Che Guevara with KP Bhanumathy

Che Guevera was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution. During his visit in Delhi, in July 1959, Guevara was interviewed by journalist KP Bhanumathy for All India Radio. During the famous interview, Bhanumathy bluntly said to Guevara, “You are said to be a communist but communist dogmas won’t be accepted by a multi-religious society.” In reply, Che avoided calling himself a communist and asserted instead that he was a socialist who believed in equality and freedom from exploitation. He also mentioned that Gandhi’s teachings were noteworthy as they had finally brought freedom to India.

Shri. C R Harikmar PEX DDK Thiruvananthapuram retired on 31.3.2018

He had almost made it but fate had different plans. At the final stages, the national film award for best lyrics went the other way around when the jury, reportedly, misinterpreted a couple of words in the song ‘Ambalamillaathe..’.  As the proverbial slip, between the cup and the lips, fame and fortune slipped away.  The lyricist C R Harikumar, known as Kudappanakunnu  Hari in film circles, might have shrugged it off when the news came to him. He watched such things indifferently. By that time he had seen many ups and downs in life after a hectic political life as a student leader in the turbulent 70-80s.
C R Harikumar later joined Doordarshan and, after a long tenure, now retires as Programme Executive from DDK Thiruvananthapuram. In the mean time, he pursued his passion for writing lyrics, penned many songs for productions in and out of DD.  “I am not a professional in song writing”, Harikumar says,”nor can I pen lyrics instantly”. However, legends like K J Yesudas, P Jayachandran, celebrities like Venugopal, and Chithra used to sing his songs. Famous composers such as Dakshinamuthi, M B Sreenivasan, Raveendran,  Perumbavoor G Raveendranath and M Jayachandran joined C R Harikumar in making songs that mallus worldwide still cherish. In 1997 Harikumar directed a feature film, ‘Ilamura Thampuran’ starring Manoj K Jayan, Thilakan, Vani Vishwanath etc. Though the film fared well in theatres, it left some bitter memories to the director.
Immensely talented Kudappanakkunnu Hari’s works had appeared on DD National on three occasions even before his joining DD.  He had even scripted the first ever Onam programme produced by DDK TVM for the national network. While in DD he wrote screen plays, produced tele-films, folk programmes, documentaries etc. He has been a news producer for the last 10 years.

After retirement, Harikumar plans to focus on directing films rather than being confined to scripting screenplays or penning lyrics. He cannot be a typical filmmaker.  “I want my films be relevant socially, and on current issues as well. I am not a part of cliques or coteries in cinema field”, he says, “nor can you find me in any such gossipy get-togethers...”
Harikumar is a poet and lyricist and he was considered for National Awards in 1988. A youtube link of that song is also given :-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEfaAGD6s30
Let us wish C R Harikumar a happy retired life in which he can let loose all his creative potentials.
Prasar Bharati Parivar wishes him a very happy, healthy, peaceful and contended retired life.

Rarely played Indian instruments

$

Indian music is known for its legendary stories and quirky trivia. Indian music is as diverse as the culture, and so are the instruments. Many of these instruments have been modified and further adapted to relevant types. Though there is a museum of rare instruments seldom played in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, for those who can’t visit that right now, let’s have a look at ten such unique rarely played and therefore rarely heard instruments.
Kinnari: An ancient stringed musical instrument of India, finds mention in ancient Sanskrit literature, paintings and sculptures. The etymology of the name derives from a musician in Hindu mythology, Kinnara. The neck of the instrument is shaped like a kite and has three gourds, which act as the resonator. The main body has a wooden bar, which serves as a fingerboard.
Dilruba: Dilruba is a cross between two other stringed instruments, Sitar and Sarangi. 300 years ago this instrument was created and developed by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guru Ji modified Taus, an instrument played much before Dilruba. Taus was much heavier than its successor and was created by the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind ji. Dilruba was created, so it was easier for the Khalsa, the Sikh army to carry on the horseback, so they don’t miss out o music, while they travelled extensively by 1980s, this instrument almost faded into time, however with resurgence of Gurmat Sangeet in Punjab, one can hear it again at holy shrines.
Esraj: Esraj is the modern variant of Dilruba. The interesting part is, despite the instrument having found its traces in Northen India, specifically Punjab, today it is played, however rarely, in the east for Rabindra Sangeet. However, research says, that this instrument has variants across the North, Centre and East. This instrument though played at some level, has minimal recognition among the commoners. Both Dilruba and Esraj are played by keeping the instrument between the knees and with a help of a Gaz (Bow).
Ravanahatha: A bowstring instrument finds its origin during the rule of Ravana and was played by the Hela community. The legend goes; that Hanuman brought this to North India after Ravan was defeated in Lanka. Made of coconut shell and covered with goat skin, this instrument is played with a Dandi or a bow. Not a part of mainstream anymore, this instrument is restricted to folk music played in Rajasthan.

