Inspiration-How I Became a Published Author at the Age of Eight.

11-year-old Adhya Bhatnagar writes about her experience of self-publishing a book named My Little World – a compilation of her poetry.

I am Adhya, author of My Little World – a compilation of my poems published when I was only eight years old. In my book you will find questions like, “Who painted the morning skies? And those pretty butterflies?” and “What if we had more than two hands and legs?”The book got rave reviews from magazines and newspapers. One review says, “If you want to understand the wonderful world of kids then My Little World by Adhya Bhatnagar will give you a good glimpse. Here you will find the imagination of a child which will introduce you to various facts of life including bulbs, butterflies, dolls as well as appreciation for food cooked by mothers”.

Children enjoy my poems and they also suggest more subjects. Adults ask, “How could you write such poetry at such a young age? How do you get ideas for poems?” They think writing poetry is tough. It needs imagination, rich vocabulary and also good expressions. How I learnt all these things?
Today, let me tell you how it all happened–I am a home-schooled kid. So I study at home. One day my parents donated our TV to an orphanage. Even without TV, it was fine in the mornings because I study, paint, do Bharatnatyam practice, and other activities. But evenings became dull, because other kids were going to school, tuitions, and then did homework. No one played in the evenings.

I was cribbing about it one day when my father gave me Horton Hatches An Egg! – a hilarious poetry book by Dr. Seuss. It’s about Horton, the elephant who sits on an egg to hatch it. It fired my imagination and I became an avid reader. Authors like Sudha Murthy and Ruskin bond became a part of my life. I became an ardent fan of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Reading these authors enhanced my vocabulary and imagination.Dr Seuss’s funny rhymes had an interesting effect on me. When I spoke to people, sentences came out rhyming. Like — “Maa! Your daughter wants water! Not full glass, only a quarter!” One day I asked my mom, “Isn’t that like a poem?” She smiled and gave me a notebook to jot these things down.

After a few days, my grandfather, a published author himself, visited us in Mumbai. He read my notebook and blessed me, “Beta, keep on writing, you too can write a book.”
His words sparked a desire. Then I sat down to write poems everyday. Soon I had a collection of many poems and I thought my book could be published now. But that was not the end!

My father explained, “Not every poem can be published, a good poem should make you laugh, feel sad, or amused.” Together we selected only 12 poems. My mother was a pillar of support during this time. One day I was wondering how many different kinds of greens are there in nature, and she suggested, “Why don’t you write a poem about it?” My questions about a wall clock became a poem about time. All my queries and observations were now poetry subjects. After some months, I had about 100 poems. We chose 40 for the book. Then I made illustrations and puzzles to accompany the poems.

And after some time, there it was – the book! I felt so happy when I held it in my hand. I am 11 now and I am researching and writing a book about inter-planetary journey. I also dream of opening my own school. My friends often lament about their homework and the burden of exams and tests. In my school, studies will be a joy for children. They will learn the importance of money, caring for the nature, yoga and pranayam. There will be exams too, but these will be fun; there will be no need to rote learn each and every sentence. They will have freedom to write according to their own opinion.
I am saving my pocket money to make that school. I think books are great gifts to us children. So, I also run a free library every Sunday where I share my large collection of books with my friends.

So this was my writing journey
How I went on a writing spree
How I wrote a book of poetry.

From watching TV to reading books
Illustrating my own poems
And writing in my own little nook
Finally it is here, my own little book!

I made my own little world
And my dream came true.
I quite enjoyed the ride
I hope you did too!

Inspiration-How an Old Age Home Is Fueling the Educational Dreams of Needy Children.

$

They may not have much for themselves but that hasn’t stopped the residents of Anandam Old Age Home in Chennai from giving back to society in every way they can. Here’s their inspiring story.
The twinkle in her eyes brightens and a smile plays on her lips as the elderly woman sees the students sitting around her with open books and unwavering concentration. The elderly woman is their teacher and one of the residents of the Anandam Trust’s Old Age Home at Gangai Nagar in Kallikuppam, Chennai. The students are poor, deserving children from the vicinity, who require extra coaching, and the venue is the free Education Centre run by the trust. This is the story of the senior citizens from this old age home, who may have come from needy backgrounds themselves but believe in sharing their knowledge, skill and effort with those who need it the most.

They are like the grandchildren that we don’t have,” says Mrs. Savitri about the children she teaches. She had been a teacher before coming to Anandam as a resident. “When a child who used to score around 30%, scores about 70% to 90%, the sense of love, satisfaction and achievement that we experience cannot be described in words. Some of them even top the class,” she says with a touch of pride.

“These children are not only showing immense progress, but are also developing a grandparent-grandchild like bond with their teachers,” says Bhageerathy Ramamurthy, Founder Trustee of Anandam. “The idea to start this Education Centre came from our resident, Mrs. V.Parvati, lovingly called Aachi amma, who expressed a wish to coach young children, as a means of giving back in some way to society.”
Parvati or Aachi amma, a trained former teacher, happily exclaims about the direction the Education Centre has taken: “From seven students, the number has now increased to 150!”
They are also given nutritious snacks and drinks, so that they do not start their classes on an empty stomach.
The Anandam Old Age Home is unique in many aspects. The construction of its present premises began in April 2005 with 60 women volunteers executing a spectacular Kolam (rangoli) patterned as a Kancheepuram silk saree and covering an area of 9320 sq.ft. The Rangoli won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records and brought much needed attention to the efforts of the trust.

