Memories of Malgudi

"It happened to us... I don' t think it can h a p p e n again," muses Ramesh Bhat, somewhat cryptically, as he is pulled back three decades into memories. The actor and associate director of the 1980s television series Malgudi Days, which acquired a cult following and still evokes sighs from the generation that grew up in those years, counts the series among his best work. "If I look back at my body of work and pick a project that was creatively satisfying, it is Malgudi Days," says Bhat of the series that marks its 30-year anniversary this year. "What really worked was our theatre background and the fact we all worked for the love of art," he says. The series, directed by the late Shankar Nag, comprised three seasons of 13 episodes each. Today, the work is vividly remembered as much for R K Narayan's simple yet seductive storylines as for the consummate performances of the actors and the work of the director, all of whom had a strong background in theatre. Among the cast were stalwarts Anant Nag, Girish Karnad, Suhasini Adarkar, B Jayashree, the late Vishnuvardhan and the late Vaishali Kasaravalli.

It all started when producer T S Narasimhan happened to read his son's college textbook, which was R K Narayan's 1952 novel, The Financial Expert. "My father was so taken by the plot that he went and in traduced himself to Narayan, who wasn't keen to talk to anyone from the film field," says T N Badrinath, son of Narasimhan, who died in 2013. The film adaptation of his 1958 novel, The Guide, directed by Dev Anand in 1965, had left Narayan bitter about his novels being adapted to the screen. "But my dad's brother knew Narayan very well, and that worked in our favour," says Badrinath. That meeting led to The Financial Expert being turned into the 1983 Kannada film, Banker Margayya."After Narayan saw the movie, he told my father, `I trust you'. A couple of years later Doordarshan approached Narayan to adapt his stories to TV, he told them only my father could do justice to it," recalls Badrinath. The shooting of Malgudi Days got underway in 1985, largely in picturesque Agumbe in Thirthahalli taluk, Shivamogga, which director Shankar Nag fell in love with after watching one sunset in Agumbe. Although some episodes were shot in Bengaluru and Devarayanadurga, the quaint village of Agumbe essentially became the fictional town of Malgudi. Actors and technicians who worked on the series say the people of Agumbe opened up their homes and hearts to the crew.

"There were no hotels in Agumbe back then, and the 100 odd actors and crew were lodged in houses in the village. Almost every house hosted one of the team. People's front yards were our bedrooms and the river was our shower. There was an old house and an inspection bungalow where a few people stayed," recalls Malnad Jagadish, the production controller. Badrinath adds that every member of the Malgudi family is still welcomed warmly by the people of Agumbe.
Director's cut
An actor-director who made the successful transition from theatre to cinema, Shankar Nag, who died in a road accident 26 years ago, was a man ahead of his times but, while they loved his vision, the crew remembers him as a demanding director. "We worked insane hours. People on the sets would often crib and say, `It should be named Malgudi Nights," Badrinath recalls, laughing. Manjunath Nayaker, the Swaminathan of Swami and Friends, believes Nag worked to ensure personal development of each individual on the sets. "I was a pukka Kannada boy. I knew no English or Hindi. I had no clue who R K Narayan or R K Laxman were. I auditioned and got the part. He taught us how to work in a group," says Manjunath. "We were all treated like adults. There was no question of junior-senior. For him, everyone was equal and people management was one of the biggest les sons I learnt from him." There was a softer side to the cricket-loving director. "I was shooting nonstop during Swami and Friends, while the other boys were playing. I broke down one day and said I didn't want to act. He just walked up and hugged me and announced "pack up" in the middle of a shoot. He bundled all the kids into a Matador van took us to Malpe beach. It was fun and that was the last I ever cribbed on the sets," says Manjunath.
And most of the crew says it was Nag's vision that kept them all going, and has ensured that the series endures. "Shankar put life into Malgudi. Be it the people in the background or the beauty of the surroundings, he knew how to capture it and in the process brought out the best in his actors and crew," says Bhat. "He wove together various aspects to recreate the charm of village life in the pre-independence era."
Behind the scenes...
H andling production was rough for the unit as they had to work out the logistics in a village 400km from Bengaluru. There were no cell phones in the 1980s, landlines were few and far away, and roads were terrible. "At times, it appeared we had to move heaven and earth to get a scene together. I've taken donkeys from Shivamogga and elephants from Bengaluru as props for the scenes," says Jagadish. Nag's wife, Arundathi Nag, who was dialogue writer, assistant editor and costume designer, brought a lot of props from her house. Austin and Hindustan cars were borrowed from friends, while trucks used to transport silk in Bengaluru and Ramanagara were used as period vehicles. Crowds were lured from nearby villages with the promise of lunch and bus fare. The crew even went in search of a household which had a newborn to play Swami's baby brother (in Swami And Friends).