SurSringar: Similar to European instrument Lute, Sur Sringar literally means “Decoration of the notes”. Now often played Sarod has some similarities to SurSringar too, however the latter generates a more deep sound and resonation than Sarod. It could be made of wood or leather.
Vichitra Veena: It is the modern variant of the erstwhile Ektari Veena. The instrument has no frets unlike Sitar and is played with a slide. Initially, it was played with Dhrupad style of singing, giving it a marginal scope to have its own identity. It was brought forefront by Lalmani Mishra and his son Gopal Mishra. However, there are very few players, who have mastered this instrument.
Yazh: Another instrument, that has a rich history, is not known to the current generation. The instrument is said to be scripted in the head of Yali, leogrphy, commonly found in South Indian Temples. It can also be referred as parent of modern-day Veena. The structure and make of it varies.

Gubguba: Gubguba is a rare percussion string instrument. The instrument gives you an impression of Tabla, but a closer look makes you realize it is not. The instrument has a gut string too. The instruments have different names and variants across the country.
Pepa: A wind instrument, similar to Flute, Pepa was a household item once in the North Eastern state, Assam. However, due to decline in buffaloes in the state, the instrument is rarely made these days, as buffalo horn is an integral part of making this instrument.

Sambal: The percussion instrument, has two drum sets like table, but has a very loud and aggressive sound. Mostly played in the western belt of India, this instrument was mainly used for the folk music. However, even in that, the rate of its usage has declined.

The Radio Show Which Has Been A Friend To Many Women

$
0
0

After lunch, between 3 pm and 4 pm every weekday, a humble radio programme goes on air on the radio channel, Vividh Bharti. The announcers sound like friends engaged in a fun conversation — the language is kept simple and the songs range from old melodies to new Hindi tunes. All interspersed with candid, informative discussions. Sakhi Saheli, a synonym for girlfriend, is a popular show on All India Radio’s Vividh Bharti, running for nearly 15 years now.
For a one-way medium, the show still manages a remarkable two-way conversation with listeners, from school students to senior citizens. They pen letters and postcards, sharing thoughts, short stories, poems and couplets; some write about the problems they encounter and overcome in their lives, including gender discrimination in their families. The radio hosts read these letters and start discussions on everything from good parenting to cultivating hobbies. On Fridays, letters are put aside and phone-ins to the show are broadcast.
Sakhi Saheli has a wide audience: rural, suburban and cosmopolitan listeners, including many on-duty jawans. Balam Takli, Gola Bazaar, Katghora, Sohjani, Ural, Hardoi, Nayapara, Sambalgarh, Mungeli, New Majri Colliery are some examples of places — not quite nestled in the urban consciousness — from where letters make their way to the show.
For a one-way medium, Sakhi Saheli still manages a remarkable two-way conversation with listeners, from school students to senior citizens. It also enjoys a wide, diverse audience.
Once a week, a fraction of the hour is dedicated to learning about someone like Sarla Thakral — the first Indian woman to get a pilot’s licence in 1936 or Dr Asima Chatterjee, the organic chemist who contributed to the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs. On other days, there is a story corner, a new recipe or tips about fashion and beauty, careers options, tourism or healthy cooking.
“This maybe a small thing for us but imagine a woman in Ropar or Muzaffarnagar. This is a whole new world for them,” says former RJ and Delhi-based author Archna Pant, who often catches the show while driving.
The shows aired on Sakhi Saheli cause small but incremental impact, says Jyoti Bhadoria, a socially engaged homemaker and an avid listener of the show from Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. “It’s different in towns and cities where there are many mediums. In rural areas, there is a dearth of information. Here, women get a lot of encouragement from Sakhi Saheli.”

Poet, and former AIR Mumbai station director, Rajesh Reddy, first conceived the idea of a programme centering around women in 2003. “I tried to ensure as much scope for interaction with audiences as possible. Beyond infotainment, the audience should be able to engage with the show at a personal level. I think we managed to achieve that and build on it,” he says.
About encouraging the art of letter writing — even today, the show receives sacks full of mail, Mamta Singh says, “There is still so much value attached with letters and people send them with such affection that we don’t want to end this.” she adds. Singh hosted the show’s maiden broadcast in 2003 and continues to be one of the two prominent voices of the show.

The show has an enduring fan base of men, too, who learn from the personal conversations. “The women and girls write so thoughtfully on issues, that you can’t help but feel attached,” says Secunderabad resident Sagar Nahar, a regular listener. “Women’s issues may not directly concern men, but it feels like you are learning a lot,” he adds.
However, politics and divisive issues like religion are off limits on VB by rule, Singh says, though, for social issues, it all comes down to the art of storytelling. “If we frame an issue in a way that uses simple language and is appealing, audiences will certainly take note of it,” says Singh, “Using stories and anecdotes to drive home an important point will work.”

Talking about the audience demography, Singh says that the show attracts a pan-India audience. “Our audience also comprises the modern woman — students and working women, including IAS, doctors and engineers. We don’t always indulge in serious talk, we make sure there’s a contemporary relevance to things — whether it’s music or light-hearted banter,” says Singh.
So if you tune in on a weekday afternoon to Sakhi Saheli, chances are that you will learn something about the Indian woman. About how she isn’t a monolith living a homogenous life, and how, despite all odds, she is ever transforming depending on her circumstance. With a little help from her friends, of course.
