Technology Updates: Storage of Data

$

Fresh breakthroughs in tape, disc, film and glass herald a new era of eternal data archiving. If employed intelligently, there’s no reason we won’t be able to preserve Keeping Up With Kardashians for our great-great grandchildren. Adrian Pennington reports. Many in the industry are concerned about how to store their data over the next year or two. But how do we preserve our data for the next decade? Or the next century? Or beyond?

In Egypt, around 196 BC, someone carved an honours list in three languages onto a slab of granodiorite. The mundane text was rediscovered in 1799 and finally decrypted to provide the essential key to modern understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization. The Rosetta Stone is the perfect database. It has physically lasted for centuries and its information can be read without any new technology. If only the quest to find an archive solution for digital media were as simple. The world is overflowing with digital data, and the digital universe is doubling every two years according to IDC. A share of this digital universe has value in the long term so what are the options?

In the digital age, tape has proved surprisingly durable. Anyone who has seen the film The Big Easy will know how easy it is to put a magnet next to tape and erase its contents. Tape is subject to degradation and bit drop out over time, and while industry standard LTO gets around this by recording data without the revolving head drum used on video tape, the system needs manual intervention every few years in order to migrate the data stored on it to the latest generation.

The new generation of LTO-7 tape, manufactured by Fujifjlm, is composed of Barium Ferrite, a medium with magnetic properties which means the tape does not deteriorate, and it gives tape headends a longer lifespan. Plus the capacity has jumped from 2.5TB to 6TB.“It's like a whole new format,” says Fuji's commercial manager Richard Alderson. “Nothing has been done like this in the past and we are the only manufacturer who can provide gen-7 tape.” Which is increasingly important given the move to UHD.

“A single movie at 4K can need over a petabyte and as the data sets get bigger, customers are realising that tape is far safer and more reliable than disc as a storage medium,” explains David McKenzie, storage and archive specialist, Oracle.Oracle's StorageTek division is readying a new enterprise version of its tape drive called T10K for release early 2017. This will have capacity for 10-15TB. In addition Oracle is working with the team and the Diva technology from Front Porch, the firm it acquired in September 2014. Meanwhile LTO-8 with a projected 12.8TB capacity and 427MBps speed is expected in three years.

“Tape is far from dead. In fact it is a lot cheaper than disc. It is more environmentally friendly and most important it is far less corruptible. It's the reason why broadcasters like the BBC and Sky choose to archive their programme catalogues on it.”

30 year optical disc

The main alternative to LTO is optical disc, which, as McKenzie alludes to, can drain power in order to keep the mechanism cool. Earlier this year, Sony and Panasonic launched new optical disc-based storage systems for data centres. Sony's Everspan can store 181 Petabytes for 100 years. Four systems can be ganged together to offer 724PB of total storage. To grasp that, if you were to envision one bit of data as the equivalent to one second, then 1PB would equal 285 million years.

Radio firms seek better audience measurement system

Radio operators sought a credible, transparent and representative audience measurement system to enhance the quality of their content and their advertising revenue at an open house organized by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The current measurement system provides data on popular channels and programmes to private FM radio companies, advertisers and ad agencies. The data is provided by TAM Media Research through an independent division, RAM or Radio Audio Measurement, which is a joint venture between research firms IMRB International and Nielsen Media Research.

TAM Media Research maps FM radio channels only in the top four radio markets—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati’s radio division All India Radio (AIR) too carries out periodic audience surveys in 65 cities of its own channels.

Trai had issued a consultation paper in March inviting comments from all stakeholders on issues related to radio audience measurement and ratings. The comments were invited from radio service providers, including AM (amplitude modulated—short wave and medium wave) and FM (frequency modulated) operators, industry bodies like Association of Radio Operators for India (AROI), advertisers and radio listeners.

