In 2016, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-2016) will focus on the theme: “ICT entrepreneurship for social impact”, in accordance with Resolution 68 and as endorsed by ITU Council 2015.

‘Whispers of Warming’, a documentary made by Doordarshan on climate change by its assistant director of Programmes Anoop Khajuria has bagged the top honour for Best Television Documentary at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union TV Award competition.

The competition was held in Krabi, Thailand. The DD film competed with 40 films from 20 countries across the world. Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer Jawhar Sircar has congratulated the director and his team.

The one hour documentary film on climate change attempts to tell the story of people in the Ladakh division in the western Himalayas who are being impacted by climate change due to global warming. The film shows an extraordinary journey onto pinnacles and gorges of Kashmir Himalayas, travelling through its geographical textures, seasonal hues, endemic communities, languages and cultures to document the phenomenon of climate change through people’s perceptions and their struggle to adapt to the changing weather conditions following stories and characters in Jammu & Kashmir.

It starts in January 2015 when the silence and wilderness of Zanskar was shattered by a massive landslide in River Phugtal blocking the river at 4,000 meters in minus 35 degree Celsius. A 14 kilometer long frozen lake threatened to wash away people and villages below.

Earlier in September 2014, the Gujjars - nomadic sheep herders - felt extreme and critical low temperatures in September 2014 at Zojila Pass of Pir Panjal range while the Kashmir valley was inundated with heavy and excessive rains marooning millions and killing two hundred. The Meteorological office explained the phenomenon as a ‘rare condition’.
Heavy rains coupled with warming are melting the Glaciers faster than normal. Rongdum, a village in Zanaskar valley reels under the shortage of green fodder. Plant Species are vanishing as their life cycles are broken by dry spells. Drass- the second coldest inhabited place in the world after Siberia - is living under threat of flash floods. .

The Aryans, a hymn singing community believed to be of Mediterranean origin, is experiencing agriculture bonanza amidst changing weather patterns. But Shilikchay Kargil is hard hit with curly moth disease hitting fruiting plants and less snowfall decreasing crucial moistures for seed germination.

DD to auction prime time slots under new policy

Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati will auction prime time slots, between 7-11 pm, on its national channel Doordarshan under a new policy that was cleared by the board on Monday. Producers will provide content in return for a share in the advertising revenue under the new policy.

The modalities of the new 'slot sale' policy were discussed in a meeting of Prasar Bharati Board, which was also attended by Bollywood actor Kajol, who was nominated earlier this year.

Sources said in the meeting chaired by Prasar Bharati chairperson A Surya Prakash, it was felt that e-auctions could be held for the 7-11 pm slots for all the seven days of the week barring Saturdays. The new policy is expected to be rolled out by October 1.

"We have decided that on Saturdays, Prasar Bharati Board would reserve the 7-8 pm slot for its own content and the 8 to 11 pm slot will be auctioned. For the rest of the days of the week the 7-11 pm band will be auctioned. We hope that the slot sale policy comes into effect from October onwards," a board member said.

Sources also said the programmes approved earlier under the Self-Financed Commission (SFC) scheme, under which Doordarshan acquires programmes and then recovers cost through ad revenue, will also be utilised by the channel.

Earlier there were reports that many of the SFC programmes, including one on the life of Deendayal Upadhaya and another on the life of Savitribai Phule, could be scrapped.

One of the members, Ashok Tandon, had drawn the attention of the board to this issue, sources said. "The programmes which have been approved will be utilised and a committee will look into these aspects. However, there may be some shifting of the time slots based on the auction process results," a source said.

In the meantime about 154 producers have claimed that they have invested Rs 8-10 lakh each in making serials under the SFC scheme which are being scrapped.

Some like Ujwal Jain have also moved court seeking a stay on the new policy. "We have invested Rs 15-20 crore on serials based on guidelines provided by DD. All we ask is that we at least be evaluated before the policy is done away with,'' a producer said.

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal on Tuesday inaugurated the world’s largest solar rooftop plant in Beas, about 40 km from Amritsar. This 11.5 MW rooftop plant is spread across 82 acres and is the largest of its kind in the world. The solar power plant, made at the cost of Rs 139 crores, has been built by Radha Saomi Satsang Beas (RSSB), a religious organization.

In order to promote green technology, the plant will generate about 150 lakh units of power annually and is expected to offset 19,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. In addition to this, seven other solar plants of 8 MW each were also inaugurated, thus making the Beas Dera campus the only campus generating solar power of 19.5 MW at multiple rooftops in the country.Prakash Singh Badal lauded the state’s efforts to emerge as a front runner in solar power generation.

Punjab has made immense contributions to tap the power potential from various renewable energy resources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded Punjab for being one of the best performing states for capacity addition of solar energy during Re-Invest-2015.Highlighting the significance of this unique solar power project at Dera Beas, the New & Renewable Energy Resources Minister Bikram Singh Majithia told ANI News that this project with enormous environmental friendly benefits would be instrumental in the abatement of four lakh tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the next 25 years, which was equivalent to planting nearly two lakh trees.

