“Young people having the courage to jump inside the ring create history,” said Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi while addressing youngsters at the All India Radio’s Welcome to Studio One programme. In conversation with Archana Datta, former DG, News AIR, Satyarthi talked about his struggles and the contentment of being a child rights activist. From giving up a career in engineering to having faced obstacles at every step, there was no looking back for Satyarthi. He spoke about his desire to make a change and how charity never was his aim. On being asked what inspired him , he said that all pervasive ignorance about child labour and human trafficking pushed him to work for change. Apart from rescuing children, policy intervention is one thing Satyarthi looks forward to, both locally and globally. What bothers him, is the misplaced priorities of the system. which should be the youth and children, but they are far long from that. He also highlighted major issues under which lack of power and knowledge leads to misuse or no use of laws. The activist always looked up to non violent ways and believed in the power of education. Along with movements like Bachpan Bachao Andolan, he runs various rehabilitation centres as well. He shared his concern over the fact that child trafficking is the biggest illegal trade in the world. In his meetings with decision making people, Stayarthi asks for only one thing, “I ask them to invest and save just one generation and the rest will be protected too.” Sure this one generation scheme looks promising enough.
The activist defined development as a state of awareness which can only be attained through education. On his Nobel achievement, Satyarthi stated, “Nobel Peace prize is a comma in my life and not the full stop” and that he shall never quit the hard work which made him worthy of this honour. The show will be broadcast on May 1 on the General Overseas Services of All India Radio.
