Closed TV transmitter set ups of the Doordarshan will now be turned to All India Radio set ups by the Prasar Bharati as part of its efforts to rationalise its set ups. This is a part of the public broadcaster’s plan of transferring the set up of Doordarshan kendras across the country which are not currently broadcasting and are closed.

On closure of the DD set ups, the additional staff who were earlier deployed at those centres would be transferred to the AIR stations for “effective broadcasting” as per the requirements of the posts. This was in response to a Parliament question if the government has plans transferring the set up of Doordarshan kendras across the country that are currently not broadcasting anything.

Currently, there are 635 TV transmitters, 612 analog and 23 digital, of varying capacities located in different parts of country. This also includes backward and rural areas of the country. Doordarshan’s free-to-air DTH Service “DD Free Dish” covers the entire country and presently carries 94 SD TV channels. Earlier, All India Radio and Doordarshan were the media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. They became constituents of Prasar Bharati on November 1997.

Subodh Mukhopadhyay was so impressed by Hemant's sonorous voice that he introduced him to All India Radio Calcutta. He faced the mike and sang his first song, 'Amaar gaanete ale nabarupi chirantani,' when he was barely 13 in 1933.

Hemanta’s music career was primarily mentored by the Bengali musician, Sailesh Duttagupta. In 1937, Hemanta cut his first gramophone disc under the Columbia label. The songs (non-film) on this disc were “Janite Jadi Go Tumi” and “Balo Go Balo More” whose lyrics were by Naresh Bhattacharya and music was composed by Sailesh Duttagupta.Hemant da recorded 12 songs for Colombia in one year. Meanwhile, he also recorded private Hindi songs written in 1940. His numbers, 'Bhala tha kitna apna bachpan' and 'Aaj sharabi aankhon mein', became immensely popular. With unprecedented success of these songs he started assisting Kamal Dasgupta. His popularity as a singer was soaring and he recorded his first Hindi song for film Meenakshi under the baton of Pankaj Mullick, followed by the Hindi film Irada.

Producer-director Hemen Gupta of Bhooli Nai was instrumental in bringing Hemant da to Bombay, having invited him to score music for Filmistan's Anand Math in 1951. The background music was much appreciated. Hemant da scored music for Daku ki Ladki, Samrat, and Filmistan's Ferry. Though hurt after films did not do well, he went ahead and accomplished this haunting melody, 'Na ye chaand hoga na taare rahenge magar hum hamesha tumhare rahenge', set in Raag Kaafi, with beautiful interludes of sitar, sarangi and tabla.

With four flops in a row, he decided to go back to Calcutta. And this is when S Mukehrjee of Filmistan advised him, "Don't go back with flops, stay here. Compose music like Naushad first and then think of going back to Calcutta. With these words he signed him for Filmistan's next venture Nagin. The rest is history, as he composed twelve great numbers. He used composer Kalyanji's clavioline to create a song with the effect of a snake charmer's been. The solos of Hemant da including 'O zindagi ke denewale' and 'Tere dwar khada ek jogi'; became instant hits nationwide even before the release of the film. Jaagriti, too, was produced by Filmistan and it created a storm with its music. Hemant da was in huge demand after the success of Nagin and Jaagriti.

He had also become a producer with the Bangla film, Neel Aakasher Neeche, followed by the production of a Hindi film, Bees Saaal Baad, under the banner Geetanjali Films. A suspense thriller based on Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Hound of Baskerville', the film had Lata's classic gems and Hemant da lent his voice to these unforgettable numbers 'Zara nazron se keh do ji' and 'Beqrar karke hamein yoon na jaayei'. So did Bin Badal Barsat fared well. His next home production was Kohraa based on Daphne du Maurier's grand novel 'Rebecca'. Kohraa's renditions were simply beautiful, 'Raah bani khud manzil', 'Ye nayan dare dare', and 'Jhoom Jhoom dhalti raat'. These wonderful numbers could not sustain Kohraa, causing great anguish to Hemant da.

Hemant da's all-time great number was 'Jaane wo kaise log they' that he sang for Guru Dutt's Pyaasa. Guru Dutt also signed him for his classic, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Hemant and Shakeel Badauni were back after Bees Saal Baad. Hemant da's music truly enhanced the spirit of the movie.

