Inspiration:How 4 Girls Are Working to Make the World Wonderful for 50 Underprivileged Kids in Hyderabad!

$

To say you desire a world where everybody lives in harmony, unity and cooperation may seem like a utopian idea. But 19-year-old Meghana Dabbara is already laying the foundation for this utopian world in Medchal on the periphery of Hyderabad. The dwellers of this world are 50 children from underprivileged sections who are imbibing values of empathy, understanding and positivity in addition to education, nutrition and all-around psycho-social development at home in Medchal.Believing a harmonious world can be achieved through a positive environment and not corporal punishment,Meghana Dabbara and her friends and fellow core team members, Khyathi Chodagiri from Hyderabad, Saumya Katuri (18) from California, and Pranita Garimella (20) from New York started Make The World Wonderful, an NGO with a vision of a world where people live in harmony, starting with children first.

Today, they are using unconventional methods to ‘Make The World Wonderful’ in numerous ways. The inspiration behind the NGO ‘Make The World Wonderful’ dates back to when Meghana was ten years old and would listen to bedtime stories of her mother’s harmonious village, where people helped each other and co-existed in harmony.By the age of 13, an older Meghana was taken aback at the stark contradiction that existed between her mother’s stories and the harsh realities of the world outside. It was then that she decided to get onto the mission of creating a world where harmony was the underlying value.

It was only in 2015 that iB Hubs connected Khyathi, Saumya and Pranita, three young and passionate girls with similar visions. Together the four young girls are working towards their vision of harmony.“My mother is my inspiration. And I am ever grateful to the iB Group, who encouraged me to realise my vision and make it a reality,” Meghana told The Better India.Following the NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) curriculum, children are encouraged to look at the world in a new light with a number of activities and programmes. The young team has designed and researched various activities focussing on the core essence of values, integrating them into the children’s regular curriculum.

For instance, one of the activities encourages them to answer the question, “Have you filled your bucket today?” It is a program where each child has his or her own invisible ‘bucket,’ which symbolises their mental and emotional self. So, a full bucket means you feel more confident, secure, calm, patient, and friendly, while an empty bucket may make you sad, insecure, angry, stressed, afraid, or physically ill.Another activity encourages them to make a list of ten blessings they are grateful for and why, while appreciating that blessing as much as they can.Another modern-day ritual is that of holding the stone of gratitude (‘Magic Stone’) in their hand and reminding themselves about the best thing that happened that day and feel thankful for it before they sleep every night. These are kids who have lived and seen the world with its harsh realities before getting adopted under MTWW’s Child Adoption Programme (CAP).

Be it, Pooja and Rajeshwari who were left orphaned after their father was stabbed to death and mother passed away of mental shock, or the story of Aarthi and Abhishek who were asked to discontinue studies by a drunk father after their mother died in an accident, as their older elder sister was struggling to buy a one time meal.

Today, each of them has a transformation story to tell.

The children also engage in writing and reading aloud positive affirmations about themselves every day. Five times before going to bed and another five moments after waking up, it’s like music to the ears to hear a child saying, ‘I am a happy and loving kid. I respect everyone and everything. I love to learn!’They also have weekly sessions, where they gather and share their success stories with their friends. In order to build a stronger family bond between the children, another program pairs older kids with a younger one. The idea is to encourage them to look after each other. While the older kid ensures the younger one eats meals on time, attends classes, and completes their duty, it helps the younger kid imbibe values from his/her older partner and become independent.

These kids who once entered with immense emotional baggage are now not only able to take care of themselves but also are able to help other kids today. Every child also has a mentor, who guides them in all aspects of life.

Technology Updates

The next 20 years are likely to see more technological innovation than the world has seen in the past 300 years, and Louisa Heinrich’s ‘Inventing the Future’ panel looked to predict and analyse some of the possibilities.Hiroyuki Kawakita (a research scientist at NHK, Japan) showcased the broadcaster’s experimental work using stereoscopic TV as an overlay to mobile phone image capture. Another project was very high-resolution 360° (with footage captured in Patagonia) using a 4K image for each ‘eye’.Nils Lenke (Nuance Communications) explained how ‘intelligent assistants’, already present in vehicle audio and some home automation systems, would grow exponentially. He talked about Amazon’s Alexa, and how it and similar concepts would expand and become even more versatile and how the internet giants would – no doubt – try to dominate. “It will be usual that these AIs will talk to each other. But would you let yours talk to your bank?”

