To add teeth to the disaster preparedness, Assam Police Radio Organisation (APRO) has decided to fall back on the use of amateur radio, also known as HAM radio. The APRO is already working on a plan to regroup trained HAM radio operators once again after the Government of India lifted the ban on its use recently. At a seminar organised by APRO on ‘Restoration of Communication in a Disaster Scenario - Role of First Responder’ here today, Director General of Assam Police Mukesh Sahay opined that the use of conventional and simple gadgets should never be done away with completely as they are easy to handle in times of crisis.

“Disaster has increased both in number and gravity. Therefore, preparing for the ‘unknown unknowns’ is very crucial from the perspective of disaster preparedness, especially when all the communication channels might run out of order. Trained HAM radio operators could come in handy at such times,” Sahay said.Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Kula Saikia dwelt at length on the significance of developing infrastructure independent communication system, which may prove to be the most effective and the only medium of communication at times of crisis.

“When all the conventional setups run out of order at the time of disaster, it is the infrastructure-free communication that may prove to be crucial,” Saikia said.On HAM radio, he urged the APRO to regroup the system.S Ram Mohan, Director, National Institute of Amateur Radio, Hyderabad, who played an active role in a number of post-disaster mitigation exercises in India, said that inter-agency cooperation is an unavoidable proposition when it comes to disaster preparedness. He stressed the need for a well defined command structure, which makes the operation swift.“Good communication and informed coordination are quintessential,” he added.

The APRO is already working on a plan to regroup trained HAM radio operators once again after the Government of India lifted the ban on its use recently.

Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams are two female astronauts of Indian origin who made the nation proud. Joining the club is Dr. Shawna Pandya, an Indo-Canadian astronaut, who has been a part of various on ground space missions in the United States.

32-year-old Shawna is immensely gifted. She's a talented author, a general physician, and also an international Taekwondo champion, apart from being a space scientist. She also took training in Muay Thai from a Navy seal. Muay Thai is a professional combat sport that originated in Thailand. Speaking with Edmonton Sun, Pandya said, "Since I was a kid, I loved space, I loved the stars. So this kind of is a realisation of a lifelong dream." She had previously interned at the Johnson Space Centre in NASA.

Shawna graduated from the University of Alberta, doing her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in neuroscience. Later on, she did her masters in space sciences from the International Space University in France and MD in medicine from the University of Alberta. She enrolled herself in medical school and the space programme simultaneously, considering the latter a backup option. She had training in speaking French, Russian and Spanish.

With her roots in Mumbai, she visited the city to see her family and she has been giving motivational talks at the local hospitals, speaking with doctors and practising students. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she said, "I met students from Lilavatibai Podar High School and the questions they asked me were brilliant, right from zero-gravity experiences to outer space. When I talked to medical students, I realised they have the zeal to venture out but aren’t always aware of the ways in which they can. All we need is to get acquainted with everyday developments in science, be resilient, and always try to achieve something bigger."

Shawna also had training in neurosurgery for some time but however, she does possess her medical license in general medicine. In a recent Facebook post, she said, "I look forward to continuing my work as a physician, speaker and citizen-scientist astronaut and aquanaut, and just as importantly, look forward to continuing my work with outreach and education about these projects."

OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE - OM PRAKASH

$

Om Prakash (19 December 1919 – 21 February 1998) was an Indian character actor. He was born in Lahore, now Pakistan, as Om Prakash Chibber. He used to play the role of Kamla in the stage play by the famous Dewan Mandir Natak Samaj Koliwada. He joined All India Radio in 1937 on a monthly salary of Rs 25. He was known as “Fateh Din”, a radio personality and his programmes made him popular all over Lahore and Punjab.

He was regaling people at a wedding one day when the well-known film-maker Dalsukh Pancholi spotted him and asked to see him in his Lahore office. Pancholi gave Prakash his first break as an actor in the film Daasi. He was paid only Rs 80 but the film earned him the kind of recognition that would give him a means of livelihood for a lifetime. It was his first major role; he had played a bit role in Sharif Badmash, a silent film. He followed his good work in Daasi with Pancholi’s Dhamki and Aayee Bahar.
Soon after the Partition he came to Delhi and then to Bombay (now Mumbai). Baldev Raj Chopra noticed his talent when he was a film journalist and critic; he urged Prakash to carry on with his acting career. He was sure Om Prakash had the talent to prove himself as a versatile actor. The actor had to face some struggle initially. He got his first break as a villain in a film called Lakhpati. It won him acclaim and got him roles in films like Lahore, Char Din and Raat Ki Rani. It was during this phase in his career that he did Azaad with Dilip Kumar, Sargam with Raj Kapoor and Miss Mary, Bahar, Pehli Jhalak, Asha and Manmauji with Kishore Kumar followed by Howrah Bridge with Ashok Kumar and then Tere Ghar Ke Samne with Dev Anand. He was marked out for his performance in both films in spite of the presence of powerful star personas like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Dev Anand. He had developed a style of his own, a style which was going to take him places, make him a big name in the world of film entertainment for the next forty years.

