Solving the Medium-Wave Problem

$
0
0

Is medium wave in decline? Some people think so.
In the 1950s radio was declared mortally wounded by TV. But then FM with its new music rescued it, becoming one of the most successful technologies and platforms ever. Radio survived and thrived but AM should have died at the hands of the nimbler, younger and more attractive FM. Only it did not and the medium reinvented itself by using presenter-led programming, commercial music and sport. In the United States it took until the end of 1990s for the FM and AM audiences to be equal and to this day the big AM stations are going strong, bringing in the ad dollars.

REASONS
Still, it’s undeniable that the whiff of decline has enveloped AM in the past two decades. The reasons are well-known: Analog medium wave doesn’t always deliver the best sound, it can suffer from interference, it can behave annoyingly different by day and night and even by season. Medium wave mainly appeals to a maturing population (a global phenomenon, considered shameful by some!) using aging receivers (this is bad!). Analog medium-wave broadcasting also needs quite an infrastructure and deep pockets for the electricity bill. On the other hand, medium wave is that middle sister that delivers by giving excellent regional coverage over hundreds or (overnight and if the ionosphere behaves) even thousands of kilometers, whereas FM goes up to roughly 200 kilometers and digital DAB+ to half of that.

Medium wave is not only a regional but also an excellent local coverage solution. In Australia 33% of the public broadcaster ABC’s local transmitters broadcast in AM and 11 50 kW transmitters are serving the mainland capital or big cities. Medium wave covers large areas and reaches small far-flung communities for whom, even in developed countries, medium wave and FM still provide the first source of information. Besides, medium wave with its reach, availability outdoors and on the go, is a fallback solution in times of emergency or simply a good standby solution when other platforms or services are unavailable (broadband, satellite, 4G or the mythical 5G). The listeners’ behavior and the demands of the digital world are such that tackling medium wave has elicited different responses from broadcasters and regulators worldwide. In Europe, where the frequency was much used and abused, broadcasters initially energized by the potential of IP have not thought twice about closing down many medium-wave transmitters. Some have survived the cull, for example, in the UK, France, Spain, or in some eastern European countries.

DIFFERENT SCENARIOS
Regulators in other parts of the world have embraced different scenarios. One was to migrate AM to FM, or AM to a digital solution for FM (HD or DAB+). This process has taken a long time and, despite some successes, has shown it’s no replacement for AM or for a full large regional or national coverage. In other parts of the world, like Brazil, digital was not even part of the mix. The simple migration AM to FM is plodding on there, as this is easier done in smaller places than in bigger, overpopulated ones, like big cities where there is no FM spectrum available and where the original demand for a solution came from. Another idea is to expand the FM band, downwards, migrate everyone and forget about AM altogether, as FM seems a proven and winning formula. A nice idea but then, on top of the costs of replacing a large area covering transmitter with many, expensive, spectrum and energy hungry FM transmitters, there is the extra challenge of the new receivers to be produced and actually sold.

Certainly, there is also the option of doing nothing. Reading through the most recent submissions to the judicious consultation launched by the Australian regulator on the future delivery of radio services, I was struck by how some contributors claim that there is no current replacement for analog AM. Their scenario is to leave things as they are, for at least the next 10 years. Change is though the name of the radio game. While analog AM will subsist, it is worth looking at other options, too. In India where most of the territory and population are covered by the public radio medium-wave transmitter infrastructure, the government and public broadcaster took the bull by the horns and deployed almost 40 digital transmitters covering about half the country population with a digital signal.

THE SOLUTION
Recently cricket fans were able to enjoy an open-air demonstration of three different DRM programs on one frequency ahead of an important match in Bangalore. The fans also received data (stock exchange values) available on radio screens. This demonstrated that digital DRM is a game changer for medium wave. In DRM the crackling audio disappears as sound is as good of that on FM. The electricity consumption and costs decrease, the spectrum is trebled and reception, even in cars (as available in over 1.5 million cars in India currently) is excellent, too. If it is so good then why isn’t DRM medium wave conquering the world faster? Maybe it’s about confidence in a new platform. Broadcasters and governments need to market DRM digital radio once signals are on air in their countries.