No starry airs
Among the star line-up were R K Narayan's brother R K Laxman, who drew the charming black-and-white sketches for the television adaptation. The lilting opening tune and soulful background score was composed by acclaimed Carnatic musician L Vaidyanathan. Many of these stalwarts are no more--from Shankar Nag to Narasimhan and Vishnuvardhan to Vaidyanathan, but the crew remembers them all fondly. Badrinath says that Kannada superstar Vishnuvardhan volunteered to act in the series but his father said no as he could not afford him and didn't want someone to work for free. To which the superstar replied, `Don't worry about that. I just want to act.' It was Vishnuvardhan's first TV appearance, and he played the lead role in an episode titled Rupees 45 A Month. "We had stars from Bengaluru and Mumbai, but they were all so simple and had a no-nonsense approach on the sets," says Badrinath.

Revisiting ‘Magic Lamp’: Allu, Phullu, Sloppy and Doordarshan’s enchanted Indian childhood

Puppets, performances, and an octopus for a postman: director Shukla Das reveals the efforts that went into the highly poplar television show. Indian children are spoilt for choice on television. Over 19 channels from around the world cater to this demographic. This wasn’t the case in the 1970s, when television meant only one channel: the state-run Doordarshan. A handful of shows existed for young viewers, and the most popular one, Magic Lamp, was helmed by Shukla Das. Das had made a dozen-odd short films for the WGTV television network in Georgia in the United States of America, which made her the ideal candidate to capture the imagination of the Indian child for Doordarshan. Within a few months after her appointment in 1971, Das directed such acclaimed series as Young World, Rich Heritage and Spotlight for young audiences. In 1974, the director of the Mumbai television station, VS Shastri, asked Das to take charge of a flagging children’s show called Magic Lamp and turn it around.

The programme included a puppet and a compere and invited school children to display their talents on air. Shukla was American in her sensibilities, yet Indian at heart. She dismissed the format as “a silly playground for performing monkeys” and envisaged a show that could “successfully create a world for the Indian child”. Within four months, Das revamped Magic Lamp, introducing new puppets, storylines and animated vignettes. Magic Lamp also gave rise to over 3,000 children-only clubs in Mumbai. Das ran the series for five years, and after her exit, the show went off air. Das went on to become the Senior Vice President Programming for the Star and Sony channels and an award-winning documentary filmmaker, but Magic Lamp remains closest to her heart. In an interview with Scroll.in, 70 year-old Das shares her memories of Magic Lamp and does not mince words about the failure on Doordarshan’s part to sustain her vision. ‘Magic Lamp’ had an edge over other shows that were aired on Doordarshan, in the sense that they didn’t pander to young audiences. I hate those shows where the compere goes “Bachcheee!” or “Childrennn!” in a fake, singsong manner. The other shows that appeared on Doordarshan in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi did exactly that. But all the children on my show had names and their individualities were highly respected.
How did you conceptualise the show? It has often been compared to ‘Sesame Street’, right?
Yes, Sesame Street did inspire the look of the Magic Lamp puppets. Allu, Magic Lamp’s protagonist, was modelled on Sesame Street’s Ernie. But the rest was completely original. We didn’t teach children letters, numbers and other basic stuff. And we catered mainly to English-speaking urban children. Our show had two puppet characters in the beginning – Allu and Phullu. Allu represented the child, a dreamer, very bumptious, and eager to learn while ready to make mistakes. Phullu was his female counterpart. We gave both different star signs and corresponding personalities: Phullu was wiser but got very distressed when things went awry. Both characters lived in an apple house. This segment was all about conceptual learning. But it was inadequate to limit their interactions to the home, and so we brought in a new segment called Sing Along. We had a 15 year-old girl called Barbara tune the songs, and children would sing them.

