Assam's eminent theatre personality Arun Sarma passed away on 27.03.2017, World Theatre Day. He was 86. The thespian died at a private hospital in New Delhi at 5.30am. He was undergoing lung cancer treatment there since the third week of January. His body was brought to Guwahati this evening. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that Sarma would be cremated with full state honours here tomorrow.

Sarma was the only Assamese to be honoured with both the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi awards. In 2010, he was houred with the Padma Shri. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law and three grandchildren.

Sarma stepped into the world of drama through the play Urukha Poja in 1952. The play was based on class division in the post-Independence era. Through decades-long untiring efforts since then, Sarma brought about a revolution to Assamese drama.

He has written 20 plays for the stage and 45 for the All India Radio (AIR). Sri Nibaron Bhattacharjya, Agnigarh, Aditir Atmokotha, Parashuram, Siyor, Buranji Path, Onya Ek Odhyay and Urukha Poja are some of his celebrated stage plays.

Dhumuha Jetiya Ahe was the first play by Sarma to be aired by the Guwahati centre of AIR in 1953. Kokhyasuto, Sthawor, Fill Up The Gaps, Dutye Eke Dui and Trisanku are some of his prominent radio plays.

Of his five novels, Axirbador Rong was the most popular and he got the Sahitya Akademi award for it n 1998. The novel knits communal tension, love, life of migrant families and also points out the lacuna in Hinduism. Its protagonist, Gajen, remains indelibly imprinted in the minds of readers. Gajen was a Hindu youth who loved a girl from a migrant Muslim family and gave her shelter when communal violence wiped out her entire village. When he learnt that there was no ceremony to convert people from other religions to Hinduism, Gajen converted to Islam to marry the helpless girl. The play was given a film adaptation by director Jahnu Barua as Ajeyo in 2013.

Sarma was born on November 3, 1931 in Dibrugarh. He studied in Tezpur High School and Cotton College here. He worked for a few months as a teacher in Chaiduar High School and then joined The Assam Tribune as a proof-reader before joining the Guwahati centre of AIR as a producer in 1960. He retired as its station director in 1986.

He was honoured with the Asam Sahitya Sabha (drama) Award (1967), Asom Natya Sanmilan Award (2001), Assam Valley Literary Award (2005), Sankaracharyya Avatar Award Literature (2010), Japan Prize International (1980), Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Award (1982), Prix Futura Berlin Commendation Certificate (1983) and Akashvani Award.

Drama personality Baharul Islam said a few months ago Sarma had expressed a desire to watch his play Sri Nibaron Bhattacharjya on stage again. "We prepared to stage the play but before that he passed away and his wish remains unfulfilled," said Islam, who runs the drama school Srigal.

As the news of his death broke, condolences poured in. Asam Sahitya Sabha also lamented his demise.

"Till the last days of his life Sarma was actively associated with the drama movement in Assam. His demise is a great loss to the state," said Lakhinandan Bora, former Sabha president.

"Sarma was a great dramatist like Girish Karnad and Mohan Rakesh but unfortunately we did not try to patronise his creation outside the state to give him proper recognition in his lifetime," said Dulal Roy.

"Srimanta Xankardeb, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Arun Sarma - these three dramatists created a new genre in Assamese drama. As someone from the field of drama I had a close relationship with him. Even our drama group BAA was started with his drama Agnigarh," said director Anup Hazarika.

Writer Ratna Oja said Sarma always encouraged newcomers. All Assam Students' Union, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and state industries and commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary also condoled Sarma's demise.

Inspiration:From Bus Routes to Flooded Streets, This Man Has Been Making Free Maps for Citizens for Over 10 Years

In the last week of November 2015, as torrential rains started causing flooding in Chennai, a community-driven app began getting heavy traffic, before going viral on social media. Called Chennai Flood Map, the app displayed an interactive map of Chennai and allowed any citizen to mark a street as flooded. By pooling together the knowledge from thousands of citizens, the app was able to piece together the flooding status across Chennai in real time and provide the information to its users. The cartographer for this app was a talented 27-year-old map analyst, Arun Ganesh. An accomplished contributor to OpenStreetMap, Arun is popularly know as the ‘Map Man of India’. From helping Tata Institute of Social Sciences design the geography section of its digital literacy program to creating India’s first public transport map, Arun has been working for over 10 years to make maps useful and accessible for the common man.

Arun was a born in Dubai, where his father worked as a mechanical engineer in the oil industry. A few years later, the family moved to Abu Dhabi. A quiet child who preferred spending time with his books and computer, Arun spent his formative years flipping through his elder sister’s world atlas, memorising the names of interesting places, tracing the outlines of countries, memorizing place names and exploring the relationships between mountains, forests, rivers and cities. Unsurprisingly, Arun developed a passion for cartography and a deep interest in all kinds of maps at an early age. His favourite leisure-time activity was creating detailed plans of imaginary cities on the backside of discarded drafting sheets from his father’s office. Even his favourite computer games were the ones that revolved around maps – GTA, Age of Empires, Cities XL and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Arun was also fascinated by aeroplanes and aviation. He loved flying, especially the bird’s eye view of land and sense of freedom that being high above ground gave him. It was while flying to India during his summer vacation that he was struck by the idea of taking the depiction of Abu Dhabi and Chennai airports in Microsoft Flight Simulator similar to real life. Arun was still in school when he began devoting his free time to learning the software required to create these 3D models. He also learnt Photoshop to give accurate texture to the topography. Having done this, he began creating add-ons and animations for the flight simulator before releasing them online.

