S Sumanaspathi Reddy, Assistant Director of All India Radio-Adilabad station, was selected for the Rythunestham Award-2018 in the category of Agro-journalism. He will receive it from Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu at a programme in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Rythunestham Awards were instituted 14 years ago in memory of eminent agri-scientist Dr. IV Subba Rao. The awards are presented to recognise the contributions of scientists, progressive farmers, extension officers and agriculture journalists in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
Reddy said rural folk form over 90 per cent of listeners for the radio station. “Therefore agriculture programmes have been given the highest prominence in terms of variety, local orientation, depth-of-field recordings, deployment of public service messages concerning agriculture, and utilising other prime-time popular slots to send small, timely and focused messages,” he said.
Apart from a daily 30-minute Kisanvani slot at 7.15 pm, the station airs short capsules of information, suggestions and tips by scientists and field officers in its morning information service. A special effort is made to impress on farmers to avoid excessive and unscientific use of chemical manures and pesticides, he said.
