Pandit Narendra Sharma was an illustrious poet and lyricist, writer and intellectual as well as a journalist who has penned unforgettable poems, literature, and lyrics in films. A Hindi Urdu scholar, he combined the tradition of Kabir and Meera with the lyricism of ghazals and Urdu poetry to provide Indian cinema with the Hindi language that was rich in the literature of Allahabad and Ganga. He was the man who evolved the face of All India Radio during its drowning stage by establishing popular Radio channel Vividh Bharati and generated listeners that went up to an amount of almost 35 crores.

Pandit Narendra Sharma had worked with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as his Hindi Secretary during the independence movement. It is said that Jawaharlal Nehru who was the Prime Minister, personally requested Pandit Narendra Sharma to chalk out a plan for setting up an entertainment radio channel within Aakashvani. After a lot of labour put in by the team led by him, the new entertainment channel named as ‘Vividh Bharati’ by Pandit Narendra Sharma himself, took shape and was inaugurated on October 3, 1957 at Bombay (Mumbai).

The first song which was broadcasted on the inaugural day of Vividh Bharati was ‘naach re mayuraa’ (1957)which was sung by Manna Dey. The song was penned by Pandit Narendra Sharma especially for the occasion and set to music by Anil Biswas. The poetry is symbolic of the successful culmination of a dream becoming a reality and it is compared in the song with the happiness of a dancing peacock during the arrival of the rainy season. The song became very popular on Vividh Bharati and later HMV included this song in their album on rainy season.

He wrote some memorable songs for hindi films like “Jyoti Kalash Chhalke” (Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan — 1961) ,“Yashomati maiya se bole nandlala” (Satyam Shivam Sundaram — 1979) and the title song “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” (Satyam Shivam Sundaram — 1979).

For years, songs like ‘Kabhie Kabhie mere dil mein’ and ‘Dil cheez kya hai,’ have inspired young and old romantics alike. The music composer who gave life and music to these expressive lyrics is the genius named Khayyam. Khayyam is known in the Hindi film industry to have been very ‘choosy’ and a ‘perfectionist.’ While making music for the film, ‘Shola Aur Shabnam,’ he brought to life the poetry of Kaifi Azmi by providing music that complimented the lyrics and did not overpower it. The song ‘Jaane kya dhoondti rehti hein ye aanken mujhmen’ sung by the great singer Mohammad Rafi became very famous but little did people know that Rafi had given 21 takes to perfect the song! The same thing applied to another great singer, Asha Bhosale. Asha had never sung in the ghazal genre and Khayyam made her sing for Muzzafar Ali’s iconic film, ‘Umrao Jaan.’ Apart from providing hit music for films, Khayyam has also provided music for ghazals, devotional songs, sufi songs and bhajans. The most notable amongst this is actress Meena Kumari’s poems ‘I write, I recite,’ for which Khayyam gave music which made the poems come to life of their own.

The Jewish connection to AIR tune

$

I felt really elated all of a sudden at hearing the familiar tune. Many would remember that two minutes tune in their lives, at some moment or the other. It was the AIR Signature that came out from the other room. Initially I thought it was the opening of Transmission III of Akasvani Guwahati in the evening. When I saw, it was the violin that played the AIR tune by classically trained violinist from BHU Mr Dwipendra Sarma, the music teacher of our daughter. He put on some soothing music from a fiddle that made us sound impressive. I convinced that day that musicians are not only hear in tune, they also see in tune.

Violin is one of the best instruments to play, though it’s equally tough. For enhancing its resonance, the primitive bow is placed in front of the mouth. It needs a lot of practice for learning key signatures, notes, rhythms and bowings. The term resonance from a violin is related to Physics. Albert Einstein was a dedicated violinist from an early age who believed that the most joy in his life has come from playing classical music on his violin as a brainstorming technique. Coincidently the Nobel Prize Concert features only for internationally-renowned violinist to honour the Nobel Laureates. Learning to play an instrument requires coordination between hands and with visual or auditory stimuli. Violin lessons aren’t a waste of time after all. Learning an instrument between the ages of six and eight makes children grow up smarter and enhance motor skills development producing long term changes to the brain. But things don’t necessarily make them better musicians yet many Israelis follows because it makes it possible into acquiring learning skills very early in life. Lord Yehudi Menuhin, is the greatest violinists of the 20th century.

