A timely alert by Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped save three Doordarshan cameramen and a photographer from being swept away by the gushing waters of Aji-3 dam. The dam's sluice gates had been opened to make the launch of the Saurashtra - Narmada Avaratarn Irrigation Scheme on Tuesday.
After pressing the button to release water from the dam, Modi was casually looking at the flow when he saw the four standing dangerously close to the cascading waters. The PM frantically gestured at them to get out of harm's way. Fortunately, they saw him signalling to them in the nick of time. Just how close a call it was for the photographers became evident when a camera and tripod at the spot were swept away even as the lensmen scampered to safety. Eyewitnesses said three cameramen from Doordarshan Bhopal and a photographer hired by Rajkot administration were standing in the dam's downstream to shoot the inaugural ceremony. Other photographers and videographers were not allowed in the area.