Then there was Halla Gulla Path Shala, to improve motor and cognitive skills. Here, either Allu or his sidekick Champakali taught science and do-it-yourself tricks to children or adults. In 1977, we introduced Star Quiz, in which three puppets were the stars and there were parent-child teams as participants. The child’s question were asked to the parent, while the parent’s to the child. And the child ended up winning every time. You also ran the Panna clubs for children across Mumbai. We had over 3,000 children-only clubs all over Mumbai, and mind you, none of them were school-based. We created a separate show that was run by a frog puppet we imported from Russia called Panna, and he hosted an activity every second month and invited these clubs to participate. We’ve had some purely altruistic events like Sell Cards for the Blind and Raise Money for the Specially Abled, and some that simply engaged the child, like the athletic meets. This was our coup at instilling team spirit and integrating the child with the world outside.

Who were your helping hands in executing such an ambitious project?
We got a magnate like Ronnie Screwvala on board. Of course, back then, he was Dr Ronnie, a character on our show. He also voiced and operated a monster puppet, which represented the child’s fears. My main asset was Mohini Vasvani, the show’s scriptwriter. She was excellent. We’d have the scripts ready by Saturday, call the children for rehearsals, and record by Sunday morning. Our main constraint was that none of us was formally trained in rod puppetry, and with the Rs 3,000 budget limit per episode, we couldn’t have prototypes of our puppets that could be remodelled according to the scenario, unlike Sesame Street. Everyone was self-taught, and so the execution wasn’t as polished as we would’ve wanted it to be. Our short animation sequence titled Monu the Menace was basic cell animation. But kids loved it all because they deeply identified with our characters. Your show went the extra mile in establishing a connection with children. Of course. I recalled this incident when we received this heart-warming letter from one of the clubs that had suddenly become dormant. The president of the club had passed away and had told the vice-president before her death that the club must continue. But the girl was having troubles in bringing the club together, so some of our parent-helpers visited them and counselled the team. Children would visit the set at 1am in the morning just to celebrate the characters’ birthdays! And of course, the letters – 3,000 a week! Thankfully some parents volunteered to read them all. We created an eight-foot muppet called Sloppy the Octopus just to deliver some of these letters on the show and have them read out.

TRAI proposes common interconnection framework for broadcasters

India's telecom regulator proposed a common interconnection point for all addressable systems like Direct to Home (DTH), Head-end In the Sky (HITS), Digital Addressable Cable TV Systems (DAS) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Aiming to make broadcasting industry a more level playing field, India’s telecom regulator proposed a common interconnection framework for all addressable systems. ”The interconnection regulations ought to evolve to keep pace with new developments in the sector, while sustaining the fundamental underlying principles of non-discrimination and level playing field. ”Keeping this in view, the Authority considered it fit to review the regulatory framework, for all type of addressable systems in a complete and holistic manner,” said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in a consultation paper it issued. Written comments have been invited, by October 28, on The Draft Telecommunication (Broadcasting and Cable Services) Interconnection (Addressable Systems) Regulations, 2016. In the paper, TRAI has suggested a common interconnection framework for all addressable systems like Direct to Home (DTH), Head-end In the Sky (HITS), Digital Addressable Cable TV Systems (DAS) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).

“The Authority is of the view that any kind of exclusivity in distribution of TV channel is pre-judicial for competition and hence is not permitted. ”No carriage fee is to be paid by a broadcaster if the subscription of the channel is more than or equal to 20 percent of the subscriber base. The rate of carriage fee has been capped at 20 paisa per channel per subscriber per month. Further, the carriage fee amount will decrease with increase in subscription,” it said in the paper. “The distributors of TV channels may offer discounts on the carriage fee rate declared by them not exceeding 35 percent of the rate of the carriage fee declared,” it added. ”Broadcaster to offer to a distributor, a minimum of 20 percent of the maximum retail price of its pay channel(s) or bouquet(s) of pay channels as distribution fee. They may also offer discounts on the maximum retail price provided that the sum of discounts and distribution fee in no case shall exceed 35 percent of the maximum retail price, so declared,” it suggested.