Sasha Schriber, from Disney Research in Zurich, supplied a compelling demo of how Disney prepares for current and future projects, not least in tough to render problems like snow (real, and collected from Davos for digitisation), human skin and eyes, and with clever applications such as their Cardinal ‘script to screen’ time-saving software.George Wright (head of internet research, BBC R&D) explained that huge progress was being made. Notably, projects such as VR had moved out of the lab and was now in the hands of the commissioners and for delivery. “But some of our experiments fail. It isn’t always easy to hit the sweet spot.” Wright said he had no doubt that machine learning and AI would remain of huge interest to the BBC.

Inspiration-College dropout to business tycoon — tracing Gautam Adani’s thorn-filled journey.

$

This isn’t just your ordinary ‘rags to riches‘ story. This is the extraordinary tale of a man who refused to cower down to fate and chose to make a solid mark in the business world instead. Gautam Adani, Founder and Chairman of the Adani Group, is one of India’s foremost business tycoons

Unlike many businessmen, Adani didn’t inherit his power and position. Hailing from a typical Gujarati-Jain family, Adani had a natural propensity for ‘dhanda’ flowing through his veins. His parents, Shantaben and Shantilal Adani, had migrated to the city of Ahmedabad from a small town called Tharad in Norther Gujarat in hopes of securing greater opportunities for their eight children. Supporting eight children was difficult, and understandably, money was a luxury for the Adanis.

He completed his schooling from Seth CN Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad and then enrolled himself for as Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce at Gujarat University. It was when he was pondering over accounts and statistics, he realised academics was not for him. Instead, he felt that he could be using his time to do bigger and better things. While still in his second year, Adani shocked many by dropping out of college. With only a hundred rupees in his pocket, he took off to the City of Dreams – Mumbai.

His had his first encounter with Lady Luck when he procured a job as a diamond sorter at the Mumbai branch of the Mahindra Brothers. Soaking in the A to Z of the trade, while also simultaneously making mental notes on the changing markets, he set up his own diamond brokerage at Zaveri Bazaar, the unrivalled jewellery market of the city. This was his first big break.

A year later, his older brother, Mahasukh Adani, bought a plastic unit in Ahmedabad and requested him to return home and run the franchise. This turned out to be a turning point in Gautam’s life. His decision to import polyvinyl chloride, a key industrial raw material, marked his advent into the global trading market.

Economic liberalisation proved to be a blessing to Gautam. Using the situation created in the markets to his advantage, he established the Adani Group in 1988. During its initial years, the soon-to-be multinational conglomerate focused on agricultural commodities and power. By 1991, the company had grown in both resources and power. Gautam believed that the time was right for the company to diversify its commodities and interests.

Since then, the Adani Group has emerged as a diversified Energy and Logistics conglomerate with key interests in Power Generation and Transmission, Coal Trading and Mining, Gas Distribution, Oil and Gas Exploration as well as Ports and Special Economic Zones. Despite owning this business giant with a flagship of over several billion dollars, Gautam never forgets his humble beginnings. Thus, he makes it a point to give back to society. With the support of his wife, Priti Adani, a dentist and Managing Trustee of Adani Foundation, the Adani Group is tied to a number of philanthropic organisations associated with Education, Community Health, Sustainable Livelihood Development and Rural Infrastructure Development. His vision is to “accomplish passionate commitment to the social obligations towards communities, fostering sustainable and integrated development, thus improving quality of life.”

As he has often said, the key to success lies in constant learning. With this as his mantra, he trots off to acquire yet another billion dollar enterprise.

