An Extended Family Aizawl in Mizoram - Memoirs from AK Goel

I would like to share a nice and touching experience about the AIR Family.

This is a real incident when I was posted at Aizawl in Mizoram in the year 2010. I went there to join on 01st September 2010. One unique thing about me is that where ever I am posted I go there with my family. So I went to Aizawl along with my wife, elder daughter and my nephew, who happens to be living with me since 2006 since I lost both my sister and her husband. This boy was studying in class VII. My son was then working in Punjab and my daughter in law was in Punjab with my son. Younger daughter was pursuing M. Phil in Jawaharlal Lal Nehru University in New Delhi. After submitting her thesis she was to join me in Aizawl. So she booked her ticket from Delhi to Aizawl and she had to break her flight in Kolkatta, and had to stay the night there in Kolkatta. She was engaged. So along with me her father in law was also worried about her travelling to Aizawl alone, and then staying the night at Kolkatta airport. I did not know anyone in Kolkatta, but her father in law had a family friend in Kolkatta. So he called up this family friend of his and requested her to take my daughter to her place. Though my daughter didn't want to go to strangers house. But she obeyed her would be father in law and went out of airport where this lady was already waiting for my daughter. Anyway she was well taken care of by her father in laws friend.

Next morning she was dropped back to Kolkatta Airport. She had some time for her flight. Suddenly she realised that she was left with very little money as she was carrying 20 Kgs of rice and some of her books and her personal baggage, as after submission of her thesis she had to vacate the hostel, so she was entitled to 25 Kgs of luggage and she was carrying more than 50 Kgs, so after paying for the excess baggage she didnt have much money, and there was very little balance in her mobile phone. So whatever balance she had, she told me to get her mobile recharged. I opened my phone book and went through it. I came across Shiela Namchu Bhutia's name who was my batch mate of1988. The last I knew about her was that she was in Gangtok. I called her up. Asked her, her welfare and what she was doing. She said that after her superannuation she had settled in Kolkatta and was doing Duty Officers duty after her retirement. I gave her my daughters number and requested her to recharge my daughters phone who was at Kolkatta Airport and was not having enough balance in her phone just in case she needed to talk in case of emergency. Shiela Namchu Bhutia immediately did it. My daughter then called me up and said yes her phone was recharged. I gave her Shiela's number and my daughter immediately thanked Shiela Aunty. This is extended AIR family. Wasn't it touching and being proud of, of being part of this great organisation.

Off the beaten track: TV show Byomkesh Bakshi is popular even now

When National Award-winning actor Rajit Kapur decided to play the role of detective Byomkesh Bakshi (BB), who he describes as “an ordinary man with extraordinary powers of thinking”, little did he know that his life would change forever. Even today, Indian audiences remember Rajit as Byomkesh.Based on stories created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay and directed by Basu Chatterjee, the show aired on Doordarshan for two seasons, one in 1993 and another in 1997. Set in Kolkata, the protagonist of the show, Byomkesh, was the desi version of Sherlock Holmes. He was a soft-spoken astute investigator. Another important character in the show was his friend Ajit, played by KK Raina.

Rajit says the show wasn’t a gamble for him. “The director called me and offered me the role. It was a fantastic one, so I agreed immediately,” he says. The show was different from the others that aired on TV at that time. “What was extraordinary about the experience was that we didn’t shoot BB episode wise; it was shot like a film,” says Rajit, adding that they shot at one location at a time. They first finished shooting all the scenes of Byomkesh’s house, and then went to Kolkata to shoot the other scenes. “Since multiple stories would be shot together at one location, we were constantly changing costumes and makeup. So, the treatment was of a film, and it was later brought together at the editing table. The house, which was Byomkesh’s home on the show, was in Versova, Andheri (W). We spent the whole of May shooting there,” says the actor, adding that shooting the entire show took six months.