“Anandam is the culmination of our vision to provide a completely free home for destitute and helpless senior citizens,” says Bhageerathy. “All the residents neither have children to take care of them, nor any source of income.”

In 2015, when parts of Chennai witnessed devastating floods, the residents wanted to do whatever they could for the stranded people. They cooked, packed and distributed 1500 food packets, everyday for 12 days, to the flood affected areas. Recognising their efforts for flood relief, the senior citizens were given the Real Heroes 2016 Award by Adding Smiles Media Ltd.

Apart from their zeal for social work, they also believe in staying active. Everything in this old age home is managed by them with enthusiasm, including jobs like cooking..We are trying to fulfill all their long standing wishes and have arranged for music, stitching and yoga classes apart from developing a garden in our own premises,” says Bhageerathy, who was named the Best Social Worker by the Department of Social Service and Noon Meals Scheme of Tamil Nadu, in 2012.“Our residents are our strength,” Bhageerathy says. “They are old. They have no one to call their own. But they live here like a big joint family. Their love and affection can be seen and experienced by everyone who visits our home.”

First International Television Drama Festival in joint collaboration of Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, Prasar Bharati & the Govt of Telangana happened in Hyderabad. Hon'ble Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu graced the occasion. De- Talibanised Afghanistan, among many other countries, mostly Muslim dominated, participated with zeal & joy. Uzbekistan impressed me & those sitting in my listening range most. But the fact remains that India is ahead in the quality & perfection apart from variety of dance forms. Many countries confuse folk-rendition with dance. It was a memorable evening for reasons more than one. Kudos Supriya Sahu ji, Prasar Bharati Parivar & Javad Mutagi Sahib.

Inspiration- You Won’t Believe How Simple It Is to Make Your Home Go Solar Once We Bust These Common Myths!

$
0
0

India is one of the sunniest countries in the world, but the adoption of solar power generation by the common man has been very slow. This is in part fuelled by many doubts, often based on groundless misconceptions and myths. With more than 5,000 trillion kWh of solar radiation, and 320 sunny days in a year, India has an abundance of potential for solar power. The Government of India has envisioned a target of generating 100 GW of solar energy, out of the peak demand of 320 GW, by 2022. It hopes to generates 40 GW of such solar energy from residential rooftops, i.e. the end consumer.

To push the uptake of solar energy amongst semi-urban and urban masses, a slew of benefits & incentives are being provided to the end consumers.

1. Central Financial Assistance: Up to 30 % capital subsidy provided by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India on total capital outlay.

2. State Financial Assistance: 15-60 % capital subsidy provided by different State Governments as per their policy on total capital outlay.

3. Net Metering: Produce solar energy from your roof directly in the day and relay excess or unused energy back to your grid against energy credits, to be settled on a yearly basis.

4. Generation-Based Incentive (GBI): State-specific GBI benefits are being provided to the tune of Rs. 1-2/unit of solar energy produced.

Despite such incentives, uptake for solar energy infrastructure by the end-consumer is limited. People presume there are several complexities with going solar, and also have several apprehensions and doubts, based on common myths and misconceptions. However, many of these apprehensions are unfounded, with little basis in reality.Going solar is expensive, and there exists no mechanism for funding or financing.

There are various financing options available to the end-consumer through private and public financial arms. Public and Private sector banks such as the State Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, HDFC, and ICICI, to name a few, finance solar energy systems under “home loans/home improvement loans” category, at favourable interest rates of up to 12 %. There are also other institutions in the market that specialise in solar debt financing of up to 70 % of the project cost at 11-14 % interest rates. The key is to ensure that your solar system installer is MNRE-approved, and uses components tested by reputed Indian and international laboratories.Solar Panels take up roof space and render it useless for other purposes

This is a very common concern. A typical 1 kW system needs about 100 sq. ft. of area. The most standard size in a solar plant is 5 kW, and the average roof size of an Indian roof is 900 sq. ft., which means a 5 kW will use up more than 55 % of your roof space. The solution to this is building super-elevated structures from ground or roof level with an elevation of 8-10 ft. on top of which the solar panel mechanism can be put in place. This frees up roof space and does away with the problem of shadowing from buildings that are taller than the client’s own roof.

As per the Central Government’s order, and special order by most of the States, authorities have amended the building by-laws to allow for such elevations for erection of solar systems. In totality, super structures increase the energy generation efficiency, and even leave the roof free for gardening, barbecue, and other outdoor activities.Solar Panels only produce about 80 % of their rated output

This is usually because the solar panels are unable to convert all the incidental sunlight that falls onto them into usable energy. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Hence, not all the solar panels mounted atop your roof get sunlight throughout the day. The solution to this is using a mounting structure for your solar panels that moves with the sun’s movement. We all know how a sunflower moves with the sun’s movement. You can programme this kind of motion into your solar panel frame. This uses an auto-tracking-based system with an actuator and hydraulic motor, as seen in the video below. Auto-tracking-based systems increase the efficiency of any standard solar system by up to 22 % by replicating the sun’s movement.