AIR played an important role in my marriage: Mamta Sehgal

A woman plays diverse roles before and after her marriage and each time with numerous challenges in life. Somewhere between the hustle bustles of the family responsibilities she aims to achieve her goals. Not all manage to do balance it all, but RJ Mamta Sehgal has learnt the art and there is no looking back.

Today Radioandmusic l gets you the story of Mamta Sehgal, a homemaker, a poet and an AIR casual announcer. Mamta does an 11-2 show. She has a very interesting journey to share with us; radio played a very important role here. Excerpts.

How did radio happen to you?
I was doing my MA in Economics from Mumbai University. One day I participated in a poetry circle competition held in the university where Vijay Akela (lyricist) was invited as a guest. I read the poetries written by me and he loved the way I expressed myself while reading and writing poems. He suggested me to not leave my talent at this stage and move ahead with it. He also went on to introduce me to All India Radio.
How did you manage to get into AIR?
When I first went for an interview, I went through different tests and the entire team appreciated my work. It had been a month and I did not get any call from the team. I was wondering whether I was selected or they just appreciated me as a kind gesture. Out of curiosity, I called the office to check up on the results, they told that the results were pending, but they secretly told me that I was selected.
Tell us about your first show on AIR?
In 2004 I joined AIR with a few more people. For the first 10 days, we were trained how to play a radio and the eleventh day we were given our own show. Anurag Pandey, Siddharth Kannan, Dilip Jain, Anirudh – all the renowned RJs now were my seniors back then.
My first show Chithi Aai Hai was about reading letters. The AIR Rainbow fans used to send us letters. While reading those, I used to smartly fit in my poetries in the form of a reply. That was a completely different feeling for me. It was good to know the responses from the station.
Why did you quit AIR in 2005?
In 2005, I got a call from Red FM that they want me as an RJ on their show. They heard me on AIR and loved my style of talking. I did an evening 5-9 show called Happy Hours with Jose and a countdown show on Saturday with a national show which simultaneously aired in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Then I quit Red FM after one and a half year because I got an opportunity to anchor for a news channel, something that I always wanted to do.
What got you back to the place where you started from?
It was in 2007 when I got back to AIR. Before this when I was anchoring for a news channel, it was too much hardship for me, with no fixed schedule. Also, I was attacked twice post work. I used to always leave late from work and that did land me in trouble twice. Also, the schedule was harming my health. Thus I decided to quit anchoring and get back to radio talk. The team was kind enough to take me back on-air and since then (2007) I have not taken any break.
AIR has played an important role in your marriage. Tell us a bit about it.
It was in 2008 when I met my husband on Shaadi.com. During those days I was doing a midnight show called Dil Se from 12-2am. He heard my voice and fell in love even before we actually met.
The day we met for the first time he was filled with nervousness and excitement due to which I couldn’t talk much. The same day while I was on-air, he was listening to my show and asking me questions via SMS as how was his impression on me, if I like him and more. To answer each of those questions I used to reply in the form of a Shayari on-air and he understood them. This is how our story began.
What is the procedure for being a casual announcer at AIR?
To be a casual announcer on AIR, one needs to be a graduate. Everyone can be a casual announcer unless you are not a government employee. One needs to go through various tests and if selected you get a ‘Vani Certificate’- a voice training certificate from AIR as a voice artiste. With this certificate, one can apply in any station on AIR across India in languages like Hindi, English, Gujarati, and Marathi.
What is the process of show designing?
The best part of AIR is you are your own writer, presenter and music producer, it’s like you are your own boss. All we are expected to do is submit our script well in advance for approval. There are times when I do not have stories for my show; this is when I travel in local transport and observe things around. I get a lot of stories this way to share with my listeners.
Are there any limitations when it comes to broadcasting content on AIR?
Yes, being a public broadcaster we go through certain restrictions when it comes to playing music and jockeying. We cannot promote alcohol or smoke in any manner. So, we do not play any songs that include words like smoke or alcohol.
How do you feel being an AIR’s casual announcer?
I feel so good and an active woman at the same time. As I have responsibilities of my home and family too, I have opted for an 11 am- 2 pm show because my daughter comes back by 4 and I don’t want my schedule to be hampered on her.

