Mumbai campus buzz: Students come up with model to bridge education gap

According to the Quikvitt team, the project involves only an initial cost for buying the OTG which does not require monthly subscription and can be plugged into a mobile phone.ACCESS TO Education remains a major challenge for children from the economically weaker sections of society even in urban areas. To bridge this gap, students of MET Institute of Management (IOM), Bandra, have proposed a feasible model that uses easily available and inexpensive technology.During a competition organised by the Mumbai University, Team Quikvitt from MET had proposed to use Doordarshan’s On-The-Go (OTG) device to bring ‘education to the doorstep’ of the urban poor. Their project on the theme ‘Upliftment of the Urban Poor’ won the Mumbai University New Initiative for Joint Action Now (MUNIJAN) competition.According to the Quikvitt team, the project involves only an initial cost for buying the OTG which does not require monthly subscription and can be plugged into a mobile phone.

Akash Soni, a Quikvitt team member and a first-year student of MET IOM, said, “Today, most households, even those from EWS, own mobile phones. The idea is to provide them with OTG and collaborate with Doordarshan to have a dedicated educational channel.”The idea was hailed by judges and the students managed to find investors to start the project.“We now plan to start our own enterprise to take this project forward,” said Karan Shukla and Sayali Prabhu, team members.Nine teams were shortlisted for the competition, aimed at encouraging students to work on projects that help society. MUNIJAN was coordinated by the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) which received several applications from management colleges of the university. Other participants included teams from Welingkar Institute of Management, JBIMS and Sydenham Institute of Management, Research and Entrepreneurship Education.

A team from JBIMS suggested a food-service chain where slum dwellers would be trained in cooking, cleaning and delivering food at homes. “The ‘dabbas’ priced at Rs 30 and Rs 40 would provide a sustainable lifestyle. We had proposed a financial model taking into consideration inflation and losses,” said Ajit Singh, a second year student of JBIMS.“The objective of this initiative is to bring positive changes to society by involving students in a series of constructive and socially responsible activities,” said Chandrahauns Chavan, Director of JBIMS and the chief coordinator of MUNIJAN.He said the initiative, which started with participation of management colleges of Mumbai University, has now been extended to all universities in Maharashtra.

Madurai AIR’s documentary bags Akashvani Award

“God controls the earth from the sky. Air traffic controllers control the sky from earth.” Thus begins a 20-minute documentary of Madurai station of All India Radio on a section of unsung heroes of the country.Naanga Kelambura Neram Vanthachchu (It’s time for us to take off) virtually places the listener inside an air traffic control tower to understand how air traffic controllers orchestrate a symphony of big birds in the sky. It has won Akashvani Award 2015 in Radio Documentary category, the only award for Tamil Nadu this year.

“The idea to do a programme on air traffic control came to me when I was observing the sky, with criss-crossing aeroplanes, near Qutub Minar in Delhi last year. When I approached Madurai airport officials with a proposal, they immediately agreed to cooperate with me. In fact, the script for the documentary was written by Deepak Senthil, Air Traffic Controller,” says Savitraa Rajaram, Programme Executive, producer of the documentary.

The AIR team, comprising Mr. Rajaram, S. Karthigai Deeban, Transmission Executive, and R. Narayanasamy, Engineering Assistant, spent almost a day at the control tower of Madurai airport to capture ‘live’ sounds. “It was a new experience for the AIR. The sounds of landing, taxiing and take-off of aeroplanes have been well captured by the team so that the listener gets a real feeling of being in an airport,” says M. Ashok, Assistant Director and Programme Head.

Interspersed with original music and commentary, the documentary captures the nuances of air traffic control in great detail and makes the listener appreciate the stamp of clinical precision in the work of air traffic controllers. The bigger challenge for the AIR team was to translate a multi-sensory feeling into an aural format. “We spent more time on editing, especially in the compilation of effects,” says Mr. Rajaram.

