Inspiration - In 3 Years, Delhi Cops Have Helped Rescue and Educate 3,000 Street Children

In the span of just over three years, 3,000 street children in Delhi have been rescued and rehabilitated. And it’s all thanks to the efforts of the Delhi police that has joined hands with an NGO to make this possible. Chetna, a group started in 2002, works towards empowering children from underprivileged backgrounds; especially those who are runaways or ones that have been forced to live in the streets and take to a life of petty crimes. In a bid to give these children a second chance at life, the railway wing of the Delhi police connected with Chetna to start an ‘Open Basic Education Programme’ to rehabilitate these children. In fact, they have also started a school in the Nizamuddin police station.

The initiative has become so successful that more children are approaching to be part of it.According to the NGO, since many runaways arrive in Delhi through trains, it is imperative to target railway platforms to find children in need of rescue. They note that about 40-50 such children come every day on trains to Delhi.Maneesha Bhatia, who is a volunteer in this initiative, spoke about it to Hindustan Times saying, “Our objective is to rescue trafficked children, rehabilitate those who are away from their home and prevent them from becoming victims of drug abuse. In the school that operates from the police station, teachers from NGOs take care of children and we have seen encouraging results.”

Children who are rescued are not only given another chance at securing education to help them escape their circumstances, they are also given health check-ups and provided with refreshments. The organisation has also reunited 6,000 children found in railway platforms in the neighbouring regions with their families since 2006.

Sauraj and Samir are heading out for one of their most epic adventures yet. After all, they are on their way to Everest. And along the way, they are also helping Indian soldiers who have been injured in war. Sauraj Jhingan and Samir Nicholas Patham are mountaineers who run their own company called Adventure Pulse. The duo are now self-funding their way to the highest peak in the world in an expedition aptly called Mission Everest-2017 – Soldiering On. They are helping a Pune-based NGO, Queen Mary’s Technical Institute (QMTI) for Differently Abled Soldiers.

He says, “The idea is to generate as much publicity as possible through our Everest mission. We will begin our expedition on March 25 and wrap it up by June 1. We will carry banners and placards of the Pune NGO, urging people to support the institute that works for the welfare of disabled soldiers.”

And the friends, as a show of respect to the country’s soldiers, will be unfurling the Indian flag when they summit the 8,848 metre peak.

Inspiration:Breaking Glass Ceilings in Himachal, This Woman’s a Transporter, Oil Dealer and Owns a Petrol Pump!

Women are defying odds and becoming successful in every field today. If we talk about 2017, women in unconventional careers won’t surprise you. But what if we told you that Himachal Pradesh’s first woman transporter and petrol pump owner started her business way back in 1978? We are talking about Nirmal Sethi, who says she is the only woman to become an Indian Oil dealer in north India.Born in 1951 in the small town of Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, and the third of 11 kids of one of the richest businessmen in the district, no one would have imagined that the family would be known by Nirmal’s name someday.Nirmal was a sharp child right from the beginning. Her father would treat his daughters and sons as equals, and encourage the girls to go out and interact with people. One of Nirmal’s sisters was also captain of Himachal’s women’s hockey team, another won a national award for best teacher, and one broke the mould at the time to become a social worker.

Nirmal finished her schooling from Hamirpur and shifted to Jalandhar to enter college. She got married to an army officer, K.C Sethi, while still in college. After finishing her graduation, Nirmal told her husband about her wish to work in an unconventional field. In those days there were very few options of public transport from Dharamsala to Chintpurni, and very few buses ran this route. Nirmal saw this as an opportunity to start her business as well as to help people. She wanted to start her own transport company. Thus in 1971, Nirmal started Sangam Highways, with one bus travelling from Dharamsala to Chintpurni and back, and became the first woman transporter of the state.Dharamsala was not that developed then. Women were supposed to be either housewives or teachers. However, Nirmal would travel all the way to Chintpurni along with the driver and conductor. She would sometimes just stand by the road and do a surprise check on the bus.By this time, Nirmal also gave birth to her first daughter, Shagun. Her husband kept moving being in the Indian army. However, she managed the transport company all alone, staying back in Dharamsala.

In 1981, Nirmal read an advertisement in the newspaper by the Indian Oil. They were looking for dealers for their first petrol pump in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Nirmal called her husband and told him that she was game for this opportunity but was hesitant as she had never heard of a woman getting the dealership of a petrol pump.Nirmal travelled all alone to Jammu to give the interview to find nearly 2,000 applicants for the deal, and she was the only woman applicant.Back then there were very few personal vehicles like cars and two-wheelers in Himachal. The petrol pumps were mostly visited by bus or truck drivers, and at the interview, Nirmal was asked how she was going to survive in an environment that could be aggressive. Thus Nirmal became the first woman dealer for Indian Oil in North India in 1983.Soon she gave birth to her second child, Khushboo. But being a mother of two children and staying all alone did not stop this feisty lady from expanding her business. She got one oil tanker, which would supply oil to Leh, Ladakh and Kashmir. The oil used to be filled up in Ambala, so every week she would travel to Ambala. She would also personally take the oil tanker to the workshop for regular servicing. Soon, Nirmal was managing eight tankers of her own.