As for receiver availability and their costs, let us remember how many receivers were on sale in the 1970s when FM was taking over the world. Nowadays, many listeners consume radio in their cars rather than sit in front of a retro looking wooden box. Digital receivers (DRM alone or DRM/DAB+) are a reality and a bigger push for digital would help with volumes sold thus bringing down the prices. Radio, and therefore medium wave, can and should survive digitally. Digital radio must be an enabler of audio content and information while preserving its ubiquitous and unmatched advantage of providing a service for all. For that, a bit of imagination, trust and, last but not least, some long-term investment is necessary. Because medium wave is still worth it!

Inspirational:Married at 16, Widowed at 20: Single Mom Helps 600+ Families Lead Better Lives!

“For almost two nights, I had to sleep at Bengaluru’s Majestic bus stop with my youngest child burning up with fever. I didn’t know what to do other than crying helplessly, until someone showed me kindness. That was my turning point.”

They say that an act of kindness never lives in isolation. A ripple of change always follows it. And, that’s exactly what happened with Sifiya Haneef.
A native of Palakkad, Sifiya had just lost her husband, and in her sorrow, she was trying to gather the strength to support her two sons. Her parents urged her to live with them or maybe consider remarriage.
“I was a widow, but I didn’t have to depend on my parents or someone else. I wanted to study and support my sons on my own,” begins Sifiya who decided to move back to Bengaluru in 2011, this time with her youngest son, to find a job.
“My friends had assured me that they would have my back in the city, but on reaching, I realised it wasn’t true. None of them came forward to help. We were miles away from home, and I was scared and helpless. My son who was just a year old at the time was burning up with fever, but I knew nothing of the city and had to spend almost two nights, sleeping at Majestic bus station,” she recalls.
But, she would not have been here as a beacon of inspiration, if not for a stranger.
“Sitting on the bench of the bus station and crying helplessly with my child on the lap was one of the lowest points in my life, and I might never have recovered if patti (grandmother in Tamil) had not come to my rescue,” she quips.
This old woman, whom she had just met at a bus station, took her to her house, gave her food and shelter and helped her out in every possible way for the next eight months.
“Patti said I reminded her of her daughter, who was also widowed young. She urged me to live with her. I got a job in a call centre, continued my Class 11 and 12 education from Kerala in correspondence, and all this while she looked after my son now and then. She would not even take a penny from me in all this time,” remarks Sifiya.

After managing this way for almost a year, Sifiya could no longer stay away from her elder son, who was a 3-year-old at the time. She returned home, but this time with patti’s blessings and a valuable lesson that stayed with her forever.
“Patti gave me a lot of things, but the most important one was a lesson—to never abandon those in need. Back home, that got me thinking about other widows who had neither the means nor the education to fight all odds,” she says.
By that time Sifiya had completed Class 12 and was pursuing a degree in BA Literature, while also working as a receptionist at a local hospital.
“I decided to help these women by giving them a part of my salary, and have been sponsoring the full expenses of 60 families since 2013,” informs Sifiya.
But by the end of that year, during a visit to a few of those widows, she made another sad realisation.“A few of those women had children living with mental disabilities. But they had to survive, so the mothers would lock their children at home and go to work. I decided that I needed to help, and with whatever little money I could muster, I began to give them food, clothes and a monthly pension ranging from Rs 1,000 to 2,000,” she says.
It was this conviction to truly help, that pushed Sifiya to start a Facebook crowdfunding page, Chithal in 2013. She shares stories of these widows seeking help of any kind whatsoever through social media while continuing to do her bit through the Chithal Charitable Trust, which she started in 2015.
Talking about Chithal and the work, she shares, “In Malayalam, Chithal means termites. To many it might seem funny or even something with a negative connotation but its truly not. A termite shows up when you least expect it, I’m trying to do the same, for these women and eat all their worries away.”
she was conferred with the prestigious Neerja Bhanot Award last month.

Today, Sifiya is one of India’s most prominentsocial workers. Thanks to her efforts through which she has empowered over 100 widows and more than 600 families.
With BA, B.Ed, Diploma in public administration, a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, and an ongoing MA in Literature degree, Sifiya is a strong example for not just these women, but all of us.