By the time he reached class 10, he was already a very popular member of the global Flight Simulator Community for his beautiful aerial photos from planes. Somebody on the forum once called him ‘plane mad’, which Arun liked so much that he made it his username. Thanks to his love for maps and planes, Arun wanted to become an air traffic controller. After passing out from high school, he decided to pursue electronics and communications engineering from Anna University in Chennai. During his college days, he spent most of his free time fine-tuning his cartographic skills and contributing heavily to OpenStreetMap projects. For the uninitiated, OSM is a collaborative volunteer project to create crowd-sourced editable maps of the world that can be freely used and shared by anybody under an open license.
Realising how difficult it was to go around the city without information about the bus stops and routes, Arun travelled across the city to document all its bus stops and routes for his first civic project – the Chennai Bus Route Mapping Project. He also attended and spoke about his project at BarCamps, blogger meetups, and Tweetups. It was at one of these BarCamps that Arun met two people who helped him build a prototype website. The website would display the maps he had designed and allow the user to click on a bus stop (text) to check the routes associated with it. The first Indian public transport map website, the Chennai Bus Route Mapping Project was built completely on open source in 2008, a time when Google Transit didn’t even exist!

After a group of Mumbaikars got in touch with Arun, he also designed the ChaloBEST mapping project for Mumbai’s BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport) buses routes and stops. Next, inspired by London’s metro map, he designed a local train map for Chennai and uploaded the map on Chennai’s Wikipedia page. Within a day, Arun’s map garnered much appreciation from Wikipedia users along with requests to make similar maps for other cities too. The talented cartographer obliged by taking up the task of making the road map of India, starting with the Golden Quadrilateral project, and uploading on Wikipedia. Made using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Arun’s maps were of a quality that had never been seen online and soon, they were present on practically every India-related page on Wikipedia. At one point of time, over 30,000 articles related to India on Wikipedia were using maps made by Arun!

AIR, Sambalpur bagged two second prizes in the Akashvani Annual Awards-2016 for its entries 'Rambair Katha' under Womens Programme category and 'Nua Sakhal' under Farm & Home category. The programmes were authored by Shri Ratan Kumar Pujari and Shri Ganesh Ram Seth respectively. Both the programmes were produced by Shri Randeep Kumar Pradhan, Programme Executive assisted by Laxman Kumar Panda, Santosh Ping, Programmes Executives and Shri Satyaranjan Panda, Technician whereas music was scored by Shri Bijay Kumar Behera and Shri Prafulla Kumar Mitra respectively.

Gist of the programme 'Ram Bair Katha': For a change, this is the true story of the indomitable spirit and fighting quality seen in a woman to whom everybody should doff his or her hat and applaud. Even the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India felicitated her and mentioned about her in his “Mann Ki Baat”. Born in a typical village with all the associated bottlenecks and obsolete customs and mindset, she had a normal childhood, except that though her friends were reading in the village school, she was deprived of that as her father could not afford it. On attaining puberty she was married off. But the fact that she gave birth to a daughter was not acceptable to her family and she was sent to her parental home. Though later she was brought back, after the birth of her second daughter the old story repeated with much hostility and she was kind of driven away. After few months she got the news of her husband’s death. Any lesser mortal would have given up but she was made of sterner stuff. It is not easy for a young widow to rear two growing girls. Then she decided to take up cultivation in a big way and her mother stood by her as a pillar of rock. She used to sell vegetables herself in a bicycle in the local markets. Gradually, she ploughed the profits earned into acquiring more land and appointed more hands in her endeavour.  In course of time she acquired a cult status and the male dominated society grudgingly admired the guts and gumption and steely will shown by Rambai. She proved that women are not weak but are made of sterner stuff. She would not suffer injustice blindly or take it lying down. She possesses the capability to change the society. She should only be given a scope for her innate strength to blossom through education.

Gist of the programme 'Nua Sakhal':The programme “Nuan Sakhal” is about a typical village of western Odisha. Here, agriculture is totally dependent on a good monsoon. If by chance, rainfall is inadequate, the sufferings of small and marginal farmers multiplies manifold. Not only the people suffer, so also the domestic animals as fodder is hard to come by. Highly erratic rainfall due to environmental degradation causes untold hardship.  To compound matters, middle-men, employed by rich businessmen of neighbouring state lure unsuspecting poor farmers into a debt trap. They advance large sums of money to them by getting a bond signed which stipulates that they will repay the debt by working as bonded labourers in the brick kilns or in other hazardous activities. They are forced to migrate to the neighbouring states by the middle-men and their henchmen. They and their family members are exploited. When Saibani and Gulthu are at their wits end thinking how to cope with the impending disaster, they are shown the way by the official from agricultural department. He counselled them about soil testing, organic farming and use of vermi-compost. They were also briefed about the easy and simplified norms of agricultural credit at door step to Jan-Dhan account holders by the B.C.Agent (Business Correspondent Agent). Also they are told that henceforth the wages of MGNREGA work will be directly credited to their Jan-Dhan accounts and will not be pilfered by the contractors. Since at least one hundred days’ employment is guaranteed, they need not migrate as bonded labourers. This has put a new lease of life into them and kindled new hope.