Obituary : CR Ramaswamy, veteran broadcaster & retired DDG, AIR expires

A Legend is gone, was the refrain of all those I interacted in connection with the sad and unfortunate demise of CR.

CR RAMASWAMY, better and fondly known to his contemporaries as CR passed away on 20th October 2017 at Chennai at the age of 83. He retired as DDG, AIR on 31.5.1992. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter who are settled well in the US. Born on 18.5.1934, CR joined service on 11.8.1958 as a Programme Executive and had an extremely illustrious career in the organization. “He was probably the most scholarly person of AIR during those times’’ reminisced Shri. TK Thomas who took VRS from the organization as Director (FW) way back in 1987.

A family friend of CR, Shri. TK Thomas is filled with fond memories for the departed soul. He recalled that CR had even given a draft of Rs. 3 lakh rupees for his son’s higher education at the US and asked him not to tell his father; it is another matter that the education proposal did not materialize and the amount was returned. ‘’Such was the humane nature of CR’’ recalls Shri. Thomas.

CR served in many places during the course of his career which include Nagpur, Bangalore, Vijayawada, Chennai, New Delhi, Kohima, Tirunelveli, Guwahati, Aizawl among others. Recalls Shri. SS Pandian, Programme Executive (Retd.) who served under him as a casual in ESD, when CR was the Director and subsequently as a Programme Executive – ‘’CR was a person who had no rancor or illwill against anybody’’. CR in the course of his career had served as DDG (PP & D) and DDG (Inspection) too. In the latter capacity CR had to visit many stations to conduct audit of programmes and in this context Shri. Vijaya Thiruvengadam, Former SD of AIR, Chennai fondly remembers how CR reposed faith in individuals and his subordinates. During one such visit to AIR, Thiruvananthapuram, when Shri. Thiruvengadam was the SD, “CR’s visit reflected this sentiment” said he. ‘’CR believed in innovation in Broadcasting; he inspired and motivated young officers and he had no poor opinion about anyone’’ emphasizes Shri. Thiruvengadam.

CR had visited the UK under the Imperial Bursar Scheme for a period of 5 months sometime in the late 60’s. He had a never ending romance with books and his huge collection of books on almost any subject you name, bear testimony to the fact. Shri. Krishnan, Retd. DDG who remained a close friend of CR for over 40 years sounded very emotional when he was informed of the unfortunate demise of CR. “He had an excellent command over both English and Tamil and would have the audience spellbound with his clarity and mastery over the Queen’s language”. “He was a consummate speaker and a prolific writer, very eloquent in his command over English and had even coined attractive slogans for AIR’’ recalls Shri. Gururaj, another contemporary of CR, who retired as Director of National Channel.

CR, a multifaceted personality, after retirement was associated with the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan as its Principal for a few years, had been a member of Asian Broadcasting Union, ABU and has contributed to many journals. Every ABU Conference invariably featured CR’s thought provoking and incisive article. “CR’s forte was Spoken Word, especially Talks English”, remarked Shri. Vijaya Thiruvengadam. Dusting old memories about CR, Shri. Thiruvengadam in a humorous vein recalled how CR used to be at ease with the biting cold of Delhi in just trousers and slacks without any sweater or muffler. ‘’It was only this July that I on my way from Poovathoor, my home town visited CR at his residence in Chennai. I was moved to tears at his state as he was not able to communicate. Though he shall continue to live in my memories, I shall continue to miss him’’ expressed Shri. TK. Thomas with a sigh of grief.

Though a generation apart, and having joined the organization only in 1989, I had not the fortune to interact with him in his official capacity. Though at the personal level, he had ample words of warmth and professional advice, whenever sought for. His professional outlook and felicity with the language which danced to his tunes, that turned me into his abiding admirer. It’s an irreparable loss to all broadcast professionals, for we have grown poorer by a legend and a human being. I join you all in praying to Lord Narayana, (about whom CR was very fond of) and may the benign soul attain His Heavenly Abode.