Nirmal also started a Maruti service station just beside her petrol pump and would manage everything on her own, with strong moral support from her husband. In 2005, when her younger daughter was still in college, she lost her husband. At once people thought that this would be the end of her business too as she was shattered. But Nirmal gathered her strength once again, this time with the support of her two daughters, and kept going.Nirmal always wanted to do something for the women of Himachal Pradesh who hardly came out of their houses. She asked many women to join her petrol pump but there was always a negative response.Nirmal’s efforts were fruitful this year when she met Sunita who had lost her husband and was in need of a job. Next came Madhu who also wanted to support her family. Both these women are now working at Dhauladhar petrol pump. Nirmal plans to recruit more women at her petrol pump and as drivers or conductors for her oil tankers in the future. You can contact Nirmal Sethi at nirmalkangra@aol.in or call her on 01892265287.

Sarabhai vs Sarabhai is coming back, how about watching those ’80s serials all over again?

$
0
0
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai is get to return in May. If the lovers of the serial are ecstatic, they have reasons to be so. This reminds one of the golden era of Doordarshan when serials like Hum Log, Buniyaad, Karamchand etc ruled the roost. How about watching them all over again? The 2000s hit sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004-2006) is all set to return in a new avatar in May -- as a web series on Hotstar. The show starring veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah and Satish Shah in pivotal roles, was a laughter riot which people recall even 10 years after it was last aired. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai ran on Star Plus and revolved around the struggles of an upper class family with their middle class daughter-in-law in Mumbai. The family often ran into one problem after another but emerged stronger after each one.

Given the kind of goodwill and expectations the audience has from popular TV serials, wouldn’t it be great to revive some of best-loved serials of the golden years of Indian TV? And if we were to pick the era of 1980s and 1990s, it would inevitably mean serials aired on Doordarshan. In popular culture terms, the ‘80s are often considered the darkest period in Bollywood history. This was the time when the ‘70s big guns, Rajesh and Vinod Khanna, were giving dud after dud and the Khan troika of the ‘90s was yet to rise. Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra looked old and jaded, and Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol and Jackie Shroff were nothing more than occasional flashes in the pan. Sridevi and Jaya Prada weren’t doing anything better either, busy churning out re-runs of their Tamil and Telugu hits for a foothold in mainstream pan-India cinema.

But this was the time when Indian television was warming up to some really good content. Rich in stories, an amazing collection of actors and some truly engaging storytelling meant that television was the place to be.We go down memory lane and revisit some shows that ensured every minute we spent in front of the small screen was totally worth it.

Without a doubt, the king of Indian television! Sunday mornings, with those deserted streets anywhere in India, have never been the same since then. Even today, this BR Chopra-produced multi-starrer remains the benchmark for any mythological TV serial. Such was its popularity that even the BBC telecast it, and this mega serial was dubbed in Tamil, Telugu and Indonesian for viewers as well. Who can forget Mahendra Kapoor’s rendition of the shloka from the Geeta ‘Yadaa yadaa hi dharmasya’ and Harish Bhimani’s narration (he’s also the voice of Samay, if you recall).Written by Manohar Shyam Joshi, Hum Log was India’s first soap opera. Tracing the lives of the members of a lower middle class family, their aspirations and problems would soon find a taker in all. Remember characters like Nanhe, Basesar Ram, Badki and Chutki? Who can forget the monologue at the end of every episode where actor Ashok Kumar discussed the happenings and ended it with the punchline ‘Hum Log’.

Govt. e-Market : Purchase Directly over Internet - Implementation of GeM in North Zone

Implementation of procurement through Government e-Market Portal in North Zone

It has been felt that in case implemented, government e-market (GEM) portal www.gem.gov.in launched by DGS&D in May’2016 may enhance transparency and facilitate realizing e-governance objectives. Since all the items available on DGS&D portal are now available on GEM, adopting procurement through this portal can make the workflow a lot simpler . As the records from placement of order to payment are available online, it is easier to manage and access the records with less effort and produce them for various other mandatory uses like audit etc.

Hence, in view of impressive benefits, IT Division framed the modalities for operationalization of GEM in zonal office under the inspirational leadership of Shri O.K.Sharma, ADG(E-NZ) . We created GEM account on portal in August’2016 and provided facilities so that each section can place order through GEM. Initially, there was difficulty in mandatory provision of payment within 12 working days after receipt of material. Since, PFMS based payment facility is under advanced stage of implementation; there will not be much problem in complying this requirement as well in future. We placed a few orders through GEM and realized that entire exercise is hassle free and user friendly. Hence, it can be said that entire workflow of day to day procurement will become transparent after implementation of PFMS.

Source : sanjay kumar srivastava, sksibes@gmail.com

Other stations who are implementing this Government e-Market Portal may share their experience, which will help others also to move forward.
