Inspiration-10k disabled persons came together in Gujarat and broke 3 world records

Three Guinness World Records were created at a camp organised for the disabled in Navsari, Gujarat, recently. These records include highest number of oil lamps lit simultaneously at a single location, biggest wheelchair logo, and most people fitted with hearing aids in 8 hours. These records were created at Samajik Adhikarita Shivir and Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fittings of Aids/Appliances (ADIP) Camp in Navsari, a government press release said.

The first record — ‘highest number of oil lamps lit simultaneously at a single location’ — was set on the eve of the mega camp. An incredible 989 people with disabilities came together to set an all-new record, almost doubling the minimum of 500 participants they needed in order to achieve the title. The challenge for each person was to light the lamp exactly at the same time after a given signal within 30 seconds. The second record — ‘biggest wheelchair logo’ — was also broken on the same day, when 1,000 participants in wheelchairs depicted a message saying ‘Happy Birthday PM’ in the tri-colour. It bettered the previous record of 346 participants that was achieved by Hope Inc. in Moorhead, Minnesota, USA.

The third world record — ‘most people fitted with hearing aids in 8 hours — single location’ — was also set, when free assistive device kits were handed out 600 persons with disabilities. These kits were further distributed to thousands of persons with disability throughout the weekend. The ADIP camp was conducted by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities [Divyangjan], Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and organised by Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO).Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present at the occasion as chief guest. Expressing his pleasure, he tweeted, “Navsari has set three records and made a mark for itself on the map of the world. Congratulations.”

In the 159th Mega ADIP Camp, the biggest so far, 11330 people with disabilities were benefited. The camp, which is held under the ADIP Scheme of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is in force since 1981. This has been revised and further adopted from April 1, 2014.

INSPIRATION:When a Navy Aircraft Turned into an Air Ambulance and Saved an Auto Driver’s Life

A remarkable show of coordination between hospital staff, policemen and the Indian Navy saved an auto driver’s life by a successful heart transplant operation. The heart was carried from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi in record time and it was the first time a defence aircraft was used for such a purpose. For the first time, on Friday, a defence aircraft was used as an ambulance to conduct a rare rescue operation which revolved around carrying a heart from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi. This rescue operation was carried out to save an auto driver’s life.

When 46-year-old Neelakanda Sharma was declared brain dead at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram, his family decided that they would donate Neelakanda’s heart. After operating on him for about five hours, a group of brilliant doctors were able to safely garner his heart at 6:10 pm.Struggling for his life in Lissie Hospital, Kochi, 47-year-old Mathew Achadan was chosen to be the recipient of this heart. However, the heart had to be transported in less than four hours, which would not haven been possible even on using the green corridor. It was then decided that the heart would be transferred by a defence aircraft and was carried to the IAF base in 18 minutes owing to the dedicated work of the police, hospital authorities and the Indian Navy. The heart was then carried on a Dornier, which took off immediately at 6:48 pm and landed at the naval base in Kochi remarkably at 7:29 pm.

At 7:34 pm, the ambulance took off with the heart to reach the hospital. Kochi’s traffic saw an awe-inspiring coordination with the ambulance as 200 brilliant policemen worked relentlessly to ensure that the ambulance faced no deterrence. The ambulance reached Lissie Hospital, which was 10 km away from the airport, in 8 minutes and 32 seconds flat. The operation on Mathew Achadan began at 8 pm.When the Ernakulam district collector called the Navy PRO for a chopper, the authorities said they would provide a Dornier instead, because the time period would then be cut down by 55 minutes. A Dornier was capable of reaching in just 35 minutes.

“The ischemic timing of a heart is four to five hours and a heart that has been removed should start beating in a new destination within that period or else we may not get the desired result. Luckily we were able to finish the removal in Thiruvananthapuram by 6.10pm and start transplanting by 8pm”

– Dr Joe Joseph, cardiologist at Lisie Heart Institute who was part of the operation, said to The Times of India.Headed by Dr. Jose Chacko Periyappuram, TBI salutes the team of doctors who conducted this transplant operation and the coordination of the policemen, the Indian Navy and the other hospital staff who made the operation successful as much as the doctors did.