One thing that's common about geniuses around the globe is how early they announce themselves to the world. Take these two brothers, for example. They haven't even hit their teens but have already started their journey as budding entrepreneurs.

Hailing from Chennai, 12-year-old Shravan and his 10-year-old brother Sanjay Kumaran founded the software firm GoDimensions four years back in 2012, making them the youngest CEOs of India, ever!

Shravan and Sanjay were only in their sixth and eighth grade respectively when they launched their first mobile phone application. In the last four years, the brothers have developed 11 applications with over 70,000 downloads!

The duo was deeply inspired by Steve Jobs, "for innovation and never say die attitude even in tough adversity. It is this story that we like to hear multiple times from our Dad," they said in an interview with nextbigwhat.com. They even hold the distinction of being the youngest Mobile Application Programmers in India by Apple. The two had developed more than 150 test apps before launching their first official app, Catch Me Cop. Their other app, Alphabet Board, even got a 5-star rating on the app store. Now 15 and 14, Shravan and Sanjay Kumaran aim to get at least 50% of the smartphone users in India to use their apps.

Move over National Geographic and Discovery, India to have its own channel dedicated to nature soon

India may have its own version of National Geographic channel from the next year. Doordarshan is planning to launch an exclusive indigenous nature channel DD Prakriti, which will mainly promote nature conservation films in India, next year. The channel will continue through the period of the National Wildlife Action Plan (NWAP) that is effective till 2031, Indian Express reported today. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change this month released the third-NWAP (2017-2031) and also recommended the setting up of this ”exclusive channel”. The channel, DD Prakriti will be launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Doordarshan, for promoting awareness about nature conservation in the country”. It was also recommended that the channel continues through the plan period.

National Wildlife Board member and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) CEO, Vivek Menon said this was a step towards promoting nature films made by Indians. “Instead of only consuming Discovery Channel and National Geographic that largely comes to us from outside India, this is a step towards promoting nature films made by Indians and there is a lot of material already to work with,” Menon said. The NWAP also pointed out that the country is in the “midst of great socio-economic changes, which are bound to have significant impact on the wildlife conservation scenario”. It further said that ”nature literacy” is one such step which will ensure that the impact doesn’t turn negetive. However, Doordarshan’s prior attempts of launching exclusive channels have not reaped the desired outcome. DD Prakriti will be the latest in its string of 24×7 channels dedicated to an issue or region.

Prasar Bharti to go digital, sell India story to world

India's public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is looking to spread its wings overseas, digitally. Along with deciding to phase out analog terrestrial TV transmitters of Doordarshan and move towards a digital network in its board meeting, Prasar Bharati (PB) has moved a proposal to the Union government seeking approval for the launch of 'Digital Prasar Bharati' as "a globally respected digital news platform advocating Indian national interest". The proposal was first made by a special committee headed by PB chairman A Surya Prakash in 2016. After receiving in-principle approval from the PB board, it was submitted to the information and broadcasting ministry earlier this year.

The committee's report suggested that the digital platform be used to report international news with an Indian perspective to a global audience, and also create mindshare for India's strategic interventions. One of the stated missions of Digital Prasar Bharati (DPB) will be to "challenge the anti-India narrative in foreign media through hard and compelling commentary". Speaking to TOI, Surya Prakash said, "My idea is for the digital platform to be operated through a special purpose vehicle in which Prasar Bharati has a stake."

The proposed English language digital platform will focus on global economy, geopolitics, international terror, global crises and soft power. It has also proposed that it should be a platform for news items that show "India speaking and acting", and where DPB can control the discourse on environment, nature, animal rights and human rights "on our own terms". Likely to cost a tenth of what it takes to run a linear television platform, the broadcaster has, in its note to the government, said the DPB must "fight the tendency in elite English news and academic discourses to constantly assume that universal rights discourses are somehow attained only by reducing one's cultural identity and 'nativity'". Emphasising that there must be "political will to show the mirror to others in the name of universal rights discourse and morality", the PB board cited instances of Russia Today, which gives play to negative news from the US, and Al Jazeera English, which shows its western audiences their own problems.
