Inspiration-This 22 Year-Old Author’s Book Is Being Promoted by the Govt of India in 200 Countries!

Her book, a passionate love story that hit the bestseller charts after its release at the Delhi Book Fair last year, has been picked up by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to be included in its library.

The ministry has added the book to the list of 200 titles that best paint a vivid picture of India, and it will go to the MEA library as a part of its 200 missions abroad collection as well.

“When I got the call, I was ecstatic, of course. When they told me the book would be accessible in 200 countries, I was like, “200? I have barely covered one!” All in all, I am glad. Nothing makes me happier than the idea of someone far away, in a country I am not even aware of, flipping through the pages and connecting with Ayesha. Connecting with me,” Divyasha told Jaipur Women Blog.

The book was conceived during the three-month break after Divyasha’s class 12 exams. Entirely unsure about how it was going to turn out, she started writing and kept at it, until finally, she had a 250-page manuscript of her first novel.

The journey from writing the book to getting it published wasn’t easy. The 18-year-old approached different publications who didn’t take her seriously. However, patience helped her sail through the difficult times and finally she had her book published by Delhi-based LiFi Publications.

“I tried to reach out to editors of major publications, persuading them to at least read the work. But it was hard for me to convince them to take me seriously. Thanks to my age,” says Divyasha.

A B.Tech graduate specialising in computer science from the Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Divyasha’s original dream was to join NASA. While she is not set on becoming a professional writer yet, having published a book has certainly brought a few changes to her original plan. She is now pursuing her Masters in Management in Paris.

Writing, for her, is a ‘stress-buster’. For her next book, Divyasha has already started working on the draft of a story about a Delhi girl who turns into a serial killer.

Melghat is Maharashtra’s most malnourished area. When Dr Ravindra Kolhe, MD, started nursing the poor tribals here in 1989, the Infant Mortality Rate was 200 per 1,000 infants. Today, it has come down to 60, thanks to the medical awareness spread by Dr Kolhe and his wife Smita, who have made tribal upliftment the motto of their life.

With Mahatma Gandhi as his role model, Dr Kolhe has been working here for the past three decades now, and charges just Rs 2 for medical consultation. Kolhe has received help and encouragement throughout his life from his wife Smita, who is a graduate in law and also a paediatrician. “I am lucky to have a wife who accepted the kind of lifestyle I chose for both of us,” Dr Kolhe told the Times of India in an interview.

Dr Kolhe has also extended his work to areas like farms, power generation and labour wages. Apart from consultation, the husband and wife team have also been active in creating awareness about women’s health and education. Dr Kolhe says that he will not accept any government aid for his work as he believes in self-reliance. He, however, accepted the awards bestowed on him because they make his father proud.
In an interview with The New Indian Express, he said that the area still has high malnourishment levels.

