Shamshad Begum : often hailed as India's original nightingale.

Shamshad Begum, right, being presented with the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor, by then president Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on March 31, 2009.
‘Mere piya gaye rangoon’, ‘Leke pehla pehla pyar’, ‘Kabhi aar khabhi paar’ — these retro Hindi numbers are part of every popular DJ’s play list these days. While the remixed tunes are a rage at the clubs, few youngsters would be able to name the person behind the groovy voice they love so much: Musical legend Shamshad Begum. It was Nayyar who brought her out of retirement in 1968 to sing a duet with Asha Bhosle in Kismat. The collaboration resulted in ‘Kajra Mohabbatwala’, which is as popular today as it was 40 years ago, and give a run for its money to ‘Kajrarey, kajrarey’!

“ Teri Mehfil Mein Qismat “ , her deduet with Indian’s most famous playback singer Lata Mamgeshkar in the 1960 blockbuster “ Mughal-E-Azam “, is still often played on All India Radio . Shamshad Begum (born April 14, 1919) started singing folk songs during religious functions and family weddings at age 10 and made her debut on Peshawar Radio in Lahore on December 16, 1947. She then sang for All India (AIR) as part of her music group, The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company Of Performing Arts , set in Delhi . All India Radio station at Peshawar was setup in 1935. Shamshad Begum got an offer to sing for the station. Shamshad begum worked for three years in AIR, Peshawar. Before this assignment she was offered to sing for AIR, Delhi , but was not able to take up the assignment , she fell ill that time. Shamshad changed her residence to Peshawar during her tenure in AIR, Peshawar. Her eldest brother Fazaldeen stayed with her in Peshawar. Hundreds of songs – gazals, devotionals, patriotic, she sang all genres of songs. Direct broadcast, these songs were not recorded. AIR, Lahore was set up in December, 1937 Shamshad Begum returned back to Lahore and worked for AIR, and became popular as a radio singer and announcer. Her voice was first heard on All India Radio Lahore in December 1937. Her songs were frequently broadcast on AIR Lahore , bringing her voice to the notice of music directors.

Her voice captivated an entire generation of Bollywood music lovers, and she worked for decades with the top music directors of Bollywood, including Naushad Ali, Anil Biswas and C. Ramchandra, who seemed to involve her in nearly every project they did. A “playback singer,” she was the woman behind the high, melodic voice to which scores of actresses lip-synced and danced from the 1930s till the 1970s. While she may be best known for singing the first “Western-sounding” song in Hindi cinema, “Meri jaan meri jaan … Sunday ke Sunday,” fans had their own favorites, songs that could resonate in lonely hearts and joyous souls alike.
The music director Ghulam Haider, who also discovered playback singers like Noorjehan, Mohammad Rafi, Surinder Kaur and Lata Mangeshkar, was credited with discovering Shamshad Begum as well. The song “Sawan ke Nazaarein Hain” was from one of the biggest hits of 1941, “Kazanchi.” As a versatile singer, Begum enthralled millions with her songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi. She sang for almost all the top composers of her time including Ghulam Haider, Naushad and O P Nayyar.
But by the late 1950s Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bhonsle were ascending and there was little demand for Begum, although some of her fave composers had her sing a number occasionally. Her last song was for the film “Main papi tum bakhshanhaar” in 1976.Such was the charm of the bright, self-taught vocals (of Shamshad) that producers insisted on using them to ensure the success of their movies. All the music directors of the 1940-60 period have recorded her in solos, duets and choruses in serious, comic, romantic, children’s, patriotic and devotional songs.
After her unceremonious retirement from the music industry in the 1960s, she disappeared from the public eye. Although the thriving audio cassette culture of 1970-80s and All India Radio kept her voice alive, for years nobody knew if she was physically alive. In 1998, the Indian newspapers announced her death only to be clarified later that the Shamshad Begum who had died in 1998 was Saira Banu's grandmother. For the post-1947 generation, she is a distinct voice, identifiable with the portrait of a middle-aged, plump lady on the dust covers of her long-play records and cassettes, a singer who entered the fray in the time of their parents' childhood and excelled in the rendition of mischievous, flirty and juicy songs in her jarring voice. Begum received the Padma Bhushan , one of India’s highest civilian awards ,in 2009.

The number of cars with line-fit DRM Digital Radio enabled radio sets on the Indian roads is quickly nearing a million (or 10 Lakh). All India Radio, the public broadcaster, has engaged in the past few
years in the largest radio digitisation roll-out in the world. With 39 powerful DRM transmitters installed and operational today, AIR is already covering a large part of the subcontinent and an estimated 600 million people with digital DRM radio services.
Digital radio is driven by listening in cars and is paramount for the success of India’s digital roll-out programme. The receiver industry is already on board and has invested millions of dollars in the development of DRM digital radio capable receivers and the roll-out of DRM equipped cars is growing quickly by the month. In 2017, this number was estimated to be about 500,000 (5 Lakh) cars, while as of the beginning of May 2018 the volume has already passed 800,000 (8 Lakh).
Listeners benefit particularly from India’s car industry’s joint effort to provide the in-car DRM functionality as a line-fit option for new models without any extra cost for the consumers.  The increase has been spectacular in comparison with similar rollouts in several other established markets in the world.