Here is the good news to lovers of this region’s unique dialect and listeners of All India Radio-Adilabad station as well! The programmes of the public broadcaster are going to be aired 24/7 online. The listerners now can enjoy the programmes at any time and from any part of the world. They can easily access to the live streaming audio services using the free All India Radio LIVE mobile application which is can be downloaded on Google’s Play Store.

“The 100.2 FM, the local radio station of AIR, catering to the erstwhile composite Adilabad district can now be heard in crystal clear quality not only in the remotest Adivasi hamlets of Adilabad but also from anywhere across the globe,” S Sumanaspathi Reddy, the programme head of the radio channel told Telangana Today. The local radio station was the only the second Telugu radio station available on the mobile application. “No single transmitter’s signals can reach the entire programming zone – nearly 300 kms wide — of this station. And this has been a painful constraint on the station’s operations for more than 33 years of its existence. With the help of the All India Radio Live app, we could overcome the limitation, once for all. People belong to this region living anywhere in the world can now feel connected with their homeland. And Telugus across the world can enjoy the unique inflexions and pleasures of the Adilabad dialect,” he underscored.

“For the Raj Gond, Kolam and Naikpod adivasis, as well as for other tribal communities of the four districts, who constitiute a big percentage of our audience, we have a lot of spoken word and musical programmes in their own languages,” he added. The distinct USP of the station is its full -fledged use of authentic Telangana dialect of the region in all its live programmes. The slang used by announcers and presenters is colloquial and can be found in conservations of locals. In fact, this radio station is the only public broadcaster in doing so at present and could generate its own bases audience through this way of presenting programmes over a period of time.

A lyricist of infinite variety and a composer of creative depth, a scholar of classical music and a human being of humility and piety, Sudhin Dasgupta achieved artistic glory not only with his film songs but also with his non-film renditions. His name is synonymous with sweet, undying music. His lyrics writing acumen is the gift of God. A gift that spoke of sweet pleasures and hurting sorrow.

Notable compositions of Sudhin Dasgupta include “Moyurkonthi rater nile” for Manobendra Mukherjee, “Ei Jhirjhirjhir batashe” for Dhanonjoy Bhattacharya, “Akash eto meghla” for Satinath Mukherjee, “keno tumi phire ele” for Shyamal Mitra, etc. The big challenge of Sudhin Dasgupta was to face Robin Chatterji, who was dominating the Bengali film music, and modern song with his versatile creations. Robin Chatterji had introduced Portugese folk song in the film Deeper naam tiya rong, “o amar sat rajari dhon” and “phiriti bosakor kure gi dise” sung by Shyamal Mitra and Bhaisnav angik bhajan “O mon kokhon shuru kokhon je shesh ke jane”in Uttamkumar’s film Kamallata, 1969. Besides he composed prayer song to kirtan to classical song in Lalubhulu, 1958, for Manobendra Mukherjee.

Sudhin Dasgupta changed the horizon of Bengali film song by asking Manna Dey to sing for Uttamkumar whose major songs were previously sung by Hemanta Mukherjee whose voice suited him the most. Sudhin Dasgupta went to Bombay where Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar were busy in the recording of songs of film Pakizaa with Gulam Mohammad and Naushad. When Sudhin Dasgupta recorded the song for Uttamkumar’s film Shonkhobela, 1966, titled “Dekechi ke age ke diyeche sara” as a duet song for Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar, Naushad said the words could not be understood as it was composed in Bengali, for the tune was excellent 3 The film Shonkhobela was a superhit film and Sudhin Dasgupta’s composition for Manna Dey “Ami agantuk” and for Lata Mangeshkar “Aj mon cheche ami hariye jabo” was well acclaimed by music lovers across the nation. Sudhin Dasgupta shaped the career of Legendary singer Manna Dey who was busy in Bombay singing different types of songs under the patronage of Shankar Jaikishan, Roshan, Salil Chowdhury and others. After Shonkobela, Manna Dey formed an immortal combination in playback singing with Uttamkumar, providing sensational performance in films like Antony firingi, 1967, Nishipadda,1970, Stri, 1971, Sanyasi Raja, 1975, and winning national awards and Bengal Film Journalist Association (BFJA) awards one after the other.

DRM at Association of Radio Operators for India’s AGM.