Sitar legend Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, a pioneer in the history of strings, and the last luminary in the sitar trinity of Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, passes away. Sitar exponent Pandit Ravi Shankar would become a global sensation through his collaborations with George Harrison and Yehudi Menuhin, and his Woodstock performance among others with tabla legend Ustad Allah Rakha. Ustad Vilayat Khan’s gayaki ang would go on to charm the world. But before all that, a 1959 concert at the US Consulate in the Capital breathed a new dimension into the world of sitar.
Mumbai-based Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, then 32, and much younger than Shankar and Khan, played alongside legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. Khan matched his strings to Brubeck’s refined key structures, the harmony of the piano melded with the resplendent strains of the sitar and were punctuated by tabla rhythms from Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. But the sitar renditions were nothing that the audience was used to in the country. It was different from the Shankar’s improvised tantrakaari (virtuosity) and the vocal style of Vilayat Khan. Ustad Halim Jaffer Khan brought his own techniques to the sitar, which when compiled together, were given the name Jafferkhani baaj (playing style). “He didn’t play the long alaap because he thought no one had the time for it. He played the jod alaap, a relatively faster version of a raga’s opening. Then there was the echo effect in the beginning along with techniques such as Gat bharan and Uchhat ladi, the latter being a style where a single matra can be broken into 16 parts. This was unique in the world of sitar and Indian classical music,” says Zunain Khan, Khan’s son. Khan’s distinction as a sitar player lay in his musicianship. He was the last luminary in the famed trinity of sitar that comprised Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. Khan passed away at his Bandra residence on Wednesday. He was 89.
Sitar player Pandit Nayan Ghosh, son of Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, called the musician’s demise the end of an era. “I can never get over his sense of precision and rationality even during his last moments. The things he remembered from the times gone by were amazing. Of course he was a great musician, but beyond that, a fine human being. Unlike other classical musicians Khan’s sense of humour could make you fall off your chair. He was my father’s friend, but he made you feel like he was your contemporary. His demise has ended that iconic generation of sitar players,” says Ghosh about Khan, who was awarded a Padma Shri in 1970 and Padma Bhushan in 2006. Born in Jaora, Madhya Pradesh, Khan learnt under the Beenkar gharana of Indore and from his father, Jaffer Khan. His family moved to Mumbai, and a talented Khan became an All India Radio artiste in the ’40s, who performed across the country. Soon his ideas and innovations made north Indian audiences familiar with Carnatic ragas. He rendered them with Hindustani sensibilities, and also composed and played for Hindi films, thus making his contribution to the Hindi cinema extremely significant. K Asif’s magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam (1960) showed the hallmark of his brilliance. Khan’s sitar riffs recorded the angst of a lover as Anarkali entered Akbar’s royal court. Brought in on a taraana, sung by Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan, Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic Pyar kiya toh darna kya in raag Gara would etch the song forever in the minds and hearts of its audience.
This was at a time when classical musicians were averse to be a part of film projects. Composers like Naushad had to coax legends like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan to be a part of his film projects. Khan’s pieces in Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), where he collaborated with Ustad Bismillah Khan, Kohinoor (1960), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955) and Anarkali (1953) found a unique status and much popularity. “He was a progressive artiste. Those were earlier days and classical musicians liked to be purists and slightly closed-minded. However, he was extremely open to experimenting with music in films,” says Ghosh. Khan’s popularity remained limited to the connoisseurs of classical music, and didn’t pass down to the masses. This was despite his contribution to Hindi film music and regular performances at the most prestigious music festivals in the country. Many attribute that to the fact that Khan wasn’t a flamboyant artiste. He was a simple man, who played his music and went home. He laughed with his friends, and didn’t have an aura around his personality. “At a time when the world only recognised the styles of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan, Khan’s hours of practice resulted in a new style. Many liked it, many didn’t. Probably he didn’t travel as much, or didn’t want to travel, or probably adulation didn’t interest him. Those permutations and combinations of sound he created were very interesting, something we hadn’t heard before,” says sitar player Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan’s son.

For the first time ever, the Vijayawada All India Radio (AIR) has set up a stall at the Vijayawada Book Festival showcasing the digitised archives, treasured music and literary works. It is turning out to be a major attraction for music lovers, especially senior citizens. Novels, plays, stage verses and musical recordings are available at the AIR stall. “This is the first time that we have moved out of the premises of the AIR. Our vintage collection, which is an exclusive property of the AIR is now available for the music lovers,” said Assistant Director for programmes, Vijayawada AIR, J Sailaja Rao. “We have a permanent store for selling CDs here at the AIR office too,” Sailaja Rao said. She said the works of Viswanatha Satyanarayana, Gurajada Appa Rao and Gora are yet to be digitised. Many NRIs and relatives of literary greats are coming to the AIR seeking archival material. The digitisation is a phase-wise work.
A panel selects the classics and sends them to Bengaluru and thence to Delhi for final approval. “Every year, Rs 5 lakh is being sanctioned for digitisation,” Sailaja Rao said. “A lot more focus should be on digitisation and the collection should be made available to the general public,” said senior AIR announcer A Sharada. AIR librarian P Srinivas too feels the archival material should reach the common man. “I am a great fan of Viswanatha Satyanarayana’s recordings. The AIR should digitise all the works of the great author,” said retired professor Madhira Shankar Prasad.

Prasar Bharati DG assures special dispensation for Arunachal, Sikkim

A month after Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Cooperation of India) announced to launch DD Arun Prabha, Doordarshan’s second channel for the north-east, the first ever interactive meeting in this regard was held at the Doordarshan Kendra here on Friday.

