Cancer, an ailment as deadly as it can get, is also extremely expensive to treat. Mangalam Foundation in Navi Mumbai, however, is emphasising on philanthropy over money, going all out to help the afflicted by providing them and their families with free accommodation throughout the duration of the treatment.
As part of this initiative, Mangalam Foundation has leased out 17 apartments near Tata Memorial Hospital and Research Centre in Sector 27, Kharghar, which can be used as accommodation for the patients and their families. The foundation is also providing meals to these families at just Rs 10.
This foundation was started around 10 years ago and has more than 40 volunteers, all investing their own money. They got to understand that people who come to Mumbai for medical treatments face a lot of difficulty in finding suitable accommodation during their time in the city, adding to their troubles.Naresh Gupta, a trust member at Mangalam Foundation, spoke with the Times of India,We have made 17 flats available. While the accommodation is free, meals have to be purchased for Rs 10. We wanted to find accommodation close to Tata Hospital in Kharghar, and once we zeroed in on a premise, we spoke to the developer who willingly leased the rooms.
The team is looking to accommodate more people as the existing flats are already full. Apart from that, they are also in touch with the transport authorities, asking them to launch a few bus services from the area to Parel and back.
