How a successful show on doordarshan is educating india on health, gender and social issues
A women-centric edutainment program by NGO Population Fund of India (PFI), which is broadcast on Doordarshan, is celebrating its outstanding success of having reached a viewership of 400 million.Launched in 2014, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon or MKBKSH (meaning I, A Woman, Can Achieve Anything) has had 131 episodes so far that have been aired over two seasons. Translated into 13 different languages, the show has also been aired on 216 AIR radio stations. The show addresses a host of important social, gender and health issues such as sex selection, early marriage, early and repeated pregnancies, under nutrition of girls, domestic violence and sensitisation of boys.
"Never before in the history of Doordarshan has an edutainment show managed to achieve what Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon has. It has had a cumulative reach of close to 400 million plus and counting since the re-telecast is still on. These numbers include the original telecast of the two seasons, a total of 131 episodes, the telecast of the dubbed versions in 13 languages and airing the same content on 216 All India Radio stations and now the re-telecast. So the reach like I mentioned of MKBKSH has been phenomenal,” said Mukesh Sharma, Additional Director General Doordarshan. The story of MKBKSH starts with a young doctor who leaves her lucrative career in Mumbai to work in her village. She works to improve the quality of healthcare provided to the villagers and soon becomes an inspiration for many, mostly women who begin to challenge societal norms.
PFI, which promotes gender-sensitive population policies and programmes, has collaborated with the UNFPA, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UNICEF to rebrand and promote the Government of India’s peer educator program reaching an estimated 8,00,000 peer educators. In its second season, the show focuses on several adolescent issues mentioned in the peer program like menstruation, nightfall, early marriage, delaying first pregnancy, nutrition and mental health. The show's success's has also prompted for it to be re-telecast on Doordarshan every day at 3:30 pm.
"When we started this show we had concerns about how the show would be looked at, but after 131 episodes and two extremely successful seasons, we realised that the response from the people has been so encouraging. It is an attempt to fight hierarchy and patriarchy at various levels and given the show’s success, we feel that the impact is being felt at the grass root level," Feroz Abbas Khan, director of MKBKSH, said.
https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifThe makers are now even contemplating a third season for the show given popularity and reach.

With a Staggering 400 Million Viewers, This DD Serial Is India’s Most Watched TV Show. Here’s Why.
This Monday, Doordarshan announced that its edutainment show, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon, had set a new record by reaching out to a staggering 400 million viewers, the highest viewership of any show currently on Indian television.Launched on March 8, 2014, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon garnered such an overwhelming following within two months that Doordarshan decided to telecast the serial on DD India, reaching out to over 50 countries across the globe. Its sky-high TRPs also put DD in the third place among all entertainment channels in the given time slot, every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10.30 am on DD India, and every Saturday and Sunday at 7 pm on DD National.
Produced by Population Foundation of India (PFI), with support from Department for International Development (DFID), Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon tells the compelling story of Dr Sneha, a young Indian woman who thrives on challenges. Emotionally torn between professional aspirations and personal commitments, between society and family, this young woman’s struggles and triumphs form the core theme of this remarkable soap opera.Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon also challenges deep rooted social issues such as gender insensitivity, child marriage, early pregnancies, domestic violence, female stereotyping and sex selection. Despite being a fictional format TV show, it is based on real statistics, case studies and facts collected during a year-long research in villages conducted by PFI.
Today, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon has been translated into 13 languages and aired on 216 AIR stations across the country. After an equally impactful and successful second season on television, the makers are now contemplating a third season of the show that has been endorsed by stars like Farhan Akhtar, Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan.To increase its outreach in rural India, the producers have also partnered with Gram Vaani (citizen-driven media platform working in rural areas) to launch an Integrated Voice Response System (IVRS). In simple terms, this is a call-back number that helps viewers participate in discussions, give their suggestions and share their personal stories. Till date, over 2,00,000 calls have been received from viewers eager to share their thoughts, experiences and suggestions.
Mumbai-based theatre and film director and the creative force behind the show, Feroz Abbas Khan says, “I have directed this serial with great passion as the cause is close to my heart and it is fantastic to see the serial being viewed by people across the globe. My team has also gone all out to ensure that the serial resonates with the people. So, it motivates all of us immensely when we hear a girl from Kashmir say that the character of Dr Sneha Mathur has inspired her to be a police officer.”However, the impact of the show goes beyond just viewership numbers. The Health Ministry’s recently launched Saathiya Resource Kit (specially designed to help address queries of adolescents, especially in villages, on reproductive and sexual health, substance abuse and mental health among other issues concerning their age) has been inspired from the way the show addressed the issue of sex education in Season 2.