Owing to the expansion in the FM radio market after the phase 3 auctions, the regulator and the radio operators expressed the need to expand the number of towns and cities mapped in the current measurement system. In its comment uploaded on the Trai website, HT Media Ltd, which runs Fever 104 stations, said, “Due to expansion in existing and new markets and innovation in technology, the scope of improvement is being felt. The listenership of FM radio on mobile phones should be added while measuring data. “In addition to the existing 4 towns, measurement needs to be followed in other top cities, at least the cities having 6 or more frequencies,” it added. HT Media is the publisher of Mint.

Prasar Bharati which runs AIR also said that the radio markets will progressively grow after the roll-out of new licences and suggested different rating agencies for different regional radio markets. “Unlike TV, radio has a local/regional market,” said a Prasar Bharati official who declined to be named. “AIR should be made a part of the technical and advisory council of the industry-led body (if recommended by Trai) deciding the design and implementation of the measurement and rating system,” the official said.

Others questioned the credibility of data from TAM Media Research, raising concerns over its reporting methodology. “The measurement criteria of TAM Media Research are not representative enough for the operators to enhance their content and for the advertisers to make an informed decision. RAM is not able to project the actual number of listeners... The panel size and the coverage are limited to just four cities,” said Sanat Kumar Mishra, national marketing head and vice-president at Music Broadcast Pvt. Ltd, the promoter of Radio City.

TAM, however, pointed to a lack of interest on the part of the radio operators for subscribing to its data. “We have asked the operators, time and again, to fund our expansion but nobody has come forward. There are limited subscribers for the data as well. TAM is far away from breaking even,” said Tejas Naik, manager, key accounts, at TAM Media Research.

According to Trai, radio broadcasting sector revenues are expected to reach Rs.3,950 crore by 2019, from Rs.1,720 crore in 2014. Though the sector is expected to garner only 5% of total media and entertainment advertisement revenues by 2019, it is important to frame a transparent system as operators solely depend on advertisements for revenue generation.

“The regulator will analyse all the comments received from various stakeholders and will soon come up with the recommendations that would protect their interests,” said a Trai official.

Chunauti: This 1987 TV show was the first to capture the campus life

$

The 1987 Doordarshan (DD) show, Chunauti, might have had only 22 episodes, but it endeared itself to the audience in that duration. The show, which revolved around college life and subjects like student unions, elections, donations, ragging and hostel conditions, soon became a hit. Actors like Arif Zakaria and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, among others, made their debut with this show, which was directed by Madan Kumar and late Sanjeev Bhattacharya. Seasoned actors like the late Mohan Bhandari, Paresh Rawal, Rajiv Verma, late Ajit Vachhani, and Bharat Kapoor added more flavour to it. Suchitra feels the authenticity and innocence of the show was what worked like a charm. “Most of us were school and college kids, and not professional actors. That brought an element of reality to it. I would carry books to the sets to study for my exams. Sanjeev made it a breeze for all of us to do the show,” she says. Ali Asgar, who was also part of Chunauti, feels that the audience connected with the “content and dialogues, which were strong”. He says, “We were emotionally involved in the show. Nowadays, TV shows are like junk food.” Arif, on the other hand, feels the script by Ashok Patale and Mir Muneer was “tight and fresh”. He says, “Something as dramatic, intense and emotional as campus life had never been shown on TV till then. The title song, which was sung by Amit Kumar, was a hit too.” Arif played the role of Ramakant, a student leader. Beyond the college politics, his love triangle with Suchitra and Channa Ruparel was also lapped up by the audience.