Tiruchi AIR steps into 80th year

All India Radio, Tiruchi, stepped into the 80th year of its transmission on Wednesday with a special two-hour programme that tried to encapsulate the best of its features as a public service broadcaster. “AIR Tiruchi is a rare treasure that has made people aware of the value of independence and democracy,” said District Collector K. Rajamani inaugurating the pearl jubilee celebration. The function also featured live performances by folk dance troupes, Carnatic vocal and instrumental artistes, and speeches by leading orators.
The station, one of six pioneering stations in pre-Independent India, and the second in the erstwhile Madras State after Chennai, was established on May 16, 1939 with a 5 KW medium wave transmitter from a rented premises in Tiruchi’s Williams Road. The inaugural message was rendered by C. Rajagopalachari, the then Chief Minister of Madras State and Lionel Fielden, the first Controller of Broadcasting.
The station today functions from its own building on the Bharathidasan Salai, and caters to 10 districts – Tiruchi, Peramabalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Salem, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukottai. From the original 100KW high power transmitter that was installed in Inamkullathoor in 1988, AIR Tiruchi has been shifting to digital ‘tubeless’ transmission from 2015. “Digital transmission has allowed us to save power, and also ensure a break-free broadcast,” M. Vasuki, Deputy Director General, AIR Tiruchi, said at a press briefing yesterday. “Besides creating a clear recording quality, we are also able to maintain the equipment in a smaller space, and with greater ease,” she added. The audio archives of the station are also in the process of being digitalised, said Ms. Vasuki.
AIR Tiruchi has three channels – the youth-oriented FM Rainbow, news and information-heavy Primary, and the 24-hour Carnatic music Ragam DTH (produced in collaboration with AIR Bangalore) – to cover topics ranging from agriculture and education to women’s issues, culture and literary appreciation. Considering the role of the station in covering agriculture, a key occupation in the Cauvery delta districts, AIR Tiruchi has adapted its programming to suit the times. “To address the crisis in the agricultural sector, we make sure that we include elements in our daily programming that will be of use to farmers. Concepts such as organic farming, crop insurance, soil health cards, and drip irrigation are examined in detail. We want to encourage young people to take up agriculture, and also to make the sector profitable,” said K. Natarajan, Head of Programmes.
The station’s 80th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year with special broadcasts from the district capitals, with a finale on May 16, 2019 back in AIR, Tiruchi, added Mr. Natarajan.

Tuning into the inner voice - Redu - The film has a central character - Radio.

This Friday seems to be an interesting one for the Marathi industry with a variety of films hitting the screens. Having been screened at various film festivals and also winning accolades at the Maharashtra State Film Awards, Redu also released this week. With high expectations riding on this one, Redu makes sure to keep the viewers hooked throughout.

The film’s premise is slightly similar to the recently released Cycle. Both the films have a central character that is attached to a particular belonging and becomes restless when that thing is not around. However, that’s where the similarity ends. Redu isset in the 1970s when owning a radio was a luxury. At such a time, Tatu (Shende) is gifted a radio by his brother-in-law (Babhal), much to the envy of his fellow villagers. Tatu carries his prized possession everywhere and doesn’t let anyone else, barring his wife (Kadam) and daughter (Supal) near it. From an irate daily-wager, Tatu suddenly becomes the toast of the village, but one day all of it vanishes when the radio is stolen.
Shri. Sagar Vanjari, the director of Redu told that radio was the centre of his mother's universe. "My mother lived a very simple life and radio was much more than just a source of entertainment for her. She would weak up in the morning, turn on the radio and listen to old songs while doing her daily chores and if someday, the chai had less sugar or if the roti was burnt, it was indication that the radio was out of battery or wasn't functioning right."

From capturing the essence of an era and the scenic beauty of Konkan, to executing a beautiful story on screen, the makers of Redu have done a very good job. Sanjay Navgire’s story is simple and Sagar Vanjari does justice to it with his direction. But it is Shende’s Tatu that keeps you hooked. Shende is a versatile actor who has the ability to convey a lot through his expressions and he does exactly that here. The way he switches from irritated to happy in a second is simply brilliant. Chhaya Kadam, fresh from the success of Nude, is another powerful character in the film. As Tatu’s wife, she encapsulates the feelings of a companion and is the pillar of support of the family.

Redu warms up with a light-hearted approach and gradually develops into a emotionally rewarding experience. Though the film is in Malvani, the language doesn’t act as a barrier. This one is definitely worth a watch.
