Inspirational: CoronaWarrior: Tiruppur IAS Provides Weekly Rations to 62,000 Migrant Labourers

$

The workers are the driving force of Tiruppur and I could not have them suffer during such a huge crisis,” says district collector Dr K Vijayakarthikeyan

Daily wage labourers, migrant workers and marginalised communities across India have been grievously affected by the steps to flatten the curve. In Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and other cities, thousands are going hungry, sleeping in filthy spaces under bridges, facing apathy from employers, people and authorities alike. Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, the hapless workers can neither go back home nor survive this lockdown.

However, at the other end of the spectrum are scores of officials and people coming together to help the needy in the doldrums. Like the case in Tiruppur, the textile city of Tamil Nadu, where District Collector, IAS Dr K Vijayakarthikeyan is spearheading a relief kit distribution initiative to ensure that factory workers stay well-fed and safe.

The city has a population of around 3 lakh workers from Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. With strict lockdown rules implemented all over the country, many of these workers are now stranded, some even without the means to have a decent meal.

To assimilate and organise the information on workers and centrally-monitor all the relief activities Vijayakarthikeyan first set up a control room.

“We have categorised the workers into three groups. One where the employers take care of the accommodation and food. The second group consists of labourers who get food and essentials but do not have accommodation. The third category is of workers who have neither. Our focus is on the last,” the officer informs.

He also made sure to employ multilingual operators in the control room to communicate with the labourers from a diverse background. Whenever they receive a lead about a worker or a community of workers going hungry, the control room gets to work. With over 1,200 volunteers and government officials spread all across the district of Tiruppur, the control room operators have to assign specific tasks to the right person.

“We verify the details of the workers as soon as we get the call. Among the things we ask is how much their employers are providing. Those who have been abandoned or left without pay are given utmost priority. There are many who are not on permanent payroll. Our aim is to ensure their safety first,” Vijayakarthikeyan.

Once the information is verified, the operators get in touch with the local authorities or volunteers and delegate the task to them.

AIR goes innovative to keep listeners update on COVID - AIR Vijaywada

AIR Vijayawada Station Director - G. K. Rao

At the time of cyclone Kathai, the All-India Radio, Vijayawada, Station Director Guttikonda Kondala Rao had received a phone call from the State Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) with a plea to somehow reach out to 35-odd fishermen in Prakasam district who ventured into the sea for a catch in five boats.

“Our news bulletin was over and so we made the announcement about the impending cyclone in the middle of a song on FM Rainbow Krishnaveni. The message reached the fishermen and they immediately returned to their homes,” says Mr. Rao with a satisfactory smile.

That’s the reach of radio, a broadcast medium that can be accessed anywhere, anytime and by anybody. Utilising this engaging and social nature of radio and its powerful connection with its audience, All India Radio, Vijayawada, has been trying to mitigate pain and suffering of people on account of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Rao has been on his toes designing innovative programmes to keep the community up to date with the developments, constantly advising people on the practical steps to be taken to reduce the impact of the virus, besides creating additional slots to squeeze in 'COVID-19' news bulletins.

Catchy musicals

Catchy jingles being a tried and tested means to get across a message loud and clear, Mr. Rao has composed five of these short and brief spurt of musicals on the key aspects of the pandemic like on the need to wash hands properly and frequently, social distancing and eating ‘right’ in the lockdown period.

All the five jingles are in Telugu with sub-titles in English. Encouraged by the popularity, Mr. Rao has created more of them, this time both in Telugu and in English. “We have been broadcasting interviews of the subject experts from All-India Institute of Medical Sciences who talk about key aspects related to the pandemic and the precautions to be observed,” he says.

The Akasavani has increased the time slot of 'COVID' news bulletin from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. It broadcasts new bulletins at 5.40 a.m, 11 am, 1.20 p.m, 3.00 p.m. and at 5.05 p.m.