The life of any individual has many dimensions, however many people in middle age, particularly the government servants tend to develop monotony in their lives. During such occasions the other dimensions of our life, other than the routine office work brings in a breeze of freshness and happiness. This makes the individual recharged and increase his/her efficiency even in their office work.
Many of us occasionally or routinely perform such activities like - Taking the kids of the colony to picnic, Donating something to needy, Sharing quality time at orpahanage/old age homes, Teaching the poor children etc which gives us contentment. Through this blog series – “Zara Hat Ke”, we wish to share such small activities which can inspire our other Prasar Bharati Parivar members and help them derive the pleasure of sharing by undertaking some of such activities. These activities may look insignificant and persons may feel shy to share these on public platform but we earnestly feel that these have great motivational/inspirational value and hence please do send 4-5 lines about such activities undertaken by you or any other employee alongwith 1 photograph at pbparivar@gmail.com for possible publication at Prasar Bharati Parivar blog www.airddfamily blogspot.com

Here is a story about Nivrutti Boratte, MTS, AIR Pune. Every year he celebrates his B’day in a different passion. This year, he spent the day with 10 Aganwadi/Baalwadi shalas honouring their teachers and workers. Sharing sweets with the little children of these Govt. schools probably gave him great satisfaction, peace and happiness. The children on the other hand also enjoyed. For them it was something special other than their routine days. We too wish him many successful and meaningful years in his life. His contact No. is 9922188464.

Please do send 4-5 lines about such activities undertaken by you or any other employee alongwith 1 photograph at pbparivar@gmail.com for possible publication at Prasar Bharati Parivar blog www.airddfamily blogspot.com

I am Dr. Geetanjali Chopra, founder of the Delhi based NGO- Wishes and Blessings. Born and brought up in Delhi, I finished my schooling from Convent of Jesus and Mary, completed my Bachelors from Lady Shri Ram College, my Masters, M.Phil. and my Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. I have traveled the world, given talks and lectures in India and abroad, published a book and have worked at Center for Policy Research for about 5 years, and founded my NGO, Wishes and Blessings, in 2014.

When and how did you think about Wishes and Blessings NGO?
My family has always believed in the power of philanthropy, the power of using our privilege and access to resources to help those who need it- the lesser privileged, those who do not have access to things that fulfill basic needs and wants. So, the seeds of charity were planted at a very young age.I used to visit a school for the visually impaired with my grandfather to celebrate festivals and events with the children. I continued this tradition even after he passed away. Every visit I would ask the children what they wanted. In 2014, the children made an interesting request- they wanted to play Holi. This request shook me. I could not associate Holi, a very visual festival, full of colour, with children who do not have 20/20 vision.
But I was determined to bring happiness into their lives. With the help of my colleagues at Center for Policy Research I was able to raise funds, and in the month of March 2014, 100 visually impaired children celebrated Holi with water and colour. I had never liked this festival before, but that Holi changed my life.

My organization is built up be people who have given up lucrative careers to work in the social sector. Each one is as passionate as the next, and we all work together.
What makes us special is that we do not focus on one cause. We believe that happiness isn’t just a final effect, but is also a major cause. So, in order to spread happiness, we focus on 9 areas some of which are infrastructure, relief work, education and hygienic nutrition.

To work in these 9 areas we have more than 15 projects, some of which are:

Daily Meals Programme:
We feed over 350 people daily, and serve 3 nutritious hot meals. Currently under this project we are feeding 225 women and children in 5 different shelters homes. Till date we have served over 2.5 lakh meals in Delhi NCR.

Birthday Manao: Many of the children we sponsor do not even know when their birthday is, let alone what it means to celebrate a birthday, what it means to cut a cake. Every month we celebrate the birthdays of all the children that have a birthday in the same month. This acts as a huge boost to the self-esteem of our children.

Sponsor a Childhood: We invite donors to fund the education of underprivileged children. Education is the prime way to change the future of children, of society. The programme can be modified to suit both donors and beneficiaries.
