All India Radio to broadcast them in local languages to encourage people to vote
People of Udupi district will soon listen to jingles on the radio urging them to vote in languages which are most spoken in the region — the Tulu and the Kundapur dialect. While Tulu is the lingua franca in the district, Kundapur Kannada (Kundagannada) is spoken by a large number of people in Brahmavar, Kundapur, and Byndoor taluks of the district.
Radio still popular
Radio is still a popular medium in those rural areas lacking mobile phones or cable television penetration. Some villages are in the interior areas in hilly ranges lacking proper road connectivity. It is to reach these remote areas that the District SVEEP Committee has created four jingles to be broadcast on the radio.
On of the jingles in Tulu is aimed at the youth, which tells them to shun any plans of going on a trip on polling day. The jingle in Kundapur Kannada is about the excitement of a young voter exercising franchise for the first time.
One more exhorts invitees to weddings to first cast their vote on the polling day and then attend the wedding. Polling in Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, and Hebri Assembly segments of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency will be held on April 18, while it will be held in Byndoor Assembly segment of Shivamogga parliamentary constituency in Udupi district on April 23. These jingles will be broadcast by All India Radio at specified timings daily and have been released on social media.