$

Association of Radio Operators for India (AROI) is the official association of the private commercial radio stations in India made up of 28 commercial radio stations. At present, these commercial radio stations are broadcasting in analogue FM and it is understood that they cover about 40% population of the country. The DRM Consortium has just joined AROI as a full member.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association was held in New Delhi last week under the chairmanship of Anuradha Prasad, President, AROI.

Considering that there is a definite need to introduce digital radio broadcasting in India to effectively utilise the spectrum in VHF-II band for Radio broadcasting, to provide diverse content and other value-added services to radio listeners, the regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended last year that the commercial radio sector should be allowed to provide digital radio broadcasting services within the existing frequency band of 88 –108 MHz used for FM radio broadcasting.

The recommendation was to use and auction the 200 KHz bandwidth spectrum between two allocated FM frequencies in the VHF-II band, without disturbing existing analogue FM transmissions. Amit Khare, Secretary Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, while addressing the AROI members emphasised how important it is for the commercial radio stations to start digital terrestrial radio broadcasting in India.

While speaking at the meeting, Yogendra Pal, Chair of the DRM India Chapter, outlined the advantages of the DRM system for digital broadcasting in the FM band. He said that six audio channels, each with value added text and multimedia services, can be broadcast in DRM digital while respecting the recommended 200 kHz bandwidth use, against only one audio channel in analogue FM. He further added that DRM FM is much more energy efficient than analogue FM and the area which is covered by a 10kW analogue FM transmitter can be covered by just 1kW digital power by DRM FM.

He added that the DRM system adopted by All India Radio (AIR) for digital broadcasting in Medium Wave (MW) and Short Wave (SW) bands, fully meets the TRAI recommendations for digital broadcasting in FM band as well. He added that the large digital receiver system already developed in India can easily be upgraded to receive digital DRM in FM band, too.

He mentioned that software Apps for DRM digital reception in mobile phones is ready and that, during discussions with mobile phone manufacturers, it was learnt that once the policy for digital broadcasting in FM band is announced by the Government they may consider extending digital output of the inbuilt FM tuner for DRM digital reception in mobile phones.

Some of the members raised the concern that since commercial radio stations are not permitted to cover news and sports, in digital they would have to go for more music channels. This would further increase the cost of music royalties. At the same time digitisation would require new investment in transmitter infrastructure, production costs and license fees for new frequencies etc. Some of the participants suggested that Government may give them incentives for going digital and each licensed commercial radio station may be allocated a frequency, totally free of charge, for digital broadcasting.

Considering that AIR has already installed 35 MW DRM digital transmitters, which will cover about 60% population of the country once they start operating in pure DRM digital mode, Pal suggested that to start with commercial stations might approach the Government/Prasar Bharati/AIR to be allowed to carry their programmes on one of the additional channels available on the digital MW network. This could be a win win opportunity for AIR and the commercial stations to popularise digital broadcasting in India without any of the additional expenditure necessary for creating a new transmitting infrastructure.

4) Gen Sagat Singh's bust inaugurated in Jaipur

'General J S Aurora, the commander of the Indian forces in the East, asked General Sagat Singh to withdraw his troops who were on the move to Dacca -- but he refused.'
'He said, "Jaggi, over my dead body".'
'Therefore, I say the creator of Bangladesh was General Sagat Singh.'Lieutenant General O P Kaushik salutes the incredible soldiers who turned the tide in the 1971 War.

Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, born in Churu district of Rajasthan on 14 July 1919, was one of the greatest Generals of the world. Known for his extra ordinary military mind, intelligence and chivalry, Lt. Gen. Sagat Singh’s contribution to India is celebrated all over the country during his birth centenary. A bust of Lt Gen Singh was inaugurated in Jaipur ( Rajasthan) and Nathu-La ( Sikkim) .

He started as a Naik in the elite Ganga Risala of the erstwhile Bikaner State, was promoted as Naib Subedar, got commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Ganga Risala and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General.

He was the man behind the success of Operation Vijay in 1961 which aimed at liberating Goa from the Portuguese.

The parachute brigade led by Lt Gen Sagat Singh played a prominent part in the liberation of Goa, and his men were the first to enter Panjim on December 19, 1961, ending 451 years of Portuguese rule.

