The UN General assembly has designated 23rd June as Public Service Day with an intention to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community, highlight the contribution of public service in the development process, recognize the work of public servant and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
Akashvani and Doordarshan with their hundreds of stations spread throughout the country are not merely broadcasting for entertainment but they are doing so also for educating and empowering the masses.
If you consider AIR and Doordashan merely a broadcaster, then this day may not be of much significance for them, but that’s not the case. Whereas most of other broadcasters may work as an industry, AIR has a much different primary aim which rings clearly in its motto “Bahujan Hitay, Bahujan Sukhay” i.e. for the (Hitay) benefit of the masses and for the (Sukhay) happiness of the masses. Hence the UN public service broadcasting day 23rd June becomes highly significant for AIR & DD and the persons working in it.
In any democracy, the voice of the people is most important and Prasar Bharati as for true public service broadcaster carries the voice of the VIPs and the public at large on its airways. Thus, 23rd June is a day to recognize the work of thousands of engineers, programmers and all other colleagues of the Indian Public Service Broadcaster and Prasar Bharati who are working tirelessly in remote locations like Leh, Tawang, Tura, Aizwal, Portblair, Srinagar, Kargil, Barmer, Kavaratti etc to shrug the vast population of our country.
Prasar Bharati parivar congratulates all of them and extend its choicest best wishes for them and their family.
