Keeping this in mind, the All India Radio (AIR) is commencing a new show — Understanding and Managing Natural Disasters — on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. Comprising 26 episodes in Kannada, the programme will be aired every Sunday between 9.05am and 9.35am on the AIR stations in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Bhadravathi, Dharwad and Kalaburagi.
Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), Vigyan Prasar (department of science and technology), government of India and AIR Bengaluru have jointly taken up the initiative to spread awareness on natural calamities and their adverse effects on life and the environment.

"All episodes, scripted in the form of a dramatic representation, will see four recurring characters playing the roles of members in a family. A guest character will serve as the medium of spreading awareness about the disaster being showcased," said S Subramanian, secretary, KSCST. "The script for each episode has been written by experts from different institutions across the state," he added. "A dramatic representation will make the programme more engaging for listeners. Every year, our radio programmes are themed differently. With a series of natural disasters having struck the country in the past few months, we wanted to start such a show. Each episode has been divided into 25 minutes of drama, 2 minutes of recap and 3 minutes of interaction with listeners," said Sumangala Mummigatti, project director, AIR and producer of the show.