Looking back, Suchitra says, “I had just given my 10th standard board exams, and I fought with my parents to let me do the show. I promised them that after this serial, I’d get back to studies. Of course, that never happened, as modelling and acting offers poured in.” She played a student from a Hindi medium school, but “being a spoilt Nepean Sea Road kid, who could barely speak Hindi properly at the time, deliberately mispronouncing English words and mixing up my Vs and Ws was a challenge,” adds the actor, with a laugh. Ali says that though he had worked on a few shows before this one, “no one took me seriously”. “Everyone wanted to cast me in a comic role. I played a rich brat’s sidekick. I remember, while auditioning, I had a long dialogue, and I got stuck, and I gave a ‘gaali’, and everyone laughed. The next thing I knew, I was cast,” he adds. Ali fondly remembers the directors till today, and how they would stay over at his house on weekends. Arif was a student in Sydenham College at the time. He says, “It was my first experience in front of the camera, and I didn’t know it would become so popular. While working, we were all high on adrenaline, and wanted to give it our best. For me, the biggest star back then was Mohan Bhandari. I got `750 per episode, which I thought was a lot of money.” As the crew shot in Ismail Yusuf, Wilson and Sophia Colleges in Mumbai, most shoots took place at night or on the weekends to get a relatively empty campus. Suchitra says, “Being so young and not used to staying awake so late, I would invariably fall asleep on the sets. Sanjeev would wake me up, and coax me to shoot for five more minutes. He was wonderful.” On the other hand, Ali remembers going to Chowpatty Beach after the shoot to chill with the cast. He says, “We had fun together, and were passionate about working. Everything was exciting back then.”

The Persian Service of External Services Division of All India Radio is launching a multimedia website and mobile App to coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Iran. All India Radio has been broadcasting to Iran in Persian language since 1941. It is one of the oldest services in which external broadcast was done by AIR. The Persian language Service has stood through the thick and thin of the relations between India and Iran and the many trials and tribulations that Iran has witnessed in the last few decades. Presently, Persian language broadcast of AIR is done for 1hr 45 minutes in two transmissions of 45 minutes and 1 hour respectively in the morning and in the evening. The broadcast is available on Shortwave. Programme menu of the Persian Service is reflective of the centuries old bond that India shares with Iran (Persia) in the fields of art, architecture, culture, heritage, literature, music etc and also the contemporary partnership and cooperation in the fields of trade, commerce, technology, medicine, research and development in oil exploration etc. Indian and Persian music of various genres also form a major part of the content. The service is immensely popular among the listeners and receives close to 1000 letters per month besides many emails.

The Persian Service of All India Radio was of late facing competitions from other international broadcasters like BBC, China Radio International, Radio Pakistan among others who have started internet and mobile based services for Iran as the younger generation prefer listening to radio broadcast on internet and mobile Apps. Launching of internet live-streaming and mobile Apps of Persian Service through a multimedia web platform of international standard airworldservice.org/persian during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Tehran will go a long way not only in meeting the challenges from other broadcasters but also help in further broadening the listeners base of All India Radio. It is also pertinent to mention that AIR is also starting a WhatsApp based listners' response forum for its Persian service where listeners from Iran can directly interact.

Inspiration - This Former IIT Prof Once Taught RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. Today He’s Helping Tribals in MP...

If you happen to be in the densely vegetated area of Betul and Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh, you are likely to stumble upon an unassuming old man with a scraggly white beard, quietly making his way through the wilderness on his cycle. He goes by the name Alok Sagar and was once a resident of New Delhi. For the last 34 years however, this man has been working untiringly for the betterment of tribals in Madhya Pradesh.

.......Yet, what makes his selfless efforts more noteworthy is the fact that Sagar left a lucrative career as an IIT Delhi professor to serve the people.

Sagar is an alumnus of IIT Delhi himself, with a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering as well as a Masters from the reputed institute. He then went on to pursue his PhD at Houston University in Texas, US. Upon returning to India, Sagar joined his alma mater as a professor and even went on to teach current RBI Governor, Raghuram Rajan.

By 1982 however, Sagar felt that he could contribute more to the development of the country by working with people on the ground. He resigned from his well-paying job and took off towards Betul and Hoshangabad.

For 34 years, his neighbours and the tribals he worked with had been completely in the dark about Sagar’s past as a renowned academic at a prestigious institution. It was only during the assembly elections in the district when, unable to verify his background, the Betul district administration asked him to leave. This was when Sagar revealed his true identity..................
