In connection with Sivarathri (13-02-2018) , Kanyakumari District celebrated this festival in the name of Sivalaya Ottam *, *People across the district and the neighbouring Kerala have started the ‘Sivalaya Ottam’ after worshipping Lord Shiva at Munchirai Thirumalai Mahadevar Temple in Kanyakumari district . There are 12 prominent Lord Shiva temples in different parts of the district including Vilavancode and Kalkulam taluks, within a radius of 125 km. The devotees would run through Thikkurichi, Thirparappu, Thirunanthikkarai, Ponmanai, Panthippakam, Kalkulam, Melancode, Thiruvadaicode, Thiruvithancode, Thirupanthiyode and Thriunattalam to cover the 125 km within 24 hours. The ‘Sivalaya Ottam’ would come to an end at the Sankaranarayanar Temple at Thirunattalam.This is a distinct feature found only in Kanyakumari District. AIR, Nagercoil was broadcast special Live phone out of the above Sivalya Ottam every hour for duration of 15mts from 8AM onwards , till 7PM. on that day.
