I&B ministry may allow private FM channels to air their own news

The rider is they will have to carry AIR news first, for a fixed tariff ranging anywhere between Rs2lakh and Rs50lakh The Information & Broadcasting (I&B) ministry may allow private radio operators to air their own news content, provided they start airing news sourced from the All India Radio (AIR) at a fixed tariff for a certain period of time. Under the FM radio policy guidelines, private FM channels were not allowed to broadcast news as there was no manpower or mechanism to monitor the content of such news. However, last year, under the third phase of FM auction guidelines, the government had decided to allow private radio operators to carry “verbatim” AIR news content. The move may lure licensed radio operators to use news sourced from AIR, an idea that had failed to generate interest among them. This will also fetch the central government a good revenue, as it plans to expanding the radio broadcasting sector through private channels. The I&B ministry has recently invited applications for e-auction of second batch of 266 FM Radio channels in 92 cities under the FM Phase III expansion, under which special incentives are being offered to 36 channels in 14 cities comprising Jammu& Kashmir and north eastern states. Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati will sign an agreement to allow such FM channels use AIR’s news bulletin and has already prepared a tariff card for those interested in sourcing news bulletins from the AIR.

As per the tariff card, radio operators will have to pay the AIR anywhere between Rs2 lakh to Rs50 lakh per year, depending on the popularity of the channel and the city where the channel is operating. The tariff would be lower for smaller cities and will go up for tier I cities. Whether the channels decide to run the AIR news content for 15 minutes or for all day, the tariff would remain the same. It is awaiting the I&B ministry’s nod. A senior I&B ministry official said that most private radio operators are anyway not keen on airing news. “Private radio operators have barely shown interest in running news on their channels. They can get readymade news content for AIR and run them at their ease,” the official said. When dna contacted minister of state for ministry of Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, he said private FM channels should start airing news as per the phase III policy. "As yet we have not seen anyone air news on private FM," he said.

Shaktimaan, the most popular and loved superhero of the kids of the nineties, is going to make a comeback on the small screen!
Shaktimaan, the most popular and loved superhero of the kids of the nineties, is going to make a comeback on the small screen. Yeah! That’s right. TV actor-producer Mukesh Khanna, who played Shaktimaan, confirmed that the new season of the series will air soon. It will showcase how the character acquired the initial superpowers. If you are a ’90s kid, you will remember and still love the iconic Indian superhero series of Shaktimaan. Mukesh Khanna essayed the role of Shaktimaan and his alter ego, Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri on the series inspired by . Actor Mukesh also said that the new season of the show will reveal the childhood of the hero. The makers of the show will also give insights about Shaktimaan’s journey. Talking to Press Trust of India (PTI), Mukesh said, “The new season will begin from where the previous ended. But it will also show the childhood of Shaktimaan. How he becomes a superhero through intense training from his seven gurus, and the entire process.”

The actor further added. “I wanted to show the character’s flashback last time, but that would have taken the character of Shaktimaan off-screen for a couple of episodes, which the producers didn’t agree to. But this time we are going to do it. We have some kids in mind (for the role), and a solid idea how to go about the show.” It seems as if the actor has reduced a lot of weight to get in shape for the most popular character. Mukesh has nearly lost eight kg and has surprised fans with his look. We also hear that the entire cast of Shaktimaan, including Geeta Vishwas, Tamraj Kilvish and Dr Jaikal, will soon be joining the team. Apparently, Mukesh is in talks with the Doordarshan channel to air the new season of Shaktimaan. “I am in talks with DD, to air it every day from 6–6.30 pm. If I get that slot I will bring it there. Talks are on, so let’s see. I would also urge other mainstream channels like Colors, Sony, and others to air the show via satellite. It will have a bigger reach,” the 58-year-old actor said in an interview.

The actor somehow feels that this is the best time to come back on the small screen with a popular show like Shaktimaan, as the youngsters are becoming more materialistic today. ”Shaktimaan was successful because it was made with honesty. Today, the youth are interested in the materialistic world and are kind of lost. So, this is the perfect time to bring this show,” he added. We know for sure that fans of Shaktimaan are already excited for the return of their ’90s superhero! Aren’t you?

In a unique initiative, public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) will launch a first-of-its-kind service called Akashvani Maitree, which can be heard both in India and Bangladesh. Mainly in Bengali, the service will provide a platform for content creation and sharing of cultural heritage between the two countries. The service will be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on June 28 with renowned Indian and Bangladeshi artistes as part of the inaugural programme. Singer Usha Uthup is expected to sing the opening song while Soumitra Chatterjee will recite and Bangladeshi artistes Rezwana Chaudhary Bannya and Shama Rahman are likely to participate in the event.