The public radio broadcaster has also been effectively talking about the large-scale relief work in progress, both by the government and by private organisations. “There is so much good work happening around and we make it a point to talk about it so others draw inspiration from them,” he explains.

For last few days, the Akasavani has been broadcasting classroom lessons for 10th class students of the social welfare schools to prepare them for the Board examinations in view of the lockdown. A similar proposal is being contemplated for college students also.

Tune in to All India Radio’s classic radio plays
on their YouTube channel

All India Radio has directed stations across the country to broadcast radio plays on the digital platform

Listen to actors Mohanlal, MG Soman, Karamana Janardanan Nair, Jagadish, Bhagyalakshmy and Aranmula Ponnamma in a radio play Jeevanulla Prathimakal (1993). Perhaps the first radio play of Mohanlal’s, the play is among ten iconic radio plays that have been uploaded on the YouTube channel of All India Radio to connect with listeners during the lockdown.

This is part of nation-wide directive given by All India Radio (Akashvani) to its stations. Akashavani Thiruvananthapuram uploaded all the plays on April 21. “Akashvani has had a tradition of broadcasting plays since its inception and they have been popular until other means of entertainment came in. It was Shashi Shekhar Vempati, CEO of Prasar Bharati, who suggested that the lockdown should be seen as a period to revive people’s interest in the plays. That’s when it was decided to bring some of the best works into the public domain,” says Amlanjyoti Majumdar, director, External Services Division, All India Radio (AIR). He says that while regional stations have started uploading plays separately, AIR has plans to centralise the same on its official YouTube channel, where they will be categorised on the basis of language.

Among the plays uploaded by Akashavani Thiruvananthapuram are works by legendary playwrights and writers of Malayalam such as Kainikkara Kumara Pillai, TN Gopinathan Nair, Nagavally RS Kurup, N Krishnapillai, P Padmarajan and Pirappancode Murali. Famous voice-artistes and actors such as TP Radhamony, Bhagyalakshmy, KPAC Sulochana, MP Manmadhan, TR Omana and Saraswathy Amma can be heard at their best in these plays. Also on the list are adaptations of significant literary works, such as those of Perumbadavam Sreedharan’s Oru Sankeerthanam Pole, William Shakespeare’s Othello and Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace (Yuddhavum Samadhanavum, broadcast in 1963).
Voice of the stars
During the annual radio drama festival, mainstream actors are also roped in to be part of the productions and some of these star-studded productions from yesteryears have been included in the playlist. One of them is Ithilkkanni, first broadcast in the early 60s. It has lyricist P Bhaskaran and actors Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Jose Prakash, Sheela and Adoor Bhasi in the cast. The family drama was written by N Krishnapillai and directed by TN Gopinathan Nair.

Jeevanulla Prathimakal (1993), written by M Rajeevkumar, former programme executive in AIR, and directed by Satheesh Chandran, focusses on man’s conflict with nature, which is told through the story of a group of people who are out to hunt birds. “The content was well ahead of its time,” remembers Jagadish, who has acted in many radio plays. He adds that since the film actors were busy with their film assignments, the play was partly recorded in Kozhikode.

Translations of plays that were broadcast as part of monthly national drama festival have also been uploaded. One such play is Upayogashoonyamaakunna Shabdarekhakal, translation of a Bengali play, directed by N Vasudev, programme executive of the station. “Radio plays had dedicated listeners. The plays in this list belong to different genres,” says Vasudev

AIR has over 10,000 plays in its collection. “Besides languages that come under the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution, we air content in 179 dialects as well. Plays in these dialects are based around culture and lifestyle of that community and thus we have a repository on the tradition and culture of our country,” Amlanjyoti says.

A few Malayalam plays were uploaded on YouTube even before the lockdown. According to an official with Akashavani Thiruvananthapuram, some of these plays have got more views after the lockdown, an example being Copper Beaches-the Sherlock Holmes series directed by Vasudev.

