AIR unveils 'journo' Pt Ravi Shankar

All India Radio Archives Kolkata has stumbled upon one of the rarest programmes in India's cultural history. On eve of the 97th birth anniversary of Pandit Ravi Shankar on Thursday, the archives has unveiled the legendary musician in a new avatar -that of a journalist. Instead of a sitar in hand, Pt. Ravi Shankar took charge of the microphone to interview legendary tabla player Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa Khan in Hindi. The archives has also traced and digitized six rare sitar recordings of the maestro. AIR Kolkata's station director Sutapa Dutta Gupta plans to release them commercially too. The tapes not only record the two masters in conversation for 23 minutes and 42 seconds, they also have Shankar listening to Thirakwa reminiscing about his childhood, years of training and performances with artistes from different gharanas. However, AIR hasn't been able to put a date to the recording.
"Thirakwa Khan saab spoke about how he would practise all night and get rest for half an hour in the morning. This was followed by another day-long session of riyaaz with a short break for lunch. When asked where Pt. Ravi Shankar's generation lagged, Thirakwa Khan saab pointed out that their riyaaz wasn't enough though they got a lot of appreciation because of publicity," said Soumyen Basu, assistant station director (programme), AIR Kolkata. On December 13, 2016, domain expert of AIR Archives Kolkata Tuhin Subhro Bhattacharya examined Pt. Ravi Shankar's interview and wrote a note saying: "This is one of the rarest of rare programmes of AIR. This programme should be preserved very carefully." That was evident on Thursday when the priceless seven-inch tapes started playing on the rare console tape recorder of the archives. For connoisseurs, the recording also has Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa Khan demonstrating his tabla expertise in different gharanas and concludes with him keeping Pt Ravi Shankar's request to present a recital.
Tabla maestro Pt Anindya Chatterjee described the recording as "historic". "There isn't a single table player in India who has not been inspired by Thirakwa Khan saab. To have him interviewed by Panditji is a gem of a recording," Chatterjee said. Pt Tanmoy Bose never had the privilege of listening to this recording. "I'm overjoyed to know that AIR has traced this jewel," Bose said. The archives has also traced two interviews of Pt. Ravi Shankar taken by Pt Jnan Prakash Ghosh. One 27-minute-long interview has Pt. Ravi Shankar sharing numerous anecdotes about his first visit to Kolkata in 1932 "These are real treasures. I wish AIR broadcasts these too," said musicologist Anindya Banerjee. The archives has completed digitizing the six sitar recordings where Pt. Ravi Shankar is accompanied by Ustad Karamatullah Khan. They were done on February 2, 1966.

Inspiration:This Farmer Started Teaching 3 Students in His Living Room. His School Now Has 1,320 Students!

A farmer from Khardia village of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Saran has taken it upon himself to be that change.Keshav was elected as the Pradhan of his village in 1988. Extremely dedicated towards the development of his village, he did not leave any stone unturned to reach officers who could help get all the amenities. However, he realized that had he been as educated as those officers, he would be able to accomplish a lot more. It became clear to him that education meant power.

With this thought, this class 11 pass farmer started his mission to educate each and every person of his village. He started with night classes for the adults in the village in his living room in 1989. While teaching the adults, he realised that many of them didn’t even send their kids, especially girls, to school, making illiteracy prevail generation after generation. As there was no school in the village those days, he took his 3 daughters and a son by bicycle to a school 6 km to 7 km away. At the time, he knew that no one else would do the same for their daughters.Keshav urged his students from the night school to send their children during the day to study. However, only three children turned up on day one.
This did not curb the high spirits of this farmer-turned-teacher. He continued teaching these three students again in the living room of his three-room house. As the students were not increasing, Keshav started visiting each and every villager personally and urging them to send their children to school. As there was no help from the authorities so far to build a school, Keshav decided to hold classes for the village children at the chaupal adjacent to his residence.Keshav started teaching his students at the chaupal before the school was built.Soon, the response of residents from his village and the nearby ones was so overwhelming, Keshav started working on his dream of building a school. He built the school on his 4-acre ancestral land, and as the number of students slowly increased, the news reached the education minister of the area. The minister then visited Keshav’s school and helped him to get it registered.

Now, the school has also received a ‘junior high school’ recognition and is called ‘Keshav Inter College’. There are 1,320 students enrolled, including 670 girls.Keshav’s son, Arun Kumar, and his daughter-in-law, Krishna, also help him run the college. The school has 21 teaching and staff members but the Sarans still charge a minimal fee to the students.

Vidyanjali - (School Volunteer Programme) is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education & Literacy to enhance community and private sector involvement in Government run elementary schools across the country under the overall aegis of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

This programme has been envisaged to bring together people willing to volunteer their services at schools which really need them. The volunteers will act as mentors, confidantes and communicators with children.

In consonance with this objective, MyGov in collaboration with Ministry of Human Resource Development has developed a mobile application for schools and other educational institutions to engage interested citizens in volunteering for such on-ground engagements.

The application will enable interested volunteers to connect with government educational institutions including schools to mentor students. This mobile application would act as a nexus between the volunteers and government bodies under a Volunteer Management Program. Through this mobile application, mentors can interact with institutions directly and can contribute in the institution’s activity with relevant knowledge and skill set........

