‘Sound’ theatre from AIR for a week
Radio drama is not theatre without the spectacle. For listeners of the numerous dramatic pieces of theatre on the All India Radio (AIR), it triggers a whole new world of imaginative theatre whose visual possibilities are immense. In a unique attempt, an amateur theatre group near Perumbavoor, Suvarna Theatres based at Valayanchirangara, is organising a radio drama fest titled Kathoram. “Radio drama always has its share of keen listeners,” Benoy Peter, social activist and secretary of the theatre group, seeks to dispel doubts whether radio plays are relevant any more. The theatre fest showcases seven plays across eight venues — including local arts and sports clubs, libraries, residences, and a school — where listeners lend their ears to successful theatre sound tracks for which actors such as Thilakan, NF Varghese and Siddique rendered their voice. “These are plays either written or directed by K.V. Sarath Chandran, whose contribution in this field is phenomenal. AIR Kochi Station director in-charge Balakrishnan Koyyal inaugurated the fest on August 6 and a crowd of about 80 people listened to ‘Adayalangal’ that day. Yesterday, there were 35 people. It’s about 40 today avidly listening to ‘Sathru’ in the dark. The experience it offers is more intense than that of a regular play, as it lets the listener conjure up the scenes on his mindscape. As such, radio plays have powerfully explored contemporary issues of significance,” says Mr. Peter.
On August 11, ‘Vithakkunnavante Upama’, a radio drama for which actor Siddique lent his voice would be played at the Higher Secondary School at Valayanchirangara which has a student strength of nearly 1,500. “Mr. Siddique made it memorable by lending voice to some six characters in that play, which campaigns against drug abuse. It’s a powerful medium to disseminate social messages. The actor will also be present at the school on the occasion.” On August 13, at the closure of the fest, an analysis of the plays would be held. Mr. Sarath Chandran will be a discussant.

DD programme on NE completes 50th episode
North East Round Up’, which is telecast on DD North East as well as on DD National every Sunday, has completed its 50th episode and in view of the enthusiastic response to this programme, the producers have decided to include more facets of the region in it. As DD is striving to improve its TRP with more interesting programmes, DD North East has gone ahead to showcase the best of the region. The ‘North East Round Up’ is one such effort to highlight the myriad aspects of life and living of the region with focus on the lesser known facets. “There’s no denying the fact that the overall scenario in the North East is changing for the better and there is a buzz of positivity. ‘North East Round Up’ is trying to portray that aspect with utmost sincerity with emphasis on soft stories on places of interest, historical importance, tourist destinations, the wide rainbow of culture and tradition, stories of success, local industries, entrepreneurship and development as a whole,” said Surajit Sinha Roy, producer of the programme.
According to Roy, this unique programme has been possible because of the support from all the DD Kendras of North East and the support from each and everyone at PPC (NE). “There is no denying the fact about the role that DD plays as a public service broadcaster. Even in the changed scenario of TV media in this country DD has been silently playing the proactive role of a catalytic force in the overall development process, preservation of culture, tradition, information, education and much more. Viewers of this country share an emotional bonding with all the channels of Doordarshan like DD News, DD National, DD Sports and DD North East etc,” said Roy.

Inspiration-How a High Schooler Used English to Change Lives in an Entire Village
In just a matter of two months, the residents of Khamgaon went from struggling with English to becoming near experts at it, all because of Diya’s perseverance.
“Everyone usually tries to get internships between the 10th and 11th grade to add to their résumé and I was no different. I started interning at an NGO called Swades and for the first few weeks I sat at my desk and assigned self help groups — it was boring and monotonous. One weekend my colleague was going to a village called Khamgaon where our volunteers often visited and asked me to join him…I immediately agreed! When I went there, I was blown away. The students I met were intelligent, educated and motivated but their confidence was at an all time low because they didn’t know English— they felt small and inferior. Something in me shifted and I decided that I wanted to make a change — these were people from my country who were so ashamed, all because they didn’t know English…I felt responsible to do something for them; for a better India… no matter how small the step was.
I reached Bombay and asked the CEO of Swades to let me go stay in their village and attempt to teach them English. She said she’d never done something like that before…but she wanted to give me a shot. I reached Khamgaon without any other volunteer from Swades and stayed with a local family who welcomed me with open arms. It’s like what you see in the movies… — houses made of cow dung, a walk to draw water from the well, green fields and exceptionally tasty chapattis.Swades had a sewing class for women at the centre, so I made it a point to go there the day I arrived and tell these women that I was here to teach them and their children English. I then went door to door, introduced myself in Marathi and tried to break the ice. The first few days I started off with one student, then two but one week later the entire sewing class of women showed up to learn English! Slowly but steadily I had 3 different batches running through the day — of little children, women and college students.
Everyday, I would think of new ways to challenge them, to teach them and to help them string sentences together word by word. A few weeks later, when I was at the market I overheard two of my sewing women students talking about which vegetables to buy…in English! I was delighted!
Everyday after I would return home and help Naitri Tai make dinner, my little students would come to me with questions… ‘Didi, how can I use this noun? or ‘What does this word mean?’ — they were thirsty for knowledge and I was thrilled that I could be the one to give it to them.
I didn’t realize when 2 months passed, but on my last day the entire village came together to give me a ‘bidai’. They planted two trees in my name, but the gift I got afterwards was one I’ll never forget all my life. My little students came in front of the audience and gave me a farewell speech…in close to accurate English! The last line they said was, ‘Thank you Didi, for changing our life’ and till today, I get goosebumps every time I think about it.”

I&B ministry allows CBFC to continue with 're-certification' of films for TV

The CAG in its report has said there is no provision in the Cinematograph Act, 1952, regarding the process of conversion of films from 'A' to 'UA/U' for TV. The CAG report has also said that the CBFC has converted 172 'A' category certified films into 'UA' category and 166 films of 'UA' category to 'U' category films during 2012-15. The report was tabled in the Parliament on August 2.
The I&B ministry had replied saying that there is no specific provision which prohibits recertification of films already certified. The auditor said it was not tenable.Last year, the CBFC had sought a clarification from the I&B ministry asking what should be its stand in case of re-certification of films for TV in the absence of specific provisions about it in the Cinematograph Act, 1952."For a few months during that period, we had stopped accepting applications for re-certification of films because there was no clarity on the matter," a CBFC official said."After the ministry replied around October last year, allowing us to proceed with the process, we started accepting applications for changing certifications for films for TV," the official said, adding that the CBFC has re-certifying of films for TV for years. However, for such films, the screening is held only before the examining committee, which gives out a final decision. No revising committee is constituted for the process.CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani told dna even though there is no separate "provision" in the act, mentioning "re-certification", the CBFC will continue to accept such applications unless there are contrary orders in this regard from the I&B ministry.

I&B Ministry asks broadcasters to give prime coverage to NE
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has asked broadcasters to give prime coverage to the north east region, especially while covering national events like the Republic Day.In a letter to private satellite TV channels, the ministry referred to the recommendations of the committee headed by M P Bezbaruah, a member of North-Eastern Council, on the concerns of the people of north east living in other parts of the country. It is important for the media to reach out to put north east on the national stage and prime coverage should be given to the north east region in the media, the ministry said.
It said in case of national events like the Republic Day, commentators should cover the event in the most effective way of presenting the north east.As Bollywood plays a prominent role in forming images in minds of people, use of north east locales for movies should be encouraged. Such incentives may also encourage popular serials in TVs to look at the north east and even to include stories from the region in such serials, it said.It also asked the media to be careful while covering sensitive race related issues and ensure that they become agents of diffusion of tension.