Music knows no boundaries and is truly a universal language. Surprisingly, India’s most recognized tune wasn’t composed by an Indian. It is Hitler’s genocide that gave us our favourite AIR’s iconic tune. Walter Kaufmann was one of the many Jewish refugees in exile. The Jewish man was a forgotten genius, who left Prague in 1934 for lives. They found a new home in India during Nazi’s infamous Holocaust. Kaufmann arrived in Bombay as a Jewish refugee and started beginning of his music career in India. He lived for twelve years in Bombay and worked for All India Radio. While Pandit Ravi Shankar went to the West to conquer the musical journey, Mr Kaufmann’s western technique got encounter with Indian music and also influenced by Asian Music from China and Tibet while he was the director of music at AIR.

He was a composer, conductor and educator, who did PhD in musicology at German University in Prague and created music with heart and intellect. The Czech man Kaufmann had composed the AIR tune based on raga Shivaranjini in 1936. Mehli Mehta the father of the composer Zubin Mehta is also believed to be the violinist of the AIR tune. Violin, viola, cello, and tempura used to make that famous tune. Beside that famous jingle to AIR’s legacy, he involved with various radio dramas and operas. Surprisingly AIR has not given any official reorganization to Kaufmann for his iconic work.

Radio was the only monopoly in the field of mass communication in our days. In recent times it faced stiff challenges from TV, Internet and Print Media. Interestingly, AIR has earned crores of Rupees from selling of ad slots at a premium price before and after PM Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’. However, high quality digital stereo FM station could suffice its presence after launching Delhi’s Vividh Bharti on FM mode. Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India inaugurated the services of the Indian Broadcast Company (IBC) on July 23, 1927. But it originally started broadcasting by the Radio Club of Bombay in Jun 1923. The IBC later became All India Radio in June 8, 1936 that employed European musicologists John Fouldes and Walter Kaufmann for Delhi and Bombay respectively to oversee Western music. India finally adopted the name Akash Vani in 1958.

Kaufmann immortal work marked the beginning of a typical Indian day before the TV and the Internet took over. Even today his iconic tune makes each and every Indian nostalgic. Those were the days; the radio was a constant companion. Vividh Bharati Service proved its success connecting Indian soldiers posted on remote border areas. Radio is still having an impact on the communications gear despite the availability of digital platform.

Mr Kaufmann is an inventive and gifted musician as once recommended by Albert Einstein. In 1946, Walter left India for England as a Guest Conductor at the BBC. He was the Musical Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg, Canada during 1948-1957. Then he taught in the School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, US till 1977. While it’s been over three decades to Walter Kaufmann’s demise in 1984, he has been immortalised through his AIR Signature Tune that millions of Indians continue to wake up. AIR is now switching from analog to digital in a phased manner. The listeners can look forward to highly enhanced transmission quality like Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) in near future. And Mr Walter Kaulfman is always there to brighten our days.

Radio broadcast during a hunger strike by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869 – 1948), in 1947.He led a series of nonviolent campaigns as the leader of the Indian crusade for home rule. He frequently resorted to hunger strikes not only in protest of British colonialism but also against hostility between India’s Hindus and Muslims. When Great Britain granted independence in 1947, the partition of India along religious lines led Gandhi to declare his life a failure because India could not govern itself as one nation but instead gave in to the division.

How a Community Radio Station Changed the Lives of the People of Mewat

$

When the Government of Haryana issued an advisory 11 years ago that it would no longer work with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Archana Kapoor and her team of social workers – who had been working towards education and livelihoods in 100 Haryana villages at the time – were devastated. The Delhi-based publisher, filmmaker, author and activist had to figure out some other way to continue working with rural communities.
Just then, she came across an article that said the Government of India had opened up the community radio sector to NGOs. She applied for a license, and in September 2010, Radio Mewat was born.
Today, it is a National Award-winning community radio initiative that has brought to the fore unheard voices of the most vulnerable and marginalised sections of society, and has become a powerful tool for empowerment. It has been featured extensively in both national and international media for its innovative programming, and in journals brought out by UNICEF and UNESCO.
In a place like Mewat where only 10 per cent of households own a TV, the radio still has relevance – and anyone with just a feature phone can access Radio Mewat for free.

