Days of the radio

'Nostalgia' is probably the first word we associate with 'radio'. A 5-minute break from the hassles of Friday traffic, a request show and a song for your lover, or that catchy jingle simply refusing to erase itself from memory – these are what make radio, RADIO!

So tune in and stay tuned...the transmission begins now...

THE PAST…
The late 1930s was a troubled time for humanity. With war looming, Hitler and his Nazi rhetoric had traumatised the conscience of the world even before the news of genocide and ethnical cleansing of millions of Jews came into the forefront. The second World War seemed inevitable and the conflict had already begun on various fronts. The geopolitical importance of the Indian Subcontinent was soon realised at all quarters and to counter the Axis propaganda different broadcasting stations were set up across India. External Services were introduced at stations in the wake of German propaganda directed towards Afghanistan, Iran and the Arab nations, areas that were also deemed strategically important. In the eastern side of the subcontinent, the 'Dhaka Dhwani Bistar Kendra' (Dhaka Audio Broadcasting Station) had operational beginnings on 16 December, 1939. Established in a rented house at Nazimuddin Road, (now Sheikh Borhanuddin College) the station was rather ill-equipped with the range of transmission being a meagre 20-25 miles by night and 30-45 miles by day. The Japanese occupation of Burma in 1942 was a constant threat to India, and East Bengal soon witnessed an influx of allied military personnel. The radio station --'Air Dhaka' as it was later renamed– even with the short air time, 5p.m. to 10p.m., seemed a refreshing addition to the lives of the soldiers that were stationed in the eastern side and also for the civilians, distressed at the uncertainties that they had to confront. After the end of hostilities of WWII, the station remained. In the days of pre-partition, performers from Calcutta (now Kolkata) would regularly feature in shows that were telecast in Dhaka. Many creative minds came and performed with great enthusiasm. Kazi Nazrul Islam, the rebel poet, had composed a musical programme 'Purbani' for transmission, which was widely recognised as one of his seminal works. Other significant show aired was a live drama, Sarat Chandra's immortal classic, Devdas, which featured the acclaimed actors Promothesh Barua and Jamuna Devi. Post-partition, radio once again became an essential tool for cultural propaganda. In an attempt to 'unify' the customs of both wings of Pakistan, Governor-General Mohammed Ali Jinnah before leaving Dhaka on his maiden visit, delivered a speech on radio reasserting his 'Urdu-only' policy. Like all the speeches made in his historic visit, this radio broadcast instilled a further urge for cultural freedom amongst the Bengalis, which eventually amalgamated into the Language Movement of 1952. Between 1947 and 1971, Bengalis as citizens of Pakistan, faced cultural domination in more ways than one. Religious bias was rampant and freedom of speech curtailed. In the mid-sixties, songs and poems of Tagore were banned, a step which received vehement protest in East Pakistan. Every time the powers that be presented with so-called ideologies of 'blending in', Bengalis preferred the notion of 'standing out.' As the Bengali identity was being rediscovered, artistes of East Pakistan promoted the pride and traditions of Bengal. Poetry sessions were telecast as were songs. Literary critiques were read out. It can be said that as a tool of professing nationalistic and cultural identity, the Dhaka transmission of Radio Pakistan boldly upheld the rich traditions of this land. During the Liberation War, radio played an important role in countering the propaganda of the West Pakistan and uniting the people of the erstwhile East. On 7 March, all officers and staffs closed down the transmission and left the static in protest of the decision to not allow transmission of Bangabandhu's historic speech. Airing resumed in the following morning when the authorities gave in and put the speech on air. After the midnight of 25 March, 1971 when the Pakistan armed forces started the brutal onslaught in East Pakistan, the brave broadcasters of the Chittagong station played a glorious role. After moving to several different locations in the days that followed, the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra finally settled in Kolkata, where the Mujibnagar government in exile was also stationed. The key person in organising the centre in its early stage was Belal Muhammad, a scriptwriter and artiste of Radio Pakistan. Several other liberation activists joined later. Two of the most popular programmes of Swadhin Bangla Betar were 'Charampatra' and 'Jallader Darbar'. Charampatra - a satirical composition, was planned by Abdul Mannan, a Member of National Assembly, and written in the typical Dhaka dialect by M R Akhter Mukul , who himself used to read it out. Narrated with scathing humour and a nationalist spirit, the broadcast helped keep the morale of the freedom fighters high. After the end of the War, Bangladesh Betar played an essential role in keeping families, stranded in Pakistan and Bangladesh, together. For those who were caught in the political stalemate, the voice of Sarker Kabiruddin, who conducted the programme 'Shubhechhya Bani' came as words of comfort and assurance. During the eight years of the autocratic regime media underwent a period of suffocation; a time when free speech was strangled, and restrictions and manipulation reigned over the media. Radio albeit in a different form, came towards keeping the people abreast of political developments. Media activists expressed their quest for freedom through the External Services from the likes of the BBC and the VOA. Through an impartial platform, journalists were able to spread the news of an autocracy and helped in the re-birth of democracy in Bangladesh.
THE PRESENT…
Over the last one decade, the industry has undergone sweeping transformations. With new private FM stations opening up in the mid-2000s, Dhakaiites were introduced to a new form of infotainment. In the matter of just a decade that followed, a significant number of stations became operational, some having a network wide enough to cover all major cities. RJs are some of the most popular celebrities of this generation. Their charismatic persona bridges the gap between musicians and other players in the entertainment industry - from actors, to models, to even sports commentators – and the masses. FM radios are essentially a part and parcel of the experiences shared by this generation, now exposed to wider cultures and traditions of the entire world. It would not be wrong to assume that unlike the decades in the past radio currently does not reflect society; possibly it is only our outlook that has changed. While most FM radio stations design their programmes to meet this growing demand, others have indeed ventured out into airing shows that address social issues, as well as providing enough content on entertainment. This not only acts as a variant in the schedule but also makes way for creating audience loyalty. One can also argue that the need for 'entertainment' gets buried under the barrage of social correctness. The recent debate over the language controversy has received missed reactions. While a segment of the audience prefer to adhere to the pomp of effortless 'code switching'– mixing of languages, others listeners consider it a threat to the cultural values. It can be argued that culture is in reality a fluid form, it changes with experiences shared by communities and it can be wrong to presume that one can still remain somehow trapped in the past and look forward at the same time. Although our values are for us to retain, culture should have its own flow and one must embrace innovation, which can often be the demand of the time. While most of the programmes are equally popular in Dhaka as they are in other parts of the country, in the farther regions the experience is still more personal, the chemistry, the radio experience somewhat more visible. In a time when copyright issues and intellectual property rights are a major concern for musicians and other entertainers, radio can and does encourage staying loyal to the industry. Over the years, the stations have been true to their conviction of encouraging Bengali music, and musicians of Bangladesh. With advent of mobile apps, most of these stations, despite transmitting in FM are now reaching a wider network of listeners. Bangladeshi expats can and do remain informed about the latest developments in the Dhaka scene. Another possible avenue that has been dawned by this IT revolution, is the introduction of foreign audiences to Bengali music.  Our traditions are rich and it rests with the current generation of musicians and entertainers to take it forward with their creativity and ingenuity.
THE FUTURE...