Multifacted Dusi Dharmarao has documented the cultural history of North Andhra and also improved access to education in the region.Good writing, they say, reveals feeling, refines events, locates importance and intensifies the experience of living. Writings of Dursi Dharmarao - a prolific writer, essayist, lyricist, poet and social worker - belong to that rare category. This septuagenarian has been a tireless chronicler of the cultural history of North Coastal Andhra and that of Srikakulam district in particular, for over half a century.A retired lecturer in Telugu, for him life is about making an impact not making income. Born and brought up in Dusi, a dinky village known for the presence of erudite Vedic scholars in Srikakulam district, his tryst with letters took place quite early in life. His musical and cadenced expression is no different. His grandfather Dusi Jagannatham had conceived and formulated ‘Turupu Bhagavatham’ that evolved into a distinct rural art form in its own right. Thorough exposure to its live performances and its varied and cadenced articulations ( daruvulu ) of different characters infused in him a flair for musical expression. It led him to learn and gain mastery over art of playing the harmonium. It helped him make a foray into theatre and compose music for a good number of theatrical performances and dance ballets. He is an approved lyricist for AIR and Doordarshan. Imbued with a poetic turn of the phrase, his lyrics unveil bucolic charms of north coastal Andhra in its romantic shades.Dusi Dhramrao has more than a dozen and half publications to his credit on diverse cultural facets of north coastal Andhra. His Rasa Tarangini, a huge compilation of essays on a wide range of folk art forms as well as literary and musical aspects of this region, is a commendable work. An authority on the history and culture of Srikakulam district, his enduring works ‘ Srikakulam: A story on stone’, ‘History and Culture of Kalinga Andhra’, ‘History and Culture of Srikakulam District’ make an interesting reading. A globetrotter, his travelogues are no different. Folk arts of Uttarandhra, he says, need to be protected and preserved for posterity as they form rich and colourful strands in the cultural tapestry of Andhra PradeshAs the convener of Srikakulam chapter of Indian National Trust for Art Cultural Heritage (INTACH) New Delhi, he was instrumental in restoration of Upanishmandiram – a library of ancient works in Srikakulam.

Working in rural areas made Dhramarao conscious of the lack of access to education among villagers. When he found an elementary school at a small village Matham Sariapalli which catered to 34 surrounding villages in the 1960s, he resolved to get it upgraded to high school and collected the required fund from village folks, even knocking on almost every door in the villages. This, he did with a Petromax light during nights along with a few like-minded villagers who are otherwise busy in agricultural activities during the day. This indefatigable worker refuses to hang his shoes even at this age and is now actively doing his Ph.D in Telugu literature on the classical poets of north coastal Andhra.Folk arts of Uttarandhra, he says, need to be protected and preserved for posterity as they form rich and colourful strands in the cultural tapestry of Andhra Pradesh.

A radio biography of veteran music composer M S Viswanathan was released in audio CD format by Prasar Bharti Archives on Wednesday, along with archival recordings of other notable yesteryear doyens veena maestro Emani Sankara Sastry , Carnatic vocalist Tanjore S Kalyanaraman, and orator Thenkachi Ko Swaminathan, who also served as assistant station director in All India Radio.

While recordings of M S Viswanathan, Emani Sankara Sastry and Tanjore Kalyanaraman were released as a set of three CDs, `Indru oru Thagaval' Thenkachi Swaminathan's 200 recordings of over 4 minutes each were released in two parts. Film producer AVM Saravanan fondly remembered Swaminathan's humour-laced messages, commentary and punch lines from his celebrated 5-minute show on AIR, `Indru oru Thagaval', which ran every morning for almost 14 years. “I would listen to him every mor ning on way to my grandson's school and later during the day translate it for him in English. It was almost as though I heard the show twice,“ he said. M S Viswanathan's daughter Madhu Ashok, who recei ved his CD, recollected how AIR acted as the bridge between her and her father when he was travelling and kept her abreast of all his work. Bhushany Kalyanaraman, who was both S Kalyanaraman's wife and disciple, fondly remembered how he diligently strove to pass on his knowledge to the future generation and thanked him for creating an artist out of her. Emani Sankara Sastry's granddaughter Emani Keeravani received the CD of his recordings. The CDs were released by E Gayatri, vice chancellor, Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University . Chief guest Suresh Chandra Panda, IAS member (personnel), Prasar Bharti, lauded the agency's efforts to digitise decades worth of archives concisely and promised to bring to the fore many more works.