Rajit enjoyed the “practical approach of the director”. He says, “I would take notes on my script, because we were jumping scenes and costumes. I was doing episode one and then a scene from episode 12. You have to know your script well enough to go back and forth.” The actor adds that having a bound script with dialogues for all the episodes was helpful.Rajit worked hard on the character, and delivered the role on screen on the basis of his own interpretation. Following the director’s vision and adding his bit, his portrayal won everyone over. Basu and Rajit loved the simplicity of the character and the narrative. “Byomkesh was a dhoti-kurta clad detective. I learnt how to tie a dhoti. And till today, I know how to do that because of my character. The show became huge. The audience, especially the youth, loved it, as Byomkesh was a relatable person, and not a larger-than-life character. I have never received so much fan mail in my life as I did for the show. Till date, people think of me as Byomkesh. They may not know my name, but they remember the show,” says Rajit.

Apparently, the actor had appointed a person to sort the fan mail, which included invitations, love letters, marriage proposals and requests to solve cases. Rajit’s favourite episode was Cycle Ki Ghanti, which was about a pin in the bell of a cycle, and how a murderer used it to kill people.

Tribute to John Logie Baird, the inventor of TV, on his 127th Birth Anniversary. (Part I)

John Logie Baird (14 August 1888 – 14 June 1946) was a Scottish engineer, innovator, one of the inventors of the mechanical television, demonstrating the first working television system on 26 January 1926, and inventor of both the first publicly demonstrated colour television system, and the first purely electronic colour television picture tube. In 1928 the Baird Television Development Company achieved the first transatlantic television transmission. Baird's early technological successes and his role in the practical introduction of broadcast television for home entertainment have earned him a prominent place in television's history. Baird was ranked number 44 in the BBC's list of the 100 Greatest Britons following a UK-wide vote in 2002. In 2006, Baird was named as one of the 10 greatest Scottish scientists in history, having been listed in the National Library of Scotland's 'Scottish Science Hall of Fame'. In 2015 he was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.
Baird was born on 14 August 1888 in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire, and was the youngest of four children of the Reverend John Baird, the Church of Scotland's minister for the local St Bride's Church and Jessie Morrison Inglis, the orphaned niece of a wealthy family of shipbuilders from Glasgow. He was educated at Larchfield Academy (now part of Lomond School) in Helensburgh; the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College; and the University of Glasgow. While at college Baird undertook a series of engineering apprentice jobs as part of his course. The conditions in industrial Glasgow at the time helped form his socialist convictions but also contributed to his ill health. His degree course was interrupted by the First World War and he never returned to graduate. At the beginning of 1915 he volunteered for service in the British Army but was classified as unfit for active duty. Unable to go to the Front, he took a job with the Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company, which was engaged in munitions work.
The development of television was the result of work by many inventors. Among them, Baird was a prominent pioneer and made major advances in the field. Many historians credit Baird with being the first to produce a live, moving, greyscale television image from reflected light. Baird achieved this, where other inventors had failed, by obtaining a better photoelectric cell and improving the signal conditioning from the photocell and the video amplifier. Between 1902 and 1907, Arthur Korn invented and built the first successful signal-conditioning circuits for image transmission. The circuits overcame the image-destroying lag effect that is part of selenium photocells. Korn's compensation circuit allowed him to send still fax pictures by telephone or wireless between countries and even over oceans, while his circuit operated without benefit of electronic amplification. Korn's success at transmitting halftone still images suggested that such compensation circuits might work in television. Baird was the direct beneficiary of Korn's research and success. In his first attempts to develop a working television system, Baird experimented with the Nipkow disk. Paul Gottlieb Nipkow had invented this scanning disc system in 1884. Television historian Albert Abramson calls Nipkow's patent "the master television patent". Nipkow's work is important because Baird and many others chose to develop it into a broadcast medium.
Baird in 1926 with his televisor

