Vinod Dua (born 11 March 1954) is a media personality of India. He has been the face of Indian television since 1974. He has seen and been associated with Indian television’s transition from a government controlled, black and white, single-channel entity to the present-day multi-channel transnational satellite TV industry. A veteran of thousands of hours of telecasting, Vinod Dua is an anchor, political commentator, election analyst, producer and director. He achived the first electronic media journalist awarded by esteemed BD Goenka Award for excellence in journalism in 1996 and the Padma Shri for Journalism in 2008 by Government of India.

Vinod Dua’s early upbringing was in the refugee colonies of Delhi. He graduated with a degree in English Literature from Hans Raj College and obtained his master's degree in literature, both from the University of Delhi. Vinod Dua was a singer and debater in his school and college days. He was also associated with theater activity in Delhi till the mid-80s. He has written two plays for children, performed by the Sutradhar Puppet Theater of Sri Ram Center for Art and Culture. He was also a member of Theatre Union, a street theatre group which created and performed plays against social problems like dowry.

Vinod Dua first appeared on television on November 27, 1974 in Yuva Manch, a Hindi youth program aired on Doordarshan (then known as Delhi television). In 1975, he anchored Yuv Jan for the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) telecast for the youth of Raipur, Muzaffarpur and Jaipur. In the same year he also began anchoring Jawan Tarang, a youth program of newly commissioned Amritsar TV. He continued to anchor youth programs for these channels till 1980. In 1981, he started anchoring the Sunday morning family magazine Aap Ke Liye and continued to do so till 1984. The year 1984 marked a turning point in his career when he co-anchored the election analysis programs on Doordarshan with the noted psephologist Dr. Prannoy Roy. Since then he has been a regular presence on election analysis programs for different television channels. In 1985, Vinod Dua anchored Janvani (translation: People's voice), the first ever program of its kind, where ministers were questioned by common people. This program became a landmark in the history of Indian television, inspiring a series of similar programs in today’s multi-channel scenario. The same year also saw initial openings of Indian television to non-governmental content providers. In 1987, he joined TV Today, a venture of the India Today Group, as its chief producer.

In 1988, he launched his own production company ‘The Communication Group’ to produce and anchor programs on current affairs, budget analyses and documentary films. In 1992 he anchored Chakravyuha for Zee TV. From 1992 to 1996 he produced Parakh, a weekly current affairs magazine telecast on Doordarshan (DD). He worked with News World India as editor in chief. He hosted the channel's primetime show Vinod Dua Live. Other notable programs he has anchored include Tasveer-e-Hind (1997–98) on DD3, Chunav Chunauti (March, 1998) on Sony Entertainment Television, Election analysis (1999) on Zee News, Pratidin and Parakh (2000–2003) on Sahara TV and Kaun Banega Mukhyamantri (2003) on STAR News. Vinod Dua is associated with IBN7 for daily news and analysis, election and budget analysis.

DD's slot sale policy hits a roadblock, applications may be invited the third time over

$

The policy has been pegged as the last hope for the bleeding DD as it aimed at bringing transparency in its functioning.Public service broadcaster Doordarshan's ambitious slot sale policy for auctioning prime time slots of DD National has hit a road block for the second time, with all the three applications received being rejected by the selection panel for the second time on technical grounds.DD's umbrella body Prasar Bharati had pegged the policy as the last hope for Doordarshan to break even its losses and bring transparency in the functioning of the public broadcaster.

Sources say Prasar Bharati is likely to invite applications for the third time over after the selection panel rejected three applications from production companies over allegedly 'flimsy' technical grounds, even though many Prasar Bharati board members are against it."This constant non-cooperation from DD and the ministry is a major reason why Prasar Bharati chief Jawhar Sircar sought a pre-mature retirement," an official said, adding that Sircar will, however, quit clearing the policy this month end.

But even if it is cleared, its implementation remains doubtful.A DD source alleged that the slot sale policy is being deliberately derailed by DD officials."When applications were invited for the second time, none of the earlier seven production houses rejected for the first time were asked to reapply, which is always the norm. Moreover, Doordarshan has not cleared dues of producers worth crores, which is discouraging many of them to send their applications," a DD official said.dna had earlier reported that the public service broadcaster is yet to clear dues of producers of around Rs156 crore, which includes producers like Ramesh Sippy and Balaji Telefilms.