In the last few years, all of the world's popular information and broadcasting media have seen the initial forms of a grand transformation. With the availability of high-speed Internet, and of course the penetration of smartphones into the smallest of cell phone niches, this grand change has only hastened. The modern television is already seeing a decrease, as more and more people are flocking towards online streaming and downloads rather than be shackled to a channel schedule. Newspapers are also losing to the benefit of instant news on the Internet. It's only natural then, that radio may not command the same sort of popularity it held back in the 2000's. With most of our smartphones dusting the radio function under the rug, the average consumer is being pushed away from the standard towards more digital alternatives like online radio, podcasts and so on. Thinking about all the advancements that have been made in the field of communication media recently, it is not difficult to understand the cold shoulder towards radio. Communication mediums these days put a two-way connection between consumers and suppliers, putting the radio at a complete disadvantage. In order for radio to survive, it needs to be adopted into the technology and mind-set of the 21st century. Fortunately, plenty of headway has already been made which can be integrated to radios to make them relevant in this day and age. Do social media take away the comfort and unpredictability of radio? With some of the radio stations receiving millions of Likes on Facebook, it is understandable that radio can no longer do without the Internet. So the radio needs to do what it does best – adapt! The final destination for the radio will possibly be the same as it is for the television; convergence with the speed, response, and interactivity of online digital content. Gone will be the day of three different outlets for entertainment, and in its place will be one central platform, containing written articles accompanied by an audio and video piece. This convergence will ensure a more complete information delivery than the current established separate media. Over the last eight decades, radio has been our companion and surely it will not cease to exist in the near future. A propaganda machinery in times of war, to a promoter of Bengali culture in erstwhile Pakistan, and the narrator of the patriotic fervour of '71 - the radio in Bangladesh has played a vital role in moulding the perception of the people. It has fuelled cultural and political ideologies, reshaped the way we think and has been truthful to the present. The recent breed of private radio stations with waves signalled through the ether are now a testament to the changing scenario of our 21st century lives. Controversy aside, one cannot undermine the important role radio still plays in our lives. What the future holds for the radio can only be argued on. Surely, radio is as important now, as it was ever before.