Inspiration-This IAS Officer Carried Heavy Sacks to Prevent a Dam from Collapsing and Drowning a Village

A Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), who thought on his feet and acted quickly, was able to save hundreds of villagers from drowning in the Balia district of UP.Over 2 million people from over 1,000 villages in Bihar have been affected by devastating floods this monsoon season, forcing 1.7 lakh people to take shelter in 179 relief camps set up in various affected areas. The Ganga and Ghagra rivers in the central Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand regions have also breached the danger mark.Recently, a small village called Bairiya in Balia district was alerted that it was in danger of being flooded. However, a ring dam built on the Ganga in Dubeychapara district, although over 60 years old, had been protecting Bairiya and about a dozen other surrounding villages from this calamity.

Repairs to the dam were ongoing because the force of the water was building up, but the structure itself was expected to hold up.On August 26, SDM Arvind Kumar of Balia received a call from one of his officials that the villagers in the area had abandoned repairs and were running away from the work site because the dam was about to collapse.Arvind Kumar quickly got into his car and drove to Bairiya, getting there at 2 am. He had to use a boat to get to the dam’s repair site, where he witnessed panic and confusion firsthand. The first thing he tried to do was to restore some calm by letting people know that he had heard the water level was falling upstream near Allahabad. He then made announcements, asking the villagers to evacuate their homes and climb to higher ground near the national highway.

Arvind Kumar had his staff wake up the local boatmen to help rescue the people. He paid the boatmen from his own pocket to get diesel and other essentials needed for the purpose. While arranging for help, Kumar noticed several geo-bags lying at a construction site near the dam. Geo bags are synthetic bags made from polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene and are used to protect hydraulic structures and riverbanks from severe erosion and scouring. All Arvind Kumar realized he needed now was manpower to place these bags on the dam in such a way as to prevent water from entering the village. When he found no one around him willing to come forward to help, he started to lift the bags himself and place them where needed.

Watching him do this, some workers started to come forward. Elderly people from the village also started helping. Slowly, about 100-150 people made a human chain to pass the bags to each other and, within an hour, there were around 400 people trying to save the 3.5 km long dam.“The elderly people started helping me first. I could see the fire in their eyes. They would do anything to save their houses. Someone asked me to stop as there were 400 people working there already. But I was no longer just the SDM of the village. I felt like one of the villagers trying to save his home,” said Kumar.Once the situation looked under control, Arvind Kumar called the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team at Navranga, 8 kms from Bairiya. The team responded quickly and took over the rescue effort of evacuating villagers. However, many of the able-bodied villagers continued to work at the dam repair site, keeping the structure intact for another 36 hours before it finally collapsed due to the damage that had taken place on the other side.

However, thanks to the efforts of the SDM and the locals, everyone had been evacuated safely by then. The villagers, on their part, are thankful to have an SDM who is so concerned about their welfare.

G. Swaminathan on the recitals showcased as part of the Chennai edition of Sangeet Sammelan concerts held recently. The 2016 edition of Akashvani Sangeeth Sammelan of Prasar Bharati held recently at AIR’s multi-track auditorium in Chennai, featured the two major streams of classical music - Hindustani and Carnatic with a laya vinyasa interlude. The programme was inaugurated by violin maestro T.N. Krishnan.

Sundri is a double reed wind instrument with a strong semblance to shehnai but smaller in size. The artist was Pt. Suryakant Khaladkar from Pune supported by Sanjay Apar (Aurangabad) on the tabla and Saratkumar Khaladkar and Dinesh Maulikar on Sundri. The major presentation was a detailed portrayal of Maru Behag in vilambit, madyama and dhurit sections through raag and a bandish set to ek taal. The vilambit passage rested on lingering phrases with stress on melody. Though the raag reflected a plaintive mood in the slow pulse, it turned quite vivacious in madyama and dhurit kaal. The swirls and eddies special to wind instruments made their presence at the appropriate junctures to make the raag shine.