Om Prakash soon became a household name. He was good in almost every character he played. He was the comedian, the family man burdened with problems, the munshi, the alcoholic fallen on bad days because of the evil designs of the villain, the nagged husband, the old man in love, the wily politician and the big brother with a heart of gold. He played an assortment of characters with the same ease and had some of the best directors vying for him every time they had a role which they felt only he could play. His role in Gopi is still remembered, some analysts think he has overshadowed Dilip Saab.

Om Prakash was a versatile actor with 307 films to his credit. One can never forget his comic performances in Howrah Bridge, Dus Lakh (he won his first major award for this performance), Pyar Kiye Jaa, Padosan, Sadhu Aur Shaitaan, Dil Daulat Duniya, Chupke Chupke, Namak Halaal, Gol Maal and Chameli Ki Shaadi. His performance as Dilip Kumar’s elder brother in Gopi gave his career new impetus. He proved that he could play mature roles with equal ease and depth: Films like Chacha Zindabad, Khandan, Haryali Aur Raasta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Pati Patni, Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare, Mere Hamdam Mere Dost, Annadata, Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati, Doli, Chirag, Amar Prem, Aankh Micholi, Ek Hasina Do Diwane, Anuraag, Zanjeer, Sagina, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Loafer, Roti, Julie, Khushboo, Lawaaris, Bandish, Sharaabi and Chameli Ki Shaadi. Om Prakash had a special rapport with Amitabh Bachchan and both worked in many successful films spanning from Zanjeer to Sharaabi.Prakash produced many films Sanjog (1961), Jahan Ara (1964) and Gateway of India (1957).

Om Prakash suffered massive heart attack in his home and rushed to Lilavati Hospital situated in Mumbai where he suffered another heart attack and went into a coma from which he never came out. He died on 21 February 1998.

PB Parivar offers tribute to this great actor and ex AIR employee from bottom of our heart.

Inspiration:At 15, She Invented Sustainable Wood. Now, Bisman Deu Promotes Entrepreneurship Among Girls

$

In a world with growing environmental concerns, wood is a valuable and scarce resource. As the need for low-cost, eco-friendly infrastructures rises, a bevy of initiatives have emerged that seek to offer sustainable solutions for varied needs for green architecture. Bisman Deu is one such inventor-entrepreneur who invented a new variety of sustainable wood from rice waste. What makes Bisman’s case noteworthy is the fact that the girl from Chandigarh was only 15 years old when she founded GreenWood.

Bisman’s invention turned the spotlight on her when she was still a school-going teenager. Born in India, she spent a few years in England before returning to India with her parents. She graduated from Strawberry Fields High School in Chandigarh, and is now back in England where she studies economics, politics and international studies at the University of Warwick. Many a great idea stems from real life experiences and Bisman’s tryst with sustainable wood started out on similar lines.

Bisman developed a prototype of the recycled wood, combining husk with resin and compressing the mix into particle boards. The invention earned her a place in Unicef’s state of the world’s children report in 2015. Green Wood also took home the prize for winning idea at the Social Innovation Relay, an international competition that encourages social innovations among school students. Continuing to develop the wood to this day, Bisman hopes it will offer low-cost building solutions for people. “GreenWood makes me want to make a difference in the hope of transforming thousands if not millions of lives,” she says. Today, Bisman divides her time between academics and promoting entrepreneurship among students, particularly girls.

She founded a campaign, titled Colour the World Pink, which promotes young girls to take up leadership opportunities and chart their own path to success. “Being fortunate enough to make my voice heard and having interacted with entrepreneurs from across the world, I realized, there is a huge problem of missing women in the corporate world,” she says.

Taking note of the great disparity, she has taken it upon herself to inculcate an entrepreneurial spirit in young girls and let them know that they too can make it to the top. Pink is often associated with stereotypical depiction of the feminine, but Bisman reclaims the colour to assert independent thought and action.

As part of the campaign, she travels to schools and engages with the student through her own experiences of innovation and encourages them to take up similar initiatives. She recently organized an event in collaboration with Blue Ocean Technology, inviting a CFO to speak about the need for soft skills, and holds bake sales and lemonade sales to give the students a hands-on experience of running a business.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme. This is the 29th episode of his broadcast, which comes a day ahead of the crucial fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly election. In today's address, Mr Modi spoke on a variety of issues ranging from the ISRO's historic record-breaking launch of 104 satellites on a single rocket, the successful ballistic missile interceptor, the need and importance of science, agronomy among others. He also spoke about the promotion and popularity of digital transactions. Mr Modi often invites suggestions and comments from citizens - which he also incorporates in his radio address. Today's address was broadcast by All India Radio, Doordarshan and streamed on NDTV.com.

