones in places such as small-to medium-sized HOWs. Two areas in which a shotgun microphone will shine include where pastors want their own microphone out of sight (a shotgun can easily be placed multiple feet away, near the floor and hidden in a flower arrangement, for example) rather than an obtrusive podium mic; and, for example, in theatrical productions, holiday pageants and the like, where multiple children have speaking parts and there aren’t enough inputs or microphones (or both) to capture everyone. In the latter example, simply grab a shotgun microphone and boom pole then actively aim it, or “run and gun.

The MCE 86 II has been available for several years and is an affordable and truly superb-sounding hypercardioid shotgun, one I would enthusiastically recommend to anyone. It sounds fabulous and full-range, boasting a rich 50 Hz-18 kHz frequency response. It’s lightweight for its size (0.2 lbs.) and ruggedly built with a work-ready, no-scratch finish. The MCE 86 II is an affordable and truly superb-sounding hypercardioid shotgun, one I would enthusiastically recommend to anyone. In reviewing the MCE 86 II, it performed flawlessly for such HOW tasks detailed above. I left the mic at a local church to use for a couple of weeks; they responded by enthusiastically inquiring about where to buy one. For years, their revolving volunteer staff tried to capture small, youthful voices in various plays as well as the shy and public-speaking averse; now they finally had an easy-to-use and unobtrusive tool to capture them.

Next, I was hired to provide comprehensive sound services for a summertime outdoor wedding—from live band reinforcement and playback to capturing the vows for recording and sound reinforcement purposes. For this gig, the MCE 86 II was the linchpin; during dress rehearsal, I auditioned the shotgun, pointing it precisely where the bride and groom stood with the pastor. The result was an intimate, close-up spoken word track that proved to be both useful during the wedding as well as later, when paired with a wedding video shot by another party. Finally, I just happened to have the MCE 86 II in my microphone bag while running sound for a multi-artist outdoor acoustic/bluegrass event. This being a "gather round the mic" type of setting, there were two different instances during the event where one particular instrumentalist was hard to hear in the overall mix. Just as an experiment, I grabbed the MCE 86 II, put it on a stand and placed it as out of sight as I could, being careful to aim toward the “buried” player. It worked like a charm, especially during solo passages where the player needed just a small yet natural-sounding boost. The MCE 86 II’s remarkable smoothness rivals small diaphragm condensers I’d normally choose to use in the studio, and I believe that’s saying a lot, especially considering its affordable price. A shotgun microphone is simply a tool worth having in any “workhorse” microphone collection, and the MCE 86 II is an ideal specimen.

He described in detail about the Role of HAM Radio during Disaster. Amateur radio or ham radio is practiced by more than 16,000 licensed users in India. Amateur radio operators have played a vital role during disasters and national emergencies such as earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, floods, and bomb blasts, by providing voluntary emergency communications in the affected areas. Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) is a popular hobby and service in which licensed Amateur Radio operators (hams) operate communications equipment. Radio amateurs use a variety of voice, text, image, and data communications modes and have access to frequency allocations throughout the RF spectrum to enable communication across a city, region, country, continent, the world, or even into space. Amateur radio is officially represented and coordinated by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). National governments regulate technical and operational characteristics of transmissions and issue individual stations licenses with an identifying call sign. Prospective amateur operators are tested for their understanding of key concepts in electronics and the host government's radio regulations. Shri ANKIT. V. Inspiration-A Young Couple left city Life behind to Become Full-Time Organic Farmers in Mysore

The couple has received the Krishi Pandit Award given by the Department of Agriculture to individuals for best farming practices.Meet Vivek and Juli, a couple who started doing organic farming in Mysore in 1986 and have today built a unique example of sustainable living.About 30 years ago, Juli and Vivek Cariappa, a young couple from Delhi, travelled to Birwal village of Heggadadevana Kote taluka in Mysore district of Karnataka. They bought a small piece of land there and started farming. Juli was 20 at the time and Vivek was 21. He had studied economics and she had a degree in sociology. Both of them quit their jobs at a garment export company and decided to take the leap of faith – one that has now turned into a beautiful story of adventure, sustainability, green living, and lots of love.

“For me, it was about taking control of my life,” says Juli . They left Delhi in 1985 and went to a remote area located about 50 km south of Mysore. At the time, there were only three busses plying on that route and there they were – two people with a dream, starting from scratch. There was no phone or electricity where they lived for about two years and even their closest neighbours were 3 km away.
The couple didn’t know much about agriculture at the time and they had to learn on the field itself.“First we had to unlearn everything we had learnt in school because that was completely irrelevant to what we wanted to do. We were just learning to survive in an environment that was completely different from the one we grew up in, to face ourselves and our shortcomings, and to grow enough food just for ourselves – that was a big task the first couple of years,” says Juli, adding that they were fortunate to receive a small loan from their parents to help sustain them since they didn’t have any savings.

Today, they have a farm named Krac-A-Dawna, spread over an area of 40 acres. On it they grow pretty much everything they need to live – grains, oilseeds, eggs, food, fibre, spices, compost, cotton, paddy, millets, sugarcane, vegetables, etc.Except for a few “luxury items” like tea, they don’t need much from the outside world. They also cook food using biogas. Three decades on, it’s not just the two of them in the wilderness. Juli and Vivek have two sons, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law.Their children were home-schooled and they are also interested in farming and animal husbandry. As for Vivek, his advice to the present generation is just “to slow down, take it easy, and enjoy life because life is all about learning, a few successes and lots of failure.”.........