Inspiration-How a Delhi Startup Is Turning Old Shipping Containers Into Eco-Friendly Schools and Buildings.

Learning can happen anywhere, some wise folks may say. Aadhan, a Delhi-based social enterprise founded by Nikhil Dugal and Akshat Goel, has interpreted the adage in a way you have never seen before.Aadhan builds classrooms — and a host of other spaces — from discarded shipping containers.

Aadhan is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘box,’ an apt name for the startup that unleashes the design potential of boxed spaces. Shipping containers are unlikely to come in mind when one thinks classrooms, or homes, but the Aadhan team considers it to have many advantages over traditional brick-and-mortar structures.

“We found that containers were already being used in India, as temporary offices for construction sites,” Nikhil says. But there were two major drawbacks. The shipping containers weren’t always old — some construction sites even had it built from scratch leading to a lot of energy consumption. They also did not take contamination measures, which was harmful for people living and working regularly in these spaces.”

Founded in 2015, Aadhan took an eco-friendly approach to container space keeping in mind everything the co-founders had learnt during their research.
The base materials for these spaces are shipping containers that have been retired from the sea

Moreover, using these containers helps to prevent industrial wastage. According to the Aadhan team, every container used prevents around 1.3 tonnes of Corten Steel from being scrapped, and uses only about 400KWh of energy. In comparison, scrapping an entire container uses about 8,000 kWh.

The company offers turnkey solutions to its customers, including design, fabrication, delivery and installation. Promoting complete sustainability, the company also enhances these spaces with solar energy or dry toilets on request.

Along with building spaces, Aadhan is expanding in other areas of sustainability measures too. “A lot of people who approach us are interested in organic farming and sustainable measures. We are now hoping to develop hydroponic farms in containers,’ says Nikhil.

The team makes sure that every container-turned-space is approved for habitation and meets the eco-friendly standards of the brand. Since its start in 2015, Aadhan has won a number of awards including the Award for Innovation in Social Entrepreneurship by the Impact Investors Council, India and Top 10 TATA Social Enterprise Challenge 2016.

The need for sustainable infrastructure is more acute than ever. Whether it’s for school or homes in challenging terrains, Nikhil and Akshay offer environment-friendly solutions. As Nikhil says, “It’s a small step, but it’s an important one.”

Inspiration-This young IAS officer is doing all that she can to ensure Kerala eats healthy.

This humble and dedicated young woman proves that the actions of a single individual are enough to bring about a change.

T.V. Anupama is a young IAS officer currently working as the Food Safety Commissioner in Kerala.

In her stint as the Food Safety Commissioner, she has conducted multiple raids across the state on those conducting the illegal trading of adulterated food items, and has also closed down multiple networks of several such traders.

It all began 15 months ago, when she carried out a raid on a famous food brand, with reports revealing that the products contained very high quantities of impermissible substances. After the raid, this product was banned. Following this, many more raids were carried out, which also revealed that the pesticide content in some fruits and vegetables was about 300 percent more than the permissible limit. Over the course of her stint, she has seized and produced about 6,000 samples of adulterated food in front of the court. There have also been around 750 cases filed in the court against traders.

With the Food Safety Department being started only in 2011, some time initially went into the setting up of the department and determining how it would function. Resources, office and a lot of other things needed to be set up along with the analysis and work that was going on. While discussing the same, Anupama told the Deccan Chronicle,
Many things happen on a day-to-day basis, but there’s no ready solution, because we haven’t done it before. We know things like harmful pesticides are used. But how do we go about it? People have vegetables on a daily basis. You can’t just ban them. We needed another kind of solution. Everyone was aware of the situation. We were only a part of it. We spoke about it, made presentations on it at meetings, but the rest was done by the government or public. People started becoming so aware, and we continued lifting samples (from check-posts and markets).Anupama also understood that different offences needed to be tackled in different ways. While speaking to Deccan Chronicle, she said,Then there was the banning of certain products. Only some got highlighted. There are certain kinds of food items that, under the act or by various medical reports, we know are unsafe. You should treat them in one way. Then there are certain habitual offenders you treat a different way.