He also said that the power generated from this project will benefit about 8000 homes, as reported by Business Standard.Currently, Punjab is generating 470 MW of solar power and another project of 500 MW is still in the pipeline. The state government is hopeful that Punjab will generate about 1000 MW of solar power in the year 2016/17 and by the year 2022, it will achieve its target of 2552 MW.

In the auction, private broadcasters will bid for slots on Free Dish for their television channels. The reserve price of each slot has been fixed at Rs.4.3 crore, the same as in the previous auction that took place in February. The DTH operator had added nine channels in the 26th auction.DD Free Dish, which currently operates a total of 80 channels on its platform, is planning to add 24 new channels, increasing the number to 104 in the next three months.According to the people mentioned above, who did not want to be named, Doordarshan has not reserved any slot for regional language channels.

Income Tax Return is not considered unless it is verified

$
0
0
Several taxpayers diligently file their tax returns but forget to verify them. They believe their return filing process is complete once return has been duly submitted to the income tax department.
Your income tax (I-T) return submission is not complete unless you’ve ticked off these steps

Step 1: You have e-filed your tax return

Step 2: You have verified the return

Step 3: Final return processing by the tax department i.e. refund is processed or intimation under Section 143(1) is received.

Taxpayers who do not verify end up with incomplete filings. A refund, if any, is not processed in such cases.

Returns can be verified either electronically or by sending the physical ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru. ITR-V is a one-page document, emailed by the I-T department to you; it can also be downloaded from the department’s website. ITR-V must be signed in blue ink and sent via ordinary or speed post to CPC, Bengaluru. You cannot courier the ITR-V. Sending the physical ITR-V involved a lot of problems. With the introduction of electronic verification, your return can now be verified easily and quickly.

There are several ways to verify your tax returns . To begin, log in to your e-filing account with your PAN and date of birth. Click on ‘e-File’ from the blue top bar. There is an option under it, ‘e-Verify Return’; select it. Select one of the options listed to e-verify.

EVC sent to registered email ID and mobile number

This option is available to taxpayers who have a total income of less than R5 lakh and there is no refund. A 10-digit alphanumeric code is sent to their email id and mobile number, registered on the tax department website, which is valid for 72 hours.

EVC via Aadhaar OTP

If you don’t have a refund, you can also e-verify via an Aadhaar OTP. Your Aadhaar card must be linked to your PAN on the e-filing website. The OTP is sent to your mobile number registered with Aadhaar and is valid for 10 minutes.

EVC through net banking

Those with an income of over Rs 5 lakh, or with a refund, have to use net banking to e-verify returns. If your bank is authorised, you’ll be able to log in to e-filing through net banking. First, log in to your bank account and look for the e-filing option. When you confirm to e-verify, an EVC will be automatically generated and applied to the return; your e-verification will be complete. Don’t assume the refund will be credited to the net banking account you have used to e-verify. It is credited to the account selected for refund in your tax return, which may be different from the account you used to e-verify.

EVC through bank account number

You can also verify your tax return through your bank account number by logging in to the income tax department website. You bank account number must be pre-validated. To validate, you have to select your bank name, enter the bank account number, IFSC and mobile number, and validate it on the income tax department website.

The department has issued a circular giving a final chance to taxpayers to put their past tax returns in order. If you had submitted your tax return for the past six years from AY 2009-10 to AY 2014-15, but the return could not be processed for want of ITR-V, you can e-verify it by August 31, 2016. The department shall process such returns by November 30. This will help put your past records in order.

The DD Files: ‘Hum Log’ versus ‘Buniyaad’

$
0
0

Both shows are landmark depictions of the Great Indian Family. If you were to pick two shows that defined Doordarshan in the 1980s, they would most certainly be Hum Log and Buniyaad. Both serials were about the Great Indian Family, but in its scope, writing and emotional appeal, Buniyaad was the Mahabharat to Hum Log’s Ramayana.

Hum Log came first. By the end of July 1984, middle India was hooked on to the life and times of the luckless and lustreless family led by Basesar Ram (Vinod Nagpal). The characters of Hum Log included subservient and self-sacrificing women led by Bhagwanti (Jayshree Arora), Basesar’s wife, and unemployed young men nurturing audacious dreams. Its themes covered the thwarting of ambition due to lack of encouragement and resources and dowry. More than 40,000 letters were posted to the makers of the 157-episode series, which was written by the eminent Hindi novelist Manohar Shyam Joshi and directed by P Kumar Vasudev. Viewers laughed and wept with the characters with whom they identified completely.

Only seven years later, the families that were shedding copious tears over Bhagwanti’s silent and endless suffering were discussing incest and adultery with the Forresters in The Bold and the Beautiful and gaping at endless legs between satin sheets. Which could explain why a rerun of Hum Log that was compressed into 52 episodes and telecast in 2000 wasn’t half as successful.