Why do we look for monies in public service content & its dissemination? - Mukesh Sharma

It was the year 1947 when India had got freedom from the British rule. Everyone wanted to contribute in Nation building. Cinema and moving images in India were still in the nascent stage. Except for All India Radio which started Broadcast sometime in the mid-twenties, there was no other official channel to bring to people the development schemes of the govt. in order to inform & educate them. So an urgent need to set up a Film /TV body arose in order to help in Nation Building.
Thus in the year 1948 Films Division of India came into being to channelize the energy of a just born Nation. For nearly seven decades Films Division has without break been continuously striving to keep a record of the social, political & cultural fabric and realities of the country by way of Moving Images called Documentary Films. Today the Archive of Films Division boasts of more than 8000 titles on Documentaries, Short and Animation films.

The outreach of Films produced by Films Division is through TV, theater, educational institutions and social organizations. Films are also offered on sale to lovers of documentary cinema, public, private institutions and foreign buyers at a very nominal cost.

National Museum of Indian Cinema

The Museum of Moving Images built at the cost of Rs 150 crore, will be one of its kind, in the entire South Asia region, once it is opened. The digital and virtual technology with holographic techniques is blended well to give life and movement to the museum.

The Museum takes the visitors through an absorbing journey, of a century of Indian Cinema in a story telling mode with the help of visuals, graphics, film clippings, publicity material, artifacts, interactive exhibits and multimedia among other things. Here one can enjoy the fascinating History of Indian cinema. The exposition is divided into 9 sections viz. The origin of Cinema, Cinema comes to India, Indian silent films, the advent of sound, the studio era, the impact of WW II & creative resonance, new wave & beyond and regional cinema.

Doordarshan.

Doordarshan had a modest beginning with an experimental telecast starting in Delhi on 15 September 1959, with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio.
Doordarshan began a five-minute news bulletin in 1965. Pratima Puri was the first newsreader.
The television service was extended to Bombay (now Mumbai) and Amritsar in 1972 to fill in the entertainment Quotient. Up until 1975, only seven Indian cities had a television service and Doordarshan remained the sole provider of television in India. Television services were separated from radio on 1 April 1976. Finally, in 1982, Doordarshan as a National Broadcaster came into existence.
And then there was no looking back. Kendra's & TV towers adorn the skyline of major capital stations, of various states in the country. By the end of late eighties Doordarshan’s monopoly was complete. Now more than 90 percent of the Indian population can receive Doordarshan (DD National) programs through a network of more than 1416 terrestrial transmitters. There are about 67 Doordarshan studios producing TV programs today.

Role of Films Division & Doordarshan

Are DD and FD relevant in the present scenario when the media landscape has completely changed?
The answer is an emphatic yes! Yes, there is need for both the organization to exist and continue to cater to the public service mandate for which they were born. In fact, the need is more today. With relentless onslaught of Commercial broadcasting from over 900 plus channels were the hunger is TRPs, bottom lines and eye balls the quality of content production has gone for a toss. In absence of any broadcast laws it’s a “free for all”. The Indian Broadcasting Forum (IBF), which is the supreme body of broadcasters believes in self-censorship which is hardly implemented by any commercial channel, as they are answerable to its shareholders to ensure profits.
To Inform, Educate & Entertain The goal of public service broadcasting is to make needed information available at the doorsteps of every viewer. It should be wide ranging in its appeal, reliable, entertaining, instructive and informative serving only one master i.e. the public. It strives to engage all communities through thought provoking broadcast programs and outreach projects. It channelizes the information and ideas that improve communities socially, culturally and economically. The goal of public service broadcasting is to meet community’s needs which exist beyond traditional, geographic and institutional boundaries. Public service broadcasting, through All India Radio and Doordarshan networks, provides maximum coverage of the population and one of the largest terrestrial networks in the world. In a country like India where illiteracy rate is high, this medium has a great potential to inform, to educate and to entertain the people. The immense social responsibility of public service broadcasting is consonant with the potentiality of the network as it reaches vast masses of the people through the country. Over the years, AIR, Doordarshan and Films Division true to their role as public broadcasters, have been engaged in multi-faceted activities. With the move into digital age public service broadcasting is in the forefront of using new technology to provide better service and programs to an even wider and more diverse community.