You need to clean solar panels every 15-20 days, making them a highly labour-intensive asset

Bird droppings, pollution, and moisture are the worst enemies of solar panels and systems. They can reduce a system’s performance if you don’t wash or wipe the panels every 7-10 days. This can be tedious, especially when the panels are atop an elevated structure of 8-10 ft. (like the one proposed earlier). The best solution is installing a timer-based auto-cleaning system that works like a drip system. It automatically cleans your solar panels every day for 15-20 mins. One would think this would waste plenty of water, and that’s normally true. But, you can use a U-shaped funnel-based piping mechanism to collect the water in one place. The mechanism later discharges the water into a tank for other household cleaning activities, or rainwater harvesting. In fact, by covering your roof with solar panels, the overall heat in the house reduces. This saves on AC bills, and keeps the house a little cooler.

As is evident, going solar is a lot easier and more beneficial than people commonly understand. With the multiple assistance options available in the market, going solar is now a great idea. It’s time to put the abundant sunshine in India to good use!

5 Doordarshan shows from 90s we would like to see make a comeback

$

0

In the 1990s, we didn't have cable connections, set-top box, DTH or multiplexes. Then the mode of entertainment was only Doordarshan. This was the time when Bollywood actors started their career and established their name. Today, if the 90s shows are aired again then they will surely be a major hit.

Mowgli (Based on The Jungle Book)

An animated adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's stories from The Jungle Book, Mowgli was aired on Doordarshan in 1993. With 52 episodes, surely we would like to see its comeback. An animated movie based on the collection was also released earlier this year. The Jungle Book is the story of a boy Mowgli, who gets lost in the Jungle and is later brought-up by Alexandar the wolf and with Kaa (Python), Baloo (blue Bear) and Bagheera (black Panther). We are in 2016, but still the title song 'Jungle Jungle pata chala hai, Chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai' is on our minds.

Shriman Shrimati

The spirit of dance

The pursuit of a passion for dance is fraught with risk to lives and livelihood for Afghan dancers, writes Madhavi Puranam. Nooriya Habibi and Obaid Zazai and a team of Attan dancers from Afghanistan are in Hyderabad for the first International Dance Festival mounted by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) with Prasar Bharati, Telangana government and Doordarshan as the organising partners. As they enthusiastically shared about the Afghan culture, you wonder what culture and arts could have survived such destructive times. The horrifying image of the Taliban destroying Bamiyan Buddha statues of central Afghanistan dating back to the 4-5th centuries AD are still vivid; and the havoc wreaked upon a country whose history dates back to fifty thousand years has been a monumental tragedy. Nooriya nods with wisdom beyond her age when she says, “Yes, we risk our lives to pursue our arts and culture.” When asked if she is not afraid, she says defiantly, “For how long can one be afraid? We have to risk something, even if it is our life, to gain something.”

The Afghan dancers of Pashtun origin participate in the ABU festival just to assert that they too have a distinct cultural identity and their spirit is greater than the destruction inflicted, and the sectarian strife cause by some of the countries neighbouring Afghanistan. Of a country of 35 million people, where 70 percent are illiterate, the remaining 30 percent who are literate are predominantly artists and people dealing with cultural activities in one way or the other.Nooriya, a Pashtun girl, who faces severe ostracism for her interest in arts and modelling, is also pursuing her graduation in an environment where women face immense suppression. The army fatigues, which she was sporting albeit with a headscarf, symbolized her indefatigable spirit of breaking free of the shackles. The government official accompanying the Afghan artists, Mohammad Homayoun Feroz, Director of Arts and Literary programs, Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA), graciously shared Afghanistan government’s efforts to keep alive the arts and provide encouragement to the artists. He reflected on how an artist with his deep knowledge of the society and its problems strives for peace. Also a filmmaker, Homayoun, shared how arts cater to the higher ideals of mankind. He declared Nooriya as a “Champion” in a society where women hardly get their due. He informed that the matters of arts and culture are monitored at the highest level- President Ashraf Ghani, his advisor, Rahimi, and the Director General of RTA. Obaid Zazai is not only a model but also a costume designer some of whose exotic creations were displayed at the festival. A costume woven in gold was the highlight apart from the exquisite weaves and embroidery and the ethnic jewellery of Afghanistan.

The young dancers at this inaugural edition of ABU International Television dance festival on January 15,exhibited immense energy and spirit and their friendly and affable nature was endearing. These Pashtun ethnic people danced a form called Attan accompanied by the lively dhol and shehnai. Their swirling movements whose beauty was enhanced by their flowing costumes, pirouettes and the head rotations with their long locks flying in frenzy created magical moments. It is not easy for these young male dancers to pursue their interest despite societal disapproval, dance not being able to offer a living to sustain them, and above all staking their lives for the love of their life. They stood out in quiet dignity with their own distinct identity at the festival where the other participating countries included Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Indonesia, India, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