For instance, to address sensitive issues under reproductive health, the show-makers created a game show (called Kishor Ka Shor) within the series where participants would share their problems with peer educators. This idea was replicated in the Saathiya initiative. In fact, the kit has six films that were part of the show and even the name ‘Saathiya’ was suggested by the show-makers.This careful, easily relatable and well-researched approach has emerged as the key to the show’s success. Interestingly, the show is itself inspired from South Africa’s longest running edutainment programme, Soul City, that mirrors the social and development challenges faced by poor communities everywhere.
Other than bringing about a change in the attitudes of its audience, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hu
has also encouraged countless women across India to empower themselves. Inspired by Dr. Sneha (the show’s protagonist played by actress Meinal Vaishnav), Ladkunwar Khushwaha from Bundelkhand became the first girl from her village in to go to college. In Bairiya village in Bihar, women have been inspired by the show to create a support group that meets every week to discuss issues like domestic violence, sanitation and education. Over 400 similar support groups, called Sneha Clubs (consisting of various stakeholders like school teachers, educators, ASHAs, and NGO representatives), have been established by PFI and their partner NGOs across Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon today is more than just a trans-media development communications initiative. It is a call for women to stand up for their rights to complete their education, marry at the right age, space and use contraception to plan their families, and for men to be responsible towards the health of their families and accept that women too, can achieve anything they want. The spectacular success of Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon is a case in point that education through entertainment is one of the most successful ways of bringing about a positive change in the attitudes of people around difficult social norms. People have grown to trust the powerful messages of this very popular programme. This fact, coupled with Doordarshan’s phenomenal penetration in rural India, leaves little doubt that this show can be a game-changer in the field of media-based social action.

Inspiration-Doctors Told Nancy She Would Never Walk Again, but This Brave Young Girl Refused to Give up Hope.
Paralysis after an accident can be a difficult reality to accept, especially for active individuals. However, Nancy, a young girl, refused to accept her paralysis as a final diagnosis, eventually regaining movement through sheer determination and will.
Nancy was a bright student at a renowned university. She was among those students who balanced academics with extra-curricular activities perfectly. Her jovial nature attracted instant positivity. She was also liked by her teachers for her good nature and zeal to achieve her goals. But one accident turned her life upside down. One day, while enjoying an evening on the terrace of her hostel, Nancy lost balance, slipped, and fell. She was immediately rushed to the hospital. The doctors recommended surgery as she had injured her spinal cord.Though the surgery was successful, a lot of damage had been done already. The doctors informed her parents that her lower limbs would never respond. But Nancy was determined to move. She refused to accept her physical condition as her ultimate fate. Her parents supported her determination.
Nancy shares, “The doctors told me I would not walk again. It felt like my world had collapsed. I could not accept that I would have to be bed-ridden forever. I was determined to walk again.”The doctors, despite knowing about her condition, wanted to believe in her faith. Nancy and her family continued to observe every small change in her body. But after six long months of disappointment, they were almost ready to give up their hopes. They thought it was time to get realistic and accept that Nancy would not be able to move again. While such thoughts occupied their mind, the awaited thing happened. Nancy’s toes showed slight movement. The doctors were shocked, as they had had no hopes for improvement. Nancy remembers the day clearly, “It was one of those days when I was observing my legs, expecting some movement. I was disappointed, but then something happened—I saw my toes move a little. I was in seventh heaven!”
The little movement of her toes motivated Nancy as well as the doctors. Today, two years since the surgery, Nancy is able to walk properly. She has been determined, and worked hard to live a normal life.
Nancy is a great motivator for all those who have had an accident, or lost the hope of getting better. She hopes her personal experience will help reaffirm her message, “Miracles happen when you don’t stop trying.”

Madurai: Rural students thrilled as they go on AIR
For 22 rural students of the Manicka Vasagam Middle School in Devakottai, it was a dream come true when they spoke and sang on All India Radio (AIR), Madurai. The students performed on March 8 for nearly 60 minutes.