Here are the highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' speech:
  • Basant Panchami, Holi and Shivratri promotes brotherhood and peace.
  • Winter is on its way out and Basant (spring) has just started.
  • I would like to thank people who give me a lot of suggestions and comments ahead of the Mann Ki Baat speech.
ISRO Satellite Mission
  • Many people are not aware of ISRO and they want me to tell them about it.
  • 15 February, 2017, is a proud day in India's history.
  • After the success of Mangalyaan, the 104 satellite launch on a single rocket is another feather in ISRO's cap.
  • India has created a world record. Also, it was the PSLV's 38th successful mission
  • The mission was cost-effective and efficient, which has become a marvel for the entire world.
  • Cartosat-2D is India's satellite.
  • It will also help my farmer friends.
  • I congratulate ISRO's scientists on behalf of countrymen.
Ballistic Missile Interceptor
  • I have also been asked about India's success in the field of defence.
  • We have successfully tested the Ballistic Interceptor Missile.
  • It is a very important development in the field of defence.
  • Only four or five countries have this capability and our scientists have achieved this.
  • It can defeat an enemy missile in outer space itself.
Importance of Science
  • The spirit of inquiry has played a major role in scientific and human development.
  • It is a never ending quest.
  • Humans are continuously unraveling the secrets of the universe.
  • I have often stressed upon the need of scientific temper among youth. Our country needs more scientists.
  • Mahatma Gandhi said, "No science has dropped from the sky in a perfect form. All science is developed through experience."
  • He also praised the role of scientists.
  • The biggest contribution of science is in satisfying human need.
  • During the 14th Pravasi Bharati Divas, a competition was organised on socially useful innovations.
  • An App was displayed for fishermen. Our fishermen could locate the best zone of fish, wind conditions, tides etc through this App.
  • Sometimes, problems highlight the importance of innovation.
  • In 2005, Mumbai witnessed floods and during such times, the poor are affected.
  • Two scientists designed houses which are only flood resistant but protects from water-borne diseases as well.
  • Our society is becoming technology driven. Stress is now being laid on digital transactions.
Digital Economy
  • People are moving towards digital currency.
  • The Lucky Grahak and Digidhan Vyapari schemes are very successful. These events have turned digital transactions into a movement.
  • Rewards worth more than 150 crore have been distributed.
  • Over 100 people have received 1 lakh rupees. People from all sections are participating in this movement.
  • Winners included 15 year olds to 65 year olds.
  • A winner told me that he his Rs. 1,000 reward to an old lady whose house was gutted in a fire.
  • Many such people have become beneficiaries as well as ambassadors of these schemes.
  • I urge the citizens to be the ambassadors of this movement.
  • It has a major role to eradicate corruption and black money.
  • Those associated with it are soldiers of anti-corruption cadre.
  • On 14 April, when the scheme ends, it will be Dr Ambedkar's birthday. To commemorate his birthday, let us teach at least 125 people to use the BHIM App.
Agriculture
  • Agriculture has a great role in our economy.
  • Our farmers have worked hard and we have record foodgrain production this year.
  • We have over 2,700 lakh tonnes of foodgrains this year. I thank my farmer friends.
  • Farmers deserve a special mention. Pulses are important source of protein and 2,900 lakh hectare of land was used to cultivate pulses.
  • They responded to my call with record pulse production.
  • I congratulate them for their service.
Cleanliness Drive
  • The cleanliness drive is gaining momentum. Recently, a water and sanitation programme was organised in Warangal. Senior officials of states attended the programme. Toilet pit emptying exercises were held and houses were cleaned. Twin pit toilets may be reused and they are convenient to use and clean.
  • One feels no psychological barrier to clean them.
  • The exercise was covered extensively.
  • What we consider as waste, it is important as compost and fertiliser.
  • We will extensively stress upon cleanliness in the month of March.
Differently-Abled Citizens
  • When a citizen does something amazing, the entire nation feels proud.
  • Our differently-abled athletes made us proud in Rio.
  • Our blind cricketers of India beat Pakistan and became world champion.
  • I believe differently-abled are determined and confident. We can learn a lot from them.
Women In India
  • Women are also making India proud, whether in science or sports.
  • Our women won the Rugby-7 tournament.
  • March 8 is International Women's Day. Our Beti bachao, Beti Padhao is today, more than a scheme. It is a mass movement. Many have joined this mission. A positive change is seen in the mindsets.
  • The movement has taken many forms. We will celebrate Women's Day with the spirit that women are the strength of society and are equal in every sphere.
  • You actively take part in Mann Ki Baat and I get to learn a lot from you.
  • I get feedback from grassroots and I thank you for it. Thank You.