But then the central question, how are Public Service channels worldwide, surviving? What business model do they follow?

The answer is, secure funding. Unless and until the monies are earmarked for Public Service broadcasting either from the people, or the parliament, or through a dedicated budget from the Government of the day, Public Service Broadcasting will not survive. BBC (UK), Deutsche Welle TV (Germany), NHK (Japan) are some of the pub casters who are surviving on public funding. Death of PSB would mean death of democracy.
Similarly, AIR, DD & FD will need Government support in order to continue to serve people. Good documentaries, education features, health programs, socially relevant content needs hand-holding. When a nation invests in health, education and social sector for its people, it does not expect to make profits out of such commitments. Then why look for monies in Public Service Content and its dissemination?

Few Tips for placement of router to get WiFi signals

$

How to Get a Stronger WiFi Signal without upgrading your internet connection

Location, location, location—that adage definitely applies when it comes to coaxing stronger WiFi from your router. In fact, all those things that make your home, well, a house—doors, walls, windows—are impediments for WiFi signals. Here are a few router placement tips to keep those signals moving along.

Higher is better. If you live in a two-story house, placing the router on the second floor promotes wider reach. The device’s antennas work something like an umbrella: The higher you put them, the more coverage you get below them. Just remember that floors slow signals down. So you may not want to put the router in the attic—especially if you want strong WiFi in the basement.

Seize the middle ground. Doors and walls are trouble, too. That means the closer the router is to the center of your home, the better off you’ll be. Does that mean you have to install it in the guest bathroom? No, but if you can find a spot close by, you may improve the signal elsewhere in the house. If that requires moving wires, your service provider might be able to help. Likewise, if the router sits in a room with a closed door, open it. That’s one less barrier to slow down the signal.

Shift the receiver. It’s just as important to think about the placement of the devices receiving the WiFi signal. For starters, don’t put the Apple TVin a cabinet behind closed doors. It might even help to move the device just a few inches back, forward, or to the side.

Remember the rabbit ears. You might find as many as eight antennas on some routers. They’re not there just to make the device look impressive. They really can make a difference. On 802.11ac routers, for example, they can actually segregate signals, pulling those from a device streaming video to one antenna and those from a device used for Web browsing to another.

Because WiFi signals bounce all over the house, you have to fiddle with the positioning one antenna at a time. Think of the old-school, rabbit-ear TV antenna technique. If shifting the first antenna doesn’t improve the WiFi, move on to the second, then the third…And, just because you don’t see antennas on your router doesn’t mean they’re not there. They may well be inside the device. To redirect them, simply rotate the router or change the orientation (from horizontal to vertical or vice versa).

Pop your corn before the movie. If you’ve got an older, 802.11n router, devices you wouldn’t expect can interfere with the WiFi signal in your home. That includes baby monitors, old cordless phones, anything running Bluetooth, even your microwave. So if you’re planning to stream a movie, finish popping the Orville Redenbacher before you turn on the Netflix.

आज भी उसे याद करते हुए वे उसे अपना "Most loving baby at that time"मानते हैं ।

Anti tobacco education activities of mass media in India

Panda will replace Jawhar Sircar who resigned on 3 October, four months before his scheduled retirement in February 2017.Panda’s appointment comes at a time when the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is focused on auctioning the prime time programming slots of Doordarshan to the private production houses.New Delhi: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati on Monday named Suresh Chandra Panda, member (personnel) as the interim chief executive officer at its 137th board meeting.Panda will replace Jawhar Sircar who resigned on 3 October, four months before his scheduled retirement in February 2017. Prasar Bharati runs Doordarshan and All India Radio.

“Being the senior-most member of Prasar Bharati, S.C. Panda will take charge as the acting CEO from 4 November,” a senior Prasar Bharati official present at the meeting said. Sircar’s resignation was accepted by the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry on 16 October. To be sure, Panda’s appointment will be short as his retirement is due in February 2017. “He will take charge for three months. By then, the government will be able to complete the selection process and appoint a new CEO,” the official said.