On 9th March 2008, this ethereal 10 second clip of a man (or woman) singing the French folk song "Au Clair de la Lune", was played for the first time in 150 years. It is currently thought to be the oldest known recorded human voice, predating Thomas Edison's first phonograph recording of 1877. The "phonautograph", created by etching soot-covered paper by Parisian inventor Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, was played by US scientists using a "virtual stylus" to read the lines. The recording was initially believed to be the voice of a woman or adoles

India’s first community radio still makes the right connect

$

Sangam, which went on air in 2008, continues its two-hour broadcast in Telugu and reaches out to people of 150 villages in Telangana. Musligari Nagamani, a farmer, is listening to the radio sitting a few inches away from her as she cooks dinner on firewood in her tiled-roof house. The broadcast in Telugu is peppered with local colloquialisms and slang. This is how evenings are spent in most houses in Pastapur, a village in the Jarasangam mandal of the Sangareddy district, ever since the very popular Sangam Radio, the first community radio in India, was launched in 2008 after decade-long efforts to get the license for it. Off the main road of Zaheerabad, it takes 10 kilometres down a right turn to reach the radio station, which cannot be seen from the road since it is surrounded by trees. The tower that broadcasts eagerly awaited transmissions for two hours every evening sticks out from over them.
“We relax and listen to the radio while preparing dinner. We hear our language in our way of speaking. It makes me feel like one of our neighbours is talking to us about different things,” says Nagamani who, like her mother M. Ratnamma, prefers to listen to the radio than sit in front of the TV. “Villagers feel happy when they hear their voice on the radio in the form of songs or discussions. They will also share this joyfully with their neighbours. The song the community radio plays depends on the season, whether it time to plough, plant seeds, irrigate or harvest. The songs recall our tiring work at the field in the morning,” says Begari Sammamma of the village of Bidakanne. Over the years, Sangam has collected of about 2,500 songs sung by members of the community, often with instrumental accompaniment. Apart from songs, programmes can feature farming practices, how to observe festivals, birthday wishes and health tips.
Interactive mode
The last half hour is allotted for listeners who want to call broadcasters and share their views with them. For example, missing cattle are reported and traced with the help of listeners. “The owners contact the radio to thank the listeners,” she added. Sangam reaches about 150 villages in Jarasangam, Zaheerabad and Raikod, and parts of Kohir and Nyalkal, everyday from 7 p.m. to 9. p.m. Each village has a population of between 600 to 1,200 people. Transmission has never been disrupted in the last eight years, except on four days due to a short circuit.
Empowering facilitator
The Pastapur-based Deccan Development Society (DDS), an NGO working on issues related to farmers, sees community radio as a facilitator for two-way communication, as opposed to the one way of conventional media. As early as 1999, Sangam had started narrow-casting, in which recordings made on a tape (some of their early recordings are still in this format) is broadcast for a limited audience in a place where the community can gather. DDS also established an FM radio station, a transmission tower and recording facilities, with the support of UNESCO, in the same year. .........
P.V. Satheesh, director, DDS, recalls, “While it used to cost about ₹5 crore to establish an FM radio station at that time, we were able to do it with only ₹20 lakh. Our transmission radius is about 30 kilometres, whereas for the All India Radio, it is 100 kilometres.” Hyderabad Narsamma and Nalugindla Narasamma, the two Dalit women (another first) behind the Sangam radio broadcasts, are educated up to Class X. By day, they are farmers working in the fields, by night, they turn broadcasters. The radio runs with about eight reporters — three men and five women, none of whom have yet completed Class X at school. All staff are on the rolls of the DDS. Hyderabad Narsamma studied at the Pachasala, a school run by the DDS, where Mr. Satheesh would call her 'General' for her leadership and organisation skills, a sobriquet that stuck — most people know her as General Narasamma instead of Hyderabad Narasamma.
Village visits
“When we plan to visit a village, it will be in such a way that we spend almost the entire day meeting different sections of the people and recording their observations on various issues. If we meet elderly people, we record their experiences of farming when they were young, the songs they sang while working in the fields or during weddings and festivals. They know such a lot and we are sharing that abundant knowledge with others,” ‘General’ Narasamma told this reporter. And guess how much it costs to run Sangam? ₹10,000 per month — that’s their power and phone bill.

Govt has taken measures to strengthen economic model of AIR: Rathore

$
0
0
For improving the quality of programmes and creating a self-sustained economic model, All India Radio (AIR) has taken several measures. The reach of FM coverage has increased and is presently available to about 47% of total population. FM radio broadcast for Vividh Bharati in all four metro cities has also been started. Second, AIR disseminates news through its multiple-platforms, ensuring its availability to 99.20% population and 92.76% geographical area of India. Third, AIR has already digitised its 98 studios by replacing production/reproduction equipment and by installing computer-based recording systems. This has improved production and reproduction quality of programmes and increased storage capacity. Additionally, digitisation of 29 studios has also been approved under the 12th plan. Fourth, AIR has replaced its outlived 36 MW/SW transmitters by new solid-state transmitters (Digital Radio Mondiale), which can broadcast in digital form as well.

The coverage areas and quality of broadcast of these transmitters have been restored. Additionally, six high-power transmitters (HPT) providing coverage in Naxal-affected areas have been approved for replacement by new solid-state digital-ready transmitters. Fifth, 127 new state-of-art technology microwave links (for sending programmes from studio to transmitter) have been approved for installation. Lastly, AIR has taken up a mega project called ‘Sanskar Geet’ that encompasses the new genres of folk music of different forlorn areas. This has given a novel dimension to the pubcaster. However, a self-sustained economic model is not entirely possible for AIR as it has to perform as per its mandate under the Prasar Bharati Act, 1990. Being a public broadcaster, it cannot undertake all activities from commercial motives only and hence there will always be a gap between operational expenditure and revenues, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore informed the Rajya Sabha. To serve its mandate effectively, AIR is partially funded through government grant-in-aid. For meeting its entire operational expenses, funding is met from internal resources of Prasar Bharati. This arrangement is on similar lines as funding to public broadcasters, the world over, where bulk of the funding support is met by the government, securing the broadcasters from the vagaries of market forces, Rathore stated.