The numbers, once released in the media, raised awareness among Keralites as well, and pushed them to think on whether it was better to depend on oneself rather than relying on others. Soon, the folks of Kerala started growing vegetables on their own, and this initiative was backed by the government as well. The government soon began to provide subsidies to those who wanted to begin growing their own vegetables. This has led to a massive drop of 70 percent in vegetable purchases from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Anupama had earlier become very famous in 2010, when she was ranked fourth in the Civil Services Examination. She has again shot to fame with the proactiveness and splendid work she has shown as a Food Safety Commissioner in the state. While talking about her popularity, she said,I haven’t been comfortable with the kind of attention all this has brought. I don’t use my personal FB page much. No Twitter and no verified official page. But at some point, you have to open up. It is mandatory that we put all orders on a public platform. Whenever some case of adulteration comes up, we put it up on the website. I didn’t expect this kind of response. The worst situation is when your privacy is encroached upon. My family was dragged into it. Luckily, they were very supportive. Most of the staff were too, as was the public.

The everlasting Radio

$

Amongst various modes of communication, radio has been there for almost a century now. The television, cable and the internet era came later and tried to fling the radio almost into oblivion. However radio survived this invasion and in fact there has been a resurgence of radio thanks to some of the ‘never to die’ old stations and also the introduction of FM radio and its rise throughout the world. Transmission over the frequency modulation bandwidth has resulted in radio becoming privatized, commercialized and nearly individualized for a particular area or a particular community. With variety of programs presented in the most informal way as well as the live transmission advantage, radio has reemerged as a liked medium by the masses and same can be judged by the ever increasing number of FM stations being granted annually.

Kashmir is a place where a sizeable population works sitting at home, be it a carpet weaver, a shawl artisan, a papier-mâché worker or many such like. Moreover many from the farming and fruit sector work for a particular time of the day after which they get to sit idle. The limited working hours and the overall conditions prevalent in the valley make most Kashmiri’s get back home quite early and cling to some form of media entertainment. Many of these especially TV and radio are a must to kill the long evening hours and also to keep people abreast about the happenings in the state. The frequent power cuts, cuts down on the TV viewership. Radio being handy and the cheapest means of communication is liked by many. So most Kashmiris while sitting or relaxing or commuting for duties do listen to radio very eagerly.

There are a number of radio stations airing in Kashmir. We do have the ever eternal Radio Kashmir that has stood the test of time in being very popular amongst the masses. Radio Kashmir has been continuously broadcasting from the city center since its inception and even briefly was aired from the hills during the floods of 2014. It has been pivotal in bringing Kashmiris abreast with news, views, day to day affairs, drama, poetry and cinema. It has kept Kashmiriyat and Kashmiri language alive despite all the odds. It has been a medium to bring problems faced by the general public into limelight and get noticed and solved by the government. It has been the medium through which all the famous writings and writers have been introduced to the common man which otherwise was not possible. Those famous programs nobody would/will miss. Be it Zoondab, Ghami Bhaiu key liye, Monday drama, Pragash, Khat key liye Shukriya, Shaharbeen, Payaami Subah, etc . Radio Kashmir has been entertaining, educative, concerning and informative.

It has withstood bureaucratic and political interference and can claim to be apolitical to a large extent barring the news that has some governmental restricts. A sister concern is the previously called Vivdh Bharthi station (now renamed FM 102.6) which has most of the programs aired as decided by the All India Radio (AIR) and few programs like Sheehij Boen, Hello Bazme Khawatein, Alamdar, Morning show, Hello Doctor, Naawahe Subhu done regionally. Despite the present dynamic officials in charge of its affairs who are trying their best to bring in better and innovative programs, Radio Kashmir being a under Prasar Bharti has its limitations of progress in its constituents and horizons.