Earlier, the panel had rejected seven production companies who had applied to participate in the bidding process of the slots, including big names such as Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms, Optymistix and Cinevista. The reasons included non-submission of incorporation certificate and other documents.Prasar Bharati had liberalised the existing norms of the slot sale policy in the Prasar Bharati board meeting allowing film production companies to also bid for the slot sale auctions as well.Earlier, only the production houses with an experience in Hindi general entertainment programming were entitled to bid for the auction.

The revised policy also entails that a production house will be considered eligible to participate in the e-auction if it has a turnover of a Rs.3 crore per annum as against the earlier Rs5 crore per annum, in each of the past three financial years. The new policy has also reduced the programme hours of the companies to 200 hours from the earlier criteria where the applications were required to have 300 hours of general entertainment programming experience that would include feature films in the last three calendar years.

Doordarshan has incurred additional losses to the tune of Rs309 crore this financial year as compared to the last financial year. A senior official said that the earlier SFC scheme contributed to the losses in Doordarshan.Meanwhile, Doordarshan has extended the shows under the SFC schemes, almost all of which have garnered extremely poor TRPs.

Inspiration-From a farm labourer to an IT Millionaire

Jyothi was married at the age of 16 to a man 10 years her senior. He was a farmer who had not even passed the intermediate. She was thus doomed to a fate of a daily farm labourer slogging the whole day in the paddy field under the blazing hot Telangana sun. For all her efforts, Jyothi earned a meager Rs 5 a day. She did this for five years from 1985 to 1990.She became a mother at 17. Today, Jyothi is the CEO of a $15 million IT company, Key Software Solutions, based in Phoenix, Arizona, US.

She lived in an orphanage for five years from class five to class 10. Jyothi heard an opportunity knock on her door when she started teaching the other farm hands at a night school. From a labourer, she became a government teacher. She was earning Rs 120 a month.

The American dream

Jyothi’s aspirations were slowly growing wings. She completed a vocational course from Ambedkar Open University and wanted to enroll for MA in English at Kakatiya University in Warangal. “I had often dreamt of having a name plate outside my house with the words ‘Dr Anila Jyothi Reddy.’” However, she could not pass her course and all her dreams of doing a PhD in English came to an end.But a chance meeting with a cousin from the US fired her imagination and she knew it in her heart that if she had to escape this vortex of poverty she had to go to the US.Jyothi did not waste any time and enrolled for computer software classes. She would commute to Hyderabad daily because her husband did not like the idea of her living away from home. She was determined to go to the US. But it was hard to convince her husband. She took the help of relatives and friends to apply for a US visa.

From poverty to abundance...

The American dream is not an easy one. Though Jyothi fought her fate and reached the land of opportunities, it was a rough ride. She found a PG accommodation with a Gujarati family in New Jersey at $350 per month. She used to walk three miles daily to work. She worked as a sales girl, then as a room service person in a motel in South Carolina, as a baby sitter in Phoenix, Arizona, as a gas station attendant, and software recruiter in Virginia. Finally, she started her own business.

She finally took her daughters and her husband with her to the US......

Star Ups Use Technology to provide Healthcare in Rural Areas

$

In a quiet, leafy lane in Koregaon Park, Pune, best known perhaps for its eateries, there's a group of audiologists hard at work in the Quadio Technologies office. One of them is on a Skype call with a middle-aged lady in Dhule, a town 350 km away from Pune, asking her to hold her hand up if she can hear the sounds she plays. She's playing sounds of different frequencies -- conducting a proper hearing exam -- from the call centre attached to the Quadio office. The patient is fitted with a pair ofheadphones and assisted by an attendant who will hand over the final report to her in Dhule. The company has created its own device and an internet-based solution that allows it to conduct the test remotely, taking audiometry to people in smaller towns and villages where this facility is largely lacking.