“If you ask people whether they listen to the radio, most of them say no. But if you ask them whether they listen to Radio Mewat, they will say yes,” smiles Archana, whose goal is to educate the community about their choices, whether it’s to do with consumer rights, financial inclusion, Panchayats, health, education or livelihoods.
Over nine years, the struggles have been many. “We were worried about acceptance by a community that was inward-looking and resisted outsiders and the media. What many of us take for granted – access to schools, quality education, potable water, well equipped hospitals – are all a struggle for this community,” explains Archana......

AIR Guwahati – 71 Years Of An Emotion

All Indian radio (AIR) has just completed 71 years of its existence in Guwahati on July 01. AIR more popularly known as the Akashvani is not just a radio station but it is also an emotion for the people of Assam. The Guwahati station of the national public radio broadcaster of India originated from the Shillong Guwahati Station which began its journey from the Commissioners Bungalow located in Uzanbazar Ghat. It started broadcasting from July 01, 1948.

Programmes such as ‘Goya Raijor Anusthan’ (Rural Programme), ‘Aideur Buloni’ (Women’s Programme) and ‘Akonir Mel’ (Children’s Programme), which are popular even today dates back to days of the inception of the station. The ‘Weekly Radio Drama’ and the fortnightly’ Musical Feature’ programmes were quite popular during the early days. The first musical feature programme was ‘Asomiya Maat’ by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
Mahendra Borthakur, Ananda Goswami and Nilu Chakravorty during a radio drama recording
It was on May, 1957 that the station had been relocated to its permanent campus at Chandmari. Although Akashvani dominated as the medium of mass communication for almost 40 years, it has faced tough challenges from Television. Now with the advent of the age of internet, it has still not been able to wipe out the emotion connected with the term ‘radio’. Akashvani is not just a radio station but an indicator of time. Each programme would tell what time of the day it is and people would according go on doing their work. From a wake up alarm to a good night’s lullaby, it served all purposes. Not only among our elders, radio, is also popular among today’s youth. It has been able to curve a place of its own in their hearts.

Amlan Jyoti Saikia, a 21 year old digital journalist says, “Until a few years ago, I used to be an active listener of Akashvani Guwahati. For me, until I listen to the radio my day never started nor did it end without it.” Further, speaking on how AIR shaped his town’s routine, he said, “’Tejore Kamalapati Paravate Ninda– the radio’s ‘Bandana’ program was the 6 am call for the listeners. At 7:30 am, ‘Jilikibo Luitore Paar’ had been aired for students and it was the time for children’s breakfast. When ‘Aanchalik Batori’ is aired at 9:00 am, the school goers would hurriedly finish off their food and take off for school; while mother finishes her kitchen chores listening to ‘Chitrageet’.”

“Radio is still the best medium for real-time discussions between people; it’s possible to hear the emotion in their voice (no need for smileys!)”, Amlan added.

Anil Biswas was perhaps the first composer, who understood deeply various complexities of background music and also introduced counter-melody in his music.

Recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Anil Biswas immensely contributed as a composer and as a lyricist in Indian film industry. Biswas is known for his film music in Gramophone Singer (1938), Roti (1942), Kismet (1943), Arzoo (1950), and many others. He is also credited with being the first to use a chorus and an Indian orchestra in film music. It was Biswas who gave break to singers like Mukesh and Talat Mahmood in Pehli Nazar (1945) and Arzoo (1949), respectively and also was the reason behind the popularity of many singers including Lata Mangeshkar. Biswas wrote music for some 100 films between 1935 and 1965, when he retired from the movie industry to take over as director of the national orchestra on All India Radio.
In the initial days of his career he worked as a singer, lyricist and composer, with the ‘Hindustan Recording Company’ and later in 1963 he became director of the National Orchestra at the All India Radio (AIR) and also enjoyed his position as Chief Producer in ‘Sugam Sangeet’ which was a Hindustani Classical Music show at AIR Delhi, till 1975. Not only this, but Biswas won the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1986.
He also worked with Doordarshan on popular shows like Hum Log , Baisakhi and Phir Wohi Talaash during the 80s. Biswas also worked very closely with the Films division in the 80s and 90s on a number of documentary projects.