While earlier programmes of this service were produced solely by AIR, the new 'Maitree Service' will invite Bangladeshi artistes and personalities for participation. "There would also be Bangladesh-oriented programmes so that there is greater awareness about our neighbour and India's views and concerns about it,'' Jawhar Sircar, Prasar Bharati CEO said. The channel comes following PM Narendra Modi's initiative to strengthen ties with Dhaka. The Special Bangla Service, was the precursor to Akashvani Maitree, and was launched in the wake of the Bangladesh Liberation Movement in 1971 and played a historic role during the movement. It continued to be very popular till April 2010, when it was discontinued due to decommissioning of the super power transmitter at Chinsurah in West Bengal.

An ode to Indian radio

Ameen Sayani, Melville De Mellow, and the voices that shaped us and united a nation

How did you lose your Malayalam accent, I asked my father, especially since it has smeared itself like coconut oil on every other relative from Kerala. Radio, replied my father. My paternal grandfather was a lawyer in Kottayam, the kind of man who made fallen dominoes out of hardened criminals. At 9pm sharp, he would order his vast clan of sons, daughters and nephews to collect at his feet. Together they would turn on the radio and listen to the familiar voice that said, “This is London calling.”

Listening to the BBC, said my father, taught him diction and delivery, skills he put to good use during his career as an English professor. He may have been a teacher, but his heart was in radio. Like legions of young men of his time, my father was inspired by Melville de Mellow, an iconic radio announcer who brought the nation to tears with his marathon 7-hour commentary during Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral. One 17-year-old was so inspired that he followed in De Mellow’s footsteps with his trademark line: “Mein Jasdev Singh bol raha hoon (This is Jasdev Singh speaking).”

Curious about De Mellow, I called P.V. Krishnamoorthy, the first director general of Doordarshan. Rangoon PVK, as he prefers to be known, is 95 years young and lives in Chennai. In the circuitous fashion familiar to Indian families, he happens to be my sister-in-law Priya’s grandfather. PVK worked under De Mellow and recounts tales of the radio icon’s dedication. “I made the mistake of telling DeMel that I heard packs of jackals baying behind Birla House on my way back home. Years later, for a documentary, he asked me to record the jackals. When I slyly offered voice recordings of British foxes, he said, ‘You lazy lout, PVK. I want the Indian jackal, not the British fox.’ So I went at midnight with my recorder and waited for these jackals to oblige me, which those buggers did, after a few hours.”

A meticulous man, DeMel, as he was known, practised speeches many times before the need to deliver them actually came. Like Nicetas of Smyrna, Demosthenes and Cicero, who used their skills of augury—by watching the flight of birds—to practise speeches for future events, De Mellow kept a close watch on history as it was unfolding. “His best running commentaries were at the funerals of Nehruji and Gandhiji. I have a feeling that he prepared well in advance after (Madanlal) Pahwa tried to place a bomb at Gandhiji’s prayer meeting,” PVK says.

The voice of my childhood, however, was Ameen Sayani and his Binaca Geetmala. Introduced to radio by his elder brother, Hamid, the younger sibling soon became hugely popular for his countdown of Hindi film songs. His opening greeting, both elegant and affectionate, epitomized the Indian ethos, whether delivered to his “Fauji bhaiyon (Army brothers)” or to his “Behno aur bhaiyon (Sisters and brothers)”. My husband recalls napping during hot Delhi summers, radio by the pillow, listening to the reassuring voice of Mr Sayani. Growing up in Chennai, I was not as clued in to Hindi film songs. Instead, I looked up to impossibly sophisticated college boys, who were obsessed with the Bournvita quiz contest, magisterially conducted by the voice of Hamid Sayani.

urs is a family that loves the radio. We may watch talking heads on TV at night, but we still wake up to the sound of the radio, whether it is 100.1, a radio station that plays classical songs in the morning, or other channels that help me practise my Kannada.Radio united India at one point, with everyone tuning in at the same time to listen, like they did when the TV serial Mahabharat aired. Can there be a more poetic name for this particular device than Akashvani (voice from the heavens)? This celestial name captured the mythology of an entire continent and forged it into the soul of an instrument, albeit one that is on the verge of becoming an antique.

The beauty of the radio is its simplicity. Like a book, it offers some choice in stations (as titles do with books). But once you pick a station or a book, you cannot control the content. Rather, you rely on curation by experts who seemingly know your taste in music better than you. Unlike mobile devices or YouTube, where you can choose every single song that is played, the radio is a relief. You turn it on and off it goes: plain old music peppered with commentary from professional radio jockeys. I would like to believe that the current RJs are not as good as those who came earlier, but that isn’t really true. They speak to the times we live in, and the best ones these days are often young women, sharp of wit, spry of comment and fetchingly laid-back and conversational in delivery—verily the opposite of the baritone that made Walter Cronkite the voice of America.