Neeraj Dotel, CEO, Quadio said: "We currently have seven such clinics in Gujarat and Maharashtra, in towns like Nadiad, Anand and Dhule and have about 100 patients coming in at each centre every month. Whenever we do outreach programmes around these towns, the footfalls often go up to 200 in a day." Dotel is part of an emerging breed of entrepreneurs who are using technology to make better quality healthcare available in rural India. While telemedicine in itself has been around for a while now, as technology evolves, it has become possible to do a lot more remotely.

Most of the times, all that the person in the remote outpost needs is a reasonably good internet connection and a phone or a computer. Very often, a 3G dongle works just fine. After spending 18 months, living in a small town in Bihar, Jagdeep Gambhir saw up close the state of healthcare in rural India. In 2014, he set up Karma Healthcare where a team of doctors in Udaipur is connected to smaller centres across the state.

"The biggest challenge is the behaviour change. People are used to going to untrained, unqualified 'doctors' and being given steroids or injections that are effective immediately. We don't do that," he said. Karma provides access to primary healthcare providers, and in some cases, specialists like pediatricians or gynecologists, and has consulted 38,000 patients so far. Gambhir is clear that to be a sustainable venture, they have to be a for-profit. However, to ensure that people go to them -- and not the local quack -- Karma's services are priced marginally below theirs.

"Technology is an enabler, but the physical connect is equally important. We find that the centres that do the best are the ones that have really good nurses," he said.It helps that the doctors are in the same state and are familiar with the local dialects, which helps put the patients at ease. In extreme cases, the patients can still travel to the doctor in person.Another company that has big plans for this space is Olito, set up earlier this year in Pune by a group of former techies. The first steps are done by establishing an actual clinic in Pune, signing on 100 doctors, and creating a mobile app.

"While patients who come to our clinic here can use the app to contact the doctors for their follow-ups, the next step will be expanding to Ghaziabad and Lucknow," said Rajesh Kumar Singh, CEO, Olito. From these cities, the company will tap into pharmacists or paramedics in smaller towns around them, who can connect patients in their villages to the doctors in Pune through the app. These would be people the locals already trust and would make it easier for Olito to connect with them, he said. Quadio recently opened a new clinic in partnership with a trust near Anand, and Dotel said that he was looking for more such collaborations with NGOs or doctors who already had a ready market for the service.

Doordarshan plans blockbuster dhamaka revival

$

Beginning this festive season, viewers of Doordarshan will be treated with Bollywood blockbusters every weekend, as the national broadcaster manages to find new ways to revive its sagging economy. The weekend in Diwali will see Doordarshan telecast one of the biggest blockbusters of last year, Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Some of the other films that are lined up for telecast include Vidya Balan’s Dirty Picture, Anurag Kashyap’s revenge saga Gangs of Wasseypur, and other hits like Neerja, Dum Laga ke Haisha, Kill Dil and Krrish 3.

Sources stated that till 2011-12 the national broadcaster used to earn a revenue of almost Rs 100 crore each year through airing of these movies. However, the annual revenue from movies has now fallen to approximately Rs 65 crore each year. Speaking to this newspaper, Doordarshan DG Supriya Sahu stated that by airing latest and popular Hindi movies every weekend, the attempt is to revive the national broadcaster’s sagging revenue and gain more viewers. “We want to reclaim our lost ground to get viewers through airing good cinema. We want to be competitive and want to give tough time to our competitors,” Sahu added. These movies will be telecast on Friday, Saturday and Sundays of each week at the 9 p.m. prime time slot. Earlier Doordarshan used to telecast movies at 10 p.m. However, the timings have now been changed when research found that 9 p.m. was the time when the national broadcaster had the highest viewership, sources stated.

With Doordarshan claiming to have a reach of more than 90 per cent of the Indian population through a network of more than 1416 terrestrial transmitters the attempt is expected to set it again towards the path of increasing TRPs and revenues, sources stated. Several of the selected films for telecast have crossed Rs 100 crore in revenue earners like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Krrish-3, Dhoom-2, Ram Leela and Holiday. Interestingly, several of the films selected as part of the festive bonanza for DD viewers are rated adult, like the Dirty Picture and Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2. However, it is understood that films telecast on the channel comply with the “Universal” certification norms of the Censor Board and have been certified for appropriate television viewing. It is understood that Doordarshan in also in talks with top film production houses in the country, which include Yashraj Films, Dharma Productions and Eros, in an attempt to procure hit and commercially successful films for its viewers.