Panda, a 1981 batch Indian Administrative Officer from Assam-Meghalaya cadre has been serving Prasar Bharati since March 2015 as member (personnel). Prior to that, he was special secretary and financial adviser at the ministry of home affairs.Panda’s appointment comes at a time when the public broadcaster is focused on auctioning the prime time programming slots of Doordarshan to the private production houses. At the board meeting on Monday, the Prasar Bharati board gave Doordarshan an ultimatum to start the auction process by 1 November before the retirement of Sircar. “The new programming will roll out later but the broadcaster will wind up the auction process by the end of December. Till then, Doordarshan will continue to purchase programmes,” the official said.

In May, Prasar Bharati board decided to put up the 7-11pm slots on all weekdays on auction, while keeping the7-8pm slot on Saturdays for its own content. Prior to that Doordarshan was purchasing programmes from private producers and generating advertising revenues. So far, Doordarshan has conducted two application rounds for the auction—neither of which concluded as the applicants were not found eligible to participate in the auction.

According to the slot policy of the broadcaster, a production house is eligible to bid if it has logged a revenue of at least Rs3 crore per annum in each of the past three financial years and has produced at least 200 hours of general entertainment programming, including feature films in the last three calendar years, among other conditions.

Inspiration- Deepika's foundation Live Love Laugh, which will deal with the issue of mental illness

People think depression is sadness or constant crying. Yes, it is! But sometimes depression also manifests as anger and frustration. Sometimes it is a feeling of constantly being numb. Depression is waking up in the morning and going back to bed again because the day ahead seems empty and meaningless. Why would someone who has everything be unhappy? – the question that was on everybody’s mind when Deepika Padukone revealed that she had suffered from about of depression during an interview with Barkha Dutt last year. A young popular actor with a string of blockbuster movies living a life of luxury seemed an antithesis of what a depressed person should be. So the article written by Deepika about her experience and her television interview was met with disbelief from some quarters and even accusations of her resorting to promotional gimmicks for a movie.

But Deepika was committed to this cause and founded the Bengaluru-based Live, love, Laugh Foundation on October 10 (World Mental Health day) 2015, with her counsellor Anna Chandy and her psychiatrist Dr Shyam Bhat along with Anirban Das and Nina Nair on board as trustees.Deepika told YourStory, “The Foundation and the cause we are championing are deeply personal to me. When we set up the Foundation, our intention was to reduce the stigma, spread awareness and change the way we look at Mental Health. I am happy to have made, what I believe is, some early but significant interventions. The setting up of our website with important mental health information, the awareness programmes we have launched for schools, and the sensitisation programme for general physicians are some of the key initiatives that we’ve undertaken over the past several months.”

Anna adds, “There is still a huge stigma attached to mental illness and people desperately hide a family member’s depression or bipolar disorder under a shroud of secrecy. We need to be able to normalise and speak about this topic in our living rooms, the way we would about physical illnesses like viral fever or diabetes.”
Why the urgency?
According to the World Health Organisation, India is the most depressed country in the world, with one in 10 Indians said to be depressed, the statistics point to an impending epidemic. We also have the highest suicide rate with over one lakh Indians on an average committing suicide every year. Today, 50 percent of India’s population is below the age of 25, and it has been estimated that by the year 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years, one of the youngest in the world, making the country especially vulnerable.
Deepika agrees, “Mental Health has assumed the scale of an epidemic and we truly need to work together to bring psychiatric disorders out of the shadows and into the light. We are seeing several individuals and organisations step forward to support our efforts. There is so much to do and so many more people who need help to cope with their challenges. We look forward to working together in the mission to make Mental Health a national priority!”
“It was very brave of Deepika to come out and speak about something so intensely personal. There were days when she would cry in her vanity van during shoot breaks. She did not want to step out of her home, but was dedicated to keeping up with her work and social commitments. An early intervention helped her recover fast. She wants to ensure that by talking about her struggles and through work done by the foundation, she can reach out to people in similar situations,” shares Anna.
How can the Live Love Laugh Foundation help?

Earlier this year, the Foundation had also launched a campaign called You Are Not Alone, which is focussed on educating high school students and teachers on stress, anxiety, and depression. Adolescents are a high-risk segment and teachers can play a pivotal role in assessing whether a student needs help. The Foundation plans to cover more than 500 schools around the country this year and will include separate sessions for students and teachers.....