What makes a good radio announcer? Is it a good baritone or a catchy way of speaking? Cricket commentary is what most people associate with radio these days, and this has its own line of giants, including Anant Setalvad, Suresh Saraiya and Harsha Bhogle. My dad remembers smuggling a wire into the long-sleeved shirts they would wear during cricket matches and holding a pocket radio to the ear during classes. An entire class of boys, elbows on desk, head cushioned on palm, staring unwinkingly at the droning lecturer and sweating in their long shirts in hot and humid Kottayam—all so they could listen to cricket commentary.

As Mint’s founding editor, Raju Narisetti, told me in New York, today we have households where everyone watches the same show, be it Quantico or Modern Family, on multiple devices in their own space and time. As for the radio, it is relegated to traffic jams.Shoba Narayan contacted Ameen Sayani for this piece, but he wrote a nice email back, thus depriving her of the great pleasure of listening to the voice of a legend. Shoba tweets at @ShobaNarayan and posts on Instagram as shobanarayan. Write to her at thegoodlife@livemint.com

The Dhimsa FM radio station at Chhapar village in Koraput district focusses on rural development issues while offering a platform to the villagers to voice their concern. The radio station, established by local voluntary organization SOVA, was on Tuesday inaugurated by Unicef's India deputy representative (programme) in the presence of Koraput district collector Jaya Kumar V. "The idea behind setting up the station was to focus on rural development issues related to food sovereignty, organic farming, women's health, problems faced by children and to disseminate information related to various government schemes. It will also provide a platform to the rural residents to air their concerns and to promote local artists," said secretary of SOVA, Sanjit Patnaik. The station with one studio to record programmes and one 50-watt FM transmitter with coverage radius of 12 km on air broadcasts programmes on a range of social issues from 6 to 9 am, 10 am to 12 noon, 2pm to 5 pm and 6 to 9 pm in night.

"The station provides a wonderful platform to air problems like women's health issues, practice of child marriage and sanitation among others. Prior to the inauguration of the station, we have prepared over 700 programmes on various subjects," said Sachida Mohanty, a programmer at the radio station, who works full-time for Dhimsa Radio. "The programmes are prepared by the community in local dialects and provides a platform for local artists," he added. At least 12 reporters, appointed by the station, extensively travel in rural areas to interview villagers. A listener's club has been formed in each of the 62 village and they have been supplied a radio. "In places like Koraput we need more of such FM radio stations as the administration has very limited resources in reaching out to the people residing in remote and inaccessible areas of the district," said the collector.

8 Doordarshan TV shows that will make 90s kids nostalgic

$
0
0
In a time where the life span of TV shows are barely three-four months we are often reminded of shows that aired in the 90s. They not only ran for years but also have an lasting impression on our minds. Be it the stories, title track or characters they are still afresh in the minds of the viewers. Today, we have the luxury of switching to different channels but the joy of watching classic TV shows on Doordarshan was something else. We still have some sweet memories of those old Doordarshan days. Let us take you down to a nostalgic trip of 'good old days'. Dekh Bhai Dekh: Saas-bahu sagas and reality shows rule the idiot box these days. But there was a time when the entire family used to sit together and enjoy TV shows. Some of them went on to gain cult status and few made it to the list of the most memorable shows of all times. Dekh Bhai Dekh used to be one such show. The Indian audience was in love with three generations of the Diwan family and they could relate to each character in the show. Even after almost two decades, Dekh Bhai Dekh remains the most loved show of all times. ChandraKanta: It is an Indian fantasy TV series partly based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's novel. It was originally telecast on Doordarshan and was produced by Nirja Guleri. The fantasy show directed by Sunil Agnihotri was a hit due to its unique and interesting character sketch. Characters like Krur Singh, Chandrakanta, Badrinath, Tej Singh became household names. The show was later aired on Star Plus and Sony TV. It was lately remade for Sahara One.

Vikram Aur Betaal: Vikram Aur Betaal is based on Betaal Pachisi, written nearly 2,500 years ago by Mahakavi Somdev Bhatt. These are spellbinding stories told to the wise King Vikramaditya by the ghost Betaal. Betaal, narrates a story to the king, concluding that Vikramaditya must answer a moral question pertaining to the story's characters and upon his answering the question, Betaal returns to his tree saying ‘Tu Bola… Main Chala.’Shaktimaan: Those who have grown-up watching the first Indian superhero of TV, Shaktimaan, fighting the evil forces in 90s, will clearly remember all its characters. The character received immense popularity and Mukesh Khanna, who played the character is still remembered for the role. The show was watched by parents and kids with equal interest. In the short 'education series' towards the end of the episode Shaktimaan would impart moral values in kids and also pull up their parents for doing the wrong thing. Shrimanji Shrimatiji: While today 'Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain' is tickling audiences funny bone, but there was a time when sitcom Shriman Shrimati, ruled viewers hearts. It featured actors like Reema Lagoo and Archana Puran Singh, Rakesh Bedi and Jatin Kankania in lead roles.