The second piece was in Saraswati with a bandish in teen taal. The short prologue and the brisk bandish showed the beauty of Saraswati in a different light exclusive to Hindustani. Pt. Suryakant Khaladekar signed off his recital with a fast and colourful ‘dhun’ in Misra Khamaj. His accompanists participated with dedication while Sanjay Apar’s beats were soft and subtle to suit the moods of the raags.‘Laya Vinyasa’ by thavil exponent K.G. Kalyanasundaram from Tiruchi bristled with energy. The heavy duty instrument created a wonderful package of strong, sharp beats to complement the supple, slight and slow patterns of rhythm keeping the audience fully engrossed for nearly 30 minutes. The laya was in misra chapu to a pallavi in Kalyani played by Kovilur K.G. Somanathan on the nagaswaram who initiated the laya vinyasa. The time keeper was Sembanarkoil Jothi Natarajan.

The finale was a vocal recital by up-and-coming young singer Vishnudev Namboothiri of Thrissur. With an impressive resonant voice, Vishnudev essayed Nattakurinji for Tyagaraja’s ‘Manasu Vishaya.’ The vocalist exploited the unique charm of Nattakurinji with several fascinating phrases in the madyama regions and through comfortable trajectories in the upper registers. His swarakalpana, centred on madyamam, showcased the depth of his imagination and arithmetical acumen.

Vishnudev shared a dynamic Pantuvarali with an alapana linked to ‘Sankari Ninne Ika Jala’ by Mysore Vasudevachar. The exposition and extrapolation on ‘Pankajakshi Neethu Mahima’ with swara sallies were promising. Vishnudev Namboothiri began his concert with Swati Tirunal’s Navarasakannada kriti ‘Vandhe Sada Padmanabham’ and concluded with Lalgudi Jayaraman’s Mohanakalyani thillana.

N. Sampath from Thrissur on the violin matched the vocalist’s vision in ragas and swaras with ingenuity. N.C. Bharadwaj on the mridangam and Udipi S. Srikanth of Thiruvananthapuram on the ganjira added pep to the proceedings with their agile percussion beats. The Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan Concerts broadcast will commence on October 22 . The programmes discussed here will be aired on November 14 (10 p.m.), October 23 (10 p.m.) and October 23 (9.30 p.m.) respectively in Chennai A and FM Gold-National Hook-up.

Around Rs.10 crores is being spent to digitalise the broadcasting studio, including renovating of administrative section, library and auditorium of radio station which suffered huge damage during the floods. Special emphasis is being given to modernise the station armed with modern equipments making it more appealing and beautiful to the people. During the September floods, Radio Kashmir was the only medium of communication between flood affected victims after flood wiped the Doordarshan Kendra in Srinagar.

Radio Kashmir Station survived through the disaster much more than any other radio or Internet service. Former chief minister Omar Abdullah also took the help of the radio station to reach the affected people when all other forms of communication were badly hit. It is prominent for starting of Short Message Service where it gave the affected people to avail rescue services.

Voice that rankles

As the Sangeet Natak Akademi celebrates Bhupinder Singh’s contribution to music, ANUJ KUMAR speaks to the legendary singer and guitarist
In times when most playback singers sound satisfied, the contemplative and funereal voice of Bhupinder Singh’s continues to make a statement. This generation is almost bereft of songs that capture the weariness of soul, the incompleteness of life — voices that convey the pain within. Singh’s voice falls like the proverbial axe on the frozen ice. Do we have an equivalent of “Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wahi Fursat Ke Raat Din”? Perhaps, this generation doesn’t aspire to have that fursat, and that’s why such situations and songs do not figure in films any more, says Singh, who has been conferred the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recently in sugam sangeet (light music) category. Calling it his biggest award, Singh says, “At last the SNA has taken light music seriously and our efforts have been recognised. Experts should realise how we put everything in 4-5 minutes. Most of the film song compositions that I have sung are classical raga based and have poetry of high quality. How can somebody say ‘Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahan Nahin Milta’ is light?” he wonders. Or the guitar pieces he played for Ustad Vilayat Khan in Kadambari. Or for that matter the beguiling “Rasiya Man Behkaye” that he rendered for M.B. Srinivasan for Manju.