Hum Log was inspired by Information and Broadcast Minister Vasant Sathe’s trip to Mexico, where he watched a popular television show that educated as well as entertained. Every episode ended with the affable actor Ashok Kumar in a sharp suit and dark glasses explaining the theme of the day and prodding viewers to think about what they had just watched. The show did generate progressive conversations about the empowerment of women, education and equal opportunities, but it also evoked a complete sense of identification with its pitiable characters that ultimately proved stifling both on and off the screen. The actors – most of them from the Delhi theatre scene – were mobbed on the streets and received marriage proposals. Others like Seema Bhargava (Gunvanti, the eldest daughter) were so stuck in their self-sacrificing moulds that their television careers nearly died with the show.

Divya Seth, as the attractive middle daughter Rupvanti who dreams of a film career, was suitably chastised and stripped of her ambition – just the viewers wanted it to be. There was no end to Bhagwanti’s suffering because that’s how the audiences wanted to see her. And before we blame Ekta Kapoor for unleashing the saas-bahu scourge on television, let’s give credit where it is due – the fantastic Sushma Seth, who plays the sharp-tongued and hard-to-please matriarch with a soft corner for Rupvanti and contempt for her servile daughter-in-law Bhagwanti. The conflicts between the women were mostly one-sided and without the claps of thunder and dramatic crash zooms that was de rigeur two decades later.

Hum Log whetted the appetite for more family sagas – and in 1986, there was another epic written by Manohar Shyam Joshi on the small screen. Buniyaad was directed by Ramesh Sippy and was, in many ways, an improvement on its predecessor. The series was better filmed – the sets and framing were superior and realistic – and the story of several generations of a Pakistani Hindu family that migrated to India during the Partition was better fleshed out. One reason could be the fact that Sippy’s family had moved from Karachi to Mumbai in 1948, and the director identified closely with the material. The agony of Haveli Ram (Alok Nath), who grapples with his decision to leave behind his ancestral home, is chillingly real.

The ensemble cast featured some of the finest actors of the day – Anita Kanwar, Kanwaljeet Singh, Mazhar Khan, Soni Razdan and Kiran Juneja. The masterful writing and robust production not only recreated the pre-Independence-era mansions and later the refugee camps and middle-class homes, it also straddled generations and mirrored their changing worldviews brilliantly. If Hum Log expanded the audience for Indian television, Buniyaad owned it. The Partition had been fruitfully explored by literature but except for stray instances on the screen (Dharamputra, Garm Hava), the historical tragedy hadn’t been adequately explored in popular culture. The unrelentingly dark Tamas would arrive two years after Buniyaad went on air.

Wisely enough, the makers of Buniyaad didn’t attempt to re-interpret the classic. It would have been sacrilege.

Subramania Pillai started performing from the age of 10 alongside his uncle. The other nagaswaram stalwarts during his days were Tiruveezhimizhalai Brothers, Sembanarkoil Brothers and Tiruvidaimarudur P.S. Veerusamy Pillai.

As a nagaswaram player Subramania Pillai was well known for his spontaneity and his concerts were incomplete without the famous ‘Magudi,’ and his name almost became synonymous with it. Mahaperiyava of Kanchi honoured him with the title ‘Swetaranya Punnaga Nadhamani’. He was also honoured with titles by many mutts including Dharmapuram, Tiruvavaduthurai and Tiruppananthal. His vidwat earned him a name even outside the country, such as in Srilanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

The first concert on the inaugural day of the Madras station of All India Radio, was by Subramania Pillai. He was also the first nagaswara vidwan to receive the Sangeet Natak Academy award. The Tamizh University of Thanjavur conferred on him the Honorary Doctorate. Never before was any nagaswara vidwan given such an honour.Tiruvenkaataar, as he was also known, introduced the tambura and violin as accompaniments at his nagaswara concerts. He accompanied Madurai Somasundaram in several concerts as a ganjira vidwan.

His son Sundaranathan informs that his father was accompanied by doyens of thavil such as Kumbakonam Thangavelu Pillai, Malaikottai Panchami Thavilkar and Needamanagalam Meenakshisundaram Pillai. He adds “My brother Selvarathinam took to vocal music. He got trained under Madurai Mani Iyer. Unfortunately he passed away death snatched him away early. I entered Government service.”Kottur Rajarathinam and Ganesan are Subramania Pillai’s disciples. A sincere musician, Pillai was deeply concerned about nagaswara artists. After dedicating almost six decades of his life to music, nagaswaram particularly, he passed away at the age of 80.

His grand daughter, Dr. Kala Rani, and her husband S. Maniharan (IAS Retd.) have instituted a fund through a trust which honours every year two artists from the nagaswaram-thavil artist community with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 each during the nagaswaram festival, at Brahma Gana Sabha. This year the festival was held in memory of Tiruvenkaataar. Sembanarkoil S.R.G. Rajanna and Achalapuram Chiinathambi were honoured. Subramania Pillai’s family also offers financial assistance to deserving students of nagaswaram to buy the instrument.