           "James" and "Stooky Bill".
In early 1923, and in poor health, Baird moved to 21 Linton Crescent, Hastings, on the south coast of England. He later rented a workshop in the Queen's Arcade in the town. Baird built what was to become the world's first working television set using items including an old hatbox and a pair of scissors, some darning needles, a few bicycle light lenses, a used tea chest, and sealing wax and glue that he purchased. In February 1924, he demonstrated to the Radio Times that a semi-mechanical analogue television system was possible by transmitting moving silhouette images. In July of the same year, he received a 1000-volt electric shock, but survived with only a burnt hand, and as a result his landlord, Mr Tree, asked him to vacate the premises. Baird gave the first public demonstration of moving silhouette images by television at Selfridges department store in London in a three-week series of demonstrations beginning on 25 March 1925.
In his laboratory on 2 October 1925, Baird successfully transmitted the first television picture with a greyscale image: the head of a ventriloquist's dummy nicknamed "Stooky Bill" in a 30-line vertically scanned image, at five pictures per second. Baird went downstairs and fetched an office worker, 20-year-old William Edward Taynton, to see what a human face would look like, and Taynton became the first person to be televised in a full tonal range. Looking for publicity, Baird visited the Daily Express newspaper to promote his invention. The news editor was terrified and he was quoted by one of his staff as saying: "For God's sake, go down to reception and get rid of a lunatic who's down there. He says he's got a machine for seeing by wireless! Watch him — he may have a razor on him."

first demonstration of the television at
22 Frith Street, Westminster, W1, London
On 26 January 1926, Baird repeated the transmission for members of the Royal Institution and a reporter from The Times in his laboratory at 22 Frith Street in the Soho district of London. By this time, he had improved the scan rate to 12.5 pictures per second. It was the first demonstration of a television system that could broadcast live moving images with tone graduation. He demonstrated the world's first colour transmission on 3 July 1928, using scanning discs at the transmitting and receiving ends with three spirals of apertures, each spiral with a filter of a different primary colour; and three light sources at the receiving end, with a commutator to alternate their illumination. That same year he also demonstrated stereoscopic television. In 1932, Baird was the first person in the United Kingdom to demonstrate ultra-short wave transmissions. Contrary to some reports, these transmissions were far from the first VHF telecasts. In 1931, the US Federal Radio Commission allocated VHF television bands. From 1931 to 1933, station W9XD in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, transmitted some of the first VHF television signals. The station's 45-line, triply interlaced pictures used the U. A. Sanabria television technology...........

Ustad Bismillah Khan (21 March 1916 – 21 August 2006) was perhaps single-handedly responsible for making the Shehnai a famous classical instrument. He brought the Shehnai to the center stage of Indian music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He was credited with having almost monopoly over the instrument as he and the Shehnai are almost synonyms. Ustad Bismillah Khan was one of the finest musicians in post-independent Indian classical music and one of the best examples of Hindu-Muslim unity in India. He played the Shehnai to audiences across the world. He was known to be so devoted to his art form that he referred to Shehnai as his begum (wife in Urdu) after his wife died. On his death, as an honour, his Shehnai was buried with him. He was known for his vision of spreading peace and love through music.

To pay tributes to Bharat Ratna, Ustad Bismillah Khan, AIR Pune organised a musical concert 'SWAR GUNGOTRI' in Auditorium and celebrated his 100th Birth anniversary year. In the beginning Shri. Ashish Bhatnagar DDG (Engg.) and Head of Station along with Shri. Ravindra Khasnis, Asst. Dir. (Prog.) and Head of Programme garlanded the photo of Ustad Bismillah Khan.

Then Shri. Madhukar Dhumal presented Shehnai. He received the initial training from Pandit Rajaram Shukla and 'Gunigandharva' Laxmanprasad Jaipurwale. He is team member of many famous Hindi music directors like Laxmikant Pyarelal, Rajesh Roshan, Bhappi Lahiri, A.R.Reheman, Ismail Darbar, Ram Laxman and Marathi Music director Shridhar Phadke. His one of the master piece is title music of Hindi film 'Swadesh'. During performance he was accompanied by Shri. Vijay Belbansi on Shehnai, Shri. Prashant Jadhav on Shehnai, Pandit Ramdas Palsule on Tabla and Shri. Vijay Pawar on Harmonium. First he presented Rag Puriya followed by Rag Durga. In memory of Ustad Bismillah Khan, he played Bismillah Khan's favourite 'Dhun in Mishr Khamaj' and at last 'Thumari Sindha Bhairavi'.

