D.Pradeep Kumar,Assistant Director(Programme),Manjeri F.M Station in Kerala,has won this year’s Dr B.R Ambedkar media award,for a documentary in audio category,instituted by the State Government for best reports on the life of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.This prestigious award carries a cash prize of Rs 15000 and a citation,to be presented in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday by Minister for SC, SCT and backward class development, A.K.Balan.Written and directed by him,this 30-mts investigative documentary entitled ’’ekastha gurukulangal’’ is about one-teacher alternative schools (ekaadhyakavidyalayangal),where native primary education is given to under- privileged students in remote and marooned villages, especially in tribal hamlets. The programme goes deep into the learning environment in these schools,numbering 300, located in the neighbourhoods, mostly within forests, backward areas or coastal belt in the State. Interviews with students, parents and teachers, who make perilous journey every day to reach these schools, throw light on the functioning of these multi-grade learning centres, hitherto unknown to other sections of society.