The Nathu La clashes started on 11 September 1967, when the People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched an attack on Indian posts at Nathu La, and lasted till 15 September 1967. In October 1967, another military duel took place at Cho La and ended on the same day. Major General Sagat Singh, GOC 17 Mountain Division, refused to vacate Nathu La, which was a Border Out Post (BOP),

According to independent sources, the Indian forces achieved "decisive tactical advantage" and defeated the Chinese forces in these clashes. Many PLA fortifications at Nathu La were said to be destroyed, where the Indian troops drove back the attacking Chinese forces. General Sagat Singh forced Chinese troupes to retrieve. The Tri-Colour continues to flutter with pride today at Natu La because of the grit, determination and farsightedness of the officer and our Nation shall always remain grateful to General Sagat Singh. Indeed, he shall always be remembered as ‘The Iron Man of Nathu La’.

Later during the Indo-Pak war of 1971, his Corps made a famous advance to Dhaka during liberation of Bangladesh and also participated in Meghna Heli Bridge Operation, an important aerial operation during the war. In fact this operation stunned the world's armies. It emerged as Lt Gen Sagat Singh's crowning glory as he used Mi4 helicopters to fly over the Meghna river as his Corps relentlessly attacked and defeated the Pakistani forces, crossing river lines and terrain considered impassable. His innovative use of helicopters remains unparalleled. The Indian Army shall request the Goa government, the Eastern Command as well as Bangladesh government to celebrate his birth centenary.

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) minister Prakash Javadekar has said that Doordarshan’s free direct to home (DTH) platform DD Free Dish is carrying 94 standard definition (SD) channels. “Doordarshan’s free-to-air DTH Service DD Free Dish covers the entire country, including backward and rural areas. DD Free Dish Platform presently carries 94 SD TV channels,” he informed the Lok Sabha.

He further stated that Prasar Bharati has informed that there are 635 TV transmitters (612 analog and 23 Digital) of varying capacity located in various parts of the country, including backward and rural areas of the country. Javadekar was also asked whether the government has any plan regarding transferring the set up of Doordarshan Kendras across the country that are presently not broadcasting anything to the Akashvani Kendra located therein, in the event of their closure.

In response to that, he stated that the Prasar Bharati has informed that consequent upon the rationalisation of Doordarshan Analog Terrestrial Transmitters, a decision has been taken to hand over closed television transmitter/transposer setups to co-located to All India Radio setups. “Additional staff available on closure of some DD setups pursuant to rationalisation have been posted at the vacant positions in AIR Stations as per requirement for effective broadcasting,” he added.

Steve Martin from the BBC talking about radio in Africa from 2013.

Johannesburg, South Africa, is a place like no other to hold a radio conference, and I was privileged to be at Radiodays Africa recently on their tenth anniversary. Radio is an important part of life in Africa generally. Radio reaches people who cannot read or write; and plays the part of an educator in many parts of the continent. Here’s the excellent Steve Martin from the BBC talking about radio in Africa from 2013. It’s a good overview in how progessive African radio stations are, as well as how they think about radio in a different way to many of us.

But radio in Africa is also, partially, stations like 94.7 in Johannesburg (tagline: “You love Johannesburg - we love you”), who sound as polished as the big top 40 stations you’d hear elsewhere. However, it was Bérard Duprès from the Seychelles Broadcasting Company that got me thinking a little. He began by explaining where the Seychelles were - they’re here in case you didn’t know - and spoke about the stations that the SBC run. One of the things Bérard showed was the radio station’s app. Obviously you can listen to the radio station on it, but you can also send a voice message to the station in high quality audio. The station uses a product called Fabrik, made in South Africa, which acts as a kind of private WhatsApp for the station, who are then able to edit and broadcast the messages. It’s a simple and straightforward way to get more voices on the air.

They’re not alone. Radio X in the UK is using a rather less private WhatsApp - well, they’re using WhatApp itself - to get messages into the studio for Chris Moyles. And they seem to be having great fun with it, even if most of the callers want just to say the word willy and bum. For radio stations everywhere, though, services like this makes it really easy to remain real and relevant to your audience. For SBC, who run radio stations that broadcast to over a hundred different islands off the coast of East Africa, it’s a great way to hear directly from your audience. For Radio X, it’s a very good way to hear them swear at you. Getting proper, decent audience audio on the air has never been easier. If you don’t have this function in your radio app - what’s stopping you?