Singh, who grew up in Delhi’s West Patel Nagar, was introduced to music by his father who was a musician. Interested in playing different instruments from a young age, there was never a doubt that he would take music as a career. After learning guitar, he started working as a casual artiste with All India Radio under the guidance of Satish Bhatia.“He found my voice had a different tonal base and started giving me opportunities to sing.” It was Bhatia who introduced him to Madan Mohan when the composer was on a visit to the city. “I sang Bahadur Shah Zafar’s ‘Lagta Nahin Hai Dil Mera Ujade Dayar Main’ for him. Impressed, he called me to Mumbai. I thought it is like the promises that film people make.” But Madan Mohan did call him and offered “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bhulaya Hoga” in Haqeeqat. While practising, he realised that it is not a complete song but could not muster courage to ask the composer. “Later, when he introduced me to Rafi sahib, Manna da and Talat sahib that I realised that he didn’t want me feel the pressure of singing my first song with such stalwarts.”

Soon the news of his skills with Hawaiian guitar also spread and he became part of the R.D. Burman team. Reflecting on his immensely popular “Dum Maro Dum” riff, Singh says, Dev (Anand) sahib narrated the situation in his inimitable style. “He said imagine smoke and clouds of heroin. Moved by his descriptions, I started playing a tune on my electric guitar, and R.D. said, this is it.”He followed it with equally impactful “Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho” (Hanste Zakhm) for his mentor Madan Mohan and “Chura Liya Hai Tumne” (Yaadon Ki Baarat) for R.D. again. It was the time when Hindi was going through a churn where his youthful guitar was more in demand than his somber voice. So even as he was getting to sing classics like “Beeti Na Bitai Raina”, he was noticed more as a guitarist. He used the time to good effect by cutting private albums where he introduced guitar to ghazals. He emerged at a time when having different voice texture was not a fad in playback singing and perhaps that’s why it took him to find acceptance as the voice of the hero. “I could survive because my voice texture was different from the reigning trinity of the time: Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. Had I copied them like many did, I would also not have survived.” Singh stresses that he didn’t feel rivalry. “Both Rafi sahib and Kishore Kumar encouraged me to do well.”

And when Madan Mohan called him again to sing for Sanjeev Kumar in Mausam, Singh was again ready to deliver the same song Dil Dhoondta Hai in two flavours and two speeds. “A perfectionist that Madanji was he composed the sad and happy versions in two different taals.” This was the time when every man was giving the angry young man a good fight at the box office and Singh could convey the pain of the common man struggling to find a niche in the big city well. "Feeling the emotions and understanding the context of the song is crucial. The computerisation of music has taken away some of its lilt and depth. Most of my songs live on because they generate the same emotions as they did in the late 70s. Being a migrant myself, I could identify with the emotional dilemma of ‘Ek Akela Is Shehar Main’ or ‘Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahan Nahin Milata’. One must also give credit to Gulzar and Nida Fazli for capturing the thought so well.” Outside the sublime world of Khayyam and Jaidev, Singh also struck a chord with Bhappi Lahiri when he sang the irresistible ghazal, “Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar Aaj Bhi Hai” (Aetbaar) for him.

“Contrary to the popular compositions, Bappi Lahiri composed many classical songs and ghazals but at the same time he loved to go with his disco image and I don’t see anything wrong in it.” Similarly, on him not getting many happy songs, Singh says lot of things depends on the stars, image and marketing as well. “I have no regrets because each of my song has withstood the test of time.” In the 80s, he once again focussed on private albums and with his wife Mitali emerged as a force in ghazal singing. “She helped me in adapting to the requirements of stage shows,” he relates. At 76, Singh is still busy with stage shows but he says, “I still get dreams of recording with a live orchestra.”