Alfaz-e-Mewat
107.8 fm, Ghaghas, Haryana
Sometimes an alfaz (Urdu for word) is what is needed to make a presence felt in this clamorous universe, where voices of the haves are constantly drowning out those of the have-nots. The deprived lot of Mewat, a district in Haryana, has found such a voice of representation in Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 (Rural Voices of Mewat). The farming communities often turn to this virtual platform to seek suggestions on their daily, mundane chores — that for them often turn into herculean tusks — and share their life stories. Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 began its journey in 2012 with the help of S M Sehgal Foundation, an NGO based in Gurugram (Haryana) solely dedicated to rural development. The foundation’s community centre in Haryana’s Ghaghas village houses the radio station. In this isolated and lonesome area, the community radio provides “a window to the outside world” as well as a tool to engage with the disengaged. Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 broadcasts for 13 hours a day, seven days a week, to households in more than 225 villages.

The programmes are directed, scheduled and produced by a team of the community people trained in media communication by the foundation. The themes, and content of programmes are based on the needs identified in discussions with the local community. Most of the episodes involve active participation by local communities and focus on each segment. Alfaz-e-Mewat allows villagers to learn about and discuss best practices in water management and conservation, health and sanitation, education, agriculture, environmental awareness, and rural governance. It runs awareness campaigns and hosts talk shows to discuss social issues that affect citizens. Oral folklore, poetry, music, and storytelling constitute the entertainment basket, showcasing the cultural heritage, history, and aboriginals of the land.

The community radio’s broadcasters invite women to talk about disturbing social issues. The various educational programmes lined up for children include Galli Galli Sim Sim (the Indian adaptation of Sesame Street). Then there is Radio School to provide children academic assistance and share general knowledge with them. “It is an excellent programme, especially for dropouts or those who have never been to school, or those who cannot afford private tuitions,” says Pooja O Murada, director, communications at SM Sehgal Foundation & Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8. She is also co-author of the book, Community Radio in India. Daily interviews are a special draw, which invite experts from various walks of life to share their experiences and achievements. Viewers’ suggestions and needs are taken into account and shared with state administrative officials. So, in a way, the locals are listeners and speakers as well. Programme coordinators also make the effort of holding live-chats with officials from the police department, judiciary, krishi vigyan kendras, health, education department and the likes.

“The source of entertainment in the area is limited, and there is good demand for programmes on folklore and folk music. Farmers often call up to share feedback on crop-related programmes. Sanitation and health programmes have a good number of listeners. People connect with the radio station during live shows or evening music shows to request for a local song of their choice,” says Murada. “Alfaz-e-Mewat has documented several stories of change, shared by listeners who either have benefited from a particular government scheme, details of which are shared during a show, or have felt a sense of empowerment to bring change in their lives and in their surroundings,” she adds.

Parent body SM Sehgal Foundation has been extending financial support to the radio. Besides, Alfaz-e-Mewat has collaborations with DAVP, so it receives government ad campaigns. It can also apply for projects through government departments and ministries, like the 365-episode series called Sehat ka Paigam supported by the department of science and technology, under the latter’s project on women’s health and nutrition. The radio station also applies for projects through multilateral organisations like UNICEF, and through government’s CSR initiatives.

“Technology and affordable internet have no doubt connected people with the world, but for our broadcast area, these technical advancements are still not inclusive. Access to mobile phones is still limited for women. A large chunk of the population are not on smartphones and, above all, the information from the community radio is local, in the local dialect and about local people’s issues, something which cannot be fulfiled by the new media,” says Murada.

However, Alfaz-e-Mewat has learnt to utilise technology to its benefit. Audiences who are on WhatsApp are connected closely through radio updates and audiences share their feedback on live programmes. It has also designed audio capsules, spanning two-three minutes that can be easily shared with listeners using mobile phones. Alfaz-e-Mewat collaborates with other community radios for areas with signal problems. It practises narrowcasting of programmes to collect feedback and facilitate community dialogue. People of Nuh, who speak Mewati language, can listen to the radio station from anywhere in the world through live streaming. The radio station also updates their programmes on podcasts.
