Doordarshan Kendra , Calcutta, then located in the old Radha Film studio I. Tollygunge near the tram Depot, was the first television centre where I worked only for a few months. The then Director Ms. MIra Mozoomdar and Supdtg Engineer PT Srinivasan and a host of old colleagues like. Abhijit Dasgupta were extremely nice to me in learning the initial lessons of television. We had run across a dear old colleague of mine in Payyanur College, Shanta Menon and he husband Purushothaman who made life very pleasant for us in Calcutta. We are still looking for their contact details. I share the joy of Calcutta experience in today's New Indian Express.........

Feeling one with the City of Joy

My first posting with national broadcaster Doordarshan was at Calcutta in 1977. A friend wired about a booked flat, and so my wife and three year-old son accompanied me from Kerala to Kolkata. Our luggage, which we sent through a packers and movers company, reached us — you won’t believe it — just a week prior to my transfer to Chennai after a five-month stint in Kolkata!................

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE - Ericsson unveils world's first 5G New Radio

Swedish communication technology and services giant Ericsson announced on Wednesday it would launch the worlds first commercial 5G New Radio (NR) incorporating multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology and multi-user MIMO, with the first deployments coming in 2017. Together with the Ericsson 5G Plug-Ins announced in June this year and its commercially available Radio System Baseband 5216 -- which currently powers Ericsson`s award-winning Radio Test Bed -- the company is first to deliver all components of a 5G access network, it said in a statement. "We are introducing the new hardware that 5G Plug-Ins will run on so that the first operators can start to deploy 5G infrastructure. We are also launching innovations that improve both the performance and efficiency of today`s networks using concepts that will evolve into 5G," informed Arun Bansal, Head of Business Unit Network Products, Ericsson.

The "AIR 6468" 5G radio combines advanced antennas with a large number of steerable ports to enable 5G technologies of beamforming, Massive MIMO and multi-user MIMO. "As we accelerate toward 5G, it`s beneficial to have a flexible radio platform that can be deployed not only for LTE, but also versions of future 5G NR standards," said Tom Keathley, Senior Vice President, Wireless Network Architecture and Design, AT&T. These capabilities improve user experience while enhancing the capacity and coverage of the network and reducing interference. The new radio provides LTE support as well.

"Massive-MIMO, also known as 3D MIMO, is an important milestone in China Mobile`s technology road-map from 4G to 5G. We are happy that Ericsson`s new radio product is coming to market soon to meet our needs and enable us to integrate 5G technologies into our existing networks," added Huang Yuhong, Deputy Head, China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI). To support new network builds, Ericsson has also created the industry`s first Industrialised Network Rollout Services solution.

Dr KC Sinha, ADP, HOO was given an emotional Farewell on his transfer. He had joined AIR Darbhanga in mid 2015. Recently he was promoted to the post of ADP. Inspiration - A social worker, a social activist, “Mother of Orphans”, she is Sindhutai Sapkal......

One of the greatest services that a man can do in his lifetime is rendering service to mankind. It is said that service to mankind is service to God. Men come and go, but it is always their great deeds that are remembered and have a long-lasting impression on others’ minds. Thankfully, our nation is truly blessed with some great men and women, who are known for their services to humanity: Mahatma Gandhi, Iswar Chandra Vidysagar, Mother Teresa and Baba Amte are just to name a few. In modern India, too, we have some people who have dedicated their lives to serve others, to serve humanity.

Sindhutai Sapkal, Mother of Orphans

A social worker, a social activist, “Mother of Orphans”, she is Sindhutai Sapkal, known for raising orphan children. A living legend, she has helped more than a thousand impoverished children. At a very young age of 20, she was thrown out of her house by her husband. With an infant baby girl in her hands, she had no one to turn to. Her parents were poor. Initially, she wanted to end her gruesome life, but then during this period of homelessness, she came to see the pathetic conditions of the street children and orphans. She then decided not to give up hope and fight against the cruelty of India’s male dominated society. Soon she started her life again with full vigour and confidence by resolving to give the orphan children a better and decent life. Years passed by and the number of orphans and street children under her care kept on increasing. With a smile on her face, with courage and determination she helped hundreds of children and also encouraged few others to join her. She was not known to the outside world as she did her work silently. It was the Marathi film “Mee Sindhutai Sapkal” on her life and works in 2010 that made people to know her. She has been honoured for several times since then. Till date, she has given home and motherly care to more than 1000 children and some of these orphans have grown up to be doctors and lawyers. She uses all the money that she receives from charity in helping and providing education to orphans. Thus she has been rightly named the ‘Mother of Orphans’.

In an effort to serve major part of our country’s farming community, national broadcaster Doordarshan is set to turn DD Kisan — a dedicated television channel for farmers — into a multilingual one. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May last year as part of the completion of one year of the NDA government in office, the channel currently broadcasts programmes only in Hindi.Sources stated that the step comes after demands from several regions of the country for programmes in local languages. It is understood that the public broadcaster is aiming to increase the viewership of the farming channel beyond the Hindi heartland.Sources stated that the plans are being laid out for improving quality of DD Kisan’s content and attracting more viewers. It is learnt that a phase-wise introduction of language programmes is expected to be made soon.