The meeting which had its prime focus on evolving the prospects of film making in the state of Arunachal also dealt in detail on the programme proposals for DD-Arun Prabha which are open for the reputed producers/production houses of the state for the upcoming 24x7 satellite channel. During the meeting, the Prasar Bharati team was headed by DG Supriya Sahu who is a senior IAS officer; the film fraternity of the state was led by Film Federation of Arunachal (FFA) president Chopa Cheda. Speaking on the occasion, Sahu called upon the film producers and directors to come up with innovative proposals for programmes, serials, tele-films, documentaries etc and assured that the entire proposal put forward, especially by the filmmakers from Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim would be given utmost priority.

“Though the channel will cover entire North East, however, special focus and precedence will be given to shows/programmes from Arunachal and Sikkim,” assured Sahu. She however, clarified that proposals put forward would be properly scrutinized and transparency would be maintained in order to make sure that only the best programmes go through. Appealing the filmmakers to come up with interesting programmes and one’s which are out of the box, the DG added, “We are looking for innovative shows and documentaries. Give programmes that are of good quality and that can help you make your name in the world.” “The camera work should be splendid while the anchor should be dynamic,” she added. Further stating that no experience criteria is required to submit proposals while the same was different a few years ago, Sahu also appealed to utilize the funds provided by the government properly if one’s proposal is selected. Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the FFA, Cheda appealed the DG also to accept proposals for showcasing feature films in the channel, to which the latter assured to look into.

Cheda was of the opinion that if Doordarshan gives the filmmakers of the state an opportunity to showcase their films then it would boost their morale in a huge way. “Though Arunachal has ample amount of talent in terms of filmmaking but we do not have the platform to showcase them and accordingly we incur huge losses. This directly demoralize us to make more films,” Cheda who himself is a film producer and president of Arunachal Press Club added. Where documentary maker Sanju Dodum put forwards various suggestions which according to him needed small considerations such as fees for the proposal ie Rs 25,000/- and is non refundable, senior actor cum director of state Hage D Appa also shared his views in terms of proposal ratio which is 50:50.

Doordarshan’s Engineer-in-chief C B S Manrya, ADGs Dr Shailendra Kumar, Alok Agarwal, J K Chandiva and ADG (NE) M S Ansari also spoke on the occasion. Among others present were Tsengpa Norbu (film director cum producer), Shambo Flago (director), Alison Welly (producer), and the technical staff of DD Arun Prabha. It is pertinent to mention here that Prasar Bharati is making special efforts in North East Region (NER) to promote and nurture talent, provide a platform to deserving producers/artists from NER as well as from outside to encourage production of better programmes for Doordarshan viewers. DD-Arunprabha will be a 24x7 satellite Channel of Doordarshan, originating from DDK, Itanagar.Programmes on the channel would show richness, variety and diversity of local culture. The channel would seamlessly integrate NER with the entire country. The channel’s USP would be to attract young people of NER with contemporary entertainment shows embedded with informative content.

The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has allocated a sum of Rs 7 crore to the broadcaster for the launch of DD Arun Prabha which would be Doordarshan’s second channel for the region. Prasar Bharati runs Doordarshan and All India Radio in the country.

In combination with NXP’s newly announced i.MX 8 applications processor and the new TDF8534 smart Class D amplifier, NXP is now able to offer a complete high-performance, easy-to-use car infotainment platform with integrated audio in the market. Car infotainment is a true differentiator for carmakers and the competitive automotive marketplace. The integration provided by the SAF4000 reduces complexity and system costs while delivering a 60% power and space savings for great design flexibility.

Quotes:
“The step from multi-chip discrete to a one-chip RFCMOS solution is a true quantum leap for the industry,” said Torsten Lehmann, senior vice president and general manager of Car Infotainment and Driver Assistance at NXP. “One-chip means a significantly smaller hardware footprint, easier development and simple worldwide integration with the ability to receive multiple different digital, as well as analog radio standards and to switch between them via software. Centralized infotainment head units, distributed radio/audio systems, as well as smart antenna solutions are perfectly supported by this new one-chip family.”