There are 2 FM stations besides FM 102.6, one of them FM 103.5 broadcasts from the Radio Kashmir division for 7- 8 hours per day and later continues as FM Gold through most of the day. It has wonderful array of live phone in, SMS or mail based programs to offer among which worth mentioning are Dhadkan, Gil mil Sitaray, Muje kuch kahna hain (public grievances) and radioactive. Another FM channel is the now famous FM 92.7 which has been on for last few years and has redefined and reinvented radio because of new budding and live on air radio jockeys. However it has more of a commercial tinge and is more filmy in its entirety except for some duration in the morning and evening during which it brings various public issues to fore and tries to get the answers from the concerned officials. But other than that it is a commercial venture and has more of filmy songs and musical stories to offer.

Noteworthy and praise worthy I will put an FM channel (more of a community radio) from Jammu which have besides its commercial potential being very successful in keeping Kashmiriyat alive and the Kashmiri pandits united in their language and being. Radio Sharda FM 90.4 has been there for some years now and has been a success. Kashmiri pandits have put up a good show and have relived various golden programs that were aired previously from Radio Kashmir. Dramas, new Kashmiri songs, poetic programs and informative bulletins are aired so that the community is well kept within the framework of Kashmiriyat. Also the commercial aspects of the channel bring its own rewards.
Because of the security concerns and the uneasiness that they can bring to the government the idea of setting up community radio stations is not possible in near future in the valley. However a new FM channel on the same pattern as Radio Sharda could be launched in Kashmir to add on the already famous and successful Radio Kashmir. This could help us to bring back many a miss programs from Radio Kashmir and also allow new talent to showcase their worth. This would be a platform for bringing up people problems, their solutions and redressal and also have unrestricted talent being discovered which otherwise is dormant. This could be done by many stalwarts who have retired from radio and television; they can come up with their loads of experience and expertise. People like Ghulam Nabi Khayal, Ruksana Jabeen, Bashir Arif, Abdul Rehman Bhat, Ghulam Hassan Gamgeen, Mohd Roshan Khayal, Shamshad Kralwari who have vast experience in Radio broadcasting along with luminaries like Prof Rehman Rahi, Mohd Zameer, Naseem Shifai and Rafiq Raaz, to name a few, can help in creating such an opportunity. Of course they will have to abide by many a restrictions that would be imposed by the authorities as it may be deemed to be too independent. Many a successful businessmen and media houses can help these stalwarts in this venture. With GK communications already spearheading the print media, their coming into the radio and television is long overdue and I can say without any doubt that this will be a service they can render successfully. And for that matter any big business house can start this endeavor of great service and commercial potential. Let us try to come up with our very own new FM Radio Saada on the same lines as Radio Sharda so well done by our pandit brothers.

After 'Circus', Doordarshan to revive 'Malgudi Days', 'Fauji' and other iconic shows

National broadcaster seeks sponsors to re-run top '80s serials, including Hum Log, Wagle Ki Duniya and SRK-starrer Fauji.A few days after the Indian government's autonomous public service broadcaster, Doordarshan, began airing Shah Rukh Khan's highly-popular 1989 television series, Circus, the channel is set to revisit archives and bring back their popular shows. Doordarshan Director General, Supriya Sahu, informs hitlist that the national broadcaster's celebrated series, including Malgudi Days, Hum Log, Buniyaad and Wagle Ki Duniya, will be aired again, after almost three decades.

"We receive several requests for re-runs of Doordarshan's iconic shows. So, while we are working on a face-lift of the channel by bringing in fresh content, we also want to give our audience a peek into the past, so that they can relive those beautiful memories," says Sahu. She adds that a prime half-hour weekend slot is being considered to benefit from the increased viewership. "We are also looking at getting fresh sponsors for the iconic shows."One might question the relevance of serials dating back to an era that's at odds with the present. But, Sahu asserts that the classics continue to resonate with the current generation. "These shows had attracted family audience in the past and are still fresh in people's minds. Even if you watch them today, they don't feel dated."

With platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime making content from across the border available at one's fingertips, is digitisation of the national broadcasting channel inevitable? Sahu refuses to divulge details but says that the team is in the process of amending the archival tapes to suit modern technology. "People should have access to good content, and for it, we have decided to go digital. As a public broadcaster, we also want to preserve the cultural heritage," she says.

