Shri M. C. Aggarwal, former Engineer in Chief All India Radio had passed away today, one year ago i.e. on 26.08.2016. Shri Aggarwal was not keeping well for quite some time.

Shri Aggarwal, a 1972 batch IB(E)S Officer, had been actively involved in the planning and design of MW, SW & FM transmitting systems of All India Radio for about 25 years. Shri Aggarwal had also made valuable contribution in Doordarshan by conceptualizing and implementing 30 DTH channels of Doordarshan in a time-bound manner, which was later extended to 50 channels under his supervision and guidance. Shri Aggarwal had also worked as the Head of the Planning & Development Unit of All India Radio, which is responsible for implementing the grand plan for digitalization, before getting elevated to the post of Engineer-in-Chief.

He will always be remembered as an utmost honest and upright officer in AIR fraternity. Fayyaz Sheheryar, Director Genearal All India Radio, while condoling the demise of Shri MC Aggarwal had written - ........ In an uncongenial atmosphere marked by asphyxiation, MCA spoke when most of his colleagues chose silence, he advocated changing technology for fast changing India when the then masters understood just the revenue generation at the expense of much cherished Public Service Broadcasting....... ...

Prasar Bharati Parivar pays emotional tribute to him on his first death anniversary . Members can also pay tributes by offering comments below the post.

In the pic below is the captivating broadcaster, Mr K K Nayyar, who is still fondly remembered in Kashmir (& by Kashmiris) where he served as the Station Director of Radio Kashmir before a brief stint in DDK Srinagar.

Nayyar Sahib, as he was popularly known as, became a household name in Kashmir through his programmes, GharanoN ke Liye, Mehfil, face-to-face with Cine Stars who frequented Kashmir(to name a few) when Kashmir was Baagh-e-Jannat.

Before that he had served Urdu Service of ESD, the most popular service of All India Radio. We remember, he once recalled his visit to Pakistan during which he went to buy 'Paan & Cigarettes ' from a local vendor. When Nayyar Sahib asked for the thing he wanted, the Vendor asked to know from him if he was KK Nayyar! On hearing affirmative answerfrom the latter, the awe-struck paan seller stood up in reverence, gave packs of Cigarettes of Nayyar's brand, a specially prepared Paan, requested him to have tea & touched him as if he were a deity.

Nayyar Sahib has been a radio personality of domestic & sub-continental acclaim. I recently called him on his Lucknow number, in spite of being in late 80's (88 precisely), he has not dispossessed himself of his very own audio quality, the finesse of language, the gram, the right use of right expression for right connotation & the inimitable style.

In his active service, Nayyar Sahib was always immaculately dressed, a human being of excellent qualities of head & heart but would never compromise on broadcast ethics & perfection in presentation. V feel horrified on seeing many of today's Jockeys & broadcasters who lay their claim on moon & stars without letting themselves be measured by the rod of profession.

Nayyar Sahib has turned 88 just yesterday, V wish him long life, good health & ability to stand up guide & bless us all.

Photograph: Courtesy:- Mr Prithvi Raj Chouhan, Station Director, AIR Lucknow who called on him yesterday & took the picture which I cropped to make Nayyar Sahib discernible to those who couldn't see him after he attained age of superannuation.

Why listening to Radio is Special even in the age of TV

$
0
0

There is always the opportunity in India to make excellent radio programmes that are not news or current affairs, but unfortunately the private sector broadcasters have not taken up that opportunity
Recently I had a bout of an unpleasant complaint called Menieres Disease. The symptoms are unfortunate as well as unpleasant because they include severe vertigo, which makes a victim look as though he/she is drunk — lurching about the place and even falling down. The vertigo can be brought on by reading, particularly reading, and by looking at television screens. So I found myself doing a lot of listening. That has prompted me to write about the pleasure of listening quietly in today’s noisy world. First of all what did I listen to? As a school boy I enjoyed Charles Dickens but in my adulthood I found I was too impatient to persevere with his lengthy prolix novels. So with plenty of time on my hands I decided to have another go at two of them, this time of course listening to them rather than reading them. I listened to a reading, called an audio book, of the entire story of David Copperfield, which contains some of Dickens best known characters, David himself searching for a home, Micawber, always in debt but always optimistic about finding a way out of it supported by his long-suffering wife, and there is of course the repulsive, miserly, hypocrite Uriah Heap Encouraged by my enjoyment of David Copperfield, I turned to the Pickwick Papers. I heard a BBC Radio drama recording of the comic adventures of that irrepressible gentleman. Then I listened to the renowned BBC foreign correspondent, the late Charles Wheeler’s radio documentary about national service. I was reminded, sometimes uncomfortably, sometimes with amusement, of the two years I spent in the British Army. I listened to poetry too; and of course music.I always listen to the news on radio but I spent more time doing that when Menieres Disease struck me because I couldn’t read newspapers. I heard wonderfully weird radio programmes too, including one about beards in which I heard the presenter having his beard trimmed.