जरा सोचिये ...3 नवंबर 1947 को मेजर सोमनाथ शर्मा अगर अपनी बहादुर डॆल्टा कंपनी के पचास-एक जवानों के साथ श्रीनगर एयर-पोर्ट से सटे उस टीले पर वक्त से नहीं पहुँचे होते तो भारत का नक्शा कैसा होता...! मृत्यु से कुछ क्षणों पहले मेजर सोमनाथ द्वारा भेजा गया रेडियो पर संदेश:-“I SHALL NOT WITHDRAW AN INCH BUT WILL FIGHT TO THE LAST MAN & LAST ROUND" {मै एक इंच पीछे नहीं हटूंगा और तब तक लड़ता रहूँगा, जब तक कि मेरे पास आखिरी जवान और आखिरी गोली है}

Prasar Bharati saves AIR units

The RNUs at Indore, Pune, Dibugarh, Bhuj, Dharwad, Trichy and Kozhikode were to be closed while Allahabad, Pauri, Jalandhar, Patiala and Coimbatore would have ceased to have correspondents. Copies of the August 11 Prasar Bharati order have not been marked to the MIB. “The Ministry makes appointments in the news division while Prasar Bharati makes all other appointments. However, it looks like the MIB did not even consult Prasar Bharati before taking the decision to close the Regional News Units (RNUs),” said an officer in one of the three affected bodies who did not want to be named.

A senior Prasar Bharati official confirmed that the organisation considered the Ministry's decision as an intrusion on its autonomy. ‘Ministry’s prerogative’ “It is the Ministry's prerogative to transfer its officials. However, it is up to the Prasar Bharati to ensure that there is no break in our programming," he said. The Prasar Bharati has no plans to end programming in any center, the official said. “Dharwad, for example, is the cultural capital of Karnataka. The fishermen rely on our Tiruchi programming for information," said the official. An MIB spokesperson requesting anonymity said the changes were part of a streamlining effort.
Reinventing PIB
“This was a good way of strengthening the PIB. The government has to keep reinventing itself and make better utilisation of resources,” he said, refuting suggestions that the Prasar Bharati had not been taken into confidence: “There is a lot of understanding that goes into any decision the government takes.” In all, 24 cities and towns across 13 States have been affected by the changes made by the MIB. Tamil Nadu stands to lose the most, with Chennai losing an RNI field office and Madurai the PIB's branch. Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Naidu’s home State, and Telangana are the only States in the South that have not lost any offices.
Caught unawares
The move has caught the officers affected unawares. Earlier this year, the Additional Director General at the Chennai PIB requested the opening of a new office. “It is requested that a new PIB branch office may please be opened in the UT of Puducherry which is the only Union Territory having a Legislative Assembly,” wrote ADG K. Muthu Kumar on March 3. Instead of a new office, the region stands to lose the Madurai branch. The Registrar of Newspapers office in Chennai is already understaffed, with just three officials.
Blow to Tamil Nadu
“Tamil Nadu has a total of 8,225 titles and the office verifies 80-100 titles a months. They are already not able to perform surprise checks. When officers of the PIB take over, they will not be able to keep up,” said an officer familiar with the working of the RNI. He added that if reforms were on the MIB’s mind, it could have given the new State offices the power to issue certificates; applications are still being forwarded to Delhi for allotting registration numbers. ‘Public service broadcaster has no plans to end programming in any centre’

“In Odisha, all visually impaired students do not have access to books because of the shortage of Braille printers. In the absence of any permanent or tangible study material, it is very difficult for such students to enhance their knowledge base or prepare for examinations. That is why we started recording audio books, about four years back. And till now, more than 10,000 students in Odisha, including those in schools and colleges have benefited from these books,” says Abhaya Mohanta, one of the founders of We4You........................