“All along I have only heard others speak or sing from a radio in our house. When they took me inside the studio it brought new energy to me,” said Dhanalakshmi, class VIII student of the school. She narrated the historical legacy of Deevakottai town and the Meenakshi Amman temple. “I want everyone to know that many streets and roads are named after freedom fighters from our town,” said the student.
“I have lost stage fear. Hereafter I will face the audience from the stage with confidence,” said Krithika, a class IV student. She sang religious hymns and poems on science in the studio.
School headmaster L Chokkalingam arranged a special government bus to bring the children along with 16 parents to the studio. “A few parents visited Madurai for the first time with their children. They were overwhelmed to witness their children singing in front of the mike,” said the headmaster. Class teachers assisted the students to improve their extracurricular skills after class hours to participate in such programmes.
Pon Dhanabalan, programme executive, AIR, Madurai said that they were giving a chance to three schools in rural and small towns each month, to help students express their talents in two programmes allocated for them.

Inspiration-Meet Ramesh Babu, the Billionaire Barber Who Owns 400+ Cars, Including BMWs, Jaguars a Rolls Royce.
Ramesh Babu’s office in Ejipura, Bengaluru is filled with miniature cars. There are mini Mercs, a Rolls Royce and even a few vintage models. “I have collected these from many cities and countries over 24 years and added some here when we started the office three years ago. My son has a bigger collection at home,” says the collector.
Collecting model cars isn’t an uncommon hobby, but Ramesh isn’t just a regular collector. Lined outside his office are dozens of luxury cars — full-sized, not miniatures — some not even available in India, all part of Ramesh Tours & Travels, which started when Ramesh, a barber, invested in his first car in 1993.His enviable fleet of luxury cars-on-rent, and his incredible story of success and determination has earned Ramesh the title of Billionaire Barber.
Born and raised in Bengaluru, Ramesh lost his father at an early age, in the year 1979, and found his family mired in conflict and poverty. “My father left a saloon in Brigade Road. My uncle took care of it and paid us each day,” the entrepreneur recalls. Those early years weren’t easy, as Ramesh, his mother, grandmother and siblings struggled for even basic essentials like food and clothing.“My mother took a job as a maid and earned that was used for everything, including our fees, books, clothes, and everything,” he says. “We got new clothes once a year and we managed the rest with school uniforms and old clothes. Once I was sent back by my PT teacher because my trousers were torn, but I couldn’t afford a new one. We had only one meal every day in the afternoon from what my mother got from work. Getting a good meal during a festival was one of our happiest moments.”Ramesh’s family had steady breakfasts, in addition to their single meal, for the first time when he took up a job delivering newspapers at the age of 13. He continued his studies while supporting his family, till his pre-university years when he took over the saloon, named Inner Space, from his uncle.
Ramesh stepped into business with no resources except the determination to succeed. He used family savings to renovate the saloon and roped in two workers to run the place. It was the earnings from his saloon that led him to buy his first car and paved the way for a venture that has grown exponentially in two decades.
“I always wanted to buy a car,” says Ramesh, adding that his first vehicle — a Maruti van — was intended for personal use. To get a loan, he had to take his grandfather’s help and raise a mortgage on the family house. The purchase came with steep EMIs and Ramesh began to rent out his car to raise the amount. “I’d sit in my saloon and customers would often take the car on rent,” he says. He received his first business contract from Intel, through a family for whom his mother worked since he was a child.
As he slowly but steadily gathered a sizeable customer base, Ramesh realised the potential of operating a high-end automobile rental service and began to build a fleet of cars.Today, Ramesh Tours & Travels boasts a fleet of over 400 cars next to models of BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and the highly prized Rolls-Royce Ghost.Ramesh recently became the third person in Bengaluru to buy the Mercedes-Maybach S600, which stands in his company garage. “Everything has been a journey of hard work. If my drivers weren’t around I’d drive the cars myself,” says the entrepreneur. Media reports often mention his love for his Rolls-Royce, but procuring the car landed him in one of his greatest challenges as a business owner.
Ramesh Tours & Travels now also operates in Chennai and Delhi, and the entrepreneur hopes to conquer Hyderabad and Vijaywada next. The team is also working on maximising the company’s online presence. Along with a jaw-dropping fleet, his endeavours have earned Ramesh many awards but come mornings and over the weekends, you will still find him giving haircuts at his salon .
“It has been a tough journey, but everything has ups and downs,” says the man who has truly earned his title of billionaire barber. “I have always told myself to work harder and everything comes together.