Revisiting Old Doordarshan News Readers and Anchors - Komal G B Singh

$

She is impulsive and has a never-say-die attitude. One of television's best-remembered faces, Komal G B Singh talks to Nona Walia about how change has been constant in her life.It took her a day to quit television. And she's never regretted her decision even though life after she left the idiot box hasn't been too easy for her. But Komal persevered and now she can boast of having tried her hand at everything. Be it her own modelling agency (that went up in flames), a sound recording studio (she admits it was an impulsive decision) or being on the selection board of NIFT, it's been a roller coaster ride. And one that she professes to have enjoyed. "There have been ups and downs. But I keep myself going. Right now I'm taking classes at Shiamak Davar's dance school and I'm also learning to play the piano. Change has been the only constant in my life."

Being in the limelight for ten years and becoming a household name overnight did change Komal's perception of life drastically. "It gave me the confidence to take life head-on. I've gambled with my life and won. Some decisions haven't been easy but they've paid off." When she was 10, she decided she wanted to be a vet'. It was only after her mother warned her that she'd have buffaloes crying at her doorstep, did she give up the thought. "This fascination for doing something different got me a job at Yuvavani for Rs 7 a day in 1976. I never looked back. All India Radio those days had the same vitality as FM has today. I hosted Date With You and had a ball. I read my first news bulletin on Doordarshan in 1977. Now I feel I was raw. I had to work hard on my style over the years. But it got me instant fame. Suddenly, I was everywhere National Film Awards, the Festivals of India abroad, Republic Day parades, swearing-in of two Presidents and the funeral commentary of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. I've been the voice of ceremonies, both in good and bad times."

But there were times when glamour didn't provide her an escape from doing embarrassing chores. Like the time when she carried official saplings in her hand for the late President Shankar Dayal Sharma when he was visiting Guyana: "I was stopped at Customs and people looked at me quite startled." She blushes, as she recalls the offer made to her by Col. Kapoor to act opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Fauji: "I never wanted to act." With so many channels on air today, wasn't there any temptation to be on prime-time television? "After I left Doordarshan, Rathikant Basu offered me a job as newsreader on Star TV, but I didn't want to commit myself full-time. I thought there was much more out there that needed to be explored. Today, I am not opposed to anchoring a show on any channel. Though last year, I did anchor a show in Punjabi for Tara Punjabi. My dad was shocked, I guess he wasn't too impressed with my Punjabi."

On the personal front after a rocky marriage, Komal decided to rough it out alone. "My marriage was over in a few days. I knew I had made a terrible mistake and wanted out immediately. I came back and lived with my parents for few years. But I needed to be alone. So, I set up my own flat and am quite happy being single. I'm not against getting married, maybe if I meet the right person. But there's no hollowness in being alone, you just learn to deal with it. Life is about letting go, though it's tough facing hurdles alone. At the end of the day, I'm happy coming home to my parrot and two dogs."

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India may intervene in case any monopolistic behaviour of significant market power (SMP) is observed or brought to its notice in future although it has decided not to regulate the market power at present. It said in its draft tariff orders that it will keep a watch on the developments after implementation of the new framework. It has noted that the monopolistic behaviour is well demonstrated by both, broadcasters as well as distributors of television channels. However, it says that it is prescribing a new framework for television broadcasting sector.

In the consultation paper that has led to this draft, stakeholders had been asked to suggest whether there was a need to identify significant market powers. The stakeholders were also asked to suggest the criteria for classifying an entity as the a significant power.A majority of broadcasters felt that the issue of identifying SMPs was in the purview of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and there was no need for TRAI to do so. They also said the CCI provides adequate safeguards for preventing anti-competitive behaviour. A few broadcasters however favoured the idea of SMP identification and have given suggestions on identifying SMPs.