AIR’s Dawn Chorus to ring across globe:News Report.

On Sunday, May 3, All India Radio (AIR) will air morning songs of birds from around the globe to spread a message of hope and a victory over odds.

May 3 is International Dawn Chorus day, and every year the morning melodies of birds is broadcast live by radio channels. The spectacular live broadcast moves from one country to another, from east to west, along with the sun’s rays.

However, with Covid-19 ravaging many countries, live broadcasts have become difficult and Ireland’s RTE radio and the European Broadcasting Union (which represents radio companies across 56 countries) , prime movers behind the project, decided to cal it off this year.

However, the country’s own All India Radio (AIR), decided to step forward. AIR’s External Service Division (ESD) decided to put forward its own crowd sourced dawn chorus

India had been participating in the EBU-RTE dawn chorus event for the past four years. We were looking forward this year also. But when we learnt that the dawn chorus may not happen because of coronavirus related concerns, we considered taking our own crowd-sourced version to the global level,” said a senior AIR official who asked not to be named

The official said AIR wrote to several broadcasters many of whom sent in their own crowd-sourced recordings.

“There has been a response from the European Broadcasting Union, BBC Scotland, Bangladesh,

Around 22 countries from the EBU have already sent recordings which are also crowd-sourced.

AIR’s recordings and compilation will be sent to broadcasters in at least 20 countries that have shown interest and many of them will be telecasting the crowd-sourced chorus this year, according to the official.

“The programme used to happen once a year but this year, it was not happening the way it did. We thought it would be interesting, because the regular dawn chorus was not happening, to ask for recordings from others,” said Shashi Shekhar Vempati, CEO of Prasar Bharati.

Prasar Bharati has taken a lead in this year’s dawn chorus. The recordings we have taken through crowd-sourcing and which have been shared by other broadcasters will be aired on the 3rd of May. The recordings will also be shared with other broadcasters who will air them according to their requirements,” said Amlanjyoti Majumdar, Director of the External Service Division of AIR.

AIR Jaipur takes listeners down memory lane

To evoke nostalgia among its listeners at the time of lockdown, All India Radio (AIR) Jaipur has started broadcasting old dramas, skits, folk music from its archives.

Inspired by Doordarshan, that has recently started broadcasting Ramayana and Mahabharat for its viewers during lockdown, AIR has started broadcasting decades-old content from their archival library on radio as well as its YouTube channel. There are thousands of such tapes in the library of AIR, Jaipur, which are now being taken out and their sound quality being measured, which are then converted into digital form and uploaded on YouTube.

Additional director general (west zone), Neeraj Aggarwal explained, “We have more than 400 dramas in our archives in Jaipur. They are in Hindi, Urdu and Sindhi languages and broadcasting them at the time of lockdown, we are getting a good response. Folk songs of Manganiyars and Langa community are preserved in our archives. Radio has a vast reach, to every remote corner of the state, which is what we are now making use of. The response has been good from the present-day artistes and the older generation who had listened to these dramas at that time.”

Jaipur radio started in 1955 and has evolved in all these years with change in technology. Dramas in earlier times were recorded by the artistes in the drama studio at the radio station. Reshma Khan, programme head of AIR Jaipur, who has been working for radio for the last 35 years, recalled the times when for special effects, the artistes used their creativity.
“For sound of water splashing, artistes would go to an actual pond. For horses tapping, they would go to MI Road, where many tongas used to run. We still have those recorded sounds in our archival library. Of course, times have changed and now we have special effects for everything. We are in the process of digitalizing the tapes. Amidst lockdown, CEO Prasar Bharti Shashi Shekhar in Delhi, asked us to search our records to be uploaded online, to make the present generation aware about our rich history,” said Khan.

AIR Jaipur is also running a morning show from 9am to 10am everyday called, ‘Hum Hongen Kamyab’ in which they broadcast live the efforts made by health workers, struggle stories and success stories amidst the pandemic.