Doordarshan classics set for revival

Fauji: The 1989 SRK- starrer, which marked the actor's television debut, followed the training of Indian Army commandos.Malgudi Days: The 1986 series, based on the works of Indian writer RK Narayan, found its inspiration in the daily life of the common man. It was sketched by acclaimed cartoonist, RK Laxman Hum Log: The 1984 saga of Basesar Ram and his family revolved around the struggles of a middle-class family Wagle Ki Duniya: The 1988 comedy was based on characters created by RK Laxman and his muse — the common man

Perfect wavelength - Dr. Vageesh, musician-musicologist, traces his career with Akashvani

- An article in 'The Hindu' by Ranjani Govind

It was good to see Dr. K. Vageesh receive the Ganakala Bhushana Award at the 47th Karnataka Ganakala Parishath proceedings recently in Bengaluru. The 62-year-old musician-musicologist-composer committed to his task at the helm of Akashvani for 36 years came up with an informative lec-dem as he explained the nuances of the much-debated Abheri and Karnataka Devagandari.

“Only a musician, who is also a musicologist can demonstrate such finenuances,” said Dr. R.K. Padmanabha, president of the Ganakala Parishath after honouring Dr. Vageesh with the Ganakala Bhushana Award. “Vageesh, who is integral to the much-appreciated AIR auditions, has studied, sung, reflected and worked with the grammar of music for more than four decades. The Parishath is happy to recognise his lifetime achievements,” announced Mr. Padmanabha.

Dr. Krishna Vageesh, top-grade artist of AIR, now on an extension as the Deputy Director General (Music) Prasar Bharati, New Delhi, was born in 1954 in Mysore. Belonging to a family obsessed with classical melody for generations, he also boasts a lineage of love for Sanskrit, the Vedas and divinity attached to temple histories.

Music was deep-rooted with grandfather Srirangachar rubbing shoulders with M.D. Ramanathan as his classmate. Vageesh also took guidance from Tiger Varadachari. “M.D. Ramanathan visited us at Kathwadipura Agrahara in Mysore, a traditionally erudite neighbourhood where we were brought up. He once heard me sing the Kamalamba Navavarana kriti and had prophesied that I would make it big,” reminisces Vageesh.

Mysore has always been a vibrant cultural hub. “The echoes of naada and Veda in the Agrahara where I grew up still linger in my ears,” says Vageesh.

Three awards

Vageesh’s entry into Akashvani was just by chance. “I was a senior chemist with SKF and was frequently recording for Akashvani. Y.S.K. Rao, then Director, who listened to me on one such occasion, said, ‘Why don’t you apply for a job in Akashvani?’ Soon I was selected through UPSC as Programme Executive at New Delhi Akashvani in 1980. I was put in charge of Yuvavani,” recalls Dr. Vageesh. “I am grateful to stalwarts such as veena Doreswamy Iyengar and R.K. Srikantan, who encouraged me to be part of radio broadcasting. I bagged three annual awards for my musical productions, Navras, Silence in Music and Haathon Ka Tharaana,” he says.

Although his aunt H.S. Mahalakshmi of the Tiger Varadachari school was his formal guru, this gold medallist in M.A. (Music) expanded his horizon with guidance from faculty stalwarts such as Prof. Ramarathnam, Gowrie Kuppuswamy and R. Vishweshwaran. “They helped me reach where I am today,” says Vageesh. “I used to observe all the old-time greats too and that included their mannerisms. I loved imitating them and even adopted some of their techniques in my presentations,” he says. This analytical mind helped me pursue a doctorate in Dikshitar compositions.”

Vageesh was a winner all along, from music competitions in school and college, to State and reputed music organisations such as the Bangalore Gayana Samaja, Karnataka Ganakala Parishath and the Music Academy in Chennai. Winning the AIR competition earned him a B-grade status as a youth artist.

Vageesh considers his stint as the Assistant Station Director in charge of the music section at the Directorate a precious opportunity as he watched stalwarts such as M.S. Gopalakrishnan, Emani Sankara Sastry, Madirimangalam Ramachandran and T.K. Govinda Rao conduct their orchestral productions. The years as the Deputy Director, National Programmes and Sangeeth Sammelan later, was a huge learning curve as he discussed the orchestrated pieces with sitar maestro Ravishankar, Vijaya Raghava Rao and Anil Biswas.

Vageesh’s phase as a composer began 15 years ago, with a kriti in raga Ranjani. He has to his credit 100 compositions as varnams, kritis and tillanas. “I have a few CDs of my compositions too,” says Vageesh, who conducts Tyagaraja aradhana at his residence in Bengaluru every year.