Whenever I talk to students of journalism in India about radio I am told “It’s dead. Killed by television”. As the presenter of a radio programme broadcast in Britain I know that’s certainly not true there. Here, for some reason, I have never been able to understand, while the government has lost control over television it retains a monopoly over radio news. Of course there is always the opportunity in India to make excellent radio programmes that are not news or current affairs, but unfortunately the private sector broadcasters have not taken up that opportunity. All India Radio does make some excellent documentaries but they are difficult to find because so little effort is made to publicise them.Having got my gripe about radio in India over, I want to return to the charm of listening. There are, in my view, three reasons why listening is special. The first is that listeners have to create their own pictures. That’s why broadcasters say “the pictures are better on radio”, and why the former head of BBC Radio, Liz Forgan, once said to me, “Radio has a great future provided you don’t start putting pictures to it.” That is a temptation in these days of digital radio.Creating one’s own pictures requires concentration and imagination. Because they are listeners’ own pictures and because creating them needs effort they stick more firmly in the mind than pictures which are provided for them. That is the second reason why listening has a special quality. The third is that listening is usually a solitary occupation which makes it peculiarly intimate. Radio broadcasters can give listeners the impression that they are speaking to them individually. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sometimes achieves that impression in his Maan Ki Baat broadcasts. I assume that is why he has chosen radio as the medium for those broadcasts.I first learnt to love listening when I was a small child and my mother used to read to me. I didn’t need Menieres Disease to remind me of the special pleasure it gives but listening did mean I felt no deprivation when I couldn’t read or watch the television. It meant more than that. It meant I could spend my time well.

Inspiration-This Family Did Not Send Their Children to School, but Taught Them by Creating a Forest.

Sarang Hills is a repository of knowledge gathered over 30 years of saying no to formal education, living close to nature and learning from everyday life.Thirty-six years ago, Gopalakrishnan and Vijayalekshmi decided that their yet-to-be-born child will not go to school. As government school teachers, they were themselves disillusioned with the limitations of formal education and how it left children unprepared to deal with life. This dream school, which they fondly named Sarang, was to be nothing like what traditional schools were – no certificates, no rote learning, no ‘one-size-fits-all’ curriculum.

In 1994, the couple quit their jobs and started working on Sarang. Their first student, naturally, was their son, Gautham. Instead of staring at black boards, the children set off their learning on a massive canvas – a barren land that Gopalakrishnan and Vijayalekshmi bought in Attappady, near Palakkad, Kerala. The children of Sarang, friends and well-wishers joined Gopalakrishnan and Vijayalekshmi in their dream to revive the land. The task was by no means ordinary or easy. While their neighbours gave up their battle with the harsh terrain and left the hills, the Sarang family stayed on the hilltop, determined to bring greenery back to the hills.

They learned their physics, biology, geography, mathematics, chemistry and environmental science by seeing, feeling and doing. They also learned language, art and culture. But the children who started this work could only be part of it for two years. By the end of 1995, the 50 odd children who learned at Sarang had to discontinue their wonderful journey.Gautham, who is 36-years-old today, did not go through formal schooling throughout his life. Gautham says, “I saw other children going through the pressures of school while I found myself curious to learn. When I was just 10-years-old, I stayed away from home with my cousin to learn the martial art of Kalaripayattu. We were on our own, cooking our food, washing our clothes and being responsible for each other. Out of curiosity about how a radio works, I became an apprentice at a local radio shop. I cleared the amateur wireless operator’s exam at the age of 14 and became a Ham Radio hobbyist”.