A few distributors of television channels submitted that there was no need to identify SMPs while the others believed that such a distinction be made. Some distributors suggested that vertically integrated entities in the distribution sector be subjected to additional regulations.

Inspiration-Railway Clerk Rescues Children Who Beg & Steal on Platforms.

Sarath Babu has been rescuing children who beg and steal on railway platforms for a long time. Today, one of his children works at a national research institute as a scientist, another is a circle inspector, and yet another is a professor.

This former railway clerk from Nellore station, known as “Daddy” to more than 120 children, runs an organization that provides food for the body and soul to some of the most battered lives in our country. He has rehabilitated children who could not read and write until they were 12 years old, yet they work as teachers today. To make such a difference to one child is an incredible task, but to do so for 120+ children is nothing short of Herculean. Ask him how he has done it and he says, “They are so intelligent already, I am nothing but a humble enabler.”

When Sarath Babu was working with the Railways, he used to see dirty urchins from different backgrounds daily on the railway platform. He first started out with providing these children with a place to eat and rest and sleep.Next, Sarath Babu approached the elders of Gollapallem village in North Amulur Panchayat, Allur Mandal of Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh, requesting them to spare a piece of land for the experiment that he was keen to conduct to rehabilitate children from the platforms. The villagers gave the land and their consent on a temporary basis so he could go ahead with this challenging task. A hut, measuring 30 x 15 feet, was constructed with some material available in the village.

The process of rehabilitation was so challenging as to be almost impossible. The children’s life experiences were such that they would send shivers down the spine of anyone listening to them. Battered and bitter, the only life many of them knew was of stealing and begging; anything different felt alien to them, hence they were suspicious of the change Sarath was trying to bring about by starting his ashram home. Rehabilitation work was slow and needed to be handled very delicately with the right amount of tact. There were instances of Sarath being tied up to his cot and being left there by one of the children, or being constantly pick pocketed by another child. Stealing and violence were all that the children knew as a way of survival.

But on seeing the efforts of Sarath and his team, the villagers supported him and encouraged him to continue working in the village. They donated 4.5 acres of land to develop the school and living space for the children, which came to be known as the CHILD ashram. The children from the village and the children from the railway platforms are treated with equal love and warmth by the residents of the area.In fact, the children of CHILD Ashram are the first to receive an invitation for any wedding or function organized by the villagers. They are also the first to be served food, a custom that is reserved for the most honoured guests.

Sarath does not like to call the CHILD ashram an orphanage. These children, who were off to a terrible start in life are now being slowly transformed again into responsible and contributing members of society. Sarath is a staunch devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba and has dedicated himself to the service of these needy children. When asked if the children who leave contribute to the ashram, his reply is that he wants them to carry on the good work by themselves somewhere else so that society benefits more. Sarath’s dream is to see each child become another Sarath!

The system that Sarath has developed is so effective that if he is to leave the organization today, the children would be able to manage the show on their own! Each child is assigned to a group, each group has a function within the ashram. One group takes care of cleaning, and other groups are responsible for cooking, going to the market, teaching the other children, washing utensils, etc. The girls’ quarters are strictly cordoned off to any men and are maintained very well with ample sanitation and privacy. The ashram children also grow their own vegetables and lovingly take care of a cow.One of the children’s father was an employee at Trirumala Tirupati Devastanam. Due to conflicts within the family, the father committed suicide, the boy left his home and lived on railway platforms, and was involved in petty thefts. This child, under Sarath’s care, went on to pass Class 10 in the 1st division and completed M.Sc. in organic chemistry with distinction. He is now working as a Jr. Scientist at the National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, Mangalore.
A second child was hit hard by his father’s sudden death and mother’s subsequent depression. He fell into bad company and took to living on platforms. After being rescued by Sarath Babu, he has today completed a polytechnic course in civil engineering and is serving as a Work Inspector in the Panchayat Raj Department.

