Making waves: AIR Karaikal’s new transmitter and broadcast plans have resulted in a spike in listeners.
To broadcast special interactive programmes through the day
All India Radio, Karaikal (FM 100.3) is observing its 25th anniversary of public broadcasting on Wednesday with a variety of programmes to be broadcast through the day.
The FM station covers areas spread across Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur districts and certain blocks of Thanjavur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts.
G. Swaminathan, Head of Office and Programmes, said the occasion would be marked by special live interactive programmes from Karaikal, Thiruvarur, Vaariyankaval, Mayiladuthurai, Kodiyakaadu, Kudavasal, Seerkazhi, Chidambaram, Nagapattinam, Kumbakonam, Mannarkudi, Papanasam, Vedaranyam, Nachiyarkoil, Vaitheeswarankoil, Kurungudi, Velankanni, Thiruthuraipoondi, Nannilam, Kadagam, Kallaathoor, Nagore, Nedungadu and Jayankondam. Besides, to oblige with the listeners’ demands several events and activities including cultural competitions, special programmes (indoor and outdoor), felicitations and listeners’ meets have been planned for the coming year.
According to Mr. Swaminathan, with the new 10KW FM transmitter and changes done to the programme plan, listener numbers have increased remarkably. The letters received from listeners in 2018 was 24,268. Over 302 times outdoor programmes with the participation of rural and urban listeners alike.
The channel’s post-Cyclone Gaja coverage was well received, he added.

Some of the popular in-house programmes were Sindhanai Arangam (on life skills), Kisan Vani (agriculture programme), Listeners choice (film songs), Thagaval Neram by Thenkachi Ko Swaminathan and Iniya Ragam (film songs).