A third child, who used to beg for alms on railway platforms dressed in nothing but ragged underwear, is today serving as a Sub-Inspector in the Andhra Pradesh Police Department. The fourth child’s story is even more heartbreaking, yet amazing. His father lost his arm in a saw-mill and later died. His mother used to sell tea and the child, left uncared for, began to live on railway platforms. He travelled the length and breadth of India and spent three spells in government observation homes in Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. He started his basic schooling when he was 11 years old, under Sarath Babu’s care. Within a year and a half, he completed Class 7, passing with 1st division. He passed with distinction in Class 10 and 12 too. He went on to complete BTech and higher studies and is now a physics lecturer in a private college.

TRAI proposes Rs 130 per month rental for 100 SD channels

According to its new draft tariff order, on which TRAI has sought suggestions, the broadcasters should also declare the maximum retail price (MRP) of their "a la carte" channels for their subscribers. Broadcasting sector regulator TRAI has proposed that television households should pay Rs 130 as monthly rental per set top box for 100 standard definition channels. According to its new draft tariff order, on which TRAI has sought suggestions, the broadcasters should also declare the maximum retail price (MRP) of their "a la carte" channels for their subscribers. TRAI has also proposed a genre-wise ceiling on the channel prices. However, broadcasters have been allowed to offer premium channels, which would have no ceiling on MRP and could be offered to subscribers only on an a la carte basis. In the draft order, TRAI has said that distributors of TV channels can form bouquets only from a la carte channels of broadcasters.

However, the retail price of such a bouquet of pay channels will not be less than 85 per cent of the sum of MRP of a la carte channels forming part of the bouquet. The regulator has also said that distributors of TV channels have to offer at least one bouquet, referred to as a basic tier, of 100 free to air channels including all the channels which have to be mandatorily shown to viewers as per the government norms. TRAI has also suggested that a subscriber may request for additional network capacity in bundles or lots of 25 SD channels at a rate of Rs 20 per month for subscribing to more than 100 channels. This accounts for additional bandwidth cost by distributors of television channels, TRAI has said. In the consultation paper, stakeholders were asked to suggest whether the option of pay-per-view (PPV) be made available to the subscribers and if so, whether the tariff of such viewing be regulated. In response, most of the stakeholders, including broadcasters and distributors of television channels are not in favour of pay-per-view option. They suggested that it is not feasible to implement PPV because it will be difficult for the broadcasters and the MSOs to keep track in reference to such volatile changes. TRAI has sought comments on its order from stakeholders by October 24.

Doordarshan Vijayawada Kendra is telecasting a special programme on the life of three-time Olympian Dandamudi Rajagopal Rao on October 14 at 1.30 p.m., according to head of programmes Vijay Bhagawan hereon Wednesday.

He said the 25-minute feature would bring to the fore the rise of the internationally acclaimed weightlifter who, incidentally, had humble beginnings at Gandhigunta village in Krishna district. Rajagopal participated in the London (1948), Helsinki (1952) and Melbourne Games (1956) in the heavyweight category. The feature, which will be aired in the Saptagiri channel, will have rare photographs of the six-feet plus-tall weightlifter and also about the accolades he received the world over for his exploits as a sportsperson.

“The experiences of his kith and kin will add sheen to the narrative,” said Mr. Bhagawan. The site of the indoor stadium on M.G. Road, which carried his name, was donated by him to promote good health and good habits among youngsters.Speaking to The Hindu , Dandamudi Basavaraj, son of Rajagopal Rao, said the family members were planning to float a trust in the name of his illustrious father to help the up-and-coming weightlifters. “After discussing with my other family members we will take a call on the issue,” he added.

Breathtaking feats

He said Rajagopal’s feats had attracted many viewers all over the country and he used to break iron chains tied to his body by taking a deep breath and flexing muscles. “He even stopped an Ambassador car from moving. He lifted a bullock cart with ease,” he pointed out.The Olympian was conferred with titles such as Mr. Asia, Andhra Bheema, Andhra Hercules, Indian Tarzan, and The Giant of India.

He is the first Indian to receive Mr. Asia title. Rajagopal was the Indian weightlifting champion continuously for 13 years from 1945 to 1958 and he was the first president of the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association. Rajagopal passed away in 1981 at the age of 64.
